Is it Friday again already? Must apologise for not being around this week, I have been REALLY busy trying to arrange a swim my 8 year old son's doing to raise money for his cub group's roof after Christmas and, so far, it's not going particularly well, seems it's too small a deal for sports men/women/manufacturers/retailers/celebs to be associated with - need thinking cap and expertise of someone who knows. It's a bit more challenging than a normal sponsored swim but I won't go into details - boring for those not involved, as I'm finding out!



I won't suggest an ARFO this week, don't feel I should after winning the crown last week and then slacking in my duties until now! I'll wish everyone else the best of luck and go and polish it ready for the next queen/king.

Having a RUBBISH morning.

Tend to have at least one 'near miss' at the school crossing each week, they varey from people slowly driving through to vans slamming their breaks on at the last minute and on one occasion loosing the load of wood on his roofrack which then nearly hit me. Todays was probably the worse weve had to date though.



3 cars had stopped in each direction while a group of about 15 parents and children were crossing, when around the outside of the cars a 'off road' bike came flying up the road swerving round me. Not only was I nearly run over, several of the children at the crossing had to jummp out of the way too :-( Grrrrrrrrr



Neither the rider or pillian pasenger were wearing helmets, the bike had no lights or registration. Im really p'eeeed off !

All reported to the police of course. with any luck they might be picked up.

Sorry for rant. Had to vent.

You have MICE in your house Deebee??



There are some really good humane mice catchers available. They work really well, just a little smear of peanut butter on the inside, in they go and you tip them out into the garden or maybe further away for peace of mind.



Please, not the guillotine method :O

Gill, I dont suppose you are allowed to use your lollipop for other purposes?

Re mice. Put a wellington boot down. They like to to hide in these as it's a cosy dark space. The little visitor(s) can then be carried far, far away to be released.

I meant to wish all the Scots amongst us - HAPPY ST ANDREWS DAY - do you do anything special to celebrate?



Gill - glad you and the children are ok - we had a scourge of those bikes around here for a while until our local policeman sorted them out (Yes we did have a local policeman - sadly, no longer).



I did my O'Levels in 1972 and went on holiday to Tintagel in Cornwall, where the results were sent - not brilliant; I was a late developer!



When I was teaching, I used 'Popcorn' for the littlies movement 'lessons' - they loved it!

A few years back, we saw a few mice on our patio and Mr thought they were a bit too close to the house, so we bought some humane traps and caught quite a few of the little devils and released them in our local woods.



That was until the local foxes discovered them and stole them, presumably with a mouse inside - PACKED LUNCH! And at around £5 a time, it got too expensive, so the mice still live around the patio and haven't ventured inside yet (fingers crossed!)

I used to have a very deep bucket, one that they used at a local cake making factory and had previously contained apple and blackcurrant mix for pies.



I put some tasty morsels in it and they accessed it by means of 'walking the plank!'



Once inside, there was no means of escape, no matter how high they jumped - and they can! I then used to take them down to the woods to and leave them for nature to decide their fate!

Morning!! Cold - Brrr! That's the way I like it (uh-huh, uh-huh). Have been listening to little people read this morning - always a pleasure.



Haven't read back yet, apart from Simon's blog - got a bit tangled in the naked toffee wrapper bit but I think I know where I am now. Leaves? Hmm. Left my garden recycling bin out this morning and was leaving for school just as the truck came to empty it. I was told not to be too disappointed by the fact that they wouldn't be able to take all the contents away because its such a cold day and the bins would be frozen. Aah, poor bins. So, my bin is still 3/4 full of leaves and I have to steel myself to do what's come down off the trees since I last filled the bin and magic them into the small space that's left. Much prefer raking them up when the ground is frozen - makes anything left amongst them by foxes / badgers easier to pick up, if you get my drift. Annoyingly, our trampoline is completely leaf-free inside but they are banked up all around on the ground. Guess what I'm doing this weekend?!



1972? Although I was little, some of my favourite songs come from that year because when I was older, I could play my parents' 45's on the record player, stacking them up, pretending I was a DJ. Four particular suggestions - I can't choose between them:

#48 Ooh yes! The Strawbs. I used to go to youth-club with them, and went youth-hosteling to Scotland with a group that included at least some of them - before they rose to real fame. My Mum knew the parents of one of them having been to school with said parents. I bought one of their cds recently - all my old vinyls of them have long since gone.

Leaves - we spent a happy morning last weekend raking up every last leaf from the biggest copper beech tree I have ever seen. It's a twice-yearly job as the spring sees the ground covered with the little leaf bud covers (there must be a technical word for such botanical parts). We waited until the tree was devoid of all leaves. The plane trees aren't as far advanced though so no doubt we shall have another few sackfuls of leaves - this cold snap should promote leaf-drop.



Friday's three worder: Data entry boredom. Or: New kitchen nightmare.

