Matters arising

Simon Mayo|08:36 UK time, Friday, 7 September 2012

Hooray for Friday and everything that goes with it. Sun shining here and looking lovely for the weekend; with the temperatures looking pretty high on Sunday, it looks like a fine day for lying in the park and saying 'Wahay! Go Sir Tom!" a few times. By the evening it'll be nippy I think so bring layers (my role here has moved from blogger to mother).

Interesting points from the blog yesterday, particularly the 'illicit' recording of radio shows. I too have some cassettes of old shows tucked away in boxes and am just starting to rummage around trying to find them. There is a point to all this and there will be details coming soon but the BBC is keen to hear what is out there to supplement the archives. So if you have some recordings (and I'm sure I too heard Tom Browne talking about the 'Spot The Pigeon' EP), get them ready. Somewhere I have Paul Burnett playing a song for me and getting my name wrong- imagine that!

And with reference to the Mayo clinic query, no, nothing to do with me. My ambition for the book is to get to the point where you google 'Itch' and 'Mayo' and it doesn't take you to details you might not need...

Let's get those ARF tunes in and kick off today's show in fine style. A tune with comes an adrenaline rush please.

Have a trim and and nifty Friday, see you after 5 (and 2, if on 5 etc).

    Morning everyone

Another autumnal morning, breezy and dry but it might rain here later because the combine harvester has been trundling around the field all night and the farmers usually have an eye on the weather at harvest time.

    How about...

Thankyou, Simon for ALL the menshes in all the different guises!

  • Comment number 8.

    Good morning folks,

Simon, I wish that I had kept all my cassette recordings of old radio shows. If only to hear me 'shush shushing' interruptions from my sister/ parents/ dog/ cats as I patiently arm achingly held the microphone to the speakers!

I have just had a look back over the last two years of ARFO and one band seems to be conspicuous by its absence. So how about :

    Virginia Plain - ROXY MUSIC

    or

    Pyjamarama - ROXY MUSIC

    *just a thought, mind* ;-)

    Enjoy your weekends everyone,

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Thanks for the warning about layers, Mum! Yes, we froze at the Cambridge Folk Festival once the sun had gone down, so we will be going prepared on Sunday. Suncream and scarves is the order of the day, I think...

#3 Aww, but it's the quality not the quantity of your menshes that's important, Mrs Boris. And bear in mind that the more tunes you suggest, the more likelihood there is of you getting a mensh...

    ;o)

I won't be around much today, or over the weekend. Taking Mum back home this afternoon, then dropping some of Daughter's stuff off at her new Uni digs on Saturday - although she doesn't go back for another couple of weeks. And on Sunday we will be joining Simon in Hyde Park! And probably one or two other people as well...

    My ARFO suggestion:

ALL MY LOVING - The Beatles

Hello Everyone and, of course, Simon, the motherly blogger, the team and the very very nice young man,

Lovely blog this morning - made me smile - thank you.

Just pooping by briefly as there's loads to be done chez nous today. Elder boy heads off for pastures new, north of the border. So, packing and a bit of housework to be done before the younger boy is collected from school at 12.20.

I'd just like to say I hope everyone has a fab time at the Festival in a Day thingy - I will be listening on the return journey. Thinking of Status Quo playing on Sunday, I'd like to offer, as an ARFO suggestion,

    PAPER PLANE by STATUS QUO

Wishing everyone a happy and sun-filled weekend.

Greetings Mayo Man & ALL Blog Dudes...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

Mayo Man - Yes INDEED 'The Bingo Star First Day Of The Month Sets A President For The Month Ahead Weather Prediction' 'as worked so far for September!!!!!!!

Ave noticed so many times with the turn of the month the weather turns!!!!!!

This time a it was about the 31st of August after a wet bank 'olidee wash out.... The rain said goodbye.... Setting us so far up for a most pleasant of Indian summers!!!!!!

And it 'appens every year now!!!!

Our climate does seem ter ave changed now:

Sunny May/ false start 'eat wave... Ok June.... Wetter than normal July & August.... With s sunny September..... ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Soz ave not been able ter blog but still busy trucking/ working, renovating me living room presently and cycling alot.

But 'ere is an update on me progress so far:

Bingo Star's Quest Ter Become An Olympic Track Cyclist By 2016:

DAY 19 1st September: Little did a know this was gonna be a special day for me cycling wise.

