Well that was that and blooming brilliant it was...well except for No Direction and the spice girls!!



I seldom use Twitter but over the weekend I tweeted the most that I ever have to the point my battery died at 9.30! The tweetage was partly down to a newly added FB friend whose game it is today on the red boxes show with Noel, turns out he is a kickboxer and personal trainer and all round good egg!



The Who were amazing, when they they came on I nearly burnt my kickboxing uniform as I thought OMG its McVicar!!!!

What am I going to watch now? Aleady missing it, and what I think I'll miss the most is the fantastic written coverage the morning after every day. I think these games have certainly demonstrated to me the value that still exists in a good quality newspaper. I take mine in electronic format on my tablet of choice, and I consider it has been fantastic value at £2 per week for the last 17 days. Some of the coverage in there has been simply brilliant.



For the oldies theme, I shall suggest.....

I thought of WHEN I'M CLEANING WINDOWS - GEORGE FORMBY as well. But I'd be happy with PICK UP THE PIECES - AWB as an alternative.



I tend to agree with Lord Ammo about last night. I was relieved when it ended. The Games were fantastic and will be long remembered. Yes, we did it right, but I just felt last night went on a bit too long. But that's a minor criticism and everything else was quite outstanding. Quite an act to follow, but your home Games will always be extra special and I'm sure Rio will do a wonderful job.

I thought the first half of the closing ceremony was all a bit strange.



I did enjoy The Who, Eric Idle, Elbow and the tribute to the BeeGees. Jessie J has a great voice.



I feel that the 'Only Fools' sketch probably had the rest of the world scratching their heads.

The closing ceremony was interesting - enjoyed some of it, didn't understand some of it (Russell Brand? Why?) and thought Gary Barlow was very brave to carry on with his part in the ceremony.



#27 - I agree that it was too long but the overall impression of the 17 days will stay with me for a long time, I think.



I also think that the Paralympics are going to be one of the most successful there has been - people have enjoyed the feelgood factor of the 'lympics and I think that will carry on with the Paralympic games - hopefully Channel 4 will make the same brilliant job that the BBC did this time.

I think the length was affected by how long it took the athletes to get in the stadium. There was a suggestion on Twitter that were supposed to all get in during the two Elbow songs. That didn't happen, so they had to play back the pre-recorded bit from the start while they continued pouring in. Of course, that might have been the plan for such a situation.



Certainly some of the floor managers with headphones on could be seen running backwards with knees exageratedly high as if trying to gee the athletes up to move more quickly into their "pens".



No way will you ever get the athletes at the closing ceremony to move any faster than "as fast or slow as they feel like moving" when they're coming in for their party, taking photos, clowning at TV cameras etc. And why should they really?



Emilie Sande seemed to have some tuning issues early. Presumably she couldn't hear herself properly.

Yes, I am still beaming with happiness and pride after two weeks of Olympic splendour :)



I missed the last part of the closing ceremony as I got dragged to bed but thought it was different and quirky with a few good highlights. It is impossible to please everyone. I'm sure there were people who loved the parts I hated and vice versa. Let's embrace our individuality and differences for a little while longer at least! I am just happy that I did not have to cringe through Paul McCartney again! :D

I didn’t not enjoy the closing ceremony, in a perverse way. It was fun watching along with twitter. They are always a little dire. Nothing was going to live up to the jaw-dropping magnificence of the opening ceremony and after the most sensational 16 days of sport frankly nothing was going to be satisfying enough.



Bits were good, I loved Elbow and Eric Idle. I had the sound down on the telly and listed to 5 Live who at least had the sense not to blether though Elbow.



Much of the rest was just bleugh and forgettable. As lots of folk tweeted it was what we all feared the opening ceremony would be like.



I hated the “supermodel” bit. I thought one of them most powerful messages of the Games was strong, powerful, successful, healthy women as positive role models?



Perhaps one of the problems was that it wasn't enough about the athletes? They seem caged in for most of it.

Well that's a bit of a disaster for the Beeb after a (generally) excellent last fortnight. Clare Balding's off to work for the new producers of Channel 4 Racing.



