Gentlemen. No Knees.

Simon Mayo|09:20 UK time, Thursday, 24 May 2012

Not much sleep to be had in a hot house. Fans on, windows open. Then at 5am, everything is too cool. Plus the new calculation - what's the maximum you can leave a window open before the foxes realise they can sneak in and spread their nastiness? Three inches tops is my guess. Constant vigilance. No surrender.

Wardrobe issues today. Shorts have been examined and rejected - you can't really get away with it. The statuesque amongst us (declare yourselves now!) will look splendid of course but for the rest of us, we wait for our holidays or the weekend for the great unveiling. Plus it's child 2's speech day today so I must make at least a bit of an effort. You can't applaud the Year 12's carpentry prize with your knees showing. It's just not right.

So. Loved the Hitchhiker's yesterday and I think many others did too. Douglas Adams is much missed and as one of our listeners pointed out, the ipad is pretty much what the Guide was. Predicted by DA in 1978!

Today Nigel performs wonders with an aubergine - a melanzane on the way tonight. And oldies please from the 40th anniversary of the GRAVELLY HILL INTERCHANGE. Yes the always entertaining SPAGHETTI JUNCTION was opened 40 years ago. BBC News says...The sprawling network of carriageways at junction 6 of the M6 connects the A38(M) Aston Expressway into central Birmingham. It was given its more popular name by newspaper reporter Roy Smith, who said that from the sky it looked like spaghetti on a plate. Mystifying some motorists, its numerous carriageways, supported by more than 500 concrete columns, follow the line of the local canal and river network on elevated sections. Probably the most famous set of roads in the UK. Time to serenade Spaghetti J.

Have a cool and well-ventilated Thursday. See you after 5.

    Good Morning All;

I'll join you in the sleep-deprived club, Simon. A combination of heat and a restless twin 2, does not a good night's sleep make.

I've just given the mister a buzz cut, he can't be doing with too much hair when it's hot. Mind you, he looks more and more like big foot with each passing year! ;D

I don't know if I can go as far as shorts either, I may go to cropped trousers, my calves are shamefully unshaven though :-S

Morning Simon, team, NYM and overheated bloggers,

Sitting comfortably at my desk in shorts, I feel no shame. But Speech Day would definitely be pushing the boundaries.

So, today started very early just after sunrise and I had a one hour walk-jog along the Thames before the road roar kicked in - just beautiful, and, although not a bird watcher, I saw herons and swans and parakeets. They weren't frightened by my shorts either.

I agree with MCW - seems like the feems this week are all cousins (or second cousins once removed) of each other.

So, here goes with Spaghetti Junction oldies"

    LOST! - Coldplay

    LOST WEEKEND - Lloyd Cole

Morning Greetings Ter The Mayo & ALL...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

Mayo Man - Yes that is something that VERy annoys me - The way short short are out for blokes presently!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fashion is ter wear shorts that are long.... Aka nearly trousers but with the cut ter just below the knees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It makes most blokes look like Freddie Star in the german sketch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yet if yer wear too short shorts.... It's rather camp and 'eading for the otherside.... aka The Winton/ Norton side of things!!!!!!!!!

Which is a shame as ave goot VERY good thigh muscles due to alotta cycling a did from a child and still do noe aged 39 and a 'alf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ter me a think it could be the likes of Trinny & Suzzana introducing these new fashions!!!!!!!

A mean who decides what is and whats out!!!!!!!!!!

Us blokes are 'aving ter cover up more and more..... And if yer don't it's camp!!!!!!!!!

It's the same with the speedos on the beach!!!!!!!

We are being supressed by feminism gone too far a feel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My advice Mayo...... Enjoy the 'eat of the monet and go ter do the Drivetime Gig in yer speedos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    'ope this 'elps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PPPS Liverpool of which is me 'ome city - Recently they purposely put in difficult one way systems all in th eaid of trying ter keep cars out of the city/ use public transport!!!!!!!!!

