Devoid of hats

Simon Mayo|08:07 UK time, Friday, 31 August 2012

Good morning from the chilly estate. The price for leaving a skylight open is 1) a very cold kitchen and 2) spider webs where spider webs shouldn't be. I knew I should have been more ruthless in throwing out my squatting arachnid friends but it is too late now. An early morning flourish with a duster and all will be well.

Interesting conversation with an American friend last night, most impressed with the coverage and tickets sold at the Paralympics here. Then this morning reports of the almost media-black out in the States about the games; NBC are not showing highlights till September 16th! The host broadcaster will always provide more coverage than foreign ones of course but our American friend felt it reflected wonderfully on the UK that we get excited by the Paralympics. It's only a sample of one but thought you'd like to hear it.

2 show day today with the good doctor back in place after his ridiculously long holiday. Ray Winstone (in case you miss/missed him on Chris's show) with his Sweeney co-star Ben Drew who is Plan B the rapper. They are the Regan/Carter double act in the movie of The Sweeney. Except it isn't. It is nothing like the loveable cheeky-chappy cop show and really a violent London cops and robbers film, fronted by a Carter and a Regan.

Then it's a swift Central line to R2 for some ARF duties and the crowning of a new ARF Queen/King. Over to you.

Have a startling and affirming Friday, see you after 5.

As promised (and remembered - just hope it works), here is Hoffs' ARFO, posted yesterday.

    73.At 15:22 30th Aug 2012, Hoffs wrote:

    Good afternoon lovely bloggerfolk!

I have pooped by to ask the most massive of massive favours of anyone who might possibly be able to help me please?!

I know that I havent been the most regular of bloggers this summer - I hope to be back next week, with sensible suggestions and not too much waffle but in the meantime:

I am about to leave for Granny Hoffs' house where internet access is intermittent/indecisive so I won't be able to access the blog. If I ask really really nicely, please could someone cut and paste my ARFO suggestion for tomorrow?!

Three generations of the Hoffs family are leaving tomorrow before the sparrows have woken up to make the trek to London to spend the day at the Paralympics. Granny and Grandma Hoffs n' In-Law are accompanying us on our grand day out to watch swimming and some of the cycling before heading home. The excitement (and phone calls between households) has increased as the week has progressed.

It would be a complete miracle if our suggestion was to be chosen but it would make our day. Having discussed this at length, we would like:

GIMME SOME LOVIN - SPENCER DAVIS GROUP (or the Blues Brothers version, we aren't too fussy)

We will be in the hottest of venues (in both senses of the word) and we will be so glad that we have made it!

Looking forward to the show as we wend our way this evening and wishing happy and sunny weekends to you all (especially Stressed Erica)

    See you soon xx

  • Comment number 2.

In case that didn't work, Hoffs' ARFO suggestion is

GIMME SOME LOVIN - SPENCER DAVIS GROUP (or the Blues Brothers version, we aren't too fussy)

Hope he enjoys his day at the Games, all very exciting again.

  • Comment number 3.

Just thought, not being as regular as some, I don't know everyone particularly intimately and I've assumed that Hoffs is of the male variety, don't know why. Now I thinb about it I'm leaning more towards Hoffs being of the female persuasion so apologies if that is the case, for calling you a 'he'.

Whatever, I hope you all have a wonderful day. :o)

    *Hope I've redeemed myself*

WHOLE OF THE MOON ~ The Waterboys

  • Comment number 6.

    Morning all

Out walking last night the moon was huge and magnificent. I winked as requested by Neil Armstrong's family. Can I second your suggestion Florence; it was exactly what I was thinking driving to work. It is a shame we didn’t get to do moon oldies this week.

Fun filled day at work, scary stuff happening, roll on 5.05 (or 2.00 if I am very lucky).

So, to cheer me up I would love to hear any of the following.

    Teenage Kicks - The Undertones

I Bet You Look Good on The Dance Floor - Arctic Monkeys

Fields of Fire - Big Country

Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & The Waves

    Good morning all,

Finally shaking off a nasty summer cold lurgie - although the gravelly cough I'm left with sounds as though I'm on 20 Woodbine a day!!

#6 Amelia, I agree, we should have had a moon theme this week what with the sad news about Neil Armstrong, and the blue moon tonight.

#5 Flo, your choice of The Waterboys gets my vote, too.

If not, my ARFO suggestion this week is:

    Walk This Way by Run-D.M.C

Enjoy the sunset this evening. I shall give a wink to the 'blue' moon on this poignant day, as I heard on Chris's show this morning that Neil Armstrong's funeral is today. How fitting....