When a was in me 20's a used ter go on a daily power cycle ter keep fit from me Mum's 'ouse down to the promenade on The Wirral... Upter 'oylake then back to New Brighton and then back.

A great cycle as most of it is away from the roads and great ter enjoy the fresh air of the sea. Although often windy being exposed on the seafront... and in winter sometimes it was a killer trying ter cycle against a gale force wind... Then rocket stations coming back with a strong tail wind!!!!!

Ave been curious 'ow fast a could do me old cycle route and 'ow far it actually is as ave never known.

Now that ave got this new app on me phone and with modern technology it's amazing the things yer can do nowadays.

All I remember from me cycling days is me record was about 43 minutes... This sticks in me 'ead for some reason!!!!!!!!

So off a set in the morning before going ter work... A nice sunny day with a moderate 11mph wind.

The outward trip was a test against the wind... Then a flyer back of endurance on the longest stint with the tailwind 'elping me... Near all flat terrain being on the prom.... Then turn around ter 'ead back forming a what looks like a T-shape cycle ride on the map.

A cycled very 'ard.... As 'ard as a could.... Sweat dripping from my face!!!!!

When a got back me time was 49 minutes 3 seconds.... Not bad going considering the wind!!!!!!

And me estimate of 10 ter 12 miles came in at 12.59miles!!!!!!!!!!!!! bit further than a thought for all these years!!!!!!!

These modern day apps are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A was VERY pleased with me first effort at me old ride!!!!!!!

Then it was off ter work in me car with me bicycle in the boot!!!!!!!

Later little did a realise what me daily cycle 'ome was gonna entail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A left me car at work and started me 10km ride 'ome!!!!!!

There was a moderate 14mph tailwind.... A thought a can set a very good time tonight cycling 'ome!!!!!!

A started me ride and flew.... Me legs pedalling like crazy up and down the 'ills!!!!!

Me whole ride 'ome is on roads and up and down gentle 'ills... Notta single bit of flat on the whole ride!!!!!

Me ride went well and as a got 2 thirds and knew this was gonna be a new perosnal best!!!!!!

The worst 'ill on me cycle... A 1km 125 feet rise a powered better than ever before!!!!!!

All that was going through me mind was 'god this is gonna be good!!!!!'

A was gasping for breath... Controlling me breathing with deep breaths throughout the ride!!!!!!

Me legs were 'urting but remembering what ave read on the internet what Lance Armstrong said 'pain is only in the mind!!!!'

A ignored the pain and fought on!!!!!!

'God this is gonna be good!!!!' Again continually going through me mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A powered like crazy the last few kms!!!!!!!!

On finishing a got me phone out of me bag as fast as possible ter turn me app off recording and see what me time was!!!!!!

Me previous new best time was 21mins 47seconds... Set only the previous week.... A thought this could be 21minutes!!!!!!!!! Smashing me record!!!!!!!

A looked at the time on me app.......

    19mins 52 seconds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Smashed the 20minute barrier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A thought WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..... Already!!!!!! Ave only been training for the 2016 Rio gig for 19 days and already ave broken the 20 minute barrier!!!!!!!!

That's an average speed of 29.6kph... Ter put that in perspective Bradley Wiggans won 'is Olympic gold with an average speed of 51.113kph on the road time trail over 45kms.... On a faster light weight 8kg cycle mostly on flat roads. A bike with better gearing and bigger wheels.... All built for speed and on closed roads!!!!!!

I'm on a 'eavy old mountain bike (16kgs) up and down 'ills!!!!!!!!

The only thing a did different this day was a cycled in the morning too... Maybe this is a big factor as it warmed me me internal 'appenings and th emind without me even realsiing it!!!!!!!

Even though it was 11 'ours earlier in the day!!!!!!!

Maybe 2016 is slowly but surely becoming less of a fantasy!!!!!!!!

    PS For ARF:

Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me by that aussie band a think they were/ are!!!!!!

    Good Morning All;

    From yesterday's blog...

Gill - I may well be joining the Blog Coeliac club soon, the symptoms certainly seem to fit, so we'll see what the test comes back with.

Amelia - I'm not a big bread eater anyway, probably because it doesn't seem to agree with me. But if I do have Coeliac disease, I can see me using a home bread maker, because the shop bought gluten-free bread always seems to have the consistency of a brick!

