Simon Mayo|09:33 UK time, Thursday, 8 November 2012

And good day to you. Thursday already. Week disappearing. Everyone seems to have enjoyed Squeeze last night and I just loved hearing Labelled With Love. There is something about those songs Glen and Chris wrote in the 70s and 80s particularly that resonate still. It would be absolutely fantastic if their new tunes withstood comparison. Singers and writers tend to have their golden period when they have the Midas touch (too much gold in that analogy) and then spend the rest of their years reliving past glories. So we look forward to the new Squeeze album and the tour with that great idea of selling the gig CD's at the back. A new economic model is emerging...

A post show trip to see the mighty Bellowhead in Camden at the Roundhouse where we had the Electric Proms a while back. They didn't exactly rock but rather jigged and reeled. The mosh pit (everyone standing up basically) heaved with pogoing morris dancers and sweaty shanty singers. They really need to be seen live to be enjoyed in all their 11 piece glory. Not all the songs are easy and they started with some of the more challenging tunes but it only takes a handful of songs about debauchery before we were all succumbed in the end.

Nige cooks tonight (pudding I think) and songs please the NEW ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY. Who appears to be the Bishop of Durham Justin Welby . Your ABofC oldies please.

Have a well-balanced and enlightened Thursday, see you after 5

I missed last night's episode, but will try to listen again on the iThingy. Cool for Cats was the 3rd album I bought (Parallel Lines/Blondie and Eagles' Greatest Hits were the others, since you're asking). It had its own slot in the MFI storage unit for my brand new Panasonic stereogram. Those were the days.

Morning Greetings Ter Mayo Man & ALL...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

RE Yesterdee's Blog/ ALL Comments on cycling - A agree there's also a lot of bad cyclists out there who give a bad image for good cyclists.

There's good and bad from all walks of life.

MOST car drivers are considerate and safe it's just the one idiot that stands out like the taxi driver who ran me off the road on purpose!!!!!

Maybe he was on drugs or something - You never know what yer gonna meet out there!!!!!

Unfortunately it only takes that one idiot to cause an accident!!!!!!

I've seen cyclists running lights but i've seen cars AND lorries too!!!!!

In fact I've seen it all as a trucker.... Seen a car fly onto it's roof once... A school child get hit by a car.... A lorry tip over.... A cyclist crash.... Seen enough if i'd had a camera with me to make a couple of tv programmes!!!!!

As for cyclists.... Being a cyclist, a car driver and a trucker I have experience from all angles... I've seen cyclists come up the inside of my 44 tonne lorry... It's lucky I have seen them as in a truck yer have many blind spots.... But you just can't believe the stupidity.... We've all heard of cyclist being crushed under a lorry that's turning left accident and this is exaclty how it happens.

When i'm out cycling apart from wearing hi-viz clothing, having 2 rear lights and a front light I use simple common sense!!!!!! And follow the simple Highway Code!!!!

I try to help cars overtake me, never come up the inside of lorries and wait at red lights!!!!!!

And I give pedestrians respect and slow for them if on a cycle/ pedestrain path!!!!

Mostly that's going to and from work!!!!!!!

But thankfully I do most of my cycling on the wonderful Wirral where I've lived all my life.

The promenade is perfect for cycling.... most of it is a pedestrian/ cycle path away from the road!!!!!!

And the part that is on the road near Meols and Hoylake is a quieter back road that runs along the seafront!!!!!!

The ride I do I finish just before New Brighton - a round trip of nearly 13miles!!!!!

But we also have an extra section that goes round New Brighton then along the Mersey to Seacombe Ferry.... So maybe 18miles of mostly traffic free cycling!!!!!!!

And we have the old disused railway turned into the Wirral Way.

A beautiful foot/ cycle path from West Kirby along the beautiful River Dee with views over to Wales that finishes in Hooton... 11 miles long!!!!!

This is where I really enjoy my cycling and it's alot safer away from bad tempered or stupid motorists!!!!!!!!

I know I need to up my training.... I'm happy to just keep going up and down the same section of promenade - So VERY lucky to live in this area!!!!!

As for Wiggo just glad he is ok and will get better fast!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 34.

An oil executive who put a tiger in your tank?

TIGER FEET - MUD of course.

Right, enough rubbish from me........I'm off out to the field with all my fresh faced newbees.

