Blogging and watching TV. It's that president chap making a speech. Decided not to stay up but had all the tension I needed waiting for the 6 am news to start. Breakfast with the TV on this morning in contravention of family rules I expect. Normally it's radio only of course but occasionally pictures help a little if you're trying to explain the world to the kids. And then the need for music returns...

And this morning I'm recording Taylor Swift for Drivetime consumption. She's played for us before and the woman appears unstoppable. 22 million albums sold and her new cd 'Red' has sold 1.2 million in the first week. This is popularity the way few solo artists aged 23 ever get. She'll sing a couple of tunes and I'll report back tomorrow...Then it's a Cameron Diaz chat for the movie show (I know, it's tough here) and we are again live at 5 for DT and Squeeze playing live. This is always good news. Glen and Chris have so many great songs that we hardly know where to start. They're off on tour again and will strum some favourites tonight. I saw them live in Southend in 1987 and it was one of the best gigs ever. Like ever, as Taylor Swift might say. Some Squeeze memories from 6.

And oldies for OBAMA please. A slight variation from yesterday's theme I believe and certainly enough to produce a different crop of tunes. And come 5pm it'll still be the only show in town.

Have a healthy and encouraging Wednesday, see you after 5.

John, I think your I'M STILL STANDING suggestion is almost guaranteed to get a play - excellent choice!

I do have to wonder who decided on 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered' as an election campaign tune, with it's lyrics "I've done a lot of foolish things, that I really didn't mean..." Seemed to work though...

HE'S THE MAN - MARK KNOPFLER

  • Comment number 22.

Sighs of relief all around - generally that it's all over for '4 more years'. The Canadians will also be much happier now.

It's (almost) a pity that Governor Romney didn't win because I could have suggested a tune by tonight's studio guests that would have reflected the state of play :- UP THE JUNCTION - SQUEEZE. I wouldn't advocate that now, but others may disagree.

I listened to quite a bit of the Jeff Wayne section of last night's show. At the risk of committing heresy, I found the new version of the music disappointing. Liam Neeson covered well for Richard Burton, but I didn't think the updated music added anything to the original. I'm sure many will disagree - there seemed to be plenty of people emailing & texting last night who liked it. I have the original and I'll happily continue to listen to that.

I also saw Squeeze last tour round in Reading. The Lightning Seeds were support and general consensus was Squeeze played for 15 minutes over the ideal and that The Lightning Seeds needed another 15 minutes. Both were great though. Remember having the pink vinyl of Cool for Cats...happy days.

Really wishing I hadn't got out of bed today! Supposed to have arrived in London well over an hour ago for a course, but new rules meant I had to go from Northampton station rather than locally - that alone took nearly an hour and a half. I missed my planned train and the back-up, the next one was cancelled due to a problem on the line, which is still affecting subsequent trains (so I'm still on the train!) I have to leave the course early as I have parents' evening tonight, so I'm go to get about 2 hours of the course before I have to head back again!!

    So grumpy :(

At least Obama won... Have tweetled a couple of oldies from yesterday's suggestions!

If someone doesn't let me off this train soon I'm going to start crying!

31 (hex) it is. I like the idea of being in my 3n's (or is it 3x's? Or 3n/x's) for another d more years :-)

Which raises an interesting question. If you had an unknown or variable numeral in a number you usually use "n" as I recall, so 3nnn for example. For variable characters in a text string then something like "x". So what do you use for hex where it could be either an n or an x where n is 0-9 and x is a-f?

Is that a homework sucks type question? :-)

Where has the day gone?? A whirl of Presidential DM's and round robin spoofs, that's where!

Sorry to hear that Mr Loofah is not oh sorry MITT is not getting something for his billions spent on wee flags and his tour of America...He and Donald will be consoling each other this morning no doubt on their 'conspiracy theories' that it was all a fix!! Pah and Phut.

    RE Mr O's re-election,

Would like to add my tweets:

LET'S GO ROUND AGAIN by AWB; HERE YOU COME AGAIN by Dolly P; BACK ON TOP by Van the Grumpy Old Man... oh and Michelle by the Beatles.

