42. Inevitably.
Gosh we are lucky. A real warm one coming. We are experiencing a 'col' apparently. This, according to the TImes is a weather system that sits at the crossroads between two high pressure and two low pressure systems. We are in the slack area in between apparently and slackness (in weather systems if not children) doesn't last long. Anyway, it'll be fun while it lasts and this morning's frantic struggle to find a cap for child 3 to wear was very similar to the scramble for the ice-scraper when the first blast of winter kicks in. We will always be unready and we are ready for that.
So Ken is off to Baku and will perform his normal heroics for Eurovision. Caught some of the 'semi-final' last night on BBC3 - it's like an early warning system. Ken was watching and will now know that, even though it'll be midnight when they start (!) the temperature in the new arena will be hotter than the sun and even though Scott Mills was only wearing a vest, he was a virtual river for most of the show. Ken's dinner jacket will need many perforations I feel.
So today we talk The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with two of the original radio cast Simon Jones, who played Arthur Dent and Geoff McGivern who played Ford Prefect. They are part of a new stage show called 'The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy Radio Show, Live!' And that's a lot of punctuation. I think I missed the first broadcasts of the radio show in 1978 but I remember listening to it in 1980 at University and marvelling at it's originality (not that I spoke like that then). I've loved the series and the work of Douglas Adams ever since and look forward to some Hitchhiker chat from 6. Wear your towel with pride and choose a HITCHHIKING oldie while you're at it.
Have a Vogon poetry free Wednesday, see you after 5.

I hope I'll have time to pack up my stuff before the big office move at the weekend!
I am unreliably informed that the coffee machine may not be moved straight away, so I'm making contingency plans...a manual espresso maker, a 'plunger' and an over-the-cup filter. Should tide me over for a few weeks!

#18 Blimey! that was a good innings for your Great-auntie - and one of 15 children!?
Seems to be folks either drop off this mortal coil at 60 ish or hang on until twenty plus years later - much of it is in the genes, apparently. Maybe you have it too, Zoe? I'm ok with being here at 90+ as long as I can deal with my own 'toilet' needs and speak!
Mr e's paternal great-grandmother had 21 live births - only ('only'!!) 17 survived - and of those, only one was male. Talk about hen-pecked. Apparently there was nowt to do on the farm where they lived! (reminds me of the Monty Python sketch 'Every sperm is sacred (will that get modded?) oh and his grandmother, the oldest of those 17 only had ONE child herself. That speaks volumes I think.
Re Theme, as I was given the benfit of 'Road to Nowhere' yesterday - despite not suggesting it (sorry to those who did :-0 )- feel like bowing out after 2 days on the trot of menshes - (following lots of evenings supping chilled vino on the OSM bench) - however, I saw the theme on facecloth and could not resist sticking my 2 pennorth in, as you do:

#67 we are hosting our Eurovision party this Saturday, getting excited now!
there's a sweepstake (winner takes it all!) Ajerbajian food, lots of vino collapso - love it.
Off out for a bit of sun in the parks in a wee while, hope you all get to have some too, while it lasts!

Only 21C here today, which after yesterday's 26C is a bit of a let down ;-). Nice to get a wee walk up to the local Thai for lunch though. We were celebrating passing a milestone at work. Was originally planned for a few weeks ago. Needless to say we can't remember what it was.
I never got into the HHGTTG and don't know anything about it to be honest.

I did poop by earlier but didn't have anything to contribute theme wise. Feel a little cheeky now (as I haven't poopped by in quite a few days) but I was wondering if any of yous in Blogland can help a lass out?
I live on a street that has a slight slope. When it rains really heavily or consistently, like it did a few weeks back, water comes off next doors patio and pools outside my back door. Now I realise that with it being rain and all they are not obliged to do owt but they further accerbated this by turning on the tap of their overflowing water barrel and just letting it run out. This annoyed me somewhat and in the puring rain, I went next door and told them what was occuring and suggested that they put a hose on their water barrel tap and feed it onto the garden to prevent it collecting outside my door. He didn't even go and turn it off!
They have now informed me that they intended to jetwash said patio today and there is nothing they can do to prevent their mucky water from collecting onto my side. The fence is mine and I suppose I could put up a new fence with gravel boards to stop the water from invading but the fence I have is still adequate and I'm not sure why I should go to all that expense over something that is not my fault. If you know what I mean.
Or am I just being...not sure what I'm being. Should I just put up and shut up?

It's maybe not your fault, but it is causing you problems. Can you fit a covered gutter, or a "soakaway". I know these are costly, but they will stop the water puddling at your door. Water collecting so close to your foundations probably isn't a good thing.

#76 Tricky situation, JPA. I firmly believe there should be a bit of give-and-take with neighbours - it sounds like it's not their fault that the water's ending up on your patio, but they are not exactly helping the situation by using the jetwash. And why is it necessary to jetwash the patio anyway? On the other hand, I'm not sure there is anything you can do about it, other than what your husband has suggested. But it does seem like a lot of work. Maybe he could get the neighbours to help him relay the slabs?
We have a neighbour issue as well. Our next door neighbour's front garden is currently full of weeds, some of which are about 2 ft high. Not only is it an eyesore, but we're worried about the weeds encroaching on our garden.

Yet, as you say why should you...their water barrel is clearly poorly sited - the resulting run off clearly needs to be led into a drain proper - maybe they have somewhere else thay can site a water barrel?
Just need some chat over maybe a glass of vino in the garden?

Yes, they could be a bit nit picky and complain about stuff that seemed like complaining for the sake of complaining but we got on alright until the dreaded scaffolding incident! After that it has been decidedly frosty and I am in no mood to be accomodating to them anymore.
I have put up wi' their water run off for years, in the interest of good neighbourly relations, but I am not prepared to put up wi' it anymore. I know it sounds a little like tit for tat but I'm afraid that is where we are at.

I wanted to do exactly the same thing this year with the addition of people drawing a country from those taking part and coming in that country's national garb plus a dish from there too. Mrs RP said that's fine (in a voice that means 'it isn't') as long as I host the party properly (getting drinks for everyone, taking coats blah blah). I soon realised that if I wanted to have my downloaded scorecard on clipboard on knee then I have to have the 'party' as an internal event with just me and the kids invited.
It's only in this country that we look disdainfully down the contest. On mainland Europe they still love it and feel its relevant. I think we have some political-voting-in-recent-times sour grapes going on there. Also we've only had a couple of decent songs in the past 10 years - Pete Waterman's effort a couple of years ago was excrutiating and fully deserving of joint last place, as was Scooch.
The Hump has a bit of quality about him and I think he's destined for a top 5 finish.

I liked them when they did X Factor, I thought they were very entertaining, and undeserving of all the nasty comments and bad press. They are sweet lads, and I wish them all the best. Mind you, I quite like Engelbert's song too (despite it being played to death) so I hope both he, and Jedward do well.
#70 Suzie - It is my nan who was one of 15 children, although not all of them survived past birth. My great-grandma had 3 sets of twins (all boys) but only one boy from each set survived :( They didn't have the medical care back then that we take for granted now. My own twins were born 2 and a bit months prematurely, and twin 2 had to be revived and ventilated at birth. I suppose back in my great-grandma's day, either one or both of my twins would have died too.
#91 Rostronposkett - Scooch! I'd forgotten about them, they were truly awful. We have had some very dire entries over the years, but then so have many other countries. It's a harmless bit of fun really, and often very amusing, as the stage costumes and strange performances can lead you to wonder if you're drink has been spiked! :D
