No gloom here

Simon Mayo|09:16 UK time, Monday, 29 October 2012

Half term finished (in as much as it existed at all) and the dank and cold weekend done for. More geocaching was required of course (see last week) and our best find was a wonderful small silver capsule operated by a pulley system half way up a tree. Very clever and a round of applause for its creator. We celebrated by eating chips-Matt would have been so proud. There isn't much you can do in the pouring October rain to raise a smile but this was certainly one of them. More soon.

The other main occupation was reading the new Ian Rankin novel 'Standing In Another Man's Grave' which is another Rebus novel and the next bookclub choice. It really is terrific and well worth you looking at the free sample available here. Fans of Rebus won't need too much persuading of course but I'd forgotten what it is like to get half way through a book and feel as though you've smoked 60 cigarettes and drunk the best part of a bottle of whisky. Great detective, bad health choices. And the A9 sounds like a road worth avoiding.

Today we welcome comedian Roy Walker to drivetime. He won New Faces in 1977 and went on to feature regularly in The Comedians and then hosted Catchphrase. There's a 40th anniversary Comedians dvd around which was recorded at the Blackpool Grand Theatre last year and Roy will tell all tonight.

And oldies for the DARK please. The hour has been lost and drivetime is a show in darkness again. Allow us to light your path home (I can't believe I wrote that).

Have an enlightened and stimulating Monday. See you after 5

Happy Birthday Mandy!!!! And thanks for all the birthday wishes. Love the 'blog twins' comment, Molly - although I reluctantly have to admit I'm a few years ahead of Mandy...

It's traditional at work that the birthday girl or boy has to provide cakes for everyone, so I spent a bit of time over the weekend baking. Mr B asked me to tell everyone that the chocolate one was a disaster and they probably won't like it... unfortunately (for him) not many people have believed me so far. There may be a slice or two left for me to take home to him if he's lucky...

Hi to perfect_circle - nice to see you! Hope you're enjoying your half term.

No gloom here too... I think gloom the incorrect word but much much sadness over the weekend as I lost my little friend of 13 years!!!!!

Sadly we had to have our cat put to sleep after a few months of kidney troubles!!!!!!!

A VERY difficult decision of when to put have your pet put to sleep but neverless a very peaceful and calm way to go!!!!!!!!

Watched my little friend slip away.... So fast, so peaceful.... Gets me thinking why us humans have to go on in pain and suffer for so long after our minds or bodies have long left us when we get old!!!!!

NEVER did my little friend break my heart, play selfish evil games with my feelings, lie to me or just use me for money!!!!!!!

I thank god that on this wonderful beautiful world yet often cold and heartless world.... If you know how to.... You can enjoy the unconditional love and friendship that these animals ALWAYS give you if you give them just a little of your time!!!!!!!!!!

    R.I.P to Tom xxx

  • Comment number 63.

For any who think i'm silly or stupid.... A grown man upset over just a cat!!!!!

I'm just happy that I have a good enough heart to understand what a heart is for and how to use it.... And the same with animals ;-)))

For any who've never had a proper pet... My advice get one you they really do bring so much for so little in this modern materialistic world!!!!!!

    Happy Birthday to Mandy too!!

I usually find when there is a clutch of birthdays around the same date it is 9 months on from a significant date...like Valentines (daughter #2) NY eve (nephew #1).....

  • Comment number 66.

#62 ah that is a shame - yes, RIP Tom :-/

RE pets lots and lots of people around us have dogs - we live at the foot of Shotover Park in Oxford - and the thing that puts me off having a dog is the picking up of the poo. Sadly not all of our neighbours are enlightened in the modern thinking that it is polite and neighbourly to do so.

    Rant over.

    *puts away soap box*

Walking past a front garden the other day I was aware that a Tom cat had recently made his 'mark' as t'were....no doubt cats get together and complain about how we smell too!

I had a 'blonde' moment this morning (getting more and more frequent) when I saw a squirrel leaping James Bond stylee, (nut in mouth through the tree over my head) - how do the animals cope with this hour change over the weekend....

    DOH!!!

They don't 'cope', they just carry on as normal, with the sun telling them when to get up and when to get tucked in, rather than an adjusted alarm clock.

Enjoy the show peeps and for those with B'days hope you have a lovely night in/out (shake it all about)

  • Comment number 67.

Sorry to hear about your cat, Bingo. It's always very hard to lose a pet - they are just as much a member of the family as any humans. And a dog or cat will give you unconditional love, no matter how bad a day you're having.

#66 absolutely agree, Suzieee - it's people like that who give us dog owners a bad name. Clearing up after a dog is really no worse than changing a baby's nappy - often a lot less yucky in fact!

Update on the cake - it's all gone. Mr B is going to be disappointed...

    ~X~

  • Comment number 68.

Oh Bingo - the lump in my throat at reading your post ..........

