Many believe that the Western Australia left-hander is the most exciting Test batsman around today, and he keeps wicket too.
Gilchrist came into Test cricket at quite a late age, making his debut against Pakistan in 1999 with 76 one-day caps already to his name.
His score of 81 in the second innings at Brisbane was an indication of things to come.
In February 2002, Gilchrist hit what was then the fastest double-century in Test cricket, against South Africa.
His 204 off 213 balls was beaten weeks later by New Zealand's Nathan Astle, who plundered 222 runs off 168 runs.
Batting in the lower middle-order Gilchrist still managed to have a good Ashes series against England scoring a ton and two half-centuries.
And with his average of 58.11, but more importantly a strike rate of 82.70 runs per 100 balls, going into this series he is sure to be a major thorn in the West Indies side.
