Oh Simon, I do sympathise with your current situation. We had the builders in for most of last year and the noise and mess intrusion takes quite a while to get used to. Then when they go, however, they are strangely missed. We have a project going on outside at the moment so not so bad this time, although we have to watch where we park the cars!



Looking forward to hearing Dawn French again. Apparently, they are filming another of their 'Famous Five' spoofs, an anniversary edition!

So whilst some parts of the UK still can't get a decent phone signal, let a lone data signal, people with certain fruity phones on a select network in a few cities will be able to get a super duper new faster network.



10 years ago it was pretty neat to be able to send a text message. Nowadays people seem to have an overwhelming desire to be able to watch video and broadcast where they are and what they've had for lunch and what the person sitting opposite them on the train is reading. At all times.



Don't get me wrong, I think the fact that I can tweet or post on Facebook or look something up on the internet wherever I am (except for the aforementioned areas with poor/no network coverage) is fantastic, but I can't think of anything I need to know even quicker than I do now.

One of the big selling points of 4G is that it will allow streaming of high quality video on the move. What scares me about this is that there's a good proportion of the population who will do this inappropriately.



I see lots of people driving and texting, and a recent survey by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (of which I'm a member) found that around 8% of drivers admit to using smartphones whilst driving:

I'm sure there are a lot more who didn't admit to it.



I've seen people driving and reading a book. I've seen them using portable DVD players on their dashboards. If you start giving people the opportunity to watch TV, movies and sports events on their phones whilst on the go my fear is that a considerable number of people will do so whilst they are driving, particularly young people, because when we are young we think we know everything and can do everything. That spells disaster, not only for them, but for anyone else they encounter whilst they are behind the wheel.



Add to that the people who will be too wrapped up in what they're watching when crossing the road, or simply not looking where they are going...



I'm aware I'll sound like a right old Luddite, but I can assure you I'm not. My work deals with implementing new technologies, and I'm all for technological advances - I just wonder if in this case people have thought of the potential consequences.

#34 Sir Cumf - Good post. I'm still shocked when I drive along the motorway and see people tapping away on their sat nav or phone or ipad. It's so distracting and dangerous to take your eyes off the road for even more more than just a second. And cars these days seem to have even more screens built into them, which are not always in the natural field of vision for keeping your eyes on the road. Surely the latest research should be used to ban them?



Cars aside, I welcome all the latest phone developments. I'm not a tech-junkie, and don't have to have the latest model, but I can't imagine life without instant access to all those things we "need".

How did they predict this over 40 years ago?

From Simon’s bit yesterday – the A9 is a fine road – majestic, magnificent scenery and it takes you to Inverness which can only be a good thing. It is also hugely infuriating – most of it isn’t dual carriageway. I spent many many Sunday evenings in winter driving home to Edinburgh in snow storms crawling along in the tyre tracks of the car in front – much fun.



Mandy – you need a new phone I would imagine unless your phone is very new



Sir C – folk who use their phones while driving make me so mad – I am always tempted to pomp at them which probably wouldn't be helpful. As for watching video while driving, complete madness. Not least because the car is obviously the best place for radio listening.



As I said before I struggle to get a phone signal at home and my broadband is flaky and temperamental. I can’t imagine why I would want high speed video when out and about, I’m happy if I can text, tweet and look stuff up but as John said I can’t imagine not being able to do that now.

My 'toy town' phone can send texts and receive calls and has a radio in it - no camera, internet access etc etc and I love it. My lap top is great when I am at home and I'm sure I can wait til I get there before I look something up - if I am out I want to enjoy that experience. I understand that people use their phones as part of their business, but personally I don't need it.



No weight loss this week but no gain either, so that's ok - onward and downward!

Looks like I'm not the only with with some kind of building hassle!



I have been waiting for 4 months for the Council to sort out the bathroom. On 2 occasions: they came, they looked, they went and did nothing. The polythene sheet is still there to minimise leaks to the flat below!



I am now convinced they are making any excuse not to do the job. The last time they came was yesterday, but the job has since been rearranged!





On a different tack. Nice title for the blog. I'm learning French at the moment and when Messrs Mayo & Kermode were in Sheffield do the Film Review show, they were discussing the pronunciation of "Vague" as in Nouvelle Vague (I think it was posted in spelt vag.



Needless to say I ended up heckling. Sorry Messrs Mayo & Kermode!

