Another hat dropped

Simon Mayo|08:40 UK time, Thursday, 30 August 2012

That Autumnal chill lets you know precisely where we are and who's in charge. 2 enormous spiders in the house late last night too-I let them proceed unimpeded. There will be a moment of reckoning here as I'm sure there will be a moment shortly when certain demands are made and their ejection is called for; the old postcard and cup trick will be do fine. I've no idea about the spider life-cycle but my guess is this is their favourite time of year. Webs everywhere, house visits to make, bath trips to enjoy. Something is up.

Straight from the show last night to a showing of a friend's new film so consequently no food was consumed until late night nuts (not a good life choice). Now a large breakfast will be needed to make up for it. The threat of Nigel only delivering a salad tonight is only making things worse. Ok it might be a Lamb Za'atar salad (not sure either) but it is still a salad and we expect more frankly. Come on Nige, pour some chilli sauce on it.

And it's DR WHO oldies please. New series on BBC1 this weekend (you hadn't noticed?) so it is time for those timelord tunes you have knocking around please.

Have a well-organised and on-time Thursday, see you after 5

    Morning all

Anyone else managed to see Deep Dark Woods this week? Saw them at the Borerline last night and they were quite brilliant. We fortunately got a full 1hr 40 set from them. Those who went to Bright earlier in the week had a horter 75 minute set as they were up against a venue curfew apparently.

If anyone's going to End of the Road this weekend then they're not to be missed - although they're first on on the Saturday on the main stage so only 45 minutes I think.

Jackie Greene, the support act, was really good too, some really gorgeous songs in his half hour set.

As far as the return of Dr Who, I've been trying to think about an approriate song relating to "BBC SPOILERS" but can't think of anything appropriate to match my disgust at the way they trail the return of the Daleks and spoil any sense of surprise about it. There really are some clueless idiots in charge of our TV channels.

Ah yes, spiders... Daughter had one in her room the other day - she's terrified of the things. Son tried to get rid of it for her, but dropped it on her floor. Her extremely messy floor. Said spider scuttles away under piles of goodness knows what. Cue hysterical girl...

Billie - Chris Evans played "The Beat" this morning, and I thought of you. Top tune!

My favourite Dr Who has to be Christopher Eccleston, although I liked David Tennant in the role too. Matt Smith is just too young...

  • Comment number 51.

#20 Ken - I love Deep Dark Woods, not had the pleasure of seeing them live, but I'd like to if I could. Glad you enjoyed seeing them. :-)

Deebee & Amelia - I LOVE Matt Smith! I think he's a better doctor than either of his most recent predecessors, and I loved Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant too. I think that although Matt Smith is young, he is ageless in a way, I can completely believe that he could be almost a 1000 years old, and an alien! I thought Christopher Eccleston was great, but he never really nailed the alien side of things, for me at least. David Tennant was my favourite doctor, I even payed a small fortune to go and see him in Hamlet, but I thought his doctor was a bit too human, and prone to falling in love. The writing let him down though, I thought Russell T Davies was great, but he was very overindulgent at the end ( I mean the doctor said goodbye to everyone and their dog in his swansong!) I'm not a big fan of Steven Moffat's writing at times, I thought the whole River Song arc was a bit of a letdown. I think he tries to be too clever at times, and his stories can lack heart, strange when the doctor has two! Anyway, I've rambled on there, when I really only meant to say that Matt Smith is now my favourite doctor.

All of this talk of hat dropping, Flanders and Swan, Tom Lehrer etc. What, I wonder, will we have given todays kids to take through life with them? Actually, I have a secret motive in asking that question, and that is to recommend to parents (Grandparents?) the TMBG album I mention in #47. 'tis very good.

  • Comment number 55.

#51 Zoe - I agree with you about Stephen Moffat. The episodes he wrote for David Tennant, in particular Silence in the Library and The Girl in the Fireplace, were magnificent. I loved River’s story but it was a great idea stretched too far in the current series. Perhaps he wrote better with Russell T overseeing things?

Just remembered something from last night's show which brought back memories - the mention of being called 'Fanny Fanackerpan'. I think it was Sally and the sport's lady who were discussing it and Simon had never heard it before.

I remember being called that as a child by my nan and probably my mum - not too sure.

On t'internet it says it comes from a song sang by Gracie Fields - maybe!

Has anyone else heard of it?

    JW

  • Comment number 58.