As you say. a little care and attention from us and the animals in our care give us so much more. As my Mr has asthma, we have been advised by doctors not to have any more pets - I know you can get dogs which don't moult, but what if they still affected his breathing and we had to part company with it, through no fault of it's own. That would be awful.

Also, I cannot exercise a dog as it deserves anymore so we have resigned ourselves to no more dogs or cats - the pets we had in the past gave us great love and we wouldn't have been without them but it would be selfish to get animals that we couldn't look after properly.

Thank goodness you were brave enough to see that your beloved Tom was suffering and took the best action you could for him. Hugs coming your way>>>>>>>>

    Take care.

    JW

  • Comment number 69.

#62 Bingo, so sorry to see your news. It's awful to loose a pet, they are very much part of the family. At least he didn't suffer for very long. More hugs coming from me too x

  • Comment number 70.

Bingo, I don't think any of us here think you are silly at getting upset about the loss of your dear cat. I had a beautiful brown Burmese cat who I had to take to the vet at the grand old age of 18 years old. She was in a lot of pain and I knew that she was suffering. It was one of the hardest things that I have ever done. I even wrote everything down for the vet as I couldn't speak, I was so upset.

    Sending you more hugs .......x

  • Comment number 73.

Bingo - sympathies from this cat, too. You've done the only thing you could. We've all been there and it isn't a pleasant experience, but neither are the alternatives.

  • Comment number 74.

#62 Bingo - I am so sorry to hear about your cat. It's heartbreaking to lose a much loved pet (I've been there myself a few times). And so many people are completely unsympathetic. They're the ones with no soul!!

    Evening all,

Been listening to the radio this afternoon - I have two questions:

Paloma Faith's cover version of "Never tear us apart". Why?

Gary Barlow's cover version of "Forever Autumn". Why?

    Fingets crossed for tonight's menshfest.

I heard a mensh for Amelia and was it Billie? For Dancing in the Dark? Congrats

  • Comment number 78.

Sorry, hubby not here and I need to rant.

My daughter's spelling list this week - phenomenom, co-ordinater, inconvenient, hypothermia, hypochondriac, identifiable, circumference, accidentally, revolutionary, insignificantly. Can anyone spot the problems? What a joke!

Not only have 2 of the words been spelt wrong but she is expected, as a 10 year old, to find a word to rhyme with each of these words - I'm not sure I could do that without using the internet!

And this is her preparation for high school next year.

Note to self. Must find primary school where teachers can spell and organis/ze appropriate work before son reaches this class!

    Disgraceful!

    Rant over. Sorry again.

  • Comment number 79.

#76 Thanks, John. It was indeed my first mention and I am a bit chuffed! I got up really early on the first day of my Half Term holiday to tune choose, and I was glad it was an easy topic today!!

Well done perfect circle on your first mention - pleased to share it with you!

And a lovely mention on your birthday Deebee (and Sir C for just being Sir C).

Lilac Blue - I’m not at all jealous, honest! Hope you are having a fantastic time. Have some pizza for me please!

Erica - I cant believe a teacher would think those words (mis-spelled or otherwise) are appropriate for that age group and I would never find rhyming words. And don’t apologies, your anger is quite understandable!

    Evening All -

Late to the blog but heard all the show and the menshes - Congrats. & Welldones to Amelia, myself (Thankyou Simon) and esp. to PerfectCircle (Special 1st. Mensh) for Bruce. And to Birthday Girl Deebee & Sir C for Vangelis. JBG - I, too, think of it as a Seasonal Song!

Were there no "talking texts" or did I have (another) senior moment?

#83 Why thank you, amelia. If I can share my pongy dog with you, I can certainly share a mention ;-P...

Thanks, Billie! And I believe I just heard another mention for you!!

  • Comment number 88.

    Goodness! A second mensh!

What a brilliant day for blog menshes!

Congratulations Billie x 2, amelia, perfect_circle, Deebee & Sir Cumfy!

and thank you, Simon, for mine, for the Walker Brothers.

Erica, I would be spitting feathers too over that mis-spelt list. As John and Amelia say, hardly appropriate words for a 10 year old.

Did I mention that perfect_circle is spending her holidays with me? Did I mention that I've never had a double mention? *feeds her dinner to the smelly dog who is also holidaying with me*

    Pleased for you really!

#91 - thanks so much. I have the cheesiest grin EVER on my face!! I know how addictive it is, as amelia is my best friend ;-). She loves choosing songs, and now I totally get why it's so lovely when they are played.

#92. Sorry, amelia!! Please don't feed my lovely dinner to the dog! It's smelling delicious!

I'm intrigued - Are Amelia & PerfectCircle in the same kitchen on 2 different 'puters?

  • Comment number 99.

Yes we are - and because I am a nice person I'm going to let her try for the 100 too since her luck seems to be in today ....

#98 Amelia and I are indeed in the same kitchen, and she's on her Mac, whilst I'm on my ancient laptop. We are accompanied by my smelly dog. :-).
