Last orders...

Simon Mayo|08:11 UK time, Friday, 10 August 2012

Well that's that and back into the studio. The first show seems light years away but we are done and it's been a great ride.

On the way home from the show yesterday, squeezing in between Aussies, Dutch, Irish and Union Jack-clad fans, we were wondering whether we would experience anything like this in the UK again. The answer, presumably, is no.

The football tournaments are great but bring with them supporters who are overwhelmingly male. And they shout a lot. These games have brought families of cheery fans, all amazed by what they are a part of. And smile a lot.

Sorry about the technical problems we had last night; much frantic re-wiring and re-plugging got things sorted eventually. The studio at Radio 2 central will appear an oasis of calm in comparison.

Watching and meeting athletes who get ignored all year round but then get their moment in the light has been terrific; the sailors, riders and taekwondo stars were the highlights of recent days.

Soon normality will return and the sporting headlines will be about the spoilt millionaires of football (sounding like Sally now, will need to watch that). But until then...

We have another party to start ladies and gentlemen of the blog. Choose your partners for the opening dance and choose the song to dance to. Get your requests to the DJ in now!

Have a fruity and nutritionally balanced Friday, see you after 5.

I've really enjoyed the Olympics but it will be a relief to get out of this leotard!

Back to normal next week, I guess, but I won't be here on Tuesday. I have a rare trip to London planned. It's been years since I was in the Metropolis; wish I had someone to hold my hand!

    Catch you later

    Good morning all,

It is a beautiful day today. Sun is shining and God is in His Heaven - as my Grandma used to say.

Do you think Simon is looking forward to 'normality'? I've grown quite attached to my Lympic name - maybe I'll keep it for the Paralympics. :-)

Glad that the contract is going well, Sir Kitt.

    Busy day here, too.

Some excellent suggestions already, but I'd like to add a particular favourite of mine:

Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Fears

Will it be a barbecue weekend? Whatever happens, have a great time.

    Morning all

Found myself cheering at the TV last night as Jade won her Taekwondo gold - I never would have believed I would be doing that.

I'm really going to miss these games - my Stevenage season ticket and the ticket for the League Cup Opener against AFC Wimbledon next Tuesday night are sitting in front of my PC at home and really not looking very enticing at the moment. Hopefully next week it will seem more attractive.

No OARFO suggestion from me this week - too soon for the black dog's next appearance!

  • Comment number 13.

Very quiet in here this morning. Either everyone's out enjoying the sunshine or my asking for a dance has scared them away...

Good morning Champion Blog Stars :)

The excitement continues here. 52 medals, so far? Who'd have guessed it ;) But I'm sure we're going to exceed that with a final push.

Hasn't it been great? What are we going to do when it's over? Just have to find something else to get excited about!

My ARFO choice today, a real feel good choon...

MAKE ME SMILE (COME UP AND SEE ME) - STEVE HARLEY & COCKNEY REBEL

    Back in a bit ...

BJxx (I'm going to miss that name too!)

  • Comment number 19.

    Me again!

It's a beautiful day here. I hope it lasts through to next week.

I also agree that Vildeen's suggestion at #1 is a top choice and I hope it's in with a chance, perfect for the handover.

Dancing, Sir-Kitt? I do love a bit of a dance. And well done to you for Lady C's surprise boating, sounds very romantic :)

Harry, I got a certificate at primary school from the Green Cross Man, and a gold star for knowing my Green Cross Code! If you need a hand to hold, it would be my civic duty to see you safely across a busy highway! lol

I cannot have people coming to my neck of the woods and fearing for their safety, I take Care in the Community very seriously ;) lol

  • Comment number 22.

#19 BJ, a qualified Green Cross Coder? Just what I need! If you're not busy Tuesday morning I need help negotiating Euston Square. A fully certified yokel now, I'm in danger of losing face in the Metroplis :0)

  • Comment number 23.

    Good Afternoon Everyone

A bit late to the party due to Domestic Goddess things this morning. I think #1 Rio is a perfect choice for the ARFO today so I won't suggest another.

Harry and Jilly, I used to be in the Tufty Club and had a badge and everything if that's a help. Did anyone else wear the squirrel in a policeman's uniform badge?

  • Comment number 24.

