It's hayfever. Really.

Simon Mayo|09:25 UK time, Tuesday, 22 May 2012

Morning and greetings, quiet on the blog yesterday, everyone with stuff to do, people to see. Let's crank things up with a buzzy, active hectic blog of wonder. Final school run for child 2 today as A levels beckon. 14 years is a lot of dropping-off but I wouldn't have missed it for anything. The school run gets a bad press, particularly in the cities but it can be a time when you learn stuff and have conversations that would never happen anywhere else . In the radio fights (which I had with my dad too) she gets too inflict her taste in breakfast radio and I get to lecture her on what they're doing wrong. Hours of fun for everyone. Child 3 will need a lift for a year more and then I will be a retired school runner. The words of "Sunrise Sunset" from Fiddler on the Roof arrive all too often these days.

So.

Today we welcome Gryff Rhys-Jones to Drivetime, he's back on BBC1 next week in 'Britain's Lost Routes', a 4 part series uncovering lost routes across the UK. These, he says, are the forgotten pathways that shaped Britain. Britain used to be a difficult country to cross. So there's the Welsh pilgrim's route, an Essex hay transporter's route around the Essex coast, a Tudor Royal procession and a Scottish cattle driving route, and all in the company of the witty and urbane Mr Rhys-Jones.

We don't do 'lost' anymore, not when there is sat-nav and GPS to help but let's try LOST oldies please to shape the tunes from 5 (and sorry for the few flower tunes yesterday; needed to get some Ultravox and Robin Gibb tunes in).

Have a generous and uplifting Tuesday. See at 5.

    LOST - COLDPLAY

Here's hoping I don't get lost in the back lanes of Wilts in search of the flame. Got to build myself up to explaining to Mini Hoffs that he won't see the yellow plane....

    Good morning everyone.

Glorious sunny morning here in Cumbria again. Does two warm, sunny days make a summer?

Lost? Well you'd certainly have trouble finding your way around should you end up:

Another of option from the same band, Mo? :0)

    Good Morning All;

I enjoyed yesterday's show, a lovely tribute to Robin Gibb, and I enjoyed the interview with Midge Ure, he sounds like a nice fellow.

It's a sunny day here, and after yesterday's queasiness, the lawn demands to be mowed.

    LOST HIGHWAY - BON JOVI

  • Comment number 18.

Oops, bums, JBG got there first - sorry JBG - can I second it?

Hope Mr Mayo's last school run went well. I absolutely agree that on the whole its a pretty special time of day. Its that time when your children know that they have you all to themselves and can ask you that particularly tricky question that they have been meaning to ask for ages. We too have music 'discussions' - although the odd story CD does get thrown into the mix and the Fishermen's Friends CD that lives permanently in the car for the days when we can't agree on what we should listen to. We are lucky enough to to have some pretty beautiful scenery to drive through too. Mr Mayo, if you are ever feeling the need to do a school run, I am sure that you would be very welcome to the three Hoffs boys for a morning!

    Got to run. Excited!

  • Comment number 19.

    Lost Oldies:

HERE THERE & EVERYWHERE - The Beatles

GOTTA GO HOME - Boney M (without someone shouting 'Barbra Streisand' every 30 seconds)

Apologoes for any duplications - will read back:

LOST IN MUSIC - Sister Sledge

LOST WEEKEND - Lloyd Cole & The Commotions

ROAD TO NOWHERE - Talking Heads.

  • Comment number 21.

Simon, I wouldn't worry about the lack of flower tunage from yesterday. It seems like Mr Evans played a few of the 'discarded bloom tunes' this morning on his Breakfast Show.

  • Comment number 22.

    Good morning, everybody!

    Here goes, then...

    HELP - THE BEATLES

Yesterday's server problem has been fixed. It would seem that my roaming profile, err.. roamed.

Now all I have to do is reinstall everything, set up all my files and shortcuts again and hope that the problem doesn't re-surface!

  • Comment number 25.

Morning all. A lovely sunny day to return to the blog.

I have to admit that I get lost quite a lot. I don't have sat-nav so I quite often manage to get lost in town centres etc. It all adds to the thrill of the journey!

    Lost oldies:

Adding another vote for 'Lost in France' - Bonnie Tyler just because it's a great song and I hope to re-enact it later this summer!

