Bingo Star's Quest Ter Become An Olympic Champion Track Cyclist By 2016 - DAY 80:



So while many 'ave forgotten all about the olympics and 'ow it inspired many now is where the ones who really were inspired stay inspired... I am one of them!!!!!

I know ter get amazingly good at cycling a do need ter cycle 6 days a week... maybe 3 'ours a day!!!!!

Chris Boardman said 'e often cycled for 8 'ours a day training!!!!!

I've returned the place a cycled alot as a child and in me twenties along the sea prom near me mother's on the Wirral - I can cycle in safety off the road, and all in the fresh sea air and the beauty of looking across to Wales!!!!

Me cycle ter work is 10km... Me seaside power cycle is 20.28km.... But a need ter up me game!!!!!!

So a thought why not do the same distance that Bradley Wiggans did ter win 'is gold in the road time trial of 44km!!!!!!!

A know am still way slower than a top pro cyclist, partly my cycle is way inferior... But mostly my leg strength and stamina is way off the mark.... Well above the average person but way off from a pro!!!!!



A got ready for me power blast of around 2 'ours cycling last Fridee... (Wiggo did it in 50mins.... Oh dear!!!!!)

But 'e was in race conditions, on closed roads and on a 20k very fast superlight 8kg racing cycle compared ter my 20 year old, 130 quid bone shaker 17kg mountain bike!!!!!



A set off and the first mile down to the coast it wasn't good with a freezing 'eadwind... It was that freezing day recently when we 'ad artic winds coming in over the UK!!!!!

The thought ran through my 'ead 'Trust me ter do this 44km ride on a freezing day!!' But with thermal gloves, woolly 'at, thick jog pants and two tops on and a knew soon a would be sweating from cycling 'ard!!!!!!

Soon I was onter the promenade and upter 'oylake!!!!!

A few other cyclists we out and a saw one man going the opposite direction fighting the wind... A made a mental note: Coming back, the same way as 'im, I was in for difficult ride against a strong artic wind!!!!

The direction a was going firstly the wind was behind me and a flew.... A made the most of it and one of me fastest ever ter 'oylake... 11mins!!!!! I turned around and 'eaded back ter New Brighton!!!!!

A soon as a turned around the wind 'it me like a frozen wall!!!!!!

But a dropped one gear and fought... powered.... NOTHING can stop me!!!!!!

It was 'ard going!!!!

After a few miles suddenly the song that inspires me, written for the olympics, by Danny O'Donoghue & Will.i.am 'all Of Fame started going through my 'ead:-

Fighting the cold wind a felt so fired up thinking of this song.... It really 'elped me mentally and physically!!!!



After 6 miles a caught up the cyclist a 'ad seen before and powered past 'im!!!!!!

A little further a reached me marker & turned around ter 'ead back to 'oylake again.... Passing the same cyclist a third time!!!!!!!!

A know people reading this blog will think am abit deluded thinking of the olympics..... But when I get on a cycle i'm faster and stronger than anyone out on the prom!!!!!!!

A was 'eading back ter 'oylake with the wind behind me again.... Absoutely flying again!!!!!

The roar off my tyres sounded angry.... My feet barely able to keep on my pedals I was going so fast!!!!!!

I caught up a very fit looking couple jogging... Yer know the type who look like they like themlseves, maybe fitness freaks... 'aving said that they could 'ave been pro athletes of some kind.... I roared past them... Slightly startling them!!!!!

I chuckled to myself and thought 'eat my dirt dudes!!!!!!'



I got back to the town of Meols.... Then suddenly I felt my bike was not right!!!!!!

Me back end was loose....

I looked down.... My rear tyre was losing air..... OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I felt so deflated!!!!!!!!!!!

I could not believe it.... My first puncture in over 5 years.... And on all days of days when I was doing this experiment!!!!!!!!!!

I was so, so, so disapointed and felt angry too.... I was fired up for this ride.... And despite the bad weather I was achieving my goal.... And know a puncture!!!!!

I 'ad to abort my ride... Thinking fast I would 'ave ter get the train 'ome!!!!

I needed ter get as near as possible to Meols railway station before I lost all the air!!!!

'alf a mile from the station I 'ad ter dismount before I ruined my tyre!!!!!!

I stopped my timing app.....

1 'our exactly and 35 seconds.... And 14.34miles!!!!!!

Just over 'alf distance and well on target ter beat the 2 'our target for 44km!!!!!!!



I waited at the railway station... Contemplating.... Telling myself this is all just part of it.... To get to the top I will 'ave setbacks!!!!!!!