#23 Shona, would be handy but I think you're in the wrong Metropolis (and note the full complement of 'O's this time!) :0)

  • Comment number 25.

Very quiet on here today - everyone out in the sunshine perhaps, or resting up after the exertions of the past few weeks!

Looking forward to the Paralympics - hope Channel 4 do it justice. Am I right in thinking that Clare Balding will be presenting? Will look it up.

I think she has done really well with whichever sport she has been fronting.

  • Comment number 26.

It's odd that every Thursday, almost without exception, I think of a really, really good suggestion for an ARFO. it's also odd that every Friday, almost without exception, I forget what it was and suggest a whole bunch of other tunes before remembering a couple of hours later what it was that I had in mind in the first place.

It's happened again. Yesterday's moment of inspiration was:

COLIN BLUNSTONE - Say You Don't Mind

From next week I'm going to write these things down!

  • Comment number 27.

Well it's another day in paradise here... (2 weeks down, 3 to go!)

I was very happy to be proved wrong, on all counts, r.e The Olympics. They've been a great success, and with the Paralympics to come, it ain't over yet!

    OARFO suggestions...

I'VE HAD THE TIME OF MY LIFE - BILL MEDLEY/JENNIFER WARNES

    CRAZY CRAZY NIGHTS - KISS

HOT IN THE CITY - BILLY IDOL

  • Comment number 30.

Hi everyone on this beautiful Friday morning, when it's too nice to be indoors!

Jennie, Clare Balding is my favourite Olympics presenter, followed by Shirley Robertson and I don't understand why the dull Gary Lineker isn't replaced by the lovely Clare!

A few dancing type ARFO suggestions....

DANCING IN THE STREET ~ David Bowie and Mick Jagger

    THE LOCO-MOTION ~ Little Eva

    YMCA ~ Village People

    MAMMA MIA ~ Abba

DO THE HUCKLEBUCK ~ Coast to Coast

A bit of Country for Scotch git and Saw Doctors' fans....

JOYCE COUNTRY CEILI BAND ~ The Saw Doctors 'Friday night and off we go'

  • Comment number 31.

#25 J-E W, I agree, Clare Balding has been great throughout, she has a real enthusiasm that is catching, even for sports that I've never watched before.

#22/23 Tufty Club? Sounds interesting, does one have to be hirsute to join? lol No squirrels here, we had Darth Vadar dressed in a green suit instead! :oS

Euston Square you say Harry? I know it like the back of my hand, see you there! And don't forget your 'O's' lol

    Sun's still shining!

  • Comment number 32.

    Afternoon all

Just managing to lift my nose from the grindstone!

I will miss the 'Lympix too; I've really enjoyed them, and watched far more than I ever have before. I think next week will be very quiet, luckily I'm off on holiday on Wednesday, so will have that to look forward to.

    OARF:

YOUNG AT HEART - The Bluebells

'cos I really like to dance to that one!

    Hopefully back later

    T x

Just looked it up and Clare is doing the Paralympics for Ch4 and Jonathan Edwards too as well as other presenters so at least we don't have to listen to Lineker droning on, Flo!

    Good morning everyone!

It was morning when I started to write this, honest!

#13 Sir Kitt. Pte Daley coffeeBuzz reporting for duty.

I can honestly say that I have never been accused of dancing. Possibly something approximating to dancing, or that could be construed as an attempt to dance, but not *actually* dancing.

    ;)

    #18 BJ - I can't recall a time I was so happy to be wrong. I guessed 48 medals :)

ARFO (for Harry's adventure next week)

THE ONLY LIVING BOY IN NEW CROSS - CARTER THE UNSTOPPABLE SEX MACHINE

    Off to the coffee machine...

#31 BJ, it's a date! Best make it the station though, if that's OK, in case I get lost finding the correct exit! ;0)

  • Comment number 36.

Oh Flo, I'll also need to second your Hucklebuck. Long lost friend and I used to practice our dance routines to that and then perform for our parents. I wonder if I remember any of the steps?

Off to practice........... I may be some time

  • Comment number 37.

#31 (and further to my #35) BJ, just thought of a snag! How will you recognise me?

I know what: look out for a really tall, dark, handsome, sexy man. I'll stand next to him ;0)))

  • Comment number 38.

