Clarke's magnificent start to his cricketing career has included a century on his first-class debut for Surrey in May 2002 and a wicket with his first ball in international cricket.

He had a difficult Test debut in Dhaka, however, before scoring a crucial half-century under pressure in Chittagong.

Clarke impressed during his first lengthy spell in England colours - the home one-day series against Pakistan, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

He combined dogged batting with an ability to lift the run rate when required, and provided some spectacular moments in the field thanks to his speed and accuracy.

But he has not yet achieved the bowling consistency to make him a threat at the highest level.