Jennie, I always remember a friend from my primary school days sometimes being called 'Fanny Fanackerpan' by her grandma and I would have thought Simon, in his fifties, would have heard it before!!!

My favourite Doctor Who is David Tennant and he was such a natural and never appeared as though he was acting and goodness knows how he could keep up that English accent all the time!

I wonder why he wasn't allowed to be a 'Scottish' speaking Dr Who, like Sylvester McCoy was!

  • Comment number 59.

Apologies for lateness - I have a note.

After another absolute and thorough drenching out with the dogs this morning I had to do a quick change into a fit state then be off to the optician in a neighbouring Borders town about 6 miles away (had a bit of a panic with some flashing lights a couple of days ago and, being me, needed to put my mind at rest).

Being my first time at this particular optician (I only started wearing 'old age' reading glasses about 18 months ago), and the nature of my reason for wanting an appointment, they said they would give me a good going over and check everything thoroughly. So I had my chin and forehead clamped into various contraptions while they took close up flash photography (making everything purple) of my eyeballs, tried to poke my eyes out with some puffy thing and asked me to push a button when I saw a white light. On top of that they dripped acid (well, that's how it felt) into my eyes to (blind me!) make my pupils bigger so they could have a good look around inside. All this was as well as the usual reading letters and the reds and greens and things.

Anyway, turns out my eyes are healthy and he can't see anything wrong - PHEW - but I need stronger reading glasses (that middle old age creeps up blooming fast!). Went to look at new frames - fancy something bold this time after my Granny Smith nose perchers of last time - but the sun had come out by this time and was glaring through the windows so, with my acid house raver eyes, pupils like huge black dinner plates, I was almost blinded and couldn't see a thing, screwing my eyes up and feeling around like a mole.

I told the receptionist, well I think it was the receptionist - it was a big pink blob with a voice, that I would come back to choose my new glasses another day, when I could see properly and left the shop. I then ricocheted down the road feeling a little motion sick by this time wondering how the hell I was going to drive home! I visited a supermarket and bought things I don't really need to kill a little time then went and sat in the car for over an hour until the acid had worn off enough for me to be able to peep through screwed up eyes sufficiently safely to drive home.

So, that's my excuse. And now I'm too late for any suggestions so I'll just offer this one which I know wouldn't get played anyway:-

IF I HAD A TARDIS - The Lancashire Hotpots (from their latest album 'A Hard Day's Pint')

Nice to hear Chris play 'The Beat' by The Look this morning - thought of%2

  • Comment number 60.

#58 Florence - There was much discussion at the time, as I recall, as to why David Tennant didn't use his native Scotch accent. The reason given by Russell T Davies, was that Rose had imprinted so much on the Doctor that when he regenerated from CE to DT, DT's Doctor spoke more like she did. I thing DT was quite comfortable speaking like that, as he has used that accent many times before.

  • Comment number 61.

Great post Erica, sitting here giggling, at your story telling not your plight obviously. The puffy thing is weird, my head always jerks back as if I've been hit.

In a bout of collective office madness we are having fish & chips for lunch!!! We have a state visit tomorrow and everyone is feeling more than a little manic.

  • Comment number 62.

Dan Dare (Pilot of the Future) - Elton John

  • Comment number 63.

Glad to hear your eyes are ok, Erica. My Mr has episodes of 'flashing lights' and the optician said it was a form of migraine, without the headache.

    JW

  • Comment number 64.

#60 Thanks for the explanation, Zoe! He is good at disguising his Scots accent but I suppose all actors can do it and some English actors are very good at sounding Scottish! :o)

  • Comment number 65.

#59 - Erica - if you weren't stressed initially, you certainly will be after that lot. I have glaucoma and have the eye pressure tests (puffy thing), visual fields tests (white dot spotting) and so on done so often that it's now just part of my general routine. That and the use of eye drops several times a day. The one bonus is that I get one free standard optician's visit every year.

Happy to know there is nothing fundamentally wrong with your eyes. Wish I could say the same about mine.

I would keenly encourage everyone to have their eyes checked at least every couple of years - as with most medical things, if they are found early, they are much less aggro to deal with.

  • Comment number 66.

#59 / #65 - Erica - I have some friends who live in a village called Ancrum. Nowhere near you, is it ?

  • Comment number 67.

