Farewell Robin

Simon Mayo|09:46 UK time, Monday, 21 May 2012

And a good Monday to you all. Hope the weekend was fabulous, particularly the south western bloggers who have been catching the flame as it comes to a street near you. Family affairs dominated here (and not talking about football thank you very much).

And very sad news overnight about Robin Gibb. It wasn't a surprise given how ill he has been but it is always a shock to hear the obituaries when they roll. The Bee Gees songs have been with us for so long and over so many musical styles that I wonder if their place in pop history is fully appreciated. An astonishing back catalogue. Paul Gambaccini said "Everyone should be aware that the Bee Gees are second only to Lennon and McCartney as the most successful songwriting unit in British popular music.

"What must also be said is Robin had one of the best white soul voices ever. He was singing lead on his first number one when he was 17, that was Massachusetts.Their accomplishments have been monumental. Not only have they written their own number one hits, but they wrote huge hit records for Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Celine Dion, Destiny's Child, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, the list goes on and on."

I met him a few times and enjoyed telling him how I loved "Saved By The Bell' enough to buy the single when I was a kid and we talked about the extremely bizarre b-side 'Mother and Jack'. His 1983 song Juliet which Ken played last week was always a terrific piece of 80s pop (with a terrible video) and Robin was as baffled as anyone that it wasn't a huge hit.

Today we welcome Midge Ure to the show- Ultravox are back! The album and single are both called "Brilliant" and full of moody synth and Midge-ness. Top bloke too so welcome back Midge.

And tunes today for the Queen visiting the Ch***ea FLOWER SHOW please. You know what you have to do.

Have a fragrant and spirited Monday. See you after 5

Marillion's Chelsea Monday is too long. Hurrah says everybody.

I wonder if Her Majesty actually likes having to go to the Chelsea Flower Show every year, presumably on the same day every year? And to all the other things that she has to do on the same day every year. It would drive me batty.

  • Comment number 47.

I took my mum to the Chelsea flower show a few years ago as she had always wanted to go....very disapointed, it was too crowded to linger and look at the winning gardens. The whole show much much smaller than the TV coverage portrays. The courtyard gardens were the size of my understair cupboard and the main gardens about the size of my kitchen!

    SHIVERING IN MAY!!

  • Comment number 51.

I couldn't believe the Chelsea Flower Show is on this week as it seems quite early, or is it always on in May? I suppose that although it's very early for some plants and flowers, the exhibitors bring/force everything on very early.

  • Comment number 52.

LITTLE GREEN by Joni Mitchell might be a nice change from her Chels*a morning tune and avoid the DT dude having to say the word..

    FRUIT TREE: NICK DRAKE

  • Comment number 53.

For all the exhibitors who have to get all their plants to perfection at the same time

    COME TOGETHER - THE BEATLES.

Never been to Chelsea Flower show but did go one year to the show at Hampton Court. Came away with lots of ideas but as we only had a town house with a courtyard garden at that time it was difficult to put many ideas into practice.

We now have a cottage on the edge of a village and have started realising our dreams of creating an English Country garden, albeit in a foreign land.

  • Comment number 55.

BLOOD ROSES by the eccentric Tori Amos

#47 took my mum too, 2003 I think, yes, it was v busy and the show gardens were Soooo small - AND I dropped my camera in the portaloo (a real wet film camera, esp afterwards..) but it was lovely. I was inspired. To go home and gravel my pocket handkerchief of lawn, put in big pots, blousy flowers, garden lights and a water feature. I think the garden sold my house for me actually!

I can't go again though, until I win the lottery and buy a house with a bigger garden. The current one is a wrap around the edges of the house type of garden - not much planting room, it would be too depressing.

Oo and I did see the gawjus Diarmuid Gavin - my Mr Darcy of the gardening world.

Shona, I remember Simon playing Dead Flowers for you a while back and I've never heard it since, so perhaps you will be lucky again today!

Like you, we're also enjoying the warm sunshine and it's nice for our resident actors Colin and Nicole who were still filming when I walked my dogs along the beach this morning, with the sea looking nice... a newspaper headline said at the weekend... 'Firth on the Forth!' This old postbox is outside the house they're filming in so they have a nice sea view from the windows!

  • Comment number 80.

Just listened to the Paul Buchanan interview with Bob. Came across as just about as unpretentious and self-effacing as it's possible to be. Thoroughly likable.

  • Comment number 81.

    Woohoo, what an exciting day!

The 'flame' was very well received by the good folk of West Somerset.

I collected my Daughter from her year 2 uni digs today and she is home now until September.

We walked the mile and a half across the fields of many colours to the nearest viewing point. It seemed odd really. We followed the steam railway line, two trains passed by as we walked, then through three fields full of cows, some milking and ready to be milked too, the others, with boisterous bullocks, inquisitive and a little cheeky really!

Then past more fields beautifully coloured blue with linseed, quite stunning.

Finally from the peace and tranquility of the walk, we arrived at the main road to the most amazing scene!

Carhampton, is not a place that any of you have probably heard of, but today and for one day only, it was a place filled with a magical spirit. Hundreds of people, all waiting patiently for the arrival of 'our' olympic torch.

I dont think I have ever seen such a huge police presence, but appreciate, that traffic needs to be managed carefully, we do have an influx of around 7000 visitors to the nearby camp on a Monday.

There was a great air of days gone by and locals were allowing people to sit on their lawns to obtain the best view possible.

I am just so pleased, that we managed to be there, I hope other bloggers share the occasion too, as it makes it way around our great country.

