In any other Test side, stocky pace bowler Bichel would be an automatic selection. But in the star-studded Australian line-up he has been forced to pick up the scraps.
Only when the usual pace trio are injured or lacking form has Bichel stepped up to the Test arena, gaining 11 caps going into this tour.
He was a key figure in retaining the World Cup, stepping into the side in the absence of the injured Jason Gillespie.
And he also proved a vital lower-order bat, rescuing apparently lost causes against England and New Zealand.
Bichel's greatest impact on the Test scene was against the West Indies at Melbourne in 2000/01, when a return of five for 60 was key in gaining a 352-run win.