Hello - really quick poop in. Meant to be digging but have stopped for a quick coffee break. Spaghetti junction? Really bad memory for me, which would be perfectly encapsulated in:

COMING AROUND AGAIN - Carly Simon

This is because when I was little, my mum and I had been to visit my godmother, got lost, spent what seemed like hours going around and around and backwards and forwards on a really high up road (spaghetti junction) and then my mum got so flustered, she crashed into the back of the car in front. The police came. Very exciting for a seven year old, but with hindsight, not for my mum!

Will have a think whilst I'm in the flowerbed....

Also like Jilly's Squeeze suggestion and will second, third and fourth Harry's Swindon Magic Roundabout comment. Very tempting to shut your eyes, put your food on the accelerator and hope that you come out the other side unscathed.

Shorts? I'm wearing them today but only because I'm in the garden. Still suffering from lack of suncream at the torch relay on Tuesday. My three worder for today would be: ATTRACTIVE T-SHIRT TAN

Late on parade - so have just caught up on yesterday's late blog entries - and how can I do this without looking as though I'm trying to take the credit for *everything* ... sigh ... like a troublesome attention-seeking child. LOL

Was waiting for Paul of Sheffield to say something but, like me, probably couldn't remember the exact details. Following Chickster's lead I had a look back.

21st March 2011 produced an excellent chatty blog [we had B&B and Toots as regulars back then] with all sorts of issues covered ... Paul decided to anagramatisize our blog names which was very funny. Who could forget 'Erotic Tat' !

    Then I posted this ..

There is no way to change them after you have posted and you'll find that we are very laissez-faire when it comes to such errors, unless of course they are amusing and/or we have our pendantic (sic) hats on, then you might get a little good natured teasing ;)

In fact, several of our blogpoppet's typos have now become an intrinsic part of language in the blog as #62 PoS demonstrates and you will come to notice if you poop by regularly ;)

EL CONDOR PASTA - SIMON AND GARFUNKEL

Thanks for the explanation about Lord Ammo, Katy. I joined the blog in July last year so never really knew the reason for the name.

    Catch you later

Hey - no problem Harry - it's hardly surprising given the nature of *that* particular blog. Worth a look I'd say ..

#64 I had forgotten about 'Erotic Tat' Katy - may have to do a name change, that wil really ensure I don't get a mention!

#70 Katy, I've just had a quick look and I've come over all nostalgic.

We sure covered some topics back then :0)

And here's the missing 'l' - must have floated aaway in the fragrant breeze!

#65 We're going to try the A*di alternative tomorrow - it's half the price and supposed to taste the same!

#70 etc Thanks Katy (and apologies for confusing you with PoS and B&B), I knew the anagrams had been before the Royal Wedding but didn't get time to look back. Work just keeps getting in the way ;-). Although my meeting went much better than I expected and my halo is shining brightly alongside Shona's. I did have a read of the 28th April blog and I'm not there :-(. I may have been on holiday and may indeed be the pal Deebee referred to in one of her posts. Memory failure Part II.

*goes off to reminisce at blog days gone by*

    Afternoon All

Had a good meeting this morning. I could tell you some interesting tales about employment law... and I'm now back at my desk (briefly). I did manage to tweet the following earlier:

ROAD TO HELL by Chris Rea

YOU SPIN ME RIGHT ROUND by Dead or Alive

    UP THE JUNCTION by Squeeze

although I won't actually get to hear the show today.

#56 Wendy, I'm with you on men in shorts - especially if they have thin, pale legs. And the sandals and socks combo is never a good look either. I don't mind short sleeves - my curious aversion is armpits, so I can't stand seeing men wearing vests. Apologies to all our male bloggers...

    ;o)

Hugs to Julia40 for your poorly lass, and to Autumn_Gale for not getting the job.

#70 Katy - Gosh, talk about the ghosts of blogs past! I have rarely revisited any old blogs, but some of them do make for very interesting reading.

Maybe we could go all aristocratic, or firmly remain one of the great unwashed, for the upcoming Jubilee?

#56 Wendy - I don't mind men wearing shorts, or short-sleeved shirts, or indeed vests (Deebee) for that matter. Better that, than those chaps who have no compunction about letting it all hang out (on the top half I mean!) Now if the chap has washboard abs, that's one thing, but most fellows who discard their shirts seem to be more like Homer Simpson!

