Mayo Pal - A thought my cycle training in the cold dark winter was a littlew 'ard going but walking across Antartica in the insanely cold and in the dark.... MADNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The very thought sends more than a shiver up me spine... Frightening if yer ask me!!!!!!!

Ter be so isolated in such SEVERE cold and dark.... And it's alot colder when it's dark..... 'ow Sir Ranulph Fiennes.... Unlike the idiots who getta knighthood by simply being the chairman of a blue chip company.... In some cases just their only achivement is they've been the berst bully boss and run the company on fear and personal excess and greeeeeed.... They do NOT deserve knighthoods but often get them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



Now people like SIR Ranulph Fiennes REALLY DO deserve a knighthood..... 100 times braver and better then a simple chairman of a blue chip company.... A doo feel Sir Ranulph will be blue also though in many areas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Simon was only gently mocking towards cutlery man last night I thought. No fish knives here. I did have soup spoons but the generic spoons tend to get used these days much to the disgust of some visitors. I have a cheese knife I use all the time but I do eat far too much cheese. Flo - I had to google Splayds.



I’m not a fan of kitchen gadgets as such - a good knife and a chopping board and you can achieve most things but I do love my apple corer / segmenter and my milk frother. And I do like a nice mug too.



Was it just my mum - when eating soup we had to tip the bowl away from us when finishing? And she never filled a cup or glass more than 2/3 full as to do otherwise “was rude”!



I am all for correct grammar JBJ but sometimes a clumsy sentence is worse than a grammatically incorrect one.



I’m off to see Bruce Springsteen in Belfast in July - I hate buying tickets so far in advance.

Flo, you must be in the little peep hole in the middle. Have you ever researched how it is, that the 'weather' as a rule always seems to miss you? Is it something to do with the Gulf stream? You are lucky :)

Bruce Springsteen tickets for July, Amelia? Last Friday I bought tickets for Bryan Ferry for NOVEMBER 2013 and had I not been online at 10am, I wouldn't have got any as almost all of them were gone before 10.15am when I checked!

#35 Swimming Sal, I don't think the rain will miss us today as it's looking cloudy in the direction of Edinburgh. I live not far from Dunbar that is supposed to be the sunniest place in Scotland and the same is said about our county and is often used by estate agents in their property information! All around the area are arable fields, often a sign of good weather/growing conditions.

Yes, and one of the most terrifying journeys ever and I've made a lot of journeys as you know! I had already done my round that day too. So all in all over 400 miles in dreadful conditions.



BUT.. it was a fabulous day and would I do it all over again? Hopefully not for a long time, as I hope Simon is firmly in 'the driving' seat now so to speak.

Wasn't the coldest journey as I was in the car, but the worst I had was from Hendon in NW London to Taplow. A total of nine hours. The first hour was London to Beaconsfield (4pm to 5pm), and in the snow that was acceptable. It then took me 45 minutes to get up the slip road and onto the A40. The remaining 5 miles home took me til 1am the following morning.

Just got back from me prom cycle ride and both the terdee's blog/ Sir Ranulph 'elped me terdee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A used the thought of 'ow 'ard it would be ter do what Sir Ranulph is going terdo AND of course what 'e 'as achieved.... And suddenly me 20km cycle ride in the cold (only +2) (noot -60).... And suddenly me ride seemed so much easier!!!!!!!



A great way ter motivate mesen mentally ter make me move faster physically!!!!!!!!!



A most nice cycle ride too.... The police radar van was on the main road down ter the seaside... 27mph a was doing in a 30 zone!!!!!!!!!!

Then onter the prom and despite a nasty freeezing 14mph side wind all was most nice with me thermal socks a bought yesterdee!!!!!!

A went inter a will known shop... The one with Max and an extra 'x' in it's name and no sports socks suitable... But then a spotted 2 foot long ski socks!!!!!!!!!

Bought a pack of 2 and man are they superbly comfortable and warm!!!!!!

Perfect for cycling as they go right upter nearly me knees of knobblyness!!!!!!!!!!

For sure am going ter return terdee or termozz and buy more pairs!!!!!!!!!

So me freezing toes are now just abit pinchy but alot warmer from before!!!!!!!!!

AND after yesterdee's cycle in which there was an even worse cold wind.... Despite me woolly 'at a could feel an icy pain penetrating through me 'at on the top of me 'ead.... so terdee 2 woolly 'ats.... Again perfect on the 'ead!!!!!!!!!!!!!



A purposely rode 2 gears down from top ter concentrate on a 'igher cadence... upter 85 ter 90 cadence.... 21mph-ish!!!!!!!!