#56 - JBG - LOL! I think the 6 yr old listeners would be so giggly at the title of the song that there would be no further need for explanation.



Just a quick walk today - was thinking though, how is it that dogs know exactly where to look for a ball that has been thrown for them? I throw a ball-on-a-rope for my dog, he doesn't seem to watch me do it but runs off in the right direction, even though it is often high above him so he can't see it. I tried to trick him just now by pretending to throw it in one direction, in which he ran, but then flung it the other way and he knew, without looking that I had done so. It is just super-sensitive hearing? Not sure that it is, in his case as whenever I say 'no' he never seems to hear.... Any suggestions?

#54 Mildr... I love The Strawbs and here's you having been to youth club with some of them! I saw them last November and they played the whole of their Hero and Heroine album plus my favourite 'Lay Down' at the end of the show. Dave Cousins is as mad as a box of frogs, but enjoys himself and they're sounding as good as ever.

Hoffs, I wonder if they can smell where the ball is that you've thrown because dogs have a really good sense of smell and ours particularly have as they're Basset Hounds and often run along the ground following scents without looking up from the ground and they can smell a scent beneath snow, which I don't understand as I would have thought the coldness would kill the scent, but it obviously doesn't. I think male dogs can smell a bitch in season from quite a long way.

By the way, JBG, I thought it was you who had starred in the Army confession earlier this week - got v excited and nearly blogged congrats until I realised that Simon had said 'GBJ'.

#36 Gill - that's shocking, I hope the police get them. I've had problems with those sort of bikers in a few places before, particularly when I've had children with me - I pushed one off once (I was a lot younger and ballsier in those days!), well, he shouldn't have been close enough for me to do it, should he? I wouldn't do it nowadays mind you.



#49 Hoffs - I'll try and be brief. My 8 yr old son is going to swim the Channel in just over a day to try and raise money for a new Scout hall roof. Perhaps that's a bit too brief? He will swim four one hour sessions per week for an absolute maximum of 7 weeks in our local swimming pool, so max of 28 hours to swim 1416 x 25m lengths. Does that make sense? I think it's quite an achievement but I'm his mum so I would. He's dead excited about it. Planning to start, possibly, 25th January so I've got from now til then to sort out as much publicity as possible. Obviously all the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts etc will have sponsor forms and the local pool have said that they will promote it on their website and facebook page, and I'm hoping to get a piece in the local papers. I've written to all sorts of sports people, sportswear manufacturers/retailers, celebs but am not getting very far at all. I know it's not a massive charity but it's quite a significant challenge, I think. I've never tried to arrange anything like this before so I'm probably going about it all wrong. The Scouting organisation do so much for the kids, especially round here in the Borders where there isn't access to as many things as there are in towns and cities, and they do it all voluntarily plus they fundraise for other charities as a matter of course. We just thought it was about time someone did something for them for a change. Right, I'll stop, so much for brief!



Also, on the dog ball thing. My dogs are useless at finding or following the trajectory of a ball and they're whippets, they're supposed to hunt by sight! I end up fetching it more than they do. You must have a very sniff sensitive dog.

#74 SE...Wow, what a challenge. I guess there are no large companies in your area - they tend to have a 'charity fund' (when I didn't get any response from local shops when I did a half marathon for our local brain injury unit, a local large engineering company sent us a decent sized cheque) and I know a large petrol company has the same sort of arrangements. Maybe it would be worth casting your net a little wider. The Scouting (and Guiding) movement is brilliant and doesn't always get the publicity it deserves.

#74 Erica - wow, what an amazing thing for your son to do! A friend of mine did it, but she's an adult... when I first heard about it, I thought she was actually going to swim the Channel, rather than doing the equivalent in a swimming pool. Just a thought, and I'm not sure if this would work (and if the modders would allow it) but it's worth a try - if you could post a link to the Facebook page on here, then those of us who have FB accounts could 'like' and 'share' it, and spread the word that way.

I made Nigel's shallot & chestnut stew tonight and it was lovely, I minced the mushroom so wee my mushroom hating friend didn't notice them (although she did comment on the awful smell when I was cooking them). It needs a huge bunch of coriander and a little chilli to make it even better.

There is other stuff I need to comment on but will do so over the weekend - except to say Florence - I don't care what anyone else thinks please keep posting as many photos as possible, I love them. Especially given your comments that your point and click - you clearly have the most fantastic eye- something that cannot be taught.

ps I hate my kitchen tiles, on the list of things to fix

and finally the sprouts are mine (who in their right minds doesn't like sprouts - except Molly Coodles's that (which? a bit of grammar I've never mastered) have been boiling since Tuesday), the leeks are my weird sprout hating, leek loving friend's.

all veg are horrible apart from potatoes

i also hate curries,chillies anything spicey and fish yuk

i like gammon, sausages,burgers chicken only the breast dont like the wings or legs i like the meaty bit.