Billie - Well done on your triple last night, I must confess to giggling over it though, especially 'blogger William'! It reminded me of the lyrics from Sheryl Crow's 'All I Wanna Do', I'm sure his name is Bill, Billy, Mac or Buddy... :D

Well done to everyone else who got a mensh, especially Mrs Boris. :-)

LOL at Mayo and Itch, I didn't find out about the Mayo clinic by Googling those words though! :D

Deebee - I hope you enjoy the concert on Sunday, and don't forget your cardy! ;-)

Have a good weekend one and all.

    ARFO suggestions...

    SONG 2 - BLUR

    SYLVIA - FOCUS

#16 Jennie, KatyMac is fine - she has a new job which means she is unable to blog as much at the moment. I'm sure she will pop in from time to time when she can. I will let her know she is being missed!

An unexpected chance to blog as all the girls in the class I'm supposed to be teaching have gone on a trip to the Paralympics!

It sounds as though there's lots of lovely things planned for the weekend. I'm helping out with a DofE walk tomorrow morning and dinner with a friend tomorrow nigth (bang goes the diet!). Sunday will, hopefully, be spent on a lounger in the garden dozing, reading and listening to Radio2.

Adrenaline rush? It's a little too soon for another spin of Chien Noir I think so I humbly suggest:

    Neon Knights - Black Sabbath

I think pretty much all my cassette tapes are gone. I had two autoreversing cassette desks on seperate timers so that I could record the Roger Scott's 3 hour Sunday night show on Radio 1, and that was my listening for the drive to and from work each week for many months up to his death. I had a set of about a dozen cassettes that I cycled through on those recording duties. And once I discovered Bob was back from local radio and on Radio 2 the same process was used to capture his Saturday night/Sunday morning show.

So all those tapes are long gone. The last tapes I still had were my very favourite classic concert broadcasts. Genesis at Knebworth, Genesis at the Lyceum, Yes at Wembley Arena. Dark Side of the Moon live ......

But the internet has made those available in flac form, sometimes remastered by very clever people who were provided with master tapes by "people". So I'm afraid those tapes are long gone as well. I may still have the Elton John Wembley stadium show (the one where Paul Young was on the bill and the whole day was on Radio 1) as I never got round to digitising it, but that's pretty much it now, and my cassette decks are in a box in the attic.

  • Comment number 24.

For those going to Hype Park, enjoy. It's not really for me, apart from "a little bit of the Quo" and maybe Sir Tom if he focuses on his two most recent albums.

In all the fuss about Bruce and the switching off of the PA system before he finished, there was some reaction from people saying that gigs at Hyde Park are too quiet these days as volume has been restricted to appease the locals.

So if you're going, get to the front!

  • Comment number 25.

PS Ave just writted out this blog for a blog friend from the otherside who needs pipe advice!!!!!!

Just thought i'd bang it over 'ere in case anyone over 'ere 'as problems with their waterworks:

Blog friend aka Manchester Calling - WHATTA COINCIDENCE only this week a finished 'boxing-in' some copper central 'eating pipes in me lounge... 100% TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Firstly be VERY careful as yer copper pipes will be live with water and one (usually a thicker 22mm will be yer gas pipe). So be careful not ter stick yer drill through it or 'it it with a stray 'ammer aim!!!!!!!

Yerv still not told me where yer pipes are?????

Verticle from ceiling ter floor.... 'orizontal along the skirting... 'orizontal along the coving/ top of the wall????

    Or even outiside???????@?

Yerv not told me so a can't 'elp directly until yerv given sharper details of where the pipes are???

The ones in me lounge 'ad been banged in vertically right by the door as yer come in with ugly white plastic cooper pipes covers (see link).

These are the quick version but ugly!!!!!!

And yerv gotta drill 'oles right in the middle of yer 2 pipes.... Easy for the inexperienced ter clip a copper pipes and water spraying will 'appen!!!!!!

In my 'ouse a think elderly people living there 'ad the free central 'eating banging in... so sadly the idiots that banged it in.... Did it for speed rather than neatness and niceness!!!!!!!

I've moved the pipes from right by the light switch as yer come in the room... With the door nearly 'itting it... Ter in the far corner corner of the room neatly out of the way!!!!!!