Off to the cake shop in Oxford to look at cupcakes and the like for #2 daughter's B'day - yes, yes, I know I should make them, maybe I will when I see how much they are.

NB from t'other blog, sorry to hear about the (un)Civil Wars, I tried to get a ticket to the nearest gig but it was sold out - maybe just as well. What a shame - the dates have been removed from their website already - let's hope they manage to patch things up.

Some friends of mine I think are in a similar vein (musically, I hope only) to the CW's - called Coarse Envelope - a folky duo. My friend Amy plays violin. If you like the CW's maybe you'll like them:

IF YOU THINK YOU CAN CROSS THE FIELD IN 45 SECONDS, DON'T. THE BULL CAN DO IT IN 30.

  • Comment number 73.

#69 if it is a money spider, hope you got a Euromillions ticket for last night (100+ euro rollover!)

#70 I kept a diary from 1971 - 1981 (when I started work so life was just 'Meh' every day..) the only one I have still is 1981 as my mum cleared out under my old bed in their house and threw them all out (plus concert programmes, Queen's Night at the Opera and the like.) Waaaah

My 1981 diary was with me luckily or it would have gone the same way. That's why my attic is full of my kids stuff for them to sort/throw out.

#72 I have suffered from the 'joke' that farmers play at legitimate walkers on their land, following 'right of way' signs I have seen things such as a permanent sign next to a waymarker saying 'Bull in field' ha ha - with my eyesight any non-moving bush at the far end of a field seems like a bull waiting for a target.

and of course my fave was the farmer who hung the feeding trough over the stile so that as you walk towards it, lots of very very young hungry bulls rush towards it

    Ha Bloo*y Ha.

  • Comment number 74.

#63 Helloooo Deevs!!!! *waves* You are doing a sterling job mustering the troops, and I will certainly be asking all my friends/colleagues to phone in on the 16th November.. This year I think there are going to be 12 (yes twelve!) of Simon's bloggers answering the phones, alongside about twenty or so of Chris's bloggers. So that's - very roughly - about a 1 in 3 chance of speaking to one of us.

    :o)

  • Comment number 75.

Congratulations to Obama - and thank God the U.S. elections have finished!

I'm surprised that no-one so far has suggested this, but it stood out from Obama's speech -

Maybe not well known - but it's a lovely song.

    All the best, Kris

#73 - Farmer Palmer says GET ORF MOY LAAAAAND !!

(Other comic book stereotypes are also available).

  • Comment number 77.

#75 Puuurfect choice, lovely song and quite a folky ness to it, pertinent for a Wednesday!

#76 a farmer has asked me once why I was circumnavigating his field through which the waymarker signs were pointing (by walking thru his farmyard) and I told him that the lively salivating young bullocks at the gate I had to climb over (20 odd of them!) had put me off, 'They're ok if you just push and shove them out of the way' he said....to a 5' tall, slight, walker!

    Git.

They do all they can to discourage walkers using right of ways so that they can say they are no longer walked and get them removed from official rights of way maps.

    Double gits.

    *rant over*

'course if I win the rollover next Friday, I might become one of the miserable 'Gerrroorrf my laaand' Landowners too . .

Am so glad 'e won :-)))))))))))))))))

A feel ok yes all politicians 'ave te rputta bitta spin on.... bit of a show... But mostly a really believe 'e is a VERY good and genuine man who does want to do good for America and the world!!!!!!!

Not just a businessman or oil greedy war mongering presidents like some in the past.... Obama 'as taken the USA and the world through the worst economic time since 1929 and the Great Depression!!!!!!!!

    Middle East terrorism 'as dropped!!!!!!!!

And the world is getting ever closer ter being as one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My only upset is that a US President can't do more than 2 terms.... So this is 'is final 4 years in office!!!!!!!!!

Maybe the world isn't gonna end on 22nd December 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The start of better times for all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS Just ter share me CLP blog for terdee:

Greetings CLP, WIGGO & ALL Bloggers...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

CLP - Come on since yerv got Wiggo on yer show termoz.... Gis us a Wiggo blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????????!!!!!@???!