Parsley Cat, Glaucoma sounds painful and we once rehomed a lovely elderly Basset Hound that had early Glaucoma and despite numerous costly visits to the Dick Vets in Edinburgh, laser treatment, drops etc Trusopt and Xalatan - maybe the same as you have), it got worse then gradually spread to his other eye and it broke my heart when he went completely blind but being a Basset, he used his nose in any case, and could get along at speed, but had to be kept on a long lead or he would have disappeared after hares and pheasants.

Would you have to pay for eye tests if you hadn't got Glaucoma? I thought they were free for everyone... same with dental check-ups.... (?)

  • Comment number 68.

#55 Stephen Moffat's "Blink" was the best piece of television of any genre that year in my book. So brilliant to take such a standard children's fear thing (did that statue/object/whatever move while I wasn't looking) and turn it into something so sinister with those Weeping Angels. And on a Doctor-light episode as well - excellent. And Sally Sparrow is welcome to come back as the Doctor's assistant :-)

  • Comment number 69.

#67 Florence - I think it's just us in Scotland who get free eye tests and prescriptions (Wales get free prescriptions too, not sure about their eye tests)

#65/66 Parsley_cat - I'm about 20 mins away from Ancrum. I don't know anything about glaucoma, and hope I never do, but agree that everyone should have regular eye tests - the things they can check for nowadays are amazing even if it is all a bit weird and wonderful (and a little sadistic, I have to say!). Is glaucoma 'controllable' or treatable if caught? Sounds as though you are being treated throroughly though which is good.

#63 Jennie Wren - migraine? Never even considered that - something else I don't know anything about, I thought migraine was nightmare headaches that lasted forever (from descriptions I've heard). Does your Mr have to take anything or avoid anything?

And the Fanackerpan thing. I have a Fivepenny Piece CD (amusing Lancashire folk band) with a track called Fred Fanackerpan on it. I also have another CD of amusing Lancashire folk songs (yes, I know, it takes all sorts!), which I've looked for and can't find, but I'm sure that has a song about Fanny Fanackapan on it. It has the likes of The Oldham Tinkers, Bernard Wrigley and Mike Harding, amongst others, on it - perhaps Simon should ask Mike Harding about the Fanackapan thing?!

  • Comment number 70.

#67 - Florence - the distubing thing about glaucoma is that there is no obvious pain / discomfort, despite the fact that the eye pressures are way above normal. It develops slowly and you get used to the gradual change. This why I said what I did about regular checks. You would have to pay (in England at least), but £10 a year is cheap to protect your sight. There is no reversal for damage at present. Very interesting that the same drops are used on animals as people, though - I've had both of those and others, too as well as surgery - which also doesn't hurt.

  • Comment number 71.

#69 / #63 - spot on with the migraine thing. I get this very occasionally and it has only once gone on to the headache stage. Usually clears after 15 - 20 minutes and a quite spell in a darkened room (or cell).

As far as the treatment goes, it's just about constant monitoring every few months and to 'keep taking the medication'. I have to pay for this lot as well, but there is a pre-payment option in England (currently about £110 for 12 months - all prescriptions free on delivery). I hate to think how much ot would cost if I had to pay for everything.

  • Comment number 72.

#68 Ken - I'd forgotten Blink was one of his too. Brilliant episode and as you say Carey Mulligan was great. Bigger & perhaps better things for her now than a companion I fear.

Donna was my favourite companion; closely followed by Amy.

  • Comment number 73.

    Good afternoon lovely bloggerfolk!

I have pooped by to ask the most massive of massive favours of anyone who might possibly be able to help me please?!

I know that I havent been the most regular of bloggers this summer - I hope to be back next week, with sensible suggestions and not too much waffle but in the meantime:

I am about to leave for Granny Hoffs' house where internet access is intermittent/indecisive so I won't be able to access the blog. If I ask really really nicely, please could someone cut and paste my ARFO suggestion for tomorrow?!

Three generations of the Hoffs family are leaving tomorrow before the sparrows have woken up to make the trek to London to spend the day at the Paralympics. Granny and Grandma Hoffs n' In-Law are accompanying us on our grand day out to watch swimming and some of the cycling before heading home. The excitement (and phone calls between households) has increased as the week has progressed.

It would be a complete miracle if our suggestion was to be chosen but it would make our day. Having discussed this at length, we would like:

GIMME SOME LOVIN - SPENCER DAVIS GROUP (or the Blues Brothers version, we aren't too fussy)

We will be in the hottest of venues (in both senses of the word) and we will be so glad that we have made it!

Looking forward to the show as we wend our way this evening and wishing happy and sunny weekends to you all (especially Stressed Erica)

    See you soon xx

  • Comment number 74.