And ave banged the pipes straight down under me wooden downstairs floor that's above the void underneath beoing and old 'ouse!!!!!!

The pipes were above the floor running along the skirting board!!!!!!

But now they pop up neatly under the radiator and straight ter me 'eating valves on me radiator!!!!!!!!

The bit a boxed in in the corner:

A simply got 2 pieces of wood abit deeper than 'ow much the pipes running down the wall stick out.... Me wood 2.4m long by 44mm by 70mm!!!!!!!!

A then drilled 'oles through them and inter the wall (the 70mm side)!!!!!

Then a drilled a deeper enough for me screws 'ole inter me wall!!!!

Then banged in wall plugs bigger enough for the crews but noot bigger than me 'ole in the wall!!!!!!!!

Then a screwed me wood ter the wall!!!!!!

Then yer need some thin plywood or MDF board or similar!!!!!!

Saw it ter the width of yer two pieces of wood thatta now screwed ter the wall either side of yer 2 pipes!!!!!!!

But don't saw it near the pipes!!!!!!!

Then using small lost 'ead nails so as ter be neat when finished.... A nailed me flat piece of wood ter me 2 screwed ter the wall pieces of wood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All this from floor ter ceiling completely covering the pipes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(PS A did before all this use pipes clips ter fix the pipes ter the wall (again drill a 'ole in the wall, wall plug, screw the plastic clip, clip yer pipe ter the pipe clip!!!!))

Finally ter tidy it up.... Yer need ter sand the edges of yer wood/ use some filler!!!!!!!

Then finally finally the best way of 'iding it is wallpaper over the lot.... Looks nice and neat with just the bump of ye rwood on yer wall!!!!!!!

Or as a a've noot goot wallpaper in my room.... Am gonna white gloss the wood the same a sme doors and skirting boards.... Making for copper pipe of niceness and neatness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If yer pipes are noot verticle like mine but 'orizontal along the floor.... Do the same but along the bototm of the wall if yer can't re-route them and 'ide them under the floor boards!!!!!!!!

(most people though leave them on show and just clip 'em with pipe clips then paint them with gloss paint... Look nice once painted and the 'eat won't affect the paint!!!!!)

(just paint them when they are cold aka 'eating turned off!!!!!!)

(yer can even get silver/ chrome paint nowadees if that rocks yer boat/ is in line with yer theme/ colour scheme!!!!!!)

If yer pipes are 'orizontal along the top of the wall/ by the ceiling:

Yer could box them in if yer very clever using ceiling coving... But the pipes need ter be tight ter the wall!!!!!!!!!!

    Not easy!!!!!!

Although a 'ave done coving before just without pipes inside!!!!!

Again most do for the above as for the noot above aka below!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally finally of the finally.... If yer pipes are in a cold place in winter aka a porsche.... Sorry porch.... or an outbuilding etc... Then yer MUST before putting yer wood around the pipes.... Put foam cladding around yer pipes then the wood around both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If outisde such as a cold water pipe for yer garden 'ose.... Then again yer must insulate with special foam or outdoor pipe covering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All the above is available from the VERY BIG DIY store with the orange paint outside and inside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The BIG DIY store 'as experts who are time served (not in prison but time served on the trade)... aka plumbing of joinery who will advise yer of what yer need and back up all that ave said above without saying a smuch as a ve said above!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    'ope this 'elps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 26.

PS Deebee - On the weather a remember yer were saying/ writing August wasn't to bad at your end!!!!!!!!!!

All a can say is yer were lucky.....

Up north (and in London's 'yde Park gigs) it rained alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Creamfields were underwater fields.... The 'yde Park stuff was abandoned etc etc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although a agree somebody up above was kind ter all of the Olympic events.... The Olympics escaped the rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Either way.... Enjoy yer Indian summer thatta predicted!!!!!

    Hi Simon and everyone

Congrats to all menshes yesterday, a jolly well done. Thank you for mine, although I think it was a Twitter wrong and Simon got my surname wrong and said "Kenny" and it is Kennedy, anyway Simon you are 100% forgiven.

As to old recordings on tape, I think I have somewhere a recording of my line number being picked by Kate Bush on Simon's breakfast show, circa 1993 for that quiz, I think it was the identikit quiz but I could be wrong. I also have a recording of when my name was mentioned on DLT saturday show when I won a £6 voucher for correctly guessing the song title from a sketch that was acted out, the song title was Hi Fidelity from the Kids From Fame.

