Just get on with it

Simon Mayo|08:44 UK time, Thursday, 6 September 2012

Morning bloggers, here we go with another day, another Thursday of sunshine on the estate and not a fox to be seen anywhere. It might not be the season (if there is such a thing), my anti-fox policies may have worked or they might just have moved on to another neighbourhood. Maybe they just tired of a boring diet consisting of our thrown-out pasta/mouldy fruit'n'veg/take away left-overs etc. Whatever. They are using someone else's garden as a bathroom/kitchen/killing ground and that's with me.

School run time. Can I blog first or will the rat-run call? Will I remember the tricks and short-cuts? Will I be able to keep control of the radio under sustained pressure for something 'younger'? I remember insisting my dad listen to Tony Blackburn before dropping me off at school in Solihull- not sure he was a fan really. And I had to sit in the car early on a Wednesday (?) to hear the new chart positions which I think had been announced Tuesday lunchtime by Paul Burnett. Remember when you cared about the singles chart and knew every song? Now I'm looking forward to Pick of the Pops already just so I can tell child 2 or 3 (whoever is in ear shot) any of this stuff. Again.

Nigel cooks sone fishy stuff with chilli and bits and pieces tonight and oldies please for BUILDERS and BUILDINGS. We are to be encouraged to build improvements such as conservatories, rear extensions and garage conversions. There will be fewer restrictions and rules, that kind of thing. More sheds! Bigger sheds! I'm seeing it as an anti-fox strategy-if I build over all the grass they won't want to come back anyway.

Have a fresh and invigorating Thursday. See you after 5

Had to get the 154 bus to High/St St Alphege church and walk 1.5+ miles through Malvern park....and you tell the kids these days and they don't BELIEVE you

I remember sitting, tape recorder microphone in hand, pointed at the radio ready to record the Sunday night chart rundown (was that legal??) Still have the tapes somewhere with whatever DJ talking over the records playing.....

Couldn't listen to the Hairy Cornflake/Simon Bates/Tony Blackburn or whoever was on R1 on the way to school, no ipod, see (my mum had Terry Wogan on at home).

Our lovely leader was my morning radio listening, back in the day, I was late for school many a morning because I couldn't tear myself away, my mum solved teh problem (sort of) by buying me a walkman.

    ;o)

#23 JBG - I would recommend getting the Park and Ride, if you don't want to have to take out a mortgage. I can't remember where in the country you are so don't know which direction you're coming from, but there is one just off junction 11 of the M11 (Trumpington Road), and there are others around the perimiter of the city too. The Grand Arcade car park is very central for the shops and colleges, but popular on a Saturday and quite expensive. Queen Anne Terrace car park is also fairly central, and cheaper - I'm sure you'll find both of these on G**gle. It depends where in Cambridge you are going. Hope that helps, and good luck to your daughter!

Really enjoyed the return of Dallas last night, but thought John Ross didnt look like he was having nearly as much fun being BAD as his dad used to. Come on lad, up your game.!

Re taping the charts, there are many songs that to this day when I hear them I expect to hear Broono Brooks's voice at the end of. I was NEVER quick enough with the pause button :-)

Good Morning all, a little late to the blog I fear today.

Could write a lot of stuff today about government pronouncements on planning and the relaxations proposed but fear I might be put on the naughty step.

So I will just stick to the task in hand and choose some builder and buildings tunes

HANDYMAN - JIMMY JONES or JAMES TAYLOR

WALLS - TOM PETTY or GLENN CAMPBELL

CEMENT MIXER (PUTTY PUTTY) - SLIM GAILLARD

(great song but too old I fear to be played on show)

EMPIRE STATE OF MIND - ALICIA KEYS

  • Comment number 39.

#34 Thanks Jennie. :-) I'm being tested for Coeliac disease, amongst other things, which seems to be quite common these days. Funnily enough, I read an article recently (based on research from the Mayo clinic - No relation, I presume?) which suggests that higher levels of gluten intolerance could be linked to modern wheat crops...

    https://io9.com/5931255/is-modern-wheat-making-you-sensitive-to-gluten

#35 Gill - I've seen all of the new Dallas episodes, and I loved it! I don't think John Ross is supposed to be quite as dastardly as his daddy (yet!) But keep watching!

  • Comment number 44.

