Vikram Solanki was identified as an elegant, attacking batsman by England in 2000, and was picked for the limited-overs series in South Africa.
But he endured a torrid time, unable to resist flashing his bat at the wrong ball and looking out of his depth.
He was recalled to the one-day side in 2003, hitting a mature unbeaten 40 against Pakistan.
He followed this with a swashbuckling 106 against South Africa and a composed half century in the NatWest series final against the same team at Lord's.
But he struggled in county cricket in the second half of the summer and even contrived to look out of his depth in the three ODIs against Bangladesh.