Hello Hoffs *waves frantically across the room*

No, I won't be able to C&P your ARFO tomorrow.

    "Why?" I hear you ask...

Because I'll be at the games tomorrow too!!! We're watching the athletics in the morning, so I'll say hello if I see you there.

  • Comment number 75.

Ken & Amelia - I loved 'Blink' too, it might possibly be Steven Moffat's best episode, the weeping angels were a great addition to the classic Doctor Who monsters. I loved Sally Sparrow too, but as Amelia said, since Hollywood came calling, I think Carey Mulligan is unlikely to reprise the role.

Donna was also my favourite companion, probably because she wasn't romantically interested in the Doctor, they were just best mates. I do have a soft spot for Rory though, never been that keen on Amy Pond though. I liked Rose in the beginning, but the more obsessed with the Doctor she got, the more annoying she became. Martha would have been better if they'd never made her infatuated with the Doctor, just because they've started casting attractive actors as the Doctor, must every companion fall in love with him?

Stressed Erica - I think you've uncovered the origin of Fanny Fanackpan. The site I googled said that there was a song made popular by Gracie Fields during the war, called 'Fred Fanackapan', about a young lady bringing her gentleman friend home for the first time. The female equivalent was Fanny Fanackapan.

#73 Hi Hoffs! I'll happily C&P your ARFO suggestion for you. You could also try tweeting Simon as a back-up, if you can get Twitter on your phone. Hope you have a fantastic day tomorrow. And the same to JBG too.

Whoever mentioned River Song (I've had a quick scroll back but I can't find it), I think she's coming back in the new series...

    ;o)

Autumn_Gale - sounds like you had a fab break!

    Afternoon All!

The grey, blustery chilly morning has become a warm sunny day - still blustery though!

    Need to read back ..............

  • Comment number 79.

    Good afternoon!

Nothing to add to the Dr Who discussions. Tried watching a few times but it's not for me.

All packed up & ready to go. In all likelihood the next time I post will be from home sweet home. Tomorrow is going to be a bit frantic.

    Enjoy the show

    Afternoon All,

The clouds are still here but no rain yet.

#59 Erica, what a picture you painted, fabulous piece of literature, it did make me smile, not in an evil way you understand.

#67 Florence, from my understanding you only get eye test free if you have Glaucoma, or a similar problem. Diabetics get them free too.

A bit of trivia, about 2 years ago Hubby went for his general check-up being a contact lens wearer and the Optician told him to make an appointment with his doctor ASAP and to tell him his optician had sent him. The eye check-up only told the Optician Hubby had high blood pressure and diabetes. Needless to say he always gets his free now.

As I mentioned earlier I have not watched Dr Who for quiet a number of years, so my favourite assistant was Sarah Jane (alias Elisabeth Smith RIP) she came back with a childrens programme The Sarah Jane Adventures which were very enjoyable, I used to watch them with my daughter.

Meanwhile I wonder what sort of hat Simon keeps dropping?

Have a good evening everyone, happy listening.

#69 - he doesn't take anything for the 'flashing lights', just lets it subside which takes about 20 mins, as Parsley_Cat said. He says they start in the centre of his vision and work their way out to his peripheral vision. He hasn't identified any reason why they occur either.

The weather has turned distinctly breezy here and not very warm either - we are supposed to be having a warm spell here in the south, starting tomorrow - fingers crossed!

Just been going through daughter's spellings ready for spelling test tomorrow (hers, not mine!) only to find that the teacher has misspelt one of the words in her list - she has given the American spelling. Classic! Don't know whether to laugh or cry! (Sorry, too many exclamation marks!!)

#73 Hoffs - If I remember, and can manage to work it, I'll cut and paste your ARFO for you. Have a great time at the Games!

I'm back in time for the show!

#36, Sharon, thanks for asking I'm ok, doing lots of physio and psychotherapy because along with my breast, this experience has done my head in a bit.

Alice, did you get the trousers? I did, and shirts and socks. Mine goes back next Thursday and he is good to go!

#59, Stressed Erica, liked your story and good to know your sight is normal, when everything wears off.

Deebee, did you like the Paralympics opening ceremony? Good to read your discussion of it Amelia. I loved it and was highly entertained and learned quite a bit. Looking forward to these next eleven days of viewing. Off to get dinner rolling.

    Oh Bruce...

One would have had to know that The Doctor had 2 hearts to suggest this. How clever!
