Generally acknowledged as the second-best leg-spinner in the world, MacGill's Test ambitions have been blunted by the presence of the best - Shane Warne. MacGill failed to impress on his latest deputation, covering for an injured Warne in the fourth and fifth Ashes Tests, despite a five-wicket haul in Melbourne.
His rival's 12-month ban has left MacGill, at 32, with a chance to finally strut his stuff on the Test stage.
But he may have to fend off surprise challenger Brad Hogg for a spot.
MacGill has an admirable record against West Indies, with 28 wickets in eight Tests, including figures of seven for 104 in Sydney.
And it was in the Caribbean four years ago that MacGill was selected ahead of Warne for the only time in his career.
His five wickets in the fourth Test helped to secure a tied series.