    Catch you later. X

  • Comment number 35.

    Blimey, this takes me back...

'Main Man' by T.Rex from the album The Slider...

includes in the lyrics, 'are you my main man' and 'are you a god man', so on that basis, it seems apt. You can draw a veil over lines like 'got giraffes in my hair'. Mind you, for all I know...

  • Comment number 36.

THEME FROM LOCAL HERO - MARK KNOPFLER

THE WAY IT ALWAYS STARTS - MARK KNOPFLER & GERRY RAFFERTY

  • Comment number 39.

    Hi all,

LIVING ON A PRAYER by Bon Jovi gets my vote too,

No time to hang around, fire drill imminent, Squeeze were mesmerising last night, with Labelled with love I was transported back to 1981 and all the life/world/experiences that lay ahead of me - most of which I'm happy to say I have managed and am still standing.

Not done yet though, bring it on.

    Laters peeps,

oh and re the cycling theme, I'm happy to nuke the cyclists who dash across thru Red lights - a common theme here in Oxford - we usually lose about one a year.

My favourite retort as I politely wait at the lights for the GREEN for GO light is 'Red means stop on this planet buddy'!!

I also like to ring my bell loudly at the tourists who think all our city centre roads are pedestrianised... 'Ding a Ling' but that's just me.

  • Comment number 40.

For an ex industry man - its got to be "Beds Are Burning" by Midnight Oil !

#41 John - me 3 on Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah - it is one of my favourite songs but also the one most likely to make me cry.

    Also agree about Leonard Cohen.

No prizes for guessing what I'm listening to at the moment! The version on the Live At Sin-é album.

  • Comment number 48.

    I can only think of

ONE OF US - Joan Osborne (What if God was one of us etc)

    and

CHURCH OF YOUR HEART - Roxette

I don't think Church of the Poisoned Mind works that well....

  • Comment number 49.

#47 amelia - well, I wasn't going to admit that, but I did have to put the Rufus Wainwright version on pause, as I seemed to get a speck of dust or something in my eye...

#48 Jeffrey - I was going to suggest that Culture Club song too, but also decided it was just too wrong!

TRUE FAITH - New Order, would seem to fit nicely though.

  • Comment number 50.

#46 Arthur, it was no comment on your selections BTW! I thought I was being salacious by even mentioning it and then I read back to see you'd actually suggested it!

"So your Holiness, the listeners have chosen 'Church of the Poisoned Mind' as sung by the most extrovertly gay man of our time - I see you are against gay marriage - Enjoy!"

    Such fun.

WHO ARE YOU? - THE WHO

Listened to the 'Squeeze' section of last night's show again. So good.

  • Comment number 53.

#49 John - you have to watch out for these pesky specks of dust

#50 Jeffrey - I like the idea of choosing songs that will never get played! Although most of my choices fall into that basket anyway.

#52. Hmm. Not very helpful really. New motto for Hoffs: If I can't blog a sensible suggestion (apart from positive comments about Squeeze) then I shouldn't blog at all.

    Have good afternoons all x

  • Comment number 58.

.....Apart from I BELIEVE IN JESUS - DONNA SUMMER.

  • Comment number 59.

#56. Sorry; it was the Mayor of London, not he Chancellor. Oops!

  • Comment number 60.

There seem to be lots of new bloggers today - welcome - the more the merrier!

It has been a busy day so far - nothing very exciting but time-filling. Just sat down for some lunch and to catch up with the blog.

I like 'Hallelujah' by Jeff Buckley but I hope it's not chosen as it was played at the funeral of my stepson (The Mr's son) and it can make him quite morose (understandably) and I don't like seeing him like that when there is nothing I can do to help.

    Goodness, getting very deep today....

#52, I had never heard of him either.

In May, The Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr Rowan Williams led the service at our little village (not far from Canterbury) - tiny CofE in that he had a Sunday free and he is friends with the new woman vicar. I thought his service was excellent, I could listen to his BBCish fluid baritone voice all morning and he dressed down, wearing a plain, nondescript miter (if there is such a thing) and robe. I'm sorry to see him leave, for me, the lone voice of common man reason amongst the Royals and Westminster Eton Toffs. Btw, I'm now hopping off my soapbox.

Hello to all new bloggers and those who visit occasionally - lovely to see you - do stay and chat.