#37 So there'll be two tall, dark, handsome men standing side by side at Euston? Bloody hell, roll on Tuesday! ;) lol

  • Comment number 39.

Arfo-ternon all - I decided to watch a film instead last night & it was:

    CHARIOTS OF FIRE - VANGELIS

Or the re-doing of Nadia's song #10 for Sports Relief a couple of years ago:

TEARS FOR FEARS - EVERYBODY WANTS TO RUN THE WORLD

Better go - 'They' may be snooping on me....

  • Comment number 40.

If it was down to me Clare Balding and Jake Humphrey would be doing ALL the live sport presentation on the Beeb. They are really the two jewels left at the Beeb for that sort of stuff these days. I don't mind John Inverdale either, although I know that there's a bit of reaction against him on the net these days.

Balding always gives the impression that she's bothered to do her homework and knows what she's talking about, and Humphrey has a brilliant skill of looking highly relaxed and at ease in his environment.

  • Comment number 41.

Good idea Ken! I like Jake, especially as part of the threesome with David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan in the F1 programmes. Clare always appears to be warm and really friendly and seems to ask her own questions, rather than the predictable ones that others like Hazel Irvine asks... although Hazel is brilliant at reading out really complicated looking foreign names!

John Inverdale is very likeable too and sounds relaxed. I have also enjoyed watching Sir Steve Redgrave and found him to be a very warm presenter who seemed to look after the very emotional rowers as they stepped off their boats. I loved seeing him hugging and congratulating Sir Chris Hoy the other day too... a special moment.

  • Comment number 42.

#36 Shona, we have occasionally had the 'Hucklebuck' song in our line-dancing class also Mental as Anything's song, 'Live It Up' and it's not all country stuff as some people think line-dancing tunes are!!!

  • Comment number 43.

Good afternoon all! Are you all warm enough in this heat? Never mind the weather is due to break next week apparently! Just in time for my annual holidays!

So a dance and holiday tune would seem appropriate. "Holiday" by Madonna would be my ORFO.

  • Comment number 47.

Jilly, I'm so happy for the GB team too and there are so many really nice competitors aren't there? The Olympic Games seems to have brought out the best in everyone, from what I have seen on the TV, and will have long-lasting memories, not only for those who have attended the events, but also for those of us who have been glued to the TV for hours on end. I am also looking forward to the Paralympic Games, which I hope will also be very successful for all involved.

Simon is right, the games have been attended by smiling families who were amazed because we sure were! I'm going to miss all of it and will mostly miss the positive energy pouring out of London at the moment. I also think it was great that so many teens were hired and now well, at least they worked during the Olympics.

    Katy, welcome back!! :0)

I stink at picking a Friday tune, so I bow to all of your choices. Oh, I used to watch Jake Humphrey on BAMZOOKi our boy loved that show.

It is glorious here today and just to echo everyone else, I will miss the 'Lympics too. The games along with the Queen's Jubilee has certainly given this country a much needed lift in spirits.

Queen's 'We Will Rock You'.... well done Listener Les!

We've not had a Queen ARFO for a while!

Have a nice evening everyone. The sun is still baking the streets here so I hope that the good weather keeps up for everyone over the weekend.

Thanks for letting us know NCM... I shall look upwards in the hope of seeing something of them as we are surrounded by fields and have no road lighting, so no light pollution! Good Afternoon/Evening All!

It's been a wonderfully beautiful day and it's a lovely evening here now.

I've not contributed much to the blog this week. Apologies. I've been really busy - not caught all the shows - although I did catch LympicExcitement when I did! Not up to date with bloggers' news. Apologies again. Hope to catch up over the weekend - which I am really looking forward to!

We're promised another beautiful day tomorrow so we're planning a BBQ - Gammon Steaks - Piccante Gorgonzola - Tinned PineApple Slices - Salad & Jacket Spud. Maybe Corn on the Cob starter?

Tonight's supper -because it's so hot and we CBA - is Cheese & Wine! Ha! And some Crackers!

I hope you all have lovely weekends.

On Mr. Carrington's Show -I've just sung along to - word perfectly - recognised the Artist - Ruby Murray - a song called "Happy Days & Lonely Nights". Can't have heard it since it was issued in 1955 and don't ever remember learning it! Black Magic!

  • Comment number 63.

    Evening all.

So nice to read back on everyones 'take' on the Olympics.