    Good Morning All;

It's been a hectic start to the day here, but as things seem to have calmed down (for now) I thought I'd take the opportunity to pop in for a quick blog.

Florence - (From yesterday's blog) I was dreaming of Matt Smith's Doctor, I often have dreams that are like episodes of TV shows, or films. It's worth trying to get a good night's sleep for, I say trying because more than 2 hours sleep together in this house is never guaranteed.

Mandy - Thanks, I did indeed out myself as a Whovian yesterday! ;D

Molly Coddle - Sorry to hear you've been poorly, I hope your cough clears up soon. x

Harry - Hope you can rejoin us on a more regular basis soon.

    ARFO suggestions...

    BLUE MOON - THE MARCELS

WOOLLY BULLY - SAM SHAM & THE PHAROAHS

  • Comment number 30.

Happy birthday Gill - and many more of them!!

A little tale for the nature lovers ...

I had to get up in the night to answer my own call of nature - it was 1.45am and it was so bright outside that I thought we had left the outside light on. It was moonlight like I've never seen before. There were shadows of the house and trees etc - it looked a bit eerie but beautiful at the same time.

Then, when I went back to bed, I could hear a blackbird absolutely singing his heart out! He must have been really confused by the light - I hope he managed to get some sleep and was awake enough for the real dawn chorus.

#34 Also I think there were several of us who thought Parsley_Cat was female, until we "met" him on FB. And our leader sometimes gets Billie's gender wrong, and when Dougal and I met him at Cambridge he seemed quite surprised when she told him who she was as I guess he'd assumed from her name she was male! Unless someone post an overtly gender-specific comment we have to make assumptions which sometimes turn out to be wrong.

A belated Happy Birthday Gill, hope your celebrations last into the weekend too :)

Do we know anyone else celebrating their 40th soon? Gazza?? Ps, just in case Molly isn't around today, its MCW, keep up, keep up ;)

Right, I'm off 'on my bike' ..... Please, no punctures today!! I've invested in a 'slime filled' tyre that mends itself. Hmmmm, we'll see about that!!

    Happy Days.

Good morning! Hope all is well.

Will change my name when I can think of a new one. Lots to do to get settled in. Back to my old desk on Monday. But only 2 weeks until I get my much needed holiday.

Today is my Gran's 98th birthday. She is amazing. Lives pretty independently in sheltered housing and still sharp as a knife.

Gazza, I reckon you owe Laura Robson an apology ;-)

    Congrats to cBzz!

Off to hairdresser. Back later. Have a good weekend whatever you're doing. Packing, Billie?

Just popped in after a late night out to say that like Jennie and Billie, I was also saddened to hear the death of Max Bygraves, who sang about the pink and blue toothbrushes and a song very similar to Billie's name!

I heard tonight that Hal David, who used to write with Burt Bacharach has also died, aged 91-yrs, I believe. :o(

Night night everyone... I bet Gazza is lurking somewhere!! Night Gazza x

Glad you are home safely Mo & happy birthday to your gran!

So Perfect Circles's former pupil Jason Smyth won 100m gold tonight. He will be going for the double double next weekend when he runs in the 200m. Aside from being hugely talented he is lovely & let me hold his 2 gold medals from Beijing.

Doctor Who was amazing tonight. No spoiler for those who haven't seen it.

Andy Murray won, if slightly tortuously.

This week's Wittertainment podcast made my cry I was laughing so much.

Dinner tonight was fajitas with home made tortillas. Dead easy to make.

    Good Morning All

We've had rain overnight and it's still a bit grey. Never mind - it's Sunday and I DO like a Sunday.

Going to try to have a RELAX before the big onslaught next week.

Hope everyone has a lovely Sunday.

  • Comment number 96.

Oh, it's quiet on here today. Probably all the night owls having long lies today?

The weather has really brightened up here which made a long drive at lunchtime rather pleasant.

I thought Dr Who was great too but wasn't quite sure about the comment Amy Pond made after she slapped Rory implying we are all aggressive in Scotland. Hey ho, it still really entertaining though.

#95 Good luck with everything next week Billie. X

#98 I think that you are asking for trouble there with that sweeping statement, Gazza!! You little tinker!

Billie, I do hope that all goes well next week.

Good to have you back 'home' Mo. I hope that your Gran had a wonderful birthday.

Jennie, I, too, spent the afternoon in the garden. I am looking after the garden next door as they are away. He is a very keen gardener, I just hope that he doesn't return to a plant graveyard. ;-)

#92 We were amazed that Andy Murray won. I was convinced he was struggling with the heat and humidity. Well done him, though.

Surely we can push for over 100 posts??
