One last hurrah

Simon Mayo|08:55 UK time, Monday, 10 September 2012

Well. Through bleary eyes it might be that the typing will be more erratic and error-strewn than normal, but I'll give it a go. It was a long old day but Radio 2 in Hyde Park was a mighty day of sweaty, swaying, cheering, yelling, queuing, happy music fans. It might be that you were watching the Paralympics closing ceremony and roaring along with Coldplay et al, but Jo Whiley and I were in the royal park along with 30,000 + fans for the 'festival in a day' that we put on every year. I'd missed all the others so it was my first and we had a great time. From Mick Hucknall (who got away with singing no Simply Red hits by playing lots of everybody else's) to Tom Jones (who just has so many hits to chose from but when he did Delilah I thought the park would tremble) via Jessie J (who had the noisiest fans by some way), it really was a good end to the summer. Which exactly how it feels now that the september spiders have taken over...

But just one more last hurrah...oldies for the PARADE OF THE OLYMPIANS AND PARALYMPIANS which wanders through London this afternoon. The flag gets one final wave. It got a good flourish at the Last Night of the Proms so lets do it one more time. Parade songs please. The LNOFTP was another tub-thumping success and when the Olympian rowers came on for Rule Britannia it took the roof off. But enough of the social whirl.

To Monday's show and the return of the Radio 2 book club with The Yellow Birds by debut novelist Kevin Powers. He's a veteran of the second gulf war and the book is set during the conflict in Iraq. But this is no Andy McNab style romp but a poetic story of friendship and loss. Read some of Kevin's book here and hear him from 6.

Have a straight-forward and hassle free Monday. See you after 5.

Andy Murray tonight in the final, Rory McIlroy looks to be having a personal parade and likely to win the US Tour finale, Bradley Wiggins on his celebratory tour of Britain (record crowds in Ipswich yesterday for "le grand départ". And the Ryder Cup to come in a couple of weeks or so as well.

    Hi Simon and everyone

I heard you and Jo welcome everyone to Hyde Park as I had arrived back from refereeing and competing at a kickboxing competition, I competed in the Ladies Veterans category (only one lady in category) I lost 16 - 15 but should have beat her as I was 4 up at one point. In the weight category where most were in early 20's I lost 5 - 4 after being 4 - 1 down. I got a silver medal though for the veterans category.

Greetings Mayo Man & ALL Bloggies...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

Mayo Man aka as Sir Terry put it yesterdee... 'is Cherry On The Cake'.... Ter me a would more describe yersen as a very essential ingredient.... Especially when it comes ter The Drivetime Gig.... The Self-Raising Flour Of Radio - As ou do raise us up with your fine fine show - Yes sadly The Olympic Gig bids farewell today with The Parade Of GB Olympians that made us so so so proud ter be British again and certainly for me woke me up to my potential potential and inspired me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not over yer though for our wonderful year of sport!!!!!!

This very day it is the UK's version of The Tour deFrance aka The Cycle Tour Of Great Britain.... Bradley Wiggans can not be at the parade in London a sright now 'e is powering 'is way on stage 2 from Nottingham over the Derbyshire 'ills and down through Cheshire finishing at Knowsley Merseyside with 100 other of the world's top cyclists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then Thursday the best female golfers in the world desend on the links course at Royal Liverpool aka 'oylake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A will be at both events for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    PS Me latest update:

DAY 28 - Bingo Star's Quest Ter Become An Olympic Track Cyclist Champion By 2016:

So the games 'ave ended and this is when most of us start ter forget the moments of inspiration that we all witnessed from these amazing 2012 games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyday i'm cycling both to and from work clocking up 120kms per week presently... All an excellent start to getting super fit and super strong in the legs and The MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A know presently it's easier with our pleasant weather.

Will a be able ter keep it up when it's freezing with 'orizontal rain????

A can remember jogging near the sea when a couldn't even see were a was going for gale force winds and rain in me face... Then when turning the wind was so strong a was running so fast with the wind pushing me a could barely keep on me feet!!!!!

That was the moment a join a gym ter jog indoors!!!!!!!

Similar a will do if the weather is too bad... And a think a cycle rolling road/ trainer will be excellent ter use under cover!!!!!!!!!!