Hoffs - what on earth was wrong with your Who suggestion? I thought it was good and sensible - he is the surprise choice (could I think of a song that would fit being a surprise choice - no I couldn't) and relatively unknown.

Gazza - you have gone all capitals for a change - almost didn't recognise you there!

  • Comment number 66.

    PERSONAL JESUS by Depeche Mode

is a good song but unlikely to get a hearing....bit late to the melee.

Enjoy the show all, off for a pizza and a Big Band gig - well, it is 'Friday night'

What a fabulous day, albeit I've been indoors decorating the smallest room in the house!

So, to make amends, I've just been on a bike ride (yes in the dark) down to the seafront. It was so peaceful, waves just lapping in, fishing boats bobbing up and down and not a soul in sight!

    Bliss :)

That sounds wonderful Sal! I'm jealous..........

Well done to the menshees tonight.

11th COMMANDMENT ~ THOU SHALT NOT COVERT THY NEIGHBOURS PIZZA

Do enjoy Sal, the last one I tried to eat was sabotaged by my mogpoppet. (grrrr)

Just home now from my first rehersal for the local 'am dram' panto. For much of the time I felt 'why am I here?, I could be at home snuggled up on the sofa'. I suspect I will enjoy it more when we start with the singing, as this seems to be the thing ive been drafted in for (you have a good voice, our chorus is lacking, please come join us).

Guess I should turn in then.

Just back from seeing the wonderful Christy Moore and having a cup of tea and a Tunnocks Tea Cake.

Well done to blopoppets' tunes I heard earlier... Billie, Scotch Git and Zoe, and thanks for my Durham Town. I enjoyed the showstopper but didn't realise until I saw Scotch Git's list that it was Scotch Git's choice!

Sal, your bike ride sounded peaceful... and now and again I walk the dogs along the beach in the dark, mostly when the moon is bright and reflects on the water, but like you, I enjoy the sound of waves lapping at the edge of the beach.

I'm not sure about your pizza but what is the difference in the taste or texture?....

    hi all

ive been to durham loads of times been in the cathederal and the castle and been to greggs before thay branched out to the whole of the uk,the cathederal has got 2 door knockers in the shape of lions heads.ive also been to canterbury cathederal i went on a school trip to kent in 1984 i remember that week well because watford were in the fa cup final and we were watching it at the motel we were staying 4 the week,i met the archbiship of canterbury when we were there he came and said hello to us,it was the teacher who said it was the archbishop i didnt know who he was but saw him on tv and reconized him it was robert runcie.

  • Comment number 85.

Well done Florence for Roger Whittaker - long time since I've heard that. Only problem (with the song, not the choice of it) is that it goes on about the Tyne which is guaranteed to upset all those from Durham which is on the Wear. i suppose that has to go down as poetic licence !

Congrats to all the others who got a name call last night.

Just realised that no one suggested the Pink Panther theme - because as everyone knows, he comes from....

    Durham, durham, durham, durham, durham...

Good morning all - bit grey so far, but the birds are all up and about, squabbling over the feeders.

Can I ask why CE has guests on his show and proceeds to try and get them to give him the answers he has just discovered the previous day by reading his/her book and keeps doing a Jeremy Paxman by saying "Come on!" Not exactly Parkie is he?!

  • Comment number 87.

Thanks for the mention again - usually switch to Classic FM on the Friday drive home. Need some purging as am forced to listen to Radio 1 at work. Nick Grimshaw is quite funny, Fern is ok, but by the time Scott Mills comes on, I've usually lost the will to live. Am far too old to get his innuendo bingo. need to ask Ffather Christmas for a new phone with FM Radio. (Cant get DAB at work).

    Have a good weekend everyone.

  • Comment number 88.

PCM - how dreadful, the inane chat must drive you mad. I suppose the only small saving grace is that it isn't commercial radio with unbearable ads!

Can't you just use a small portable radio with a headphone socket rather than a phone? I never had very good experiences trying to get FM radio on phones in the past but they may have improved.

  • Comment number 89.

#87 - I have a N***A phone which has FM radio and very little else - no camera, touchscreens, internet etc and it is really cheap and works very well - does all I want anyway!

    Good morning ladies

Grey and dull here in Surrey but no rain ... yet!

    Morning all

Busy busy week, so no blogging for me so far!

Hopefully it will appear soon but as Jilly says it is for an ARFO from 1978.
