right-arm fast; left-hand batsman

FACTFILE
DOB: 30.07.82
Team: Lancashire
Test debut: v Zimbabwe, Lord's 2003
ODI debut:v Australia, Melbourne 2002

Jimmy Anderson burst onto the international scene as a raw 20-year-old after being drafted into the England team from their Academy for the one-day series in Australia last winter.

His heroics earned him a place in the World Cup squad where his wickets and lively swing bowling further enhanced his reputation.

Anderson announced his entrance to Test cricket with a five-wicket haul on his debut against Zimbabwe at Lord's in 2003, which he capped by becoming the first Englishman to take a limited-overs hat-trick later in the summer.

He was brought back down to Earth in a tough Test series against a powerful South Africa batting line-up, but he remains a big part of England's plans.

He withdrew from the Test squad to tour Bangladesh to rest a sore knee, but returned for the one-day series and is fit for the full tour of Sri Lanka.