Ave just got from doing me own bit of cycle training along the prom 'ere on The Wirral... WHATTA KILLER of a ride!!!!!!!

Gale force wind in one direction..... It's like trying ter ride against a wall of wind!!!!!!!

It wazza wall of wind constructed by strong mortar called better known as mother nature!!!!!!!

Am quickly learning the more cycling a do the more often it needs repairs/ servicing!!!!!!

Just collected it from the bike shop after a rear wheel 'ub service due to me wheel wobble getting worse!!!!!!!

AND a chance ter test out me new cycle computer complete with cadence app!!!!!!

Got off to a good steady start... 21mph and a steady cadence of 70!!!!!!!

Then against the wind 65cad.... 14mph!!!!!!!

SUDDENLY the wind got up like CCCCCRRRRAAAAAYYYYYzeee.... A saw the dark ANGRY clouds coming in off the sea.... Obviously accompanied by gale force winds but no rain thankfully!!!!!!!!

A was down to 11mph fighting like crazy mad!!!!!

Then turn around at 'oylake and rocket time back!!!!!!!

A was flying on me mountain bike at a steady 26mph.... 90cad.... touched 101!!!!!!

After 7 mins of this flat our riding a felt pain coming up along me 'ammstrings and under me buttocks!!!!!!!!

Am not as fit as i'd like!!!!!!!

So slowly a 'ad ter drop the pace... Down ter 78cad/ 21mph!!!!! (all top gear).

Then down ter New Brighton... A was 19/ 20mph and a cadence of 70 terrrr 75!!!!!!!

Then turn around again and BANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    Wind in face jobbie again!!!!!!!

    12 ter 14.5mph.... 68cad fighting the wind!!!!!

As a got further along on a VERY exposed area it was evil out there.... Must 'ave been a 30mph 'ead wind.... A was in the lowest gear ave used in a long long time.... Cad 63 and down ter 8.5mph!!!!!!

    Man it was 'ard going!!!!!

A caught up another cylcist that looked like a keen cyclist.... Yer know member of a club type!!!!!

    On 'is lighter racing bike!!!!!

So a was 'appy as it shows I am fit and strong!!!!!

But nowhere near enough for Rio 2016!!!!!!!

My total time for the 12.91miles ride - 51.23!!!!!!!

Not bad but Wiggo would do it in 'alf the time!!!!!!!!!!

A miles off the pace of fitness and strength!!!!!!!!!!

Am EXACTLY the same 'eight as Wiggo - 6' 3".... But am 105kg compared to 'is 77kg!!!!!!!

'e put down winning the TourDeFrance due to losing 7 or 8kgs!!!!!!!!

    My two questions for Wiggo:

What is 'is inside leg measurement??????

Am a 34" and just curious being the same 'eight.. Are me legs the same length???

'is style of riding is different to the other pros.... 'e 'as long thin legs.... Suprising as yer expect strong muscular legs for a tour cycle pro.... But where 'e gets 'is speed is spinning those legs at a 'igh cadence all day long!!!!!!

'e make sit look easy with 'is effortless style!!!!!!!

Which brings me ter me second question:

What is a good steady cadence in top gear???????

    A NEED answers CLP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quick - anyone involved with 'Maestro' at the BBC - sign Simon up for the next series so that he can experience real life conducting!

    Yippee for Amelia!!! Good choice!

  • Comment number 88.

Just caught Amelia's mensh and especially having been the only person to have spotted something from the Simon and Garfunkel song, which I have forgotten what Simon said it was during my dash in from the car!

Thanks a lot Jilly and I too am thinking of when I saw Squeeze in the mid-seventies for the first and sadly, only time live.

  • Comment number 94.

#85 Bingo, you keep trying son and Rio could be all yours!!

Well done for Sunny Side Up Sal, Amelia and Ponyclubmum. I have to confess to only hearing Sal's menshe due to fashion shopping for my girlie dog poppet's winter coat. Ended up buying her a very practical coat just the same as Wee Jimmy's only much larger.