And concentrating driving each calf down with each downstroke... Not easy terdo... Usually people just cycle without thinking about it!!!!!!!

But ter try and get inter a rhythm of delivering extra power is easier said than down.... All good practice!!!!!!!!!



Terdee a VERY respectable time of 46.48!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



And yesterdee despite a VERY VERY 'arsh 16mph side and 'ead wind coming off the sea... A did the gig in 49.50!!!!!!!!!!



In the summer me times will be ALOT lower as the warmer the air.... The thinne rthe air is.... 'ence less wind resistance!!!!!!!!!!!!



And ave got me eye on a 2.5k carbon fibre racing bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



Went in a cycle shop asking about racing cycles.... Ave never rode one in me life!!!!!!

Ave 'ad a Raleigh Chopper... Grifter.... A touring bike and now me mountain bike.... But never a racing bike!!!!!!!!!

Asked about the difference in speed and the bloke told me a racing bike is way way faster than a mountain bike!!!!!!!!!!

All good.... Maybe me times could be well under 40 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!



Wiggo would do 20km in 25 minutes in racing conditions!!!!!!!!!!!!



But for now riding a 'eavy mountain bike is great for building strength and stamina..... And if a did me ride in 35 minutes instead of 50 minutes.... Then am only getting 35 minutes of training instead of 50 minutes..... So actually buying a racing bike for now is a waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!

#67 Miss Eltoe - No snow here, we haven't had so much as a flake! I believe they've had a bit out towards the Peak District, but not here. The skies are pretty grey though... :-S

I was just watching Sir Ranulph Fiennes saying during an interview a few minutes ago that on his trip to the Antarctic, he will encounter temperatures from as low as between -70 to -90 degrees! Sal's -18 sounded low enough and goodness knows how anyone can survive such extreme temperatures!

Re cutlery - yes to most of the above, but most of it rarely used. The tipping of the soup bowl is just common sense - when you've nearly finished your soup it makes it easier to get those last few spoonfuls out of the bowl. And the reason you tip it away from you is that if you tipped it towards you there's a risk it would end up in your lap...

They were cracking - already cooked, just need thawing out & getting the meat out = use the meat in risotto, bisque, fish pie (oo la la that's a posh fish pie!)

If Simon reads today's blog messages, I would like to thank him for 'introducing' me to the fabulous June Tabor and Oysterband, having heaped praise on their Ragged Kingdom album earlier this year, which I bought because of Simon. I know that several of us on here have discovered 'new' music, bands or solo acts this year, thanks to Simon either playing their music or having them guesting on his show.



I saw them last night in an 'intimate' setting (tables, candles, wine etc) and they were just wonderful... June's voice is sublime and her harmonising with the lead singer was stunning, also she also sang two beautiful songs unaccompanied, one of them was Gaelic.



Before the show started I was chatting to people in the loo and in the bar (coffee available too) and several people had travelled up to 500 miles yesterday, just to see them and others had come from Lincolnshire, Manchester and Birmingham (after seeing the band on Tuesday night and will see them gain tonight) and a couple on our table had driven up from Oldham and said they have seen either Oysterband on their own, or Oysterband with June Tabor, 170 times!

After the show, everyone except June, who was resting her voice, came out into the bar area where CDs were on sale, to chat, sign autographs and John Jones, the lead singer, announced at the end to give them two minutes and they would come out for a drink and chat.

I spoke to him and thanked them for a superb show and I told him I was pleased they had received four awards in the Radio 2 Folk Awards' show and said I was a recent convert to their music, thanks to Simon Mayo. He replied saying he owes a lot to Simon and he said he often listens to his show.



Sorry this is so long and I don't know if anyone else enjoys a bit of folk music, or likes or has seen this band, but they are highly recommended and I hope they'll be back here very soon.... such an amazing group of musicians and really friendly chatty people on and off stage!

I might give them a go Suzieee for recipes as you say.



But, to have a lobster which you have pulled out of the sea and on the table half an hour later...oh dear, I'm drooling. Still its out of season now, so Lidl it is, unless Aldi have them?

If I was going to tip my soup bowl, it would be straight into my mouth. Now that makes sense! ;)

Gluten-free Mince pie challenge! (There are dodgier ones that get through than that!)



I'm determined to make them every bit as tasty as the 'normal' ones and at a fraction of the rip off price that they sell them in the shops.

One of the perks of having coeliac disease, is that some of the companies send you their products in the hope that you will get them on prescription.. £4 a loaf!



So, I'm going to try the Glutafin recipe, if they come out like bricks, then Jamie, I'm heading your way.