Next week.... I will try again... This time I 'WILL' do it!!!!!

PPS Mayo Man - A would love ter go ter 'offman's retirement 'ome especially if the people mentioned above where there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#12 I attended the Christmas party at my Dad's yesterday. It was fab! For that (if not the other not so nice aspects of retirement/care homes) I want to move in now :-)

Reading back - as others have already said, a very moving post. So terribly sad when a young person's life is cut short. If an elderly person dies it's also sad of course, but there is that feeling of "well, they've had a good life but it was their time to go". But that poor young man's life was only just beginning - he's missed out on girlfriends, driving a car, going to University, becoming a father - all that he might have achieved in life. It must be absolutely devastating for his family and friends - I just can't begin to imagine how they are feeling.

When I looked through the list of records released in 1994, it was a bit like looking at a current list - Who? Never heard of them!



I think 1994 was when the Mr was made redundant and we were too busy trying to make enough money to keep the roof over our heads rather than worry too much about current releases! Even so, not a good year IMO.

Something I have been meaning to say for while - Simon used to blog about what he was listening to when blogging - I know you are just as likely to be blogging from a train these days as your kitchen but when possible please let us know what you are listening to Lord A.

Billie - I am so sorry - I noticed my Molly misspelling but not yours! I fear I will never get a job as a proof reader!



Jennie - I'm glad that something was decided during your hospital visit - hope you are feeling ok about the decision. Ages ago you blogged about not giving up and to do so was only cheating yourself. Your comments really touched a chord with me and every time I am tempted not to walk or do yoga or whatever you pop into my head - so I just wanted to say thank you!



Jeffrey - little better than getting a song you love played - we are fortunate I think, well I feel fortunate anyway. And I looking forward to your Mastermind appearance - Sky+ all set as I am galavanting that night.



As Flo said yesterday, so much music, so little time. I’m not really listening to much new stuff at the moment - loads of stuff that is new to me which is of course the fault of this place and you lot (thank you). I am a complete Spotify convert. Flo mentions Oysterband and seconds later I am listening to them - £10 a month seems well worth it.



But not listening to new stuff does make it hard to jump up and down and get enthusiastic about bands that have been about for decades even if I have just discovered them because most folk here will have been listening to them for every anyway.



Not especially new but not someone I haven’t seen discussed on here is a guy called Lucas Renney. He was the front man of a band called The Golden Virgins - they only released one album - it was well enough received but for whatever reason they split up. I love his voice - he has subsequently released a solo album - quite different to the Golden Virgins (which is much rockier) but his lovely voice remains - his solo album is called Strange Glory and it is well worth a listen. As is the Golden Virgin’s Songs of Praise album. He made it onto a The Word CD so he is doing something right. I am completely useless at talking about music but I guess you would call it folk - I can just hear his amazing voice; it gives me shivers.



On the bowl tipping - Shona - I was told too it was rude to tip it towards you too, but why??



Ken - bucket list of artists we haven’t seen? Now there is an interesting topic - off to do my list ... can we do dead as well as alive? Jeff Buckley top of that list for me anyway.





Off for coffee and a blether, as for the retirement home idea ... I don’t know where to start.

#44 Amelia, feel free to jump up and down about artists that others have been listening to, it's still new to you. I still love that first listen to something, even if it's decades old. I left the gig last night with three Peter Bruntnell CDs (would have been four if I'd had another tenner on me!) and will look forward to listening to them. Guy on the Merch Desk looked kinda surprised that I was buying three from the support act, but I already have all Kathleen Edwards' albums :-)

#44 - I'm pretty sure it's the right thing to do, Amelia. He said that these cysts can grow and if it does, the operation to remove it is consequently more difficult and prone to complications. He seems quite excited about doing the op too! Apparently it is an unusual one and he only sees 3 or 4 a year so it is of interest to him - whatever floats your boat! Glad to be an inspiration!



Now, a retirement home for worn out bloggers - with Bingo racing round the garden with his Zimmer frame, I presume.



Oh, sad news too for nature lovers. The Mr went up the garden yesterday to empty the veg scraps into the compost bin and found a fox had drowned in our pond. The pond froze the other night but not very thick and then it snowed and it settled on the ice, so we reckon the fox broke through it when he tried walking across it and then couldn't get out because of the ice around him. ;0(

#50 Actually, thinking about it, I don't think the lead singer was actually related to Bono, he just had a passing resemblance to him. D'oh!