Just about to give them a try out with a walk round the park. Have nice evenings all. XX

  • Comment number 95.

Hello again - came back to say how much I enjoyed Squeeze this evening. Brought back lots of memories of university - especially 'Take Me I'm Yours' which sounded fab tonight.

Looking forward to CiN - wondering who I might speak to on the phone that day.....

  • Comment number 96.

Just blogging to say just heard on the local news Bradley Wiggans has been knocked off his cycle tonight while out on a training ride!!!

It's relatively fresh news but there's reports he has a few possible broken ribs and brusing but isn't seriously injured!!!!!

The reports are a car pulled out of a filling station into his path!!!!!

I can't tell you the bl**** idiots I meet on the roads who simply know your there but just don't care.

I've had a female bus driver look right at me as I was approaching a junction.... Then as i'm a cyclist she just pulled out. I would have gone under the back wheels if I had not braked and swerved left as the bus came across me.

I've had an idiot in a van waiting to pull out at a junction rev his engine when I got right by him to scare me and then he grinned as i've gone past him!!!!!!!

I've had a taxi, driven by a man late at night, overtake me on a corner of a junction as I went around the junction fast at 20mph. Instead of staying behind me he raced me around me inches from me, cutting me up and forcing me to brake!!!!

He did this knowing I was there, on purpose!!!!!

One of these days I will drag one of these idiots out of their cars.

I don't use my 44tonne truck as a weapon against their 1 tonne car.... So why do they use their cars as a weapon against cyclists!!!!!!!

    Cowards!!!!!!!!

Just 3 recent incidents that come to mind.... I get something nearly daily when I cycle on the road!!!!

Sorry for a rant but I fully understand how Wiggo's accident has happened tonight.... It's not a case of I didn't see him.

From my experience they look at you and can't be bothered stopping for a cyclist!!!!!!!

    People just don't care!!!!!

    RANT OVER!

  • Comment number 97.

Bingo - rant away, I'm completely with you on this one. I've had lots of people drive far far too close to me on my bike. Last year someone drove so close to me that I gashed my shin badly as I dived off my bike onto the verge to avoid being hit. I cycle a lot on country roads and I hate the way that some drivers behind me can see a car coming the other way but think they can just 'nip' past me quickly and swerve in just in time. Grrrrr.

    Hope Wiggo is OK.

  • Comment number 98.

Oh dear, sorry to hear about Wiggo on his bike and of other experiences for bikers too. Mr W's cousin travels to work each day on his bike and tells us of the hairy experiences he has. Not good at all.

Night night everyone. Tomorrow is another day and one sleep closer.........................

  • Comment number 99.

Mandy as well as PCM got a mention for Signed Sealed Delivered, very good choice. And Sal well done for that lovely AWB song albeit now I cant stop singing it.

*giggles* I loved my mention, thank you Simon. It was slightly freaky, I was listening to The Essential Paul Simon driving to work and the second song on the album is Loves Me Like a Rock, hence it being my first choice today. Lovely to read your comments too, thank you, makes it more special to have folk to share it with!

Just home now, this evening has been mainly taking dog to vet - eye infection much better and some hideous supermarket shopping - I hate shopping except the online variety and I live too much in the middle of nowhere for anyone to delivery food type stuff.

Sorry to read about Bradley’s incident - just hope he is ok. I almost hit a human last night. Country road, no street lights, 60 mph speed limit, I was doing less than that, couple dressed in dark clothing run across the road in front of me, I almost didn’t see them but did and slowed down in time, horribly scary.

I tend to annoy other drivers about being ultra cautious with cyclists but tough is my attitude, I will sit and wait as long as necessary before overtaking. We spend so long behind tractors here anyway!

Squeeze were fantastic this evening. I LOVE the idea of selling CDs of the gig after the show. Even when I’ve seen a band lots every gig is special and unique and it would fantastic to have a proper recording of it.

    Shona - eek!