Meanwhile, in a different direction, did anybody else remember this:

    ARCHITECTURE & MORALITY - OMD

Not sure it even classifies as a "song" or "music" - more like sound art or aural art. I remember when that album came out, thinking it was the most mind blowing thing ever. Now it just sounds like a few good singles, with some weird noises for extra padding! The artwork on the cover is still a classic though.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE COWBOYS GONE-PAULA COLE

  • Comment number 46.

    How about this one

"Why Paddy's Not at Work Today" I know its been done by the dubliners and the Clancy Brothers.

Tells the tail of how not to get a pile of bricks down from the 14th floor.

  • Comment number 47.

My cassette recorder had a built in mic, so it used to sit in front of the left speaker of the radiogram, and my sister's matching machine used to sit in front of the right speaker of the radiogram to record the chart show when it was simulcast on Radio 2 IIRC in the days before Radio 1 went FM. So I had the left channel and she had the right channel of the stereo output. Oops!

Can still remember Tom Browne playing Match of the Day and announcing it as "from the splendid Spot The Pigeon EP" which I think was my first ever experience of hearing Genesis. Many years of prog listening later, it was all his fault :-)

Notfeeling the best today, as went to the dentist yesterday for what should have been two fillings and ended up as being one filling and one extraction. So I now have one less molar and one sore jaw!

Can I suggest, as we're in a Bernard Cribbens state of mind that

Zoe - glad your foot is nothing too serious and I hope the remaining tests reveal nothing too serious. I think modern bread production causes a lot of problems, the so called Chorleywood process means the gluten doesn't get a chance to fully develop. I make my own using a bread maker. Takes 2 minutes & is cheaper too.

Well done Bill and Shona and Florence! And Mandy earlier, I think?

Surprised that the Randy Edelman version of Concrete and Clay was played, instead of the (IMHO) much better Unit 4 + 2 version - as suggested by my venerable blogfriends above.

Can I ask somebody to Copy and Paste my ARFO suggestion tomorrow, please, as I won't be around at all - but will be in the car at 5pm to listen in!

  • Comment number 75.

    Hi Parsley Cat.

Where abouts in the country are you?

I was lucky enough to still see them on the Sarf Downs at the end of October last year.

Quite a few of the returning migraters (?) are here already, teal, widgeon and geese in huge flocks.

Today, I had a shock, as a sparrow hawk hit my back window and sat on the washing line, looking somewhat stunned!! I usually lob the watering can at him, if he pounces into any of the shrubs, after the little chatterbox sparrows.

I know its nature, just dont let me see it :)

  • Comment number 76.

Well done Alison from Eastleigh on your 3 worder. Also to Mandy, Mrs Boris, Billie, Flo and 'lil' ol' me.

So I won't greedy and try for an ARFO tomorrow. Out in the field all morning but hope to catch up for a chat later ;)

#75 - Leyland (near Preston in Lancashire). We have Martin Mere (WWT) just down the road, so get all the wildfowl including Whooper Swans in winter as well as having the Ribble marshes (RSPB) for similar visitors. Ithink there has been an odd osprey appear at migration time, too, but you have to be lucky to catch those sort of events.

A friend of mine (whose PC I'm using at this moment) has taken photos of a sparrow hawk with the remains of something unidentifiable in her garden. Oh an we also have peregrines nesting on old mills and churches as well as in disused quarries nearby. The dark, satanic mills came in useful in the end !

  • Comment number 78.

Oh wow Parsley Cat. I will look up those places. Isn't it amazing, just where peregrines will nest?

#78 Sal, it is amazing where Peregrine Falcons will nest... every year since 2003, a pair of Peregrine Falcons have hatched and reared youngsters on the roof of a nuclear power station about 20 minutes from here, where it is sheltered and nice and cosy for them. My friend, a huge bird lover, is the environmental officer there, and she can watch them, via a CCTV, from her office desk and she often sends me pics of their progress during their time on the roof.

Sal, I hadn't seen that story but I just think it's AMAZING how birds will follow a microlight and reading through your link I saw some lovely pictures of those beautiful Cranes.

Did you watch the wonderful Earthflight series ealier this year on BBC 2 because some of the filming was done a few minutes from here where a local microlight guy had befriended some geese from the moment they hatched and they followed him everywhere for several months.. he even took them to a wedding with him. They flew alongside him and the programme showed the Bass Rock where the thousands of Gannets are from February until October/November and also Tantallon Castle on the mainland, just across from the rock.

It's really nice that several bloggers are bird-lovers and chat about birds from time to time.