#76 Deebee - I agree that some armpits can be off-putting, especially those that look like they have overused feather dusters stored under there... :O

#64. You mean it WASN'T me? I thought I'd come up with it whilst smearing marmalade on me pins. ;0)

Good afternoon all - late today - busy doing nothing! Weather is glorious but bit too hot for me. I'm not a hot weather gal - fair skin and red head, I resemble a lobster if I stay out too long in the midday sun. Not that I'm complaining - it's lovely to feel warm and not have to be bundled up in layers of clothes - if I can find a bit of shade and a breeze I'm ok.

    Very late but

Men and shorts - mmm. Ok as long as not accompanied by sandals and socks. Our postman often wears shorts and it's not an unpleasant sight in the mornings.

    #80 and further back ..

And I'm now about to proclaim my unbiased and nauseatingly worthy opinion on men and their apparel ...

... I don't mind what men wear - or don't wear - so long as they have a kind nature and great sense of humour.

Oh yes - they must also cover their bits. I don't care to see the angle of the dangle.

    Hehehehehe

#77 Zoe, it's worse than that. I even have an aversion to smoothly depilated ladies' underarms. Don't ask me why... I'm seeking therapy for it...

    ;o)

#78 #81 Someday, somebody's going to have to explain that to me. But maybe not here and not now...

#77 Zoe, I can feel myself becoming more and more French the closer we get ............... in fact I think the change is almost complete :0)

#83 Deebs - think Blackadder ... Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry etc. [comedy heroes of mine]

I suppose it's just a daft way of exclaiming "Well I never ..."

Well - something my something with something and call me something - if it's not ....!

Mine is based on something my brother used to say - only he didn't smear his shins with marmalade and he also called himself something else that I can't remember now.

#82 Katy - Despite my earlier criticism of some men's apparel, I am all for folk being comfortable, whatever that entails. Mind you, when you've had the misfortune to be pressed against some fellow's sweaty beer belly on public transport, or other confined spaces, you might not be quite so forgiving! *Ick*

#83 Deebee - Oh dear, this time of year must be a nightmare for you then, it's armpits as far as the eye can see! :O

#84 Harry Le Vivaneau - Vive La Revolution, indeed! ;-)

#82 With regard to angling dangling etc., a word of warning Katy.. do not watch Bingo's recommended video clip #33 which is a little ditty called Sexy and I Know It by a group named something which the wombles won't let me post but is an common acronym these days of laughing your ass (sic) off with an added F. It's an eye-opener for sure 8-S

  • Comment number 88.

#82 LOL!! Yes of course - I would think that goes without saying (or maybe in some cases it does need to be said...). Comfort and decency are the most important factors...

    ;o)

#85 Ah okay - got it...

#86 I have learned to avert my eyes...

I'm slipping away now - got to get home, walk and feed the dogpoppet (he won't get much of the first, unfortunately) change, and be on a train for the Big Smoke at quarter to 5. Enjoy the rest of your day!

#82 Katy, I've just finished ready that blog and I'm starting to feel guilty as well as nostaligic.

I always used to say 'cheerio' at about 4.40 and that was Julia39/40's cue to put the dinner on. I'm wondering if Mister Julia 39/40 (38/39 actually) or her poor children have eaten since I stopped doing it? ;0)

  • Comment number 93.

#89/90/91 - the video made me laugh out loud when I watched it, especially the wiggle wiggle wiggle bit! I can't say I love the song but it made me smile and it is good to know that there are still some people who don't take themselves too seriously :D

#93 Oh Jilly that video really made me laugh, too. Like Katy, I just had to have a peek.

The wiggle, wiggle bit is indeed the highlight! Lol

From earlier, sorry you didn't get the job AG. Let's hope there's something bigger & better out there for you.

Shona, I hope you're not plugged in anywhere near water. Any hope of getting back into your office soon?

Reading the blog from last year was quite taxing. Got very confused as to who was who. Still trying to work out who I was at that time. Did amuse myself reading a post & agreeing wholeheartedly with it only to realise it was one of mine. I guess that's a good thing ;-)
