We used to go 'guising as children in the estate where we were known and only to each other's houses. A party piece had to be done in order to receive a sweet and we did have a lot of fun.



Some people got the word 'guising confused with Guy and "Penny for the Guy" could be heard by youngsters in the late 70's in a real old celebration mix up.

Last year I stocked up on 'treat sized' goodies and no-one came to trick or treat us, so Mr T had to eat them! This year I haven't bothered (Mr T is on a diet) so no doubt we'll have lots of visitations!!

Good morning everyone



I have already typed this and was about to post when AOL suddenly went off...



Simon, I grew up in a small village in the West Country, with only about 35 children in our primary school and Halloween wasn't celebrated like it is now... it's far too commercial these days. My children dressed up and went around with their friends performing their party pieces and I always made toffee apples, crispie cakes sweets etc for the guisers who came around.



Every year we had a bonfire and fireworks on the village common that the children, helped by adults, went around the village collecting wood and anything else that would burn and villagers would also take unwanted wood etc and gradually it would grow huge and the Friday or Saturday night nearest the 5th, it would be lit at 7pm by youngsters with their 'lit torches' which were empty baked bean cans attached to a long pole and stuffed with paraffin rag.

I don't really go with the trick or treating thing, too American for me, and I've never thought begging door to door was a good thing. I remember 'penny for the guy' when I was little and bobbing for apples and home made treacle toffee (project for this weekend) and an apostrophe in Hallowe'en which has now disappeared, and my primary school had a Hallowe'en fancy dress party which was general fancy dress, not just ghoulish - I won a prize for being a belly dancer one year in a pink chiffony number with veil and elasticated harem pants made by my mum!



Well, I could sit here reminiscing all day but I must get on. Will try and get back later.

*coughs* I've just read the blog - shame on me for not doing that first. So keen was I to tune choose on one of the rare occasions I can, that I was watching for the theme on Twitter, where I believe it only talked about moons and werewolves... so I needed a couple of ghost choices.



On the subject of Hallowe'en, I grew up in Northern Ireland, so it was a bigger deal for us than 5th November (though I do remember Penny for the Guy when I was really young). Fireworks were banned for many years because of the "Troubles" - what an odd term for the shennigans that went on for many years...



So my main memories were of family parties for Hallowe'en. We ducked for apples and tried to bite apples on a string. And my mum risked our lives by putting a sixpence in an apple pie. No going round the doors looking for sweets, as it was too dangerous.

I am a fan because I love all things spooky. I did used to dress up and go trick or treating when I was little, although it was a less lavish affair back then. I always had a carved pumpkin, and we did stuff like apple bobbing. I do recall 'penny for the guy' too, my cousin and I would stuff some old clothes, and make a papier mâché head for the guy, and then sit with it at the front gate harassing hapless passers by. Them were the days!

Our sweets are ready by the door, the pumpkin was carved at the weekend (soup made, natch) - and although it's looking a bit flaccid, like it's taken it's teeth out already (central heating) I think it'll do the trick in the window tonight as a lure for all the little kiddies on our estate Bouhahahaha

I have a scream mask and black cloak ready, but have been told it's too scary!!

It was an amazing huge orange moon last night as it rose - hope it's as good tonight, looked just like a pumpkin (or swede depending on your point of view/class/greengrocer)

Mr e turned down a free MUSE ticket on Saturday night in London, to go with me and daughter #2 (14yrs a week on Saturday) to see Gaz Coombes, he of Supergrass. T'was a very small room and Boy was that LOUD, yes, I should have not stood at the front, by the left hand speaker - ears still ringing....



We never had a pumpkin, but apple bobbing yes, - and penny for the guy was quite a regular plea on our local street when Guy Fawkes was approaching. Of course that's in the days when kids could buy fireworks and attach them to cat's tails - so perhaps having no penny for the guy is a good thing.

We never celebrated Hallowe'en when I was a child. Loved the more traditional Guy Fawkes night though - my Dad would let off a few fireworks in the garden, then we'd go to an organised display where there would be tomato soup and the best jacket potatoes I have ever eaten!

I need to go and buy some treats for tonight's visitors - I daren't buy them before as I have zero willpower and they'd all be eaten. My young(ish) visitors last year were polite enough, but frankly some of them hadn't made much of an effort!