    Now for an ARFO:

    1. MAKE ME SMILE - Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel

    2. YOUR THE VOICE - John Farnham

    3. NEW RADICALS - You get what you give

    4. GENO - Dexys Midnight Runners

    5. GOLD - Spandau Ballet ( cuz I think King Kemp WILL be crowned CBB 2012 tonight, he is lush!

Hope the concert goes well Deebee.

Really shouldn't be here - half day at work and I have stuff to do...

#22 One of the things I love about this blog is that we notice when bloggers are absent.

#24 Ken, I intend to - in fact, maybe I should leave now... Only problem will be persuading the family that we need to start queuing early, and stopping them from getting bored while we're in the queue.

#26 Maybe we were lucky, Bingo - we spent the first 2 weeks of August in various places along the south coast on our boat, and I only remember one occasion when it actually rained while we were sailing. And if you've seen my holiday pics on FB, you will see that there was plenty of blue sky!

I don't think I have any 'illicit' cassette recordings - I do have a box of cassettes somewhere up in the attic, but we don't actually possess a cassette player so wouldn't be able to play any of them any more.

I'm always a bit worried by the ARFO having to contain 'adrenaline rush' as I read it as Simon's code for: 70's/Guitar-based/probably Quo, Slade or Queen. Ignoring the subliminal coded request I suggest:

Meant to say that all my illicit tape recordings have disappeared over the years but I do remember recording Top of the Pops each week and I even recorded Don Estell and Windsor Davies singing Whispering Grass. A tape that I loved as the Wombles featured onit too.

Well, I was very young ;0)

  • Comment number 38.

I remember trying to record TOTP, sitting next to the TV, on the floor, holding a microphone up to the speaker - never worked very well!

I also remember listening to The Top 20, in the bath on a Sunday night - and that was followed by Sing Something Simple, which (whispers) I also enjoyed as the songs on there were songs that my nan had sheet music to, and we used to sing them around the piano - memories.................

  • Comment number 39.

No ARFO ideas from me either - too late now anyway. This week would have seen the 66th birthday of Mr Mercury, so that may well have taken care of today's selection.

I have a fair selection of recordings on tape, all good quality on good equipment, and most of them things one would struggle to find anywhere now on CD. I also have one dead tape deck which I haven't attempted to replace as they seem to be generally unavailable other than at considerable cost. Maybe one day I'll take the plunge.

  • Comment number 40.

Good afternoon everybody from a slightly overcast Horsforth. The ferry web cam overlooking Windermere has water on it – so I’m hoping things dry up for this weekend.

Did anyone heard the bit on Radio4 last Sunday morning. The moon landing illicit recordings are being preserved by the BBC because the wiped their own version? Or have I missed the point & that was what the whole discussion was about. Anyway, we are off to a 60th birthday party on Saturday so a very happy birthday to Carol. I’m trying to think of an appropriate ‘Northern Soul’ ARFO.

I don't foresee any let-up in the busy spell, so I'll just have to blog as and when I can.

Seems like we are lamenting the passing of too many people I remember on the TV when I was younger. RIP Terry Nutkins.

My own Mum is in hospital and the doctors have had "that chat" with my sister today.

Any way here's wishing I had made the journey from Pudsey to the seaside see #2 from Amelia, probably Bridlington btw.

#18 Zoe. Coeliac advice! If you are diagnosed try and get the fresh bread on prescription, it really isn't that bad! Don't keep it in the freezer for too long though as it does tend to go soggy once it has de-frosted!

I imagine youngsters have no idea what we went through to have recordings of concert broadcasts from the radio.

They will never know what it's like to have to make the judgement call of whether to turn the tape over now, at the end of this song, or wait until the end of the next song, and then hope that there's enough tape left for that next song. And the disappointment when you were on your knees peering in the window of the cassette deck and saw the tell-tale sign of the translucent lead in/out tape appearing on the left hand spindle and knew you had messed it up!

And to have to fade down using the recording level knob, before stopping the tape, so as to avoid the noise of the stop process being on the tape. Not too fast, not too slow. Then FFWD to the end, eject tape, finger in to wind beyond the lead-in tape (unless you were using Agfa tapes which had no lead-in bit, but surely everyone used TDK tapes!), reload tape the other way up, then hit record and fade the recording level back up to the exact same level again.

