Hanging around

Simon Mayo|09:41 UK time, Tuesday, 4 December 2012

First apologies for the late posting yesterday. It was in the system but never quite made it to you. Words have been spoken, meetings have been called. Hopefully this won't happen again! And thanks for all the birthday greetings to child 3, he celebrated with the traditional bowls of fizzy fish and then opening a Facebook account. This has been the thing he has been looking forward to more than anything-a modern rite of passage. The evening rang to cries of who had just accepted his friendship requests. I shall point him in the direction of the SMDT page ASAP. I've realised I have no idea whether their is age requirement to join the blog but I shall tell him its 21 anyway.

Suit wearing today as I'm off the to the National Book Awards tonight. Itch has been nominated for best children's book where it will probably lose to David Walliams but even being nominated seems like winning to be honest. So we go with the expectation of a few canapés, the odd glass of prosecco and a cheery evening anyway; no one, especially me, expected to be doing this kind of thing anyway! I shall report, bleary-eyed from a train tomorrow morning.

Today we welcome Boris Johnson to Drivetime. The Mayor of London is, by any reckoning, a unique figure in the UK and whether you like his politics or don't, he is rarely short of compelling. He's had a good year too all in all and he's written a book on London which begins with his account of the Olympic experience. It is fascinating stuff I think and you cab Mayor Boris after 6. I thought we'd do Boris oldies but no! After the baby news of yesterday we should try songs of EXPECTATION. One of the papers has 'Kate Expectations' as the headline today so that seems about right really. Waiting, hoping, expecting- that kind of thing.

Have an uplifting and flattering Tuesday, see you after 5.

Well, it was worth waiting for. Good news on the FB account. He will have more folowers than the Drivetime page by the end of today, I'll bet. I never knew how many 'friends' my son had until his 13th birthday last year.......

Good luck at the book awards tonight Simon. For what its worth, Itch scores much higher in this household than Gangsta Granny or Billionaire Boy.

    My suggestion would be:

SITTING, WAITING, WISHING - JACK JOHNSON

    or

    PATIENCE - TAKE THAT

As for me, I'll be doing a lot of the former today and hopefully will have a lot of the latter. Hoping the AA arrive soon..........

    Looking forward to hearing Boris.

Fingers crossed Simon - what a thrill :) Have a few glasses of the fizzy stuff and enjoy.

I feel v sorry for Kate & Wills - it was never going to be a private affair but at less than 12 weeks I guess they'd hoped to keep it quiet for a few more weeks. It must be very unpleasant for them both.

Morning your Lordship, team, NYM and suited-and-booted bloggers,

Well done on holding out to 13 to let young Mr Mayo join FB - we made it to 12, and then caved in. And then there's the whole etiquette about whether you can be their friend or not? We decided not - but still have password access to conduct the occasional audit, and, more constructively, to give coaching on online etiquette from a parent's perspective.

Anyway, on to more serious matters....

  • Comment number 21.

#8 Advent_Gale, I also feel really sorry for Kate and William having to announce their pregnancy to the world so early. Seemingly the Queen was only told yesterday as well and it would have been so nice if they could have all enjoyed it privately within the family for a few weeks and for them to smile at the public trying to guess 'is she, isn't she pregnant'.

My daughter and her husband are expecting twins in the spring, but they told nobody until a scan at about 11 or 12 weeks and pregnancy up until that time, can be a bit worrying and I feel really sorry for Kate and William, especially if the press have published page after page about it.

I think you will win with ITCH so sending positive vibes back at ya Simon!

Amelia, go for it, once you start Kickboxing its extremely addictive, I have been doing it since August 2000!

Advent Gale, I agree with you, the media should stop talking about this news, we all know now and one should let them me at this trying time so early in the pregnancy. Local Radio and a certain Commercial Breakfast TV programme are the worst offenders, relentless is the word!

    Now choons:

    Hello all,

Finally made it before midday to the blog, pesky work.

How exciting - the Book Awards!! Can't help but remember Bridgit Jones's catastrophic evening MC'ing at a book launch...maybe you had to be there but she said of the book being launched 'the finest book ever written' then sees Salman Rushdie and says 'of course Mr Rushdie's are good, too - as are yours, Mr Archer' (Jeffrey)

Have twittered some ideas (sorry if they're oop there with yours, bloggers!)

    HANGING AROUND by the Stranglers

RIGHT HERE WAITING FOR YOU by Richard Marx

YOUR TIME IS GONNA COME by the mighty Zep

WAITING GAME by Van the Grumpy Old Man

    and have just thought of

WAITING FOR THE DAY by Jerry of the Rafferty

Sadly I whilst I have sympathy for Kate in her predicament, apparently 1 in 50 women have this condition (I did) and the many many others will still be going to work (throwing up in the loo as I did), wiping bottoms of their other offsprings (then throwing up) (I did) and still having to make dinner, and take kids to school..

