A marvellous mention in dispatches JBG - well done :)



I hope all's well, I haven't had a chance to catch up completely with yesterday but will add my thoughts on the highs and lows of Christmas: like many families Christmas is bitter-sweet and we try to maintain a cheery and festive approach whilst the sadness of losing a daughter/sister is very much on our mind. We've always had quiet, immediate family events and so the loss is always apparent but as we, and particularly my sister, have always loved the holidays so we enjoy the champagne, presents and good cheer. Church on Christmas Eve (although these days rarely Christmas Day), carol singing at school and with choirs both here and in Cheshire is something I thoroughly enjoy. Buying gifts and sending cards to those both near and dear, and those with whom I only maintain a once-a-year contact, is all part of the fun. There is no doubt that I probably enjoy it all the more for the fact that I finish work week before and get at least 2 full weeks helps! I try to block out the over-commercialism and focus on family and friends.



Anyway - that aside, I'm looking forward to the blog party again this year. I might have some mince-pies in the the freezer from last year .... they'll be fine I'm sure!

Mayo Man - Be VERY careful with the coffee if yer go over a set of points at 90mph.... And also be VERY careful biting into yer bacon roll at anything upter 90 degrees.... Could end up arriivng at R2 aych Q with coffee and ketchup all over yersen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



Just wanted ter share with all 2 new milestones acheived in me quest ter try and become an olympic track cyclist in 2016...

Last week I 'it a new top speed accidently after me old time of 30,07mph stood for a couple of months... 30.10mph!!!

But yesterday on the way to work I was powering along on one of the fastest parts of me cycle and me speedo read 28mph... So a decided ter go for it....

Me new top speed 34.31mph or 55.20kph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wiggo won 'is olympic gold in the road time trail event with an average of 50.1kph... But that is the WHOLE 44km... I just 'it over that briefly... Never the less i'm getting better day by day!!!!!!

If I was on a carbon fibre cycle the same as Wiggo instead of me 20 year old moutain bike I would 'ave 'it around 50mph or 80kph pedalling at a similar cadence!!!!!!!!!!



But there's more:



Last night at 1am on me way 'ome from work a really tried ter break the illusive 20 minute barrier... I did it a while back 19.52 but that was a one off!!!!!!

After seeing dry conditions were forecast I gave it a go last night.... I got off to a sluggish start, still quick, but not very fast like i'd like... It was freezing and a 10mph 'eadwind made it even colder!!!!!! So the start of me ride wasn't very pleasant!!!!!!

But once I turned east and got warmed up then by 10 mins into my ride I really started flying!!!!!!!



I'm starting to really concentrating on my pedal strokes.... Forcing each stroke down to get alot of power!!!!!!

I'm really starting to sound like a pro-cyclist... Most cycles are slient as they go by but i've watched Wiggo on the Tour Of Britain race and when they all go past the cycles sound powerful/ angry... You can 'ear the power from their legs going through the tyres into the road!!!!!

Tyre road roar it's called of which i'm doing now so much I keep thinking a car is coming up behind me... I look over my shoulder only to realise it's me making the roar of the tyres!!!!!!!!

And my chain makes a destinctive noise too with each stroke... I'm starting to produce some power through the bicycle!!!!



As I came into my 'ome town I could sense this was good and a new personal best could be up for grabs....

Pedalling as fast as my lungs and legs would let me.... I crouched down to be more areodynamic and blasted into the final km!!!!!!!!

I was fighting 'ard... So out of breath and the pain in my legs.... But still fighting!!!!!! Fighting!!!!!

I took the sharp left 'ander flat at around 23mph.... right by the police station knowing a car could be around the corner!!!!!!!

But in the early 'ours every night I almost never see a car 'ere!!!!!!!

Still caution.... I took a wide line leaning like a motorbike on a race track..... As I came around the corner.....

A police car was just coming the other way.... I gave the policeman driving a fright.... Oh dear I 'ope 'e doesn't come after me for words of ADVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Luckily I think the local police know me now.... I often pass the same police late at night on my way 'ome so i'm sure most of the police know of me!!!!!!

Sometimes I think it looks suspicious late at night a lone cyclist pedalling like mad with a small rucksack on me back.... Looks like ave gotta bag of swag and i'm trying ter make a fast get away!!!!!!!



Anyway all was ok.... No police chasing me!!!!!!!!!!



I fought now into the last 400 metres.... I couldn't go any faster..... I so needed to get to the finish of my ride..... I was doing 28mph.... But now on the last stretch my legs 'ad gone.... 24mph I couldn't go faster despite giving it all into the last 100metres!!!!!!!!!!!

I 'it the brakes 'ard ter come to a stop at my back gate.... Violently 'itting a bump in the road surface and nearly losing control.... But not losing control what with my natural racing driver reflexes (another long story the racing driver thingy!!!!).... I stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I looked at my cycle computer.............................................



20.02!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



So, so, so, so close.... 2 seconds from my 20 minute target!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



But i'm feel so elated..... 20,02 is absolutely brilliant for me... I feel so positive... I am continually improving...... I just feel so motivated.... I feel now NOTHING will stop me from getting to Rio 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



'ope all don't mind me writing often about me cycling... But just keeping all upter date with me progress day by day... Yer could be witnessing an olympic champion in the making.... Or a deluded nutter entering mid-life crisis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for advice - the only thing I would add is that there is nothing too daft to be discussed here - it’s often the most obscure things that get people talking so just post whatever is in your head. And ask if you don’t understand something. Lord Ammo is Simon for example, OSM is “order of the silent mention” for when a song you choose gets played but you didn’t get a mention.



And Bingo’s posts are best enjoyed if you read them in a Liverpudlian accent.

Nothing new to add, some great suggestions above - I have been roped into decorating the work Christm*as tree - the students' last day is this Friday, so they are getting all excited about that huge holiday they're about to have.

As grandchild #2 was due Xmas eve and has now been here nearly 3 weeks already, my Christmas countdown has gone all kaput.

I have never really understood how early mapmakers could map a newly discovered territory like Africa or South America or even some of the earliest maps of Britain and Europe by measuring the distances and directions around the coast and then produce a map of the whole country or continent in the right shape, with everything properly joined up. In most cases, even the very earliest maps look pretty accurate, and are recognisable to us like an aerial view from space. Which of course, they had no access to!



I'm sure his Lordship will get Mr Garfield to explain all later.