As for now am getting stronger and more powerful. Approaching the 'ills am developing a technique were a breath 'arder than a need too on approach.... Cycle moderate to fast then a sa 'it the bottom of the 'ill.... Power VERY 'ard with the legs still breathing 'ard and up a go with ease!!!!!!!

Only problem nearly kills me lungs at the top... But a soon recover within 30seconds.... Me fitness is coming good!!!!!!!

Daily me times are tumbling.... Even me ride to work which was me achilles 'eel as it is more uphill and usually with most of it inter a 'eadwind!!!!!!

Am getting more powerful against the wind.... A was doing 30 minutes some days... But now down ter 24... Slashing me times:

    To Work: 02/09 26min45sec; 3rd 26.15; 4th 25.51; 5th 25.59; 6th 26.22 (strong 'eadwind); 8th 24.22; 9th 24.18. Setting new fastest times daily ;-))))

    From Work: 02/09 22.02; 4th 22.07; 5th 22.00; 6th 21.35; 8th 22.23; 9th 21.04.

Only 28 days of the 1460 until Rio 2016.... If a keep this up who knows what stage a could be at in 2016.... All a know for sure... This time nobody or nothing can or will stop me.... With me motorsport it was money/ sponsorship.... With me golf ok a admit a failed in getting the swing totally correct... Although a was excellent at every other aspect of golf.... With me cycling a just don't know why a didn't wake up ter this when a used ter cycle alot 20 years ago!!!!!!!!!

Onwards and upwards.... 'ills or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Three word Monday....

    Tooth gone. Phew!!

I've gained two blind mice though!!

    Dont ask......

  • Comment number 39.

A few comments on the Hyde Park concert, which I may have to do in bits, as my work computer doesn't seem to like long posts.

We arrived at about 1.30 and joined the queue in the scorching heat. Luckily we didn't have to wait too long before the gates were open and they started letting people through. I had jokingly tweeted Simon that I would be the one in the straw hat - at least I hope he didn't think I seriously expected him to pick me out... just as well, as there was somebody selling guess what - straw hats! Not as nice as my one, obviously...

    ;o)

  • Comment number 40.

    Anyway, the bands:

Mick Hucknall – disappointing that he didn’t do any of the Simply Red hits, but I’ve read somewhere that he’s not doing them any more so I shouldn't really have been surprised.

Katzenjammer – a mad, all-girl Norweigan band (wonder if Mo has heard of them?). One of them was quite scary – a sort of female Ozzy Osborne… Very original style, great harmonies and an enormous triangular instrument which my son told me was a bass ukulele.

Paloma Faith – great rapport with the audience, very strong vocally although I struggled to hear the words sometimes. One of the highlights of the show for me.

Rebecca Ferguson – nothing to write home about, but I love her Scouse accent!

Emelie Sandé – fantastic voice, dressed like a secretary. I’m afraid I find her songs a bit samey.

Average White Band – still sounding good!

  • Comment number 41.

Status Quo – brilliant – had 90% of the audience on their feet, even the youngsters. Another highlight. And whoever said they could only play three chords has clearly never seen them live…

The Band Perry – country style, very energetic – did a great version of Queen’s ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’!

Jessie J – very good, excellent rapport with the audience. Dressed in what looked for all the world like a piece of silver foil, which didn’t entirely succeed in covering her underwear… in fact at one point she had to apologise for a wardrobe malfunction… Loads of her younger fans at the front. Jo Whiley interviewed some of them, one said she had seen her 25 times! And she’s only been around for a couple of years – now that’s dedication…

  • Comment number 42.

    Afternoon

I was hopeful of a quiet day. It's not to be I'm afraid.... so a quick wave and I'm off. Hopefully catch up later.

Choon chase - a quick scan and my vote added to:

    Perfect Day - Lou Reed

Praise You - Fat Boy Slim

Blaze of Glory - Jon Bon Jovi

  • Comment number 43.

    And finally...

Tom Jones – did a few songs I didn’t know, probably from his new album. He also sang ‘Mocking Bird’ with Jessie J, which was very good. And as Simon said, ‘Delilah’ was a big crowd-pleaser. His set finished with a firework display - a fitting end!