I did go up on the 2nd to the tennis and possibly failed to reply to some bloggers questions at the time.

We had ground passes to Wimbledon, passed on to us by a Family member, who was a more dedicated fan, she had centre court tickets.

Our ground passes, for £20 allowed us into the venue and to watch any match and stay as long as we liked, but not for centre court, altho, it was available to watch on a HUGE screen from a grassy hillside, next to the court and the ambience was pretty amazing. The ground passes also allowed travel in zones 1-6, so covered a long way out of town.

We mistakenly thought, that we would be allowed into the Olympic park and ventured all the way over there, only to find out, that it was a no go zone, but did manage a few pics and absorb the atmosphere of the place, even before it had been used for the track events?

London, wow twas just a great place to be and I am proud to think, that in the words of Max Boyce, I know cos I was there.

    Oggy oggy oggy.....

Harry, seriously if you need a tour guide, that knows their way to Camden (for ace food!) let me know.

    Happy days :)

queen opened up the show i wouldnt call that a dance tune

has any one else noticed the best way to get on arf and get on the show is to pick a song by spingsteen, led zep, queen and ac/dc you can expect at least one of those artist will be played eack week.

  • Comment number 67.

I've tried now and again with an ELO track Gazza!

  • Comment number 68.

yeah sal maybe you should try with one of the artists i have mentioned you might get the crown lol

Have never been one for go with the flow Gazza!!

  • Comment number 70.

Sal, I know that like me, you like birds, and a few weeks ago my sister sent me this pic from when she was at her neighbour's house, where Little Owls have nested for many years in an old barn and were featured on the 2011 Springwatch programme, and when this one was out of his nest, my sister got a quick peek of it before it was quickly replaced! It looks like a toy and is sooo cute so I thought you might like to see it.

  • Comment number 73.

I thought you might like it Sal, so I was hoping to see you on here before I forgot about the picture, but I've not been on here very much this week as we've had visitors, good weather, an Edinburgh Tattoo visit, Michael McIntyre in Edinburgh, the Manfreds locally, watching the Olympics etc... you know how it is when life gets in the way of blogging at times and it was so nice that you were at the Olympics and sampled the atmosphere for real!

Morning all - good to see you all ... and thank you for the welcome back messages.

Well well well - 57 medals for us Brits plus 3 definites in the boxing finals plus whatever the next two days will bring. Mo Farah? Tom Daley? Would put money on the former.

Pink Floyd in the closing ceremony? Now there's a tasty prospect.

  • Comment number 77.

Confession Time - I have not listened to even one minute of Radio 2 since the Olympics began.

Also - not being able to see a list of 'Music Played' on the last couple of weeks' shows has increased my sense of disconnection.

    :^(

I have listened to very little radio, Conchita. I have really enjoyed watching the Games and Mr, who was very bah humbug about them before they started, has been sucked in as well - especially the cycling.

I just hope everything is used after the whole event has finished and doesn't just sit and become derelict.

    Good morning everyone.

I think we finally have a summer!

    #63 Sal, you're a wicked temptress! ;0)

I have important things to do on Tuesday and my attention must remain undivided. Euston Station and the Wellcome Library might be as far as I get. It's a long way for me to travel and I intend make the most of every second :0)

With all these offers of assistance, I think I'll have to this again very soon.

Hey, Conchita! Good to see you back!

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

  • Comment number 80.

A wicked temptress? LOL!! I take it you've been to Camden then Harry?

Good luck for Tuesday, I hope you achieve what you set out for.

Right, I feel a deckchair day beckons.

I agree with J-Ennis and Harry, a good day indeed :)

I see that the new series of Mastermind started last night - I recorded it and there was no-one answering questions on Number One hits so I presume that our very own Rostronposkett wasn't on last night's prog - do we know when he is on?

Are you lurking out there, RP?

#80 Sal, I think you should change your name to "Siren Sal" - tempting innocent wayfarers onto rocks with promises of sensual pleasure in exotic places*

    * No, never been to Camden LOL

  • Comment number 83.

I didn't see any rocks last time I was in Camden Harry, as for the sensual pleasures, if bang bang chicken is your thing, then get your self down there!

    Hee hee :)

  • Comment number 84.