When we were kiddies we went 'guising' - which I think is a Scottish tradition. You had to sing a song (or recite a poem etc) before getting sweets. I also remember doing 'penny for the guy' with Brownies in the 70s & early 80s but I haven't seen it for many a year.

School holidays here in Wigan. So far cherub has enjoyed 2 trips to the cinema and a fancy dress disco, im not sure I can keep up this level of entertainment though. Headache looms.



We carved our pumpkin at weekend and its already started looking sorry for itself. Was a darn sight easier than the sweed I remember carving at cherubs age. Have also made a lovely pumpkin/carrot soup. (has to be done!).



Having a propper halloween of a day ~ my tumble dryer seems posessed. Its new to me (sisters old one) and have only started using it today. Basicly its not happy with the position Ive put it in (ie on an extention). Have managed to trip the switch twice already so have now given up.

Oh appliances, why have you forsaken me??



Not amused by the George Lucus/Disney news. Think im gonna have to lock myself in a vault with Star Wars 4, 5 & 6 to preserve my sanity !

#52 Ah yes, Dad in the garden letting off a box of 'Standard' fireworks (other brands are available etc etc) is a memory for me too, and it had to be ON the NIGHT of 5th, not a day afore or aft.

We've been hearing fireworks for days now, poor cats and dogs!

Local firework displays - usually just school ones where I grew up, but here in Oxf we have a huge one with fair etc in a large park that I have been to in the past.

However, since I moved to a new area, it turns out that our local parish council put one on in the field at the top of our road and it really is as good as any I've seen.

We always have friends over to see it, then back to ours for some food and drink! Just happens to be daughter #2's birthday so 'hey presto' instant party!

I've been out with binoculars on a clear night and you really can actually see craters and shadows on the moon, it makes you realise we are just on a lump of rock twirling through space..in fact makes me feel giddy.

We never 'celebrated' hallowe'en when we were children but bonfire night was a time for the village to get together. We also had fireworks in the back garden - catherine wheels that didn't go round and had to be prodded with a long stick, rockets in milk bottles sunk in the ground and as you say, Deebee, the best jacket potatoes ever.



We also made a guy and took it round and about in an old pushchair, collecting the odd penny here and there, which we spent on black jacks to make our teeth and tongue go black, fruit salads and liquorice sticks.

Like the other Scots here I went guising as a child. Dressing up, doing a party piece (must have been reciting poetry as I can’t sing, dance or act) around neighbours who knew us.



I hate the notion of “trick or treat” something really menacing about it.



I’m not especially creative, nor were my parents so I had some dreadful costumes. I remember a dice once and trying to dye something with the juice from a jar of beetroot!



Don’t think we ever did penny for the guy. Organised displays in the grounds of the local mental hospital (really) and dad setting off fireworks in the garden. Like Deebee I associate it with soup too.



Halloween is a huge thing here in Ireland – as much for grown ups as children – not my thing at all – never liked dressing up even as a child.



In my village they have a “torch-light parade”. Health & safety is less of a thing here and small children carry round blazing torches – it is quite terrifying and even after 6 years here I can’t believe what I am seeing each year.



Muse – they are a band I would expect to like but they just don’t do it for me.

#47 Parsley - Hi yes more Level 42 here please! I cannot recall 'Trick or Treat' at all in my childhood. It seems all came out of American films such as ET. I enjoyed taking part when I lived in Wheelton as there was only one family of children came round, really well dressed up and lovely, well-supervised and collected for a well-known local charity with an official tin. So a good donation in the box & some sweeties all round.



As part of the economy drive - here in the office where I stamp bits of paper we have painted scary faces on tangerines with black felt pen - very effective!



Here's a scary joke - I used to be a Warewolf but I'm all right nowwwwwwoooooooH!

I don't remember guising when I was a nipper. We moved away from Scotland (boo!) when I was only about 8 years old, so maybe I never really got the chance. And of course it wasn't done down here.



I do remember plenty of bobbing for apples - Golden Delicious (other variants are available) were frequently used cos they were easy to get your teeth through the skin. And a toffee apple afterwards.



Where I live now, although not far from a main road and 'civilisation', is a quiet, dark lane with a row of only 10 houses. No street lights, and the other side of the road is a copse in which you can hear regular rustling coming from the darkness as the deer, rabbits, badgers, foxes, owls and other nighttime creatures move about.



Oddly we don't tend to get trick or treaters....