Seems to be an odd decision. As much as I love horse racing, I think she's developed into an exceptional all round sports (and wider) presenter. Will she still get those same opportunities when being lead presenter on a programme that runs pretty much every week on Channel 4? No Wimbledon on the radio, no Olympics, no Trooping the Colour, no Radio 4 shows? Hmm....

Hello Blogpals!



I'm back from my adventures on the high seas (and some of them were quite high - upwards of 2m waves at times). Had a fantastic time - we clocked up about 500 miles, quite a lot of it under sail. We started from Falmouth and crossed to the Isles of Scilly, stayed there for a few days then sailed back to Falmouth, then to Fowey, Dartmouth, Weymouth, Chichester, Dover and finally home to Ipswich on Saturday night. Would love to tell you all about it, but I don't want to take up too much blogspace. No doubt one or two tales will come out in the course of time...

Not able to post long posts, so here's part 2 of what I wanted to say...



It was of course a complete coincidence that we were in Weymouth at the same time as the DT team (honestly!). I hadn't been listening to the show, so had no idea they were going to be there. I did think about going along to say hello, but decided the best policy was probably to let Simon and co get on with their jobs. Although I wish they'd said they wanted to go sailing - never mind dinghies, I could have taken them out for a sail on a real boat... ;o)



Missed you all loads. I was able to lurk a bit, when I could get a signal on my phone. Thanks to Florence for entering a medal count guess on my behalf - it's around what I would have guessed if I'd been here anyway. Well done to Shona for getting the gold!



I'm feeling quite disconnected with the whole choon choosing thing still - will have to make a concerted effort to get back into it over the next few days...

I'm still busy so just a quick poop in to say that I've updated the post in the Blogpoppets group on FB regarding the Sheffield blogmeet. The most popular date was 20th October so I'm planning around that as a date so far.



I've been recommended the Showroom cafe bar which looks pretty central and near the station as it does food most of the day on Saturday. Any of our S Yorks contingent know whether its any good?

#72 I guess she still considers horse racing to be her core sport and as the Beeb have finally given up completely then she has little choice if she wants to remain involved in the sport.



I suspect she's a freelance, but what else she can do depends how many days and when she's committed with Channel 4. Even if the big racing festivals don't clash with some of the stuff she might have been involved with elsewhere it's still got to affect preparation time.

Afternoon all



Too late to mensh-chase, but to add my £0.02 on the closing ceremony - I thought it was pretty good but a bit bland (I tweeted to Simon that I thought it was very Radio 2 ARF). Of course we all have our personal taste, but it wasn't as quirky as the opening ceremony and would have benefitted from something other than 'pop' music I felt. I also tend to agree on the negative comments regarding the unncessary super-models.



Deebee - looking forward to hearing your tales from the high seas and congrats to Shona on the medal tally.



Devasted to hear about Clare Balding - but I hope she's more 'on-loan' to C4 and is able to cover the big stuff with the BBC (a bit like John Inverdale who covers all of the tennis on ITV4 but is with the beeb the rest of the time).



I don't quite know what to do with myself now it's all over, but as it's A-level results on Thursday, I suspect I'll be plenty busy towards the end of the week.

#85 How do you gen up for the general knowledge questions? Watching quiz programmes? Doing pun quizzes? Or are you just reliant on the reserves if memory you already have?

I meant pub quizzes, obviously. Though a pun quiz sounds fun :o)

Read quiz books constantly, go to the odd pub/pun quiz, watch every quiz programme known to man. Problem with Mastermind, from my humble perspective, is that the questions are historically quite 'Oxbridge', which artist/author/classical scholar etc. Any question that starts with "Which Jane Austen novel..." bring on the cold sweats. However it is my suspicion that a fair few questions are worded to make them sound difficult and the answer is the only thing you know on the subject. In my audition a question started "Which 18C cabinet maker wrote...." at which point I'm panicking thinking 'I only know one cabinet maker ever, Thomas Chippendale' which of course was the answer!