I meant to say, that I'm really looking forward to the film version of Les Miserables, I love Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, and I think Ann Hathaway is fantastic. I loved her as Selina Kyle (sort of Catwoman) in TDKR, and she has a lot of potential for the future too. I wouldn't be surprised to see her winning an Oscar someday.

Hope the cyst doesn't grow too large in the meantime, Jennie. Sad about the fox. What did you do with the body? Someone near us killed (so I'm told) one of the many urban foxes that we have locally (I'm sure some have featured on BBC Wildlife programmes, as we live about 100 yards from BBC Bristol - home of wildlife production) and put it in a black bin bag with its head sticking out. The bag was left on the pavement just by our house for all to see. It was quite grotesque and whatever one thinks of urban foxes, there is really no need for such appalling behaviour (in my opinion). I'm hard pushed to see harm in anything - I'm the resident spider-rescuer in our family, although I'm not overly keen on slugs eating my precious runner beans.

#44 Amelia... as well as looking up Oysterband, include June Tabor with them and have a listen to 'Fountains Flowing' by June Tabor and Oysterband, from their 'Ragged Kingdom' album, as it's lovely.... well I think it is!



Also 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' sounded rather good the other night and I also enjoyed hearing them sing 'At The Dark End Of The Street', a song I like by Ry Cooder, James Carr and Eva Cassidy. If you want to hear them singing unaccompanied have a listen to 'When I Was No but Sweet Sixteen'



As soon as I hear about someone new on here, I look them up on YouTube or just g**gle the name and I'm off to look up Luca Renney as I have never heard that name or The Golden Virgins. Ken often comes up with some new names, or names that are new to me and as I have got older, I seem to have widened my music interests and looking out for 'new' artistes to see live that I would probably not have considered before.



#39 Deebee, if we go for the retirement home, will Simon be joining us? Also if we have a resident cook, I'd like Rosemary Shrager as she seems such a good laugh and would probably serve up good helpings of food, not the daft little stacks in the middle of a plate with a smear of sauce, that TV chefs dish up and Rosemary would make proper puddings like steamed syrup sponge pudding, spotted dick and fruit crumbles and thick custard!

1994! Got to be GIRLS AND BOYS (my regular ARFO choice). Don't want the credit though since I wasn't first...or second, or third...

We put him in black sacks and then in one of our wheely bins - we have 3! - as it was being collected that day - advice from local council. Not a very dignified end I know, but hopefully he will end up in the ground and so the cycle will start again...

I, too, get fed up with slugs eating my veg and flowers but this year I read somewhere about putting oats down around plants you want to protect and the slugs eat them instead of the plants. And it seemed to work so next year I shall buy the cheapest oats I can find then see if it works again. What happens to the slugs I don't know but it is nothing like the effect salt has on them - ugh....

And also if the birds/animals eat the slugs that have been eating oats, no harm comes to them as it would if they had been eating slug pellets.

Me cycle story above is all 100% TRUE, the only thing it was a couple of weeks ago.... Been meaning ter tell all about me failed attempt ter match Wiggo's olympic distance!!!!!!



Anyway a BIG rant is coming up now over the normally excellent BBC Weather website.... But terdee they got it TOTALLY wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ave just got back from me 20km prom cycle training ride!!!!!

The BBC weather website yesterdee 'ad for terdee the sun symbol for all morning and up until 3pm!!!!!!

No mention of rain except for the odd possible shower and a 22mph wind!!!!!!!



A was just about ter go out at 11.30 when an angry dark cloud blew over... Waited then went out!!!!!!

The wind was the most 'orrendous 30mph plus gusting side wind!!!!!

Despite this a was only a minute down on arriving at me first turning point.... Then back fighting... FIGHTING the wind.... But a was in control and all good for building strength and stamina.... Even though a wanter be an indoor track cyclist not outdoor in the middle of winter fighting a gale force wind!!!!!!

Anyway there was no sun but angry clouds EVERYWHERE out at sea!!!!!!!

When a got 'alf way back the wind was so strong a was riding me bike leaning into the wind!!!!!!

Then came the freezing rain and 'ail!!!!!

A couldn't see... A was soaked... A was freezing!!!!!!

So much for the beeb's sunny weather symbols!!!!!!!!



It was so bad a was nearly getting blown off me cycle with 'orzontal rain & 'ail... a couldn't see!!!!!!

And a was caught in a very exposed area!!!!!

Trapped nowhere to shelter!!!!!!!

A was swearing and cursing and saying ter meself this is "INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Waited 15 mins then when, despite grey cloud everywhere, a carried on with me cycle against the impossible side wind.... Freezing and wet through!!!!!!!