All in all a great afternoon/evening. And Simon and Jo did a fine job hosting it. My only slight criticism would be that Simon had to keep putting his clipboard down on the stage to turn the page over as he had the mike in his other hand - why didn't they give them head mikes so they would have both hands free? Anyway I hope he gets to do it again next year, and maybe we can have a blog outing...

    ~X~

  • Comment number 44.

#38 Sorry Sal - I wasn't ignoring you, just trying to get the above down in my lunch hour. Hope the tooth extraction wasn't too painful. But only two blind mice? Humph - guess that's the recession for you...

    ;o)

  • Comment number 45.

I didn't think you were ignoring me Deebee :) I just poop in sometimes, with random stuff, I know!

Sounds like a great time at Hyde Park.

Tooth, had an abscess, which I have put up with for some time, it didn't show up on the last xray. Good riddance I say.

Wait till you see the mice on fb! They dont have their eyes open yet and were on the road alongside their less fortunate parents. I'll do my best for them, but am determined they dont become tame.

  • Comment number 46.

#45 Aww, poor little mites. I hope they survive.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 47.

They are are tucking in, so fingets crossed.

  • Comment number 48.

Your post of the concert Deebee brought it all flooding back. I really enjoyed watching it and I would agree with you about the scary lady and Jessie J's outfit.

Sal, ouch about your tooth ;( What a caring person you are to nurse and mother two wee mice. I look forward to seeing them later.

Feeling quite good about things today as I have managed to do a few jobs I have been putting to the bottom of the pile for over a week ;)

I also have Larry going round in my head..................Float on, Float on........

  • Comment number 49.

#41 Did "The Band Perry" open up by saying "We're the Band Perry and we play country music"? :-)

I'm seeing them in November in Camden at the Koko, rescheduled from the summer at the Shepherds Bush Empire. A "situation beyond their control" in relation to the new album - which I read as either "running late, record company not happy", or "record company don't like it, having to re-do bits" or "ticket sales not going well, need to be on sale longer" or "the support slot offered up on a big US tour offered up a much better opportunity to sell some more albums and clashed with the European tour or recording the new album and something had to give". I think they were supporting somebody big in the States around about the same time. Either way a far cry from "the show must go on"

20+ times seeing Jessie J? I would be in the nuthouse!

The Quo are very good live, everyone should see them once. I defy you not to nod your head. I saw them at Newmarket July course one evening after racing, and they played "Forty-five Hundred Times" and plenty of other proper oldies. Perfect!

  • Comment number 50.

#49 Clearly not a band known to Uncle Tony, Ken. When he introduced them last night, he read the name from a bit of paper in his hand. It made me giggle ;)

  • Comment number 51.

#49 Lady C would be forced to agree with you, Ken. She tolerates my fondness for them but makes the usual disdainful remarks about Status Quo whenever they're played, but last night she started to sing along to Caroline and was nodding her head and tapping her foot through most of their set.

I took her along to see them early in our "courting" days, and she was keen to point out that she was only going along for my benefit, and asked if I would be terribly disappointed if she wasn't "joining in" too much... She ended up on her feet, singing along to everything she knew.

  • Comment number 52.

It sounds like you had a wonderful time, Deebee.

Look after those little mice, Sal - how lucky were they to find you?!

    JW

  • Comment number 53.

#49 LOL! Yes, I believe they did say something like that. Hope you enjoy them in November - I think you will.

#51 Was that the moment you realised that she was the one...?

#53 lol! If an overlap of musical tastes was a determining factor we'd never have married!

THE SCAFFOLD - Thank U Very Much

  • Comment number 56.

Been a bit busy today, so haven't had time to contribute until now.

Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes for my father from yesterday. It wasn't a major issue, just precautionary. It's quite pleasant going for this sort of thing at the weekend - the place is quiet and you can park near the main entrance which is very useful with an older visitor.

I would certainly have gone with the Floaters option for the obvious reason already noted by many. He'll never live that down, not with us, anyway.