And you had to do all that during the cheering between one song and the next!

The Yes from Wembley on Tommy Vance's first ever Friday Rock Show on Radio 1 was brilliantly done. Each portion of the two hour show was just the right amount less than half an hour, and Tommy Vance's voice conveniently appeared each half hour saying "This is the Friday Show, and you're listening to Yes in concert from Wembley Arena" or words to that effect. It was like a Listeners' Tape Change Signpost. I reckon Tommy and Tony Wilson the producer must have grown up recording stuff at home as well :-)

Even if you manually record something onto a digital device these days on one file, it's the work of mere minutes to load that file into a wave editor, split the tracks, digitally, add in fades at the right places, and so on. All using free software tools.

  • Comment number 48.

Of course with the benefit of hindsight, wisdom and more funds, it would have been easier to use one side of several cassettes, each wound to the exact place ready to go. Then transfer them all to use both sides of cassettes after the event. Albeit that the listening copy would have been a second generation recording so not quite so pristine :-)

Simonward - sorry to hear abour your Mum

Ken - you are making me smile :)) Such passion! I was never much of a taper from the radio - bits of the chart show now and again, but I was a real fan of making 'mix-tapes' from my records, so that timing element was crucial....

    Jennie - I'm intrigued

Deebee - have a great, busy weekend and wrap up warm ;)

  • Comment number 51.

Simonward1964 Sorry to hear about your mum. Thoughts are with you.

Ken, your post about the tapes made me smile. All I can add to that is if the tape got crumpled or caught on a sticky out bit (that was a technical term there) and then you had to use a pencil to wind the darn thing in again. If the tape got too crumpled, the noise sounded like someone singing under water ;0) Happy days!

    Is it hometime yet?

  • Comment number 52.

I still have loads of cassettes with stuff recorded off the radio. I can remember recording my first - I would have been 8 or so. I recorded 4 songs off Alan Freeman's rock show - Action Strasse by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and Bad Company by, er, Bad Company were two of them, and something by Camel was one of the others. Mature music tastes for an 8 year old.

Sadly I no longer have that particular cassette - it was C120 and they seemed to be prone to being chewed up by cassette decks.

I'm pretty sure I also have a recording of Quo at the NEC in 1983, which I seem to recall being shown on Tv and simultaneously broadcast on Radio 2. The first rock gig for The Princes Trust, if memory serves...

  • Comment number 53.

#52 Sir Cumfy, mature tastes indeed for an 8 year old. I was still on Junior Choice music then ;)

  • Comment number 54.

#47/48 Ken, it's good to see that someone else was as fussy as I was about such things as fades. There was a huge degree of satisfaction if you reduced the level with such perfect timing that you hit zero at the exact moment the presenter started talking.

And the number of times I got caught out with songs like Rainbow's Since You Been Gone our something by Status Quo which had a misleading false ending so you faded out too soon...

  • Comment number 55.

#53 Shona - my Dad's influence. I think he was determined to shape my musical tastes early on so that they were hewn from rock, so to speak...

I was still listening to Junior Choice - those four rock tracks were probably followed by The Ying Tong Song or Stan Freburg's Banana Boat Song spoof...

  • Comment number 56.

Simon-So sorry to hear about your mum, my thoughts are with you at this difficult time and sending hugs.

I too remember taping the Top 40 off the radio on a Sunday night and I still have the tapes and they still work (kiss of death now for next time I play them!) I also have a Radio 2 Squeeze concert from 1984 that is very cherished as it reminds me of my mum (sadly gone too) as they were one of the few groups I liked that she did too-Duran Duran (my fave) and Kate Bush were NOT top of her listening choices!!

Off on a Bellrining outing to Kent tomorrow so hope the weather holds. Apologies in advance to any blogpoppets that reside in the Kent area (near Wye) if they have their peaceful Saturday afternoon interupted!!

Off home now so have good weekends all and enjoy Hyde Park for them that's going (Simon included!)

    Love Mrs B xx

  • Comment number 57.