Now that the mensh chasing has died down a bit, I have a question that I am interested in knowing the answer to. I reckon it would be a good Homework sucks question but Hubby thinks the Beeb might think I'm being too nosey about where the tax payers money is being spent. Honestly, I am just interested in knowing.



It came about yesterday morning when I was listening to CE and trying to find the motivation to get out of bed. Chris happened to mention that the breakfast team had ended up with the Racing Post in their pile of newspapers and while he was sure it belonged to 5L he was gonna flick thro' it. This got me thinking. How many copies of newspaper does the beeb get thro' in one day? Does Chris and Vassos have a set each or does Vassos get the back pages once Chris has finished wi' the front bits? Do the breakfast telly team have a set for the researches to go thro' and then another set for Bill and co. to show on't telly?



So simply put...How newspapers does the Beeb have delivered, across its various networks, everyday?



I think it would be fascinating to know.

The issue with them doing their business cats normally just do it descreetly in the garden or in a litter tray.... Dogs more of a 'andful!!!!!!

'ad an incidnetation last week..... A was out cycling near the sea.... There's the lovely sea front path/ cycle path!!!!

But on one section it splits... The lower footpath only.... The top cycle path only and the cycle path very narrow!!!!!!!

If ever a carry on on the lower path people moan at me/ make remarks this is not a cycle path a should be up there!!!!!!

Now a always cycle on the upper cycle only path.... Only problem.... Despite clear signs people walk on it!!!!!

Most are good.... But a came across two ladies walking their dogs who would not move aside.... So the only way to pass was afte rlsoing all me speed and momentum..... Go around them on the grass!!!!!!

A didn't say a word as am not one to cause confrontation..... So around a went!!!!!!!

But ter add insult ter injury.... As a went on the grass a picked up dog stuff on me front wheel!!!!!!!!!!!! :-((((((((((((((

A know dogs are more 'uman like than cats... The classic farmers sheep dog springs ter mind (aswell as around a field gahtering sheep).... The one thing ave noticed is black and white dogs and cats are more friendly.... More inteligent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



I've seen black and white sheep dogs so intelligent with their farmer!!!!!!!

And over the years we've 'ad many cats since I was a small child.... always 'ad two cats of different ages!!!!!!

There's a reason for everthing in life and it's no coincidence Sylvester the cat and Tom from Tom & Jerry was black and white and the Felix advert cat!!!!!!!!

The black and white's are more mischevious and intelligent!!!!!!!!!!

#61 Sal, I never did find out hat the previous fungi picture was and accepted what you called it as nobody else came up with another name. I have no idea what the white one is but a friend said it looked like a ballerina without a body as it's like sticky-out ballet dress and skinny legs!

Fabulous photos Florence - were you using your "proper camera" you have some wonderful background blur in particular on the second photo? I can never manage it with my wee camera only the big one that I generally cant be bothered carrying when walking the dog.

Have just returned after a wonderful dog walk through the meadows around here. It has certainly been a good autumn for fungi.



Sal/Flo the last picture (white shelf-like fungus on the side of the tree) is commonly known as 'chicken of the woods' (latin name: laetiporous). It is edible and according to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall tastes like chicken when cooked, although I have never been brave enough to try it!!



Having a little pony means that we get quite a good supply of field mushrooms twice a year. One of my happiest memories is going out in the early hours with my Dad, collecting mushrooms and coming home to make a delicious simple soup with warm bread for breakfast.

Some of them sound like complaints you really should be discussing with your GP Flo.

Yes, I've had chicken in the woods, or of the woods, quite nice.



I have a friend who will literally eat anything free. She puts the fungi in a plastic bag and ties it to kill off any creepies living within, then its in the pot!

My favourite free woodland fayre has to be sweet chestnuts. There were lots growing where I used to live as a child. Sadly, not many around where I live now.

Sal and Molly Coddle, I don't even like mushrooms, but I love picking them and peeling and slicing through them, so there's no way I'd be eating fungus growing on the trunk of a tree... but sweet chestnuts, yes please! Reminds me of when I was growing up and my dad would put them in the fire, back in the days when we also occasionally toasted crumpets or made toast on the fire... much tastier than in a toaster!

#80 Molly Coddle, it looks very much like it and perhaps the older it is, the more it rises up until it's horizontal. I've been looking at Sal's link and can't believe how many there are.



I'm watching Autumnwatch at the moment and they are showing 15,600 pink-footed geese landing over in Fife and they are truly beautiful. Oh my goodness the sight of thousands taking off together is spectacular - 10,000 they think taking off together and they sound gorgeous!