  • Comment number 37.

Sal, it is quite exciting, especially as they have also decided that they don't want to know the sex of their babies until they arrive, unlike my son and daughter-in-law who had a baby in August and told everyone as soon as they knew and DIL was spending any extra money they had on far too many baby outfits, gorgeous dresses and outfits that will never ever be worn, also I told my son that she was silly because she didn't know how big the baby would be.

Not being disrespectful, but my daughter has more sense than that and will buy a few 'neutral' babygrows, sleep suits etc until babies arrive and hopefully if one is a girl, she might be lucky in getting some hand-me-downs that won't ever have been worn! The twins (all being well) are growing in separate sacs with their own placentas so at the last scan last week, are each the size of a baby of a single pregnancy, so she's looking pretty big!

  • Comment number 38.

    Hi Simon & Best Bloggers,

Hello again, back in one piece after my slippy slidey (slidy?) dog walk and late to the blog as a consequence. Sorry if I'm duplicating, these are all I can come up with at the moment:

A QUESTION OF TIME - Depeche Mode

WHAT DO I GET? - Buzzcocks

    A PROMISE - Echo & the Bunnymen

(KEEP FEELING) FASCINATION - Human League

Tea and toast time me thinks.

  • Comment number 40.

Time for a coffee - feeling a bit better now.

I'm trying out a new name, with thanks to Molly for the suggestion. What do bloggers think?

On the subject of offspring on Facebook, my daughter went through a phase of not wanting Mr B and I to be 'friends' when she was around 15 or 16. Which was slightly worrying at the time, but she's a sensible girl so we took the view that sometimes it's better not to know. Now we're 'friends' again (you'll be pleased to know!) - although I think she sometimes forgets that her parents can see what she posts about her various antics at Uni...

    ~X~

  • Comment number 41.

OK, here goes for expecting songs (mind you the fuss being made is you'd think this was something new - people have been making babies for years and years - so enough already!!!!!!!)

Great Expectations - New Model Army (bit too radical for R2)

    Babies - Pulp

Sweet Child o Mine - Guns N Roses (Dr Mosh will approve)

No doubt will think of somemore later

  • Comment number 42.

    Morning all

My humble suggestion is the rather magnificent:

WAITING ON A SLOW TRAIN - Matraca Berg

Or if that's too new, how about:

It'll blow yer mind and more importantly of yer sons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's really is the most amazing air show ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even if yer not at all inter planes we all love ter watch the Red Arrows..... everybody come sout of their 'ouses ter watch if there's a disply going on above their town.... But imagine..... IMAGINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Being at the place were they are based for the day.... Meeting the pilots.... watching them do their pre-display checks.... Then taxi off.... Line up..... And off they go together to do an amzing display!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And that's just the Red Arrows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sparkly Suzieeee, that CiN bug was a nasty one. Not many things confine me to bed, but I was under the duvet for a couple of days with it and didn't feel right for days afterwards. Hope the laryngitis disappears soon.

Glad that Simon didn't go for the 'Boris' oldies theme. Am sure I'd be completely stumped!!

As a grandparent, your help with them will be very welcome I'm sure.

The first few months are exhausting (not to mention the subsequent 18 years!!)

#73 Suzie with lots of eeeeeeees, my daughter has not experienced feeling sick at all and neither did I with a son and a daughter, yet some people say that a boy makes people feel the sickness, others say a girl does it and now some say it's twins that cause morning sickness and could Kate be expecting twins, but I think some have it and some don't, irrespective of what sex a pregnancy is.

My sister-in-law had two boys and was sick almost every day for the first 3 months in both pregnancies, and she found out from her mum (my MIL) that she too was sick with all of her four children, so I wonder if it is hereditary, rather than connected to the sex that's being carried.

  • Comment number 80.

#78 You might be right about it being hereditary, my Mum suffered badly (2 girls) and I count my blessings that she didn't go to the Dr's and get prescribed Thalidomide.

I was worst with my son, rather than either of my 2 daughters....blamed it on the testosterone element! although before I announced my pregnancy with daughter #2 I came down with campylobacter (food poisoning) so was very poorly for a good month but couldn't tell people why it was soo worrying.

I'm just watching the news on TV and I can't believe the HUNDREDS of photographers that are filling the pavements outside of the hospital where the Duchess of Cambridge is and presumably some have been there all night... if there are so many hanging around while she is in hospital suffering with morning sickness, what will it be like when she actually gives birth? Poor girl!

Hi Scotty, welcome to the blog!

Thanks for the endorsements re my name change. Molly, I liked 'Jess Nuts Roasting' too, but for some reason I thought it sounded a bit rude...

    ;o)

And I must also congratulate Flo soon-to-be Granny-again. Twins - how exciting! It's great to hear some baby news...

What, you mean there is other baby news...?

    ;o)

    Hello and welcome, Scotty!