#61. Rather like giving a pony unsoaked sugar beet! Not sure the pony would burst, but it could give them a nasty attack of colic and incur a large vet bill.

I wonder how strong a slug's skin is if it bursts like that. Good thing we don't suffer in the same way - all that tubing pouring out would make a bit of a mess everywhere.

It wasn't meant to be a discussion point - it was late, I couldn't sleep and wanted to be bossy. As Miss Claus says, death at any stage of life is tragic, but such a young person, doubly so. You have been v kind with your comments and I will pass them on to Teen Berry, who is the one who needs the comfort most.

Just spotted this article on-line about the tv programme where a cyclist went out on the road showing bad drivers!!!!!

Didn't see the documentary but I know there's both good and bad cyclists out there!!!!!

I was in London for the CIN gig a few backs when an angry cyclist came at me as I crossed the road in front of 'im.... Ring 'is bell and shouting at me!!!!!!

A didn't cross right in front... a saw 'im coming at a distance and crossed well in good time to give 'im plenty of room to go past behind me!!!!!!

But 'e came at me angrily... These are the idiots who give the good cyclists a bad name!!!!!!!!

But there's good and bad everywhere... I know of bad truck drivers and bad car drivers... I see this both driving a my truck and car... Just a shame some people label all as being the same!!!!!!

Suppose some could say i've noticed Audi drivers are the worst.... but again not all!!!!!!

Alot of good Audi drivers... just seems ter be the car of choice for aggresive types... suppose same cycles is the vehilce of choice in London in particular for eco maniacs who think it's ok ter jump red lights and basically break the rules of the 'ighway code!!!!!!

Bingo, some cyclists on the really fast looking bikes are a nuisance at times, especially when they suddenly weave in and out of cars that are pulling away at bust traffic lights. The other day I was driving down a hill near me and started to overtake a cyclist and as soon as he saw me he peddled like hell so I just dropped down a gear, put my foot down and then saw him in my rear mirror and I can see why someone in Bingo's article wants to knock them off their bike!

Can I add another vote for Bruce and Streets of Philadelphia?

All cobwebs blown away after an extremely bracing walk with a now, very muddy, Jack Russell.



Far too late for any ARFO suggestions. Besides, I was up to my ears in Thomas The Tank Engine, Spot and Sooty and Sweep in 1994, thanks to my children who were very small at the time. I did occasionally tune in to Radio 4, along with our local radio for my sanity. I do remember listening to Johnnie Walker on Radio 1 on Saturday afternoons then. Seems a lifetime ago.



Hoffs/Holly - a very moving post yesterday. Quite an emotional day for you and your son. I, also, was moved by Zoe's subsequent post about the sudden loss of her dear Granddad. The death of a child is truly awful, and those that are left not only mourn for the loss of young life but also the potential long life that was cruelly snatched away. But any sudden bereavement is hard for those left behind, as it is then too late to tell them what you always meant to say but don't get round to saying. Hoffs, you are so right, enjoy every single day and let your friends and family know that you love them.



#75 Flo, I used to drive across Cambridge every day picking up my children from school. The cyclists were an absolute nightmare, especially the students who seemed to have no idea about the Highway Code. They thought that traffic lights didn't apply to them. I saw that lad in the programme, and although I did sympathise with some of the cyclists, I thought he came across as a little antagonistic. Some of them take really stupid risks.

Yo Flo... A agree there's many cyclists who cycle badly... The one thing is I am one of the most experienced people yer could possibly find on the roads... I am a cyclist, a pedestrian, a car driver and a truck driver.... So I 'ave experience from all angles!!!!!!!

Not only that i've driven petrol tankers, oversized loads... 180mph supercars down to me old 85mph Fiat Panda... so not only a am car or truck driver I 'ave experience what it's like ter drive different types of vehicles and the different situations/ treatment yer get from different roads users!!!!!!

Ave passed me advanced driving test and 'eld a racing licence so a can turn on at an instant any kind of driving style from defensive driving, driving ter pefection like as if a was on a driving test or ter going around corners on ice sideways like a rally driver driving on snow or ice!!!!!!!

Ave even 'ad an 40 tonne Eddie Stobart truck completely sliding on sheet ice.... But as ave got incredable natural reactions all is in control at all times!!!!!!!!!!!!



As for cyclists and trucks.... Ave been there in me 44 tonne truck.... struggling ter get the acceleration ter safely overtake a cyclist on a narrow road.... after being 'eld up for a good while.... A manage ter finally pull out safely tghen 'ad ter stop at a set of lights.... Only for the same cyclist ter come up me inside... Then when the lights change.... Am stuck behind 'im again!!!!!!

