Anthony McGrath was tipped as a future England star when he was selected for the A team tour to Pakistan in 1996.
But he had to wait seven years to become the surprise choice to take the place of the injured Andrew Flintoff for the Test series against Zimbabwe.
He did not disappoint with scores of 68 and 82, and was steady, if unspectacular, in the limited-overs matches against Pakistan and the NatWest Series, during which he hit a half century against South Africa.
But he was swiftly jettisoned from the Test squad following England's disastrous start against South Africa and Flintoff's return.
England's selectors, however, have shown that they have not lost faith in his potential as a one-day player by picking him to for Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