    Lost Highway - Bon Jovi

I'm looking forward to hearing Gryff Rhys-Jones today on DT also looking forward watching his TV series, uncovering lost routes across the UK.

    Morning all,

DT team, bloggers, petpoppets and the misty-eyed DT Dude.

We've all been there, cast off like an old pair of slippers - but don't worry, kids are like boomerangs, they just keep coming back for more!

Child #2 (son and heir) is running in the Edinburgh marathon this weekend - in aid of the BHF (his dad died of a heart attack at 49) - and no, I did not help with his training APART from nagging him to get a check-up at the docs and washing the kit (held at arms length) - BUT he is of course grateful for the donations I & my friends are making to his justgiving site....finally appreciation in the form of cold hard cash.

RE Themeof LOST, as I had a mensh last night (very end of the show, missed it as I was eating chinese!) I should really bow out, but just the ONE song? pretty please?

#53 Funny, PSL - reading your post just coincided with a hay fever attack here too...

    :'o(

I hate getting lost, it makes me quite panicky if I don't know where I'm going. I have satnav now, but I always used to try and memorise the route if I was going somewhere on my own and had nobody to give me directions. Once I got completely lost in the centre of Birmingham (I'm just a country girl). I ended up going down a one way street, and was faced with an ambulance coming towards me, lights blazing. Scary...

I'm hesitating about sending it around work as they are by and large tight bas*&rds (no offence, but they are!) and it would just be bad timing what with my ex-boss passing a week ago today with the same medical condition as my son's father.

#86 apparently I can do a very good Siobhan Sharpe impression - rambling on without achieving any actual pertinent information, in other words. So says Mr e.

    Hi and welcome Wendy... *waves*

A bike racer friend of ours (male) has the nickname Wendy... it's not you is it? ;o)

#87 Did you see the pre-recorded message from the 2012 Head of Deliverance at the end of last night's One Show? Brilliant, as usual! Apparently it should have been shown on Friday, but they ran out of time.

  • Comment number 90.

    #89 No I didn't - I am presuming it wasn't Hugh B?!

'they ran out of time' says it all really, proper TV in the 'Nationwide' standard of boadcasting excellence....

#90 It was the lovely Hugh B aka "Head of Deliverance"!

    #72 Hello wendy, welcome aboard!

#78 Do you remember "Absolutely!", a comedy sketch show with Jack Docherty and Morwenna Banks (amongst others)?

#82 Mo, I assumed that would be the case, but it wouldn't be fair for you to be poised in the virtual blocks, while I'm in a meeting!

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Yes, I will stay & chat.

#78 for a moment I wondered how you knew I was a grumpy old woman …

    #88 nope, definitely a girl

Why has it taken me so long to post? I was at the Wittertainment Robert Redford thing, it was fantastic and it made me decide to get more involved I’ve always read Simon’s bit but not the comments, I tend to avoid the “bottom half of the internet”. Simon’s warm remarks about you should have made me realise I had nothing to fear.

A warm welcome to all new bloggers. I have just about finished my first 12 months probation here and have to admit it is a very friendly place to be.

Does anyone remember the comedy series 'Coupling' from a few years ago? Brilliant sitcom a bit like a British 'Friends' but funnier and bluer. Anyway, one of the characters, called Susan, used the word 'apparently' rather a lot. I do it sometimes to annoy Mr B...

    ;o)

Welcome Wendy - how exciting to be at Wittertainment live with Robert Redford - it sounded as though it was great fun.

    Hello also to Skizz

Jennie Wren - poor you :/ I've no excuses, but my garden is becoming increasingly weed-infested. I need to finish creosting the fence this week after work but I'm taking my inspiration from you and I'll do the weeding this weekend!

#61 that must have been scary indeed Deebee. I managed to get lost yesterday and ended up going through a ford, as my car is quite 'low' I was panicking the whole way through that it was going to choke and die any moment!

#96 I love 'Coupling' Deebee - a work of genius from Stephen Moffat - I have the DVDs and watch them regularly.

I had a colleague at a previous school who used the word "actually" all the time. Frustrating and funny in equal measure; infamously in one 2 minute monologue he used it 27 times!

#93 I heard the podcast of that show, Wendy - it was very good. Although they did seem rather nervous that Robert Redford would turn up on time, as he has a reputation for being late.

#97 A friend of ours wrote off a nearly-new BMW (other makes of car also available...) by driving it through a ford and flooding the engine.