Ave overtaken again.... Then stopped a tlights ahead again... This time postioning me truck right upter the kerb ter stop the cyclist doing it again!!!!!!!

What 'as 'e done.... Come around me on the pavement.... And then again stopping me getting past..... It's lucky am a decent driver watching me mirrors closely as we 'ave alot of blind spots 'igh up in a truck!!!!

It's no wonder sometimes yer 'ear of cyclist getting killed by trucks.... Expecially when yerv got idiots like the one I mentioned above!!!!!!



If i'm cycling I wait behind a truck at light clear in sight of 'is mirror so as not ter get in 'is way!!!!!!!!!



Then there's the other angle of... I've been driving at 50mph along the motorway as i'm early for work so there's no point wasting fuel going at 70 or more!!!!!!

Only for an irate trucker ter come 2 metres behind me and nearly run me off the road!!!!!!!!!

Trying ter prove a point and force me ter speed up!!!!!!!!!



So I get it at all angles.... I just don't understand why we are all nasty to each other!!!!

Is this what my great grandad fought for.... For a free country so we can be free to 'ate each other!!!!!!!!!?????????????????



It actually VERY easy ter follow the very simple 'ighway code and be nice to each other.... Why though so many seem unable to do this..... I will never understand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



Atleast ave gotta full no-claims bouns and completely endorsement free driving licence!!!!!!

He was too close to me for me to be able to get the company name to report him (assume it was a him). Bingo, I just know you would never drive so dangerously.

Ahaaa! Bunner finally gets a mensh, and with that I lay him to rest. I will come back with another HMHB character at some point (Stringy Bob?), but for now I'll stop hiding, and return to my PoS moniker, until I can think of a christmassy one.



I've lost count of my ARFO crowns (5 or 6, 5 I think), so I'll try to refrain from chasing those as well. Although I'll probably be at it again next week.



On a much more serious note, and particularly Ken and Lilac Blue, can I be so presumptuous as to suggest you may like to exercise a little caution as to what you post on these open boards and blogs. It is indeed very much a tragedy what happened to that poor nurse. She was, it seems, involved with the hoax call, but you cannot extrapolate from that that the hoaxers were directly responsible for having any influence on her subsequent action. What they did may not have been playing on her mind at all. It is all very sad, and after the furore over what happened to Lord McAlpine, I think that we all have to be wary. I'd hate to see fellow bloggers falling foul of any similar actions to all of those tweeters. I think that the ladies family need time and space to come to terms with their loss, and the media are probably not going to be very helpful in that regard. It will all come out eventually, and it's probably best to reserve judgement until much later. I'll get off this lofty equine beast now, and go and pose in front of the morror with my new crown.

#83 Mo, that sounds scary and I can't bear lorries (or cars) that tailgate me - I think lorries do it to get into the slip-stream to save fuel (?) Could you have taken a photo of the lorry or the reg plate as the police can trace the plate back to the owner and the company could perhaps apprehend the driver!



#91 Bingo, the nurse who has died had not even been 'punished' for having taken the call and apparently no complaints from the Royals either and the hospital had been offering her support. Perhaps it had just preyed on her mind that she'd caused embarrassment to the hospital or to the Royals. Perhaps being foreign, it was probably much harder for her to have been able to detect whether or not it was the Queen on the other end. Very very sad and Christmas is fast approaching for her two children :(

Mo & Flo (there is a gag in there somewhere) - tail-gaters are near the top of my list of offenders who will be severely punished when I rule the world. Just behind using mobiles while driving. I don’t drive especially slowly so if I am there is a good reason for it - sitting on my tail is not going to make me go any faster. It is especially bad in icy / snowy conditions. I learnt to drive in Inverness and have driven during Scottish winters for years so I guess I have an advantage over the idiots who don’t realise that you need to leave about 10 times the gap when the roads are slippy.



Flo - I agree completely with your comments about ticket touts (also on my list, see above). How dare people make money from the resale of tickets, it cheats me and it cheats the artists and it makes me mad. How difficult would it be to make the resale of tickets for more than face value illegal?

Thanks for the support. Was in a long, long, inching forward queue on a downward slope in very heavy rain. Only 6 years until the bypass will be open! Maybe ;-). One slip of the foot & he'd have been in the back of me. Little speed, but a huge vehicle. And I have personal experience of how much damage can be done as a result of low speed crashes. Wasn't in a position to get the number plate unfortunately.