How lovely to see you and look forward to more contributions.

  • Comment number 87.

I was wondering last night, while I was stuck in traffic listening to the radio, about the new nomenclature (good word!) up there ^^:

Why is it "Take part in the show" and not "Take part in the episode"?

Welcome Scotty - hope this is the first participation of many.

And also from yesterday - hello to Ian - well done on getting your book review read out! Hope you come back and post again.

Gary - I like the odd bit of Pearl Jam too.

Flo - life so in the public would be unbearable. The headline on the BBC site is - William visits Kate - what can I say?

Lunch = lentil soup (as it is at least 3 days a week on average) and the last of the corn bread, I must get a receipt, it was lovely.

I’ve been meaning to make sour dough bread for years and now I am home for a bit I really should have a go making a starter. Anyone here bake and can offer advice?

  • Comment number 91.

Thanks everyone for the granny-to-be of twins greetings... :o) Twins are already in my family but it would be extra nice baby news if Kate and William were expecting twins as I can't remember ever hearing about any Royal twins, but perhaps there are twins on her side.

Suzie - I inevitably thought the same about Scotty's name - something I frequently intone to myself when life is annoying me.

JBJ - episode is wrong - it looks wrong ^^^ and it sounds wrong when Simon says it.

Back again, quick break to put the kettle on.

Hi Scotty! Nice to see you.

Just had a look at the met office forecast for these parts because I thought it was warming up a bit and the sky's looking very grey so I was dreading more rain and back to sloppy, rather than frozen, mud on the dog walk. Got a bit of a shock when I found that we have a weather warning for today, tomorrow + Thursday for snow! And another warning for tonight for ice. Mind you, all the warnings are yellow so probably won't happen and the forecast, by that very same met office, only has a coupkle of light snow showers for us between now and Thursday - how does that happen? How can the same forecasters put us on blanket weather warnings and forecast something different at the same time?

I'm wasting time now, can you tell?

    Better go.......

#91 Twins in my family, too, Flo. They thought I was carrying twins when I was expecting my daughter as the baby bump grew so quickly!

Can you imagine the press furore if Kate is having twins? Poor girl, when you are feeling that poorly the last thing you need is someone waiting to point a camera at you.

  • Comment number 95.

#94 and twins, Mollys got the sprouts on (reminds me of Sarah Kennedy when she was on early mornings as she used to talk about putting her sprouts on about August I think, which is when I make my Christmas cake), anyway, my neighbour who is quite a few years older than me, has identical twin girls (in their mid 30s) and she didn't know she was expecting two until they were born, one arrived shortly followed by the other (normal delivery not a c-section) and she said although both were less than 5lbs each, nobody had a clue there was more than one baby and no other twins in the family and it was before scans started to happen.

  • Comment number 96.

Whatever next? Emma Bridgewater has already got mugs on sale for a Royal baby!!!

Isn't that a wee bit premature?

    Afternoon All

I'm home unexpectedly this afternoon. We're having a glass of wine to toast the life of our Beloved PepperCat who has been put to sleep at lunch time. He had another seizure last night - went to the vet - got worse during the night and during this morning.

We're laughing - remembering all his antics over his nearly 14 years. We're thanking him for choosing us to live with us - which he did! Bechod!

A friend of mine is a twin, and she has three older siblings, two of which (a brother and a sister) are also twins. My pal and her sister are the youngest, and when they were born the older twins were only 5 (there's a single sister in the middle). So her poor mother had five children under 6 to look after, and this was in the 60s. Plus her dad was in the RAF so often away from home!

    Good Afternoon All;

I feel for Kate, and for your daughter, Festive Flo, I had dreadful nausea for a lot longer than the first 12 weeks, when I was expecting my twins. In fact I had an awful pregnancy all in all, and only made it to 30 weeks before going into premature labour. I was carrying the equivalent of a full term baby by then, but I lost so much weight from the sickness, that I didn't look too massive.

I did have cravings for spicy food, like chilli and curry later on, and I became a meat eater again after years of being a vegetarian. I suffered sickness almost from day 1 though. I couldn't bear the smell of frying food, that had me rushing straight to the loo, and I completely went off chocolate! It tasted weird, and I couldn't eat it or smell it without feeling sick... I've been making up for it eversince! ;D

Anyway, wishing all the best for William and Kate, twins or not! And all the best to Festive Flo's daughter.

Get well soon to poorly bloggers, I still haven't got completely over the lurgy I had a couple of weeks ago, it's a nasty bug, that's for sure.

It's my nan's 99th birthday on Saturday, and I've bought her some toffee! An odd present for someone with false teeth, you may think, but it's her favourite. She's been quite ill recently, so we're all hoping she'll perk up in time for her birthday.

I'm listening to Steve Wright, whilst I make a vegetable stew, and not feeling the urge to do violence to my radio... There's time yet though!