Well done Jennie Wren... I just caught your first tune as I was getting out of my car, earlier! :o))

Hello Everyone and, of course, Simon the Festival Fun Guy, The Team and the Very Nice Young Man,

From previous blog - I'm just pooping by to say a very big thank you for playing my ARFO on Friday. Sorry I didn't get to say thank you sooner but things have been a tad busy the last few days. Elder boy is now safely ensconced in his uni accommodation and is partying like it's 1999! Younger boy and I are bereft :(

Sir Cumference, I'm so sorry for stealing your thunder m' Lovely. I didn't realise you'd been requesting it for a while. It's my fave Status Quo tune but not one you hear very often on the radio.

John B Good - we were in a steamy car too, probably for similar reasons to yourself. ARF kept us company on our long drive north and Radio 2 in Hyde Park kept us company on our way home yesterday.

    I hope everyone is well.

    Laters sweet p'taters,

Amelia, my heart has been racing too and I hope Andy hasn't burned himself out with those fiirst two brilliant sets! Since Janice Long started I have her on the internet and the tennis on the TV... multi-tasking I suppose and it could be a long night... 3.5 hours for three sets so I think I'll put on my jimjams which I've been sitting on for a while so they're nice and warm as I don't like putting on cold clothes!

So many near misses for Andy in this set. Regardless of anything it is a cracking match.

I'm giggling at your PJs. I love getting into a cold bed.

A little whisky seems appropriate at this time.

Mum has an odd collection of tops tonight.

Still here Amelia... a good start in the final set and I'm sending winning vibes to Andy and hope he can find the aggression he had when he won the Olympic gold medal.

I like a cold bedroom with windows open and never put the heating on, but I can't bear getting into a cold bed or putting on cold clothes in cold weather and if there isn't a nearby radiator on which to quickly warm my jeans or blouse, I put my hairdryer on and give the insides a warm blow for a minute and then put them on.

COME ON ANDY!!!! 2 games up so far!!!

    xx

Just as well there are only sheep to disturb the amount of shouting & whooping I am doing at the moment.

  • Comment number 74.

Oooohhhh just one game away and I hope he does it... even Janice Long is getting updates from me and she's sending him winning vibes!!

I'm still here to watch Andy Murray's interview and seemingly it's 76 years since a British player has won a Grand Slam.

Now I am off to bed... night night everyone xx

im still here its 76 years since a male won a slam i think virginia wade was the last british grand slam winner.he is the first person to win the gold medal at the olympics and win the us open in the same year.

  • Comment number 88.

Morning all. And what a fantastic one it is too! A Scottish - sorry, he won so British - Grand Slam winner. I was listening last night in bed until it was two sets up at which point I thought, hopefully that'll be good enough, and as by that time it was 11.40 I went to sleep. Thank goodness I didn't stay up to listen til the end, otherwise I'd have been in no fit state for work today.

I think it'll be my Saltire cufflinks to work today...

#63 Toots, no worries - I'd already fully endorsed your suggestion of it anyway

  • Comment number 90.

Good Morning Troopers and what troopers you are to have stayed up and watched Andy win the tennis! Hats off to you all!

(Flo, I meant the picture of Simon as James Bond)

What a lovely morning here. The sun is out but it is blinding.

Such a busy day ahead including an airport run tonight;( In-laws arriving tomorrow as well and the cupboards are bare.

Still, I hope to see you over the page;)

  • Comment number 91.

Morning Amelia... a strong coffee for you!!!!

It doesn't seem long since I went to bed after that brilliant win for Andy Murray! Vassos on Chris Evans' show stayed up to watch it too and has had about an hour's sleep!

  • Comment number 92.

#85... in my excitement early this morning I forgot to say it is the first time for 76 years that a MALE British tennis player won a Grand Slam, so I'd better put that right!

  • Comment number 93.

Thanks Flo! I did wonder how Vassos was coping this morning!

See you in a few hours over the page when I get to the office.

#90 Love the new moniker, Shona. Perhaps I should change mine to Enthusiastic Sir Cumference...

I'm assuming of course that regular is referring to your blogging frequency and not your general level of health...

  • Comment number 95.

#94 LOL Sir Cumfy! I do of course mean that I blog regularly ;)) And I think Enthusiastic Sir (and Lady) Cumference is a great moniker for you.
