One of the most consistent bowlers on the county scene in recent years, James Kirtley was eventually rewarded with a Test debut against South Africa in 2003, and won the match with figures of 6-34.
He played in the next match, but missed out on the last of the series and the winter Test squad because of shin splints.
He has featured in England's one-day side for two years without being able to cement a place or make it to the World Cup.
He made his one-day debut in Zimbabwe in 2001, but had to undergo remedial work after being reported for having a suspect bowling action during that series.
A skiddy, swing bowler, Kirtley's hard-work ethic has been rewarded with a recall to the one-day squad - but is that where his future lies?