#50 - Autumn_Gale - intrigued by what? If you are talking about Terry Nutkins, he was someone I used to like watching on the box and not necessarily to be informed about wild life! ;0)

Best wishes to you, Simon1964 and your poorly mum - have a hug>>>>>>>> x

Your post made me smile, Ken. Memories of the days of cassette tapes came flooding back. I always wanted a reel to reel (I think it was called), but could never afford it. What improvement I thought it would make, I really don't know!

  • Comment number 58.

C120 tapes were the spawn of the devil. My Genesis from Knebworth was on one of them and it had speed issues. The tape was thinner I think and therefore more prone to stretching.

#50 I never really thought about it as being passionate about it, it's just what I did, but I guess you're right. Music was a massive part of my teens, and I liked to make sure I had the best possible recording.

Those favourites had huge numbers of plays through my teens and twenties. The Genesis from the Lyceum recording was almost like being there - for the Duke tour in the smaller theatres they played with loads of energy, almost souding raw at times, and when listening to that tape it was like being there as it had the same feel as when I saw the show at the Southampton Geaumont.

The BBC is worth the money for it's importance to music and the way it inspires people to love music of all types. Those who say it shouldn't do popular music stations as the commercial sector can do it can never be allowed to win that argument.

  • Comment number 59.

#54 Hah, so true Sir Cumfy. The horror of getting it slightly wrong and just hearing the presenter speaking. Infuriating!

  • Comment number 60.

#55 LOL. I now have the Ying Tong song going round in my head ;0)

Time to skip home I think. There has been a terrible accident here on one of the main routes out of the city so folks are having to re route home and the place is deserted.

  • Comment number 61.

    Afternoon all

I think it's not unnatural that people who are enthusiastic about choosing music on here should have been those who were passionate about their music (and taping) from an early age.

I seem to remember that the ironing board was used in our house, as this kept the mic at the approriate level, especially for taping from TOTP. I think I also have a tape still somewhere of our glorious leader when they broadcase live from Greenbelt, back in 1990 or so.

Simon, very sorry to hear about your mum and hope the Doctors can doo all they can for her.

Simonward - Healing thoughts for you and your mum.

I've been AWOL as I have channeled my disappointment, including anger into becoming a Breast Cancer activist. October is fast approaching and we are spearheading 'pink washing,' that is all to common with companies cashing in on Breast Cancer merchandise while making the consumer think that they are doing this for the cause, when in fact, no monies is going to breast cancer, in any way, shape or form. We need prevention and a cure, because there has got to a better way than the same old, slash, burn and poison.

    Think Before YOU Pink!

Late post from me, from Daarn Daaarsett... Congratulations to Queen Toots - inspired choice, very well deserved!

SimonWard, so sorry to hear about your mum. Thoughts are with you.

LilacBlue, we have a Pink Day at work every year, but we don't buy the "official" merchandise. Staff are encouraged to wear something pink from their own wardrobe - the year before last we had a pyjama theme which was very popular, and last year people made pink cakes. The iced buns with a strategically placed cherry on the top were a hit... I'll leave it to your imagination to picture what they resembled... ;o) Staff pay a minimum of a pound to participate and there are prizes for the best contributions. And the money goes straight to the charity.

Better sign off now as it's getting late. Night everyone!

Cancer and my names Larry, huh! Brought a big smile to my face :) see!

  • Comment number 84.

Thanks to those of you that commented on Think Before YOU Pink. Compared to other women's issues, promoting breast cancer awareness is politically safe. It is the companies that claim nothing about where your 'pink' purchase monies would go, be it a capped amount (not transparent) or what nominated charity they will give to. It's not all that flag-up pink wear during October. We are trying to raise public awareness, to ask critical questions about breast cancer fundraising.

Watching Lord Ammo - seems to have sorted his wardrobe connundrum out!

We have harvested the onions, sorted through the potatoes which had a very smelly, rotten one in amongst them - pooooh!! and picked yet more runner beans.

As one has to when the heat is such as twas this afternoon, we sat under a tree with a glass of something fizzy and looking up, there was a dove's nest we have been watching and there were two baby doves, perched on a branch next to the nest and then mum/dad came down to feed them. That's the first time we've seen baby doves - they tend to fledge when they are almost adult size.

Then we moved to the pond, where it is shaded, and saw a grass snake coming down for a drink (and hopefully not our remaining fish!) We haven't seen a grass snake for a few years so good to know they are still about.

A day for the wildlife, I think!!