Jennie - I was going to reply with something sensible and worthy regarding the sustainability proposal for the Olypics and its legacy ... then I thought of 'Twenty Twelve' - the mockumentary and had a quiet chuckle ...

... oh, and nice one - the Mastermind reminder.

*adds voice to call for Rostronposkett*

    :^)

Thanks Harry - you'll soon get fed up with me. Good to note that your London trip will remain on task - despite your blatant totty tout. I take it that despite your varied residential past [I know of Plymouth and Wiltshire for two] you've never lived in big bad London?

#84 Conchita, with so many personae, how could anyone get fed up with you? ;0)

Never lived in London and hardly ever been there. Crossed it hundreds of times and had one 5 day stay in '85 for Springsteen shows. Other than that, just day trips. Last time I was there was to collect my BAFTA c. 1988 :0D

The BIG QUESTION that 'ave 'eard both yersen Mayo Man & CLP discussing is 'ow do we get ter Rio as a competitor.... Considering the oldest competitor of the 2012 gig was 71.....

It looks like there's a possible possibilty that any of us could be at Rio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So 'ow could we get there.... A will look inter it further over the next week on the blog......

For me power cycling looks closest ter my assets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PPPS Just wanted ter say the BBC's whole coverage of The Olympics 'ave been TOTALLY BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

No commercial station could or would do as good as the beeb 'ave done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

My goodness NEVER must the beeb be privatised!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Notta single stupid commercial break ter wreck the live coverage..... Excellent all day commentry and analysis..... And Radio 2's programmes 'ave bene excellent.... From your extra show CLP... Ter The Mayo's live from the gig evening events and the programmes on R2 in the evening i've really enjoyed: Of the 'istory... Analysis on 'ow to compete... And the blaggers comedy guide (VERY funny!!!!!!!).

I really found it interesting too the programme on Wednesday about 'ow more champions believe in god than athiests!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never really noticed but yes.... The amount of times yer see somebody winning and they cross their 'eart or look ter the sky.....

From 'usain Bolt.... Ter yesterday's gold winning female 'ammer thrower!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Good Morning All!

Another lovely day here - with a welcome breeze.

@ Chickster - we did look but it was too cloudy. No Perseids for us.

I would like to VERY belatedly wish CBuzz Happy Birthday!

  • Comment number 94.

    Hi everyone

Another really nice summery day, but how long will this warm spell last?

#75 Grand Amplitude Brandon, you said you missed the opening song last night but wasn't surprised when you heard what it was... and since Simon had said "Choose your partners for the opening dance and choose the song to dance to" I was surprised to hear that Queen song as it didn't seem to be anything like a song to dance to, unlike most of the songs suggested by bloggers!!!

Maybe Simon likes dancing to it!! ;o)

  • Comment number 95.

I think the NYM (or NYW) who chooses the choons has shares in Queen! I don't dislike them but how many times have we heard that tune over the 'lympics and I would love to see the dance moves , with a partner, that could be done to that choon. Perhaps Simon could demonstrate and post a video that we could all see!!

Thanks B of the Bang Billie - for the reminder about a birthday boy what I missed saying Happy Birthday to .. and might that be just the most grammatically incorrect sentence anyone dare type in here?

    CoffeeBuzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!H*A*P*P*P*Y* B*I*R*T*H*D*A*Y*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Harry - yeah - and each and every persona appears to be a tad waspish today. We have a sociable afternoon and evening lined up. Perhaps oiling the spikey cogs with a Pimms cocktail might help balance the mood.

    :^)

  • Comment number 97.

#95 Jennie, your message made me smile as I am now picturing Simon dad-dancing to We Will Rock You and can't wait to watch it on YouTube!! :o))

Enjoy your sociable afternoon and evening, Katy, especially with some chilled Pimms!

  • Comment number 98.

Thanks Flo-A-Hoy - am feeling better already. And won't it be dull when we all have to go back to our ordinary blog names?

    I love fancy dress

Still got the TV on indoors - and I've just spotted Another Way To Fall Off Your Bicycle As An Olympic Sport. I expect we, the Brits, are quite good at this as well.

Mountain biking in Essex. Oh the irony

Well, he sets the goalposts, Flo and then they appear to move so I feel he should justify the choice that has been made! ;0))

Enjoy your Pimms fuelled socialising Conchita!