Happy Days. Happy days indeed :)

Oh forgot to say, with the excitement of it all, failed miserably to get a decent pic of the flame. One of those moments to be seen and experienced, rather than captured on film!

  • Comment number 82.

Lovely Sal and what a great pic you painted in my mind, Glad you enjoyed the whole experience.

I'm feeling like a bit of a bookend at the moment - can join you all in the morning and the evening with nothing in between;(

Goodness knows what and whose pc I'll be on in the morning. All this flooding out of office is getting in the way of blogging;(

  • Comment number 83.

Flaming Sal, it sounds like you had an enjoyable experience watching the olympic torch passing by. If an artist friend of mine read your message she would soon have painted a nice watercolour picture of pretty coloured fields, cows and trains!

When the torch passes through several Edinburgh streets ending up at the Castle on 13th June, there's a free concert at the Castle for 7,500 people which includes Emeli Sande, who seems to be very popular at the moment.

'Flooding out of the office' Shona? Not water, I hope!!!

  • Comment number 84.

  • Comment number 85.

I wonder why that annoying man was carrying the torch when there must have been many locals who would liked to have carried it? He's irritating enough on The Voice... always texting through the programme and he's texting again whilst carrying an olympic torch... he probably sleeps with his phone on the pillow!

  • Comment number 86.

Haha, the Points West presenters did say, that some of us over the age of 30 would ask Will I WHO?

So many thrilled youngsters in Taunton, all very excited about seeing him.

I am led to believe he was tweeting, something that I am not familiar with.

We all have our foibles :)

  • Comment number 87.

Will-I-am irritates me on The Voice and the only thing I like about him, is this song...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aSbKvm_mKA

  • Comment number 88.

Good Morning and what a beautiful one too.

Now who is going to take over the torch next?

  • Comment number 89.

88 - Sal - morning to you on this beautiful sunny day. The torch arrives near to here at lunchtime today and I will be there with Mini-Hoffs to experience the event. Not sure that it will be as beautifully described as your day yesterday though!

  • Comment number 90.

    Good Morning All

LOL at Will. I. am. There is a very funny person on Tw**ter called I Am Ken Barlow who tweets the funniest lines when The Voice is on if you are interested. It keeps me amused during the show anyway.

The torch is going to be busy on 13th June Flo as it is coming here that day too.

The canteen above our office flooded us out - something to do with a pipe not being securely fitted to a coffee machine. I was wondering about Coffeebuzz's whereabouts that weekend?

  • Comment number 91.

#87 #90 The Voice irritates me full stop. Thankfully BBC4 on Saturday nights at 9pm at least provides an oasis of decent viewing with whatever Scandinavian cirme drama is running at the time.

  • Comment number 92.

Good morning! And what a gorgeous one it is too. We have been told to down tools early today and go enjoy it. What's a girl to do ;-)

I like Will.I.Am. And I like him tweeting through The Voice. He tweets pictures of the set from a perspective you don't get from tv. And given where we are these days, why not. But I don't understand why he was given the flame to carry and agree with Florence on that point.

Have a great day following the flame, Hoffs. Sounds like it was a great day from Sal's post.

Hope you get back to your own office soon, Sal.

    Good Morning All

Quiet day on the blog yesterday - it's not often that we don't get over 100 posts. Well done to all who got menshes, especially Suzieeee who is off the OSM bench at last ;o) Must admit I thought the oldies were a bit predictable. We've had similar themes before with the same songs played. And there were lots of other really good suggestions.

I enjoyed the show otherwise though. Midge Ure was good value, and I thought Paul G's words on Robin Gibb were quite moving.

Sal, what a sight that must have been! Whatever you think of the Olympics (and I know not everyone is interested) it's so nice to have some news that's not all doom and gloom for a change. Hoffs, hope you and Mini Hoffs enjoy seeing the torch today.

I'm sure there were other things I was going to say, but I can't remember what they were. And my toast is getting cold.

See you on the next blog.

#92 The last comment was obviously meant for Shona, not Sal, but I'm sure you are all smart enough to work that out :-)

cBzz, have a suggestion for you for 12th June. Why don't we meet at 8am ish (UK time) on the A90 at Portlethen to do a virtual handover of the torch ;-)

    Morning all

Quiet day on the blog yesterday, but all a bit frantic round these parts.

Flaming Sal - sounds like you had a fab day yesterday, what a great experience. And Hoffs get to see it today. The torch has already passed through my alternative stomping ground early this morning, and the pictures on the BBC website look lovely in the sunshine. Wish I could have been there. Will have to wait now until July.

    On with the show.

#75, #77 I missed the second half of the show last night (walking the dog in the park in the glorious sunshine - hurrah!). Will have to listen back - thanks for the mensh and playing my choon Simon!

Morning everyone... lovely again it is, too!

Ken, I think The Voice must irritate a lot of people because seemingly it loses viewers every week and dropped another three million this week.

Re Will-I-Am carrying the torch, I heard Chris Evans say this morning that he wondered why Will was carrying it when it's supposed to be carried by members of the public, not celebs!

Shona, if you look on the torch map, it looks like it will also be in Fife on 13th June, so a lot of miles will be covered that day.

    Blimey, a very quiet blog!

    Good morning lovelies,

Apologies for absinthe yesterday, one of THOSE days :oS

Some great floral choices. I didn't catch the show but hope you were well represented!

I quite like Will.I.Am too and think he is a breath of fresh air as far as those kind of talent shows go but my mind did boggle when I saw him with the torch... whose crazy idea was that?

Anyhoo, the sun's shining and there must be a new blog by now .....
