Best days of our lives etc...

Simon Mayo|09:51 UK time, Friday, 25 May 2012

This clear blue sky thing is quite fun still really. The jumpers from a few days ago seem so heavy and lumpy and unnecessary. We really don't need that kind of thing anymore. We are trim and slimline and perky here. How about you?

No shorts on view at Speech Day, I'm delighted to say. Even as temperatures in the hall rocketed and sweat poured from all pores, standards were maintained. This was in no small part due to the Chairman of Governors being Mr Justice Leveson himself. As he gazed at us all, the feeling that we were under examination was impossible to ignore. If we hadn't switched our phones off already, we certainly did as his Lordship's steely gaze swept the hall. Top man Hugh Dennis gave out the prizes and we all headed for the pub/revision/land of nod.

2 show day starts with 5 Live and movies and Charlize Theron. In 'Snow White and The Huntsman' she plays the wickedy-witchy queen and gets to say the 'Mirror mirror' line quite a few times. She is great in it and possibly one of the most beautiful women I have interviewed. This will not distract me from my task, especially as she is in a lovely hotel and I am in the studio. Which is a shame but maybe just as well.

Then to radio 2 and a wonderful ARF which really needs to start with THE BEST HOT WEATHER TUNE EVER RECORDED (and that Steve won't have played a few minutes before. I realise that makes things tricky). By this time, shorts are de rigueur of course.

Have a nimble and light-footed Friday, see you after 2&5.

  • Comment number 19.

    Good morning everyone,

'Tis another beautiful day in this neck of the woods.

Dougal, you've beaten me to my choice... was going to request Summer in The City by the Loving Spoonful, great record. So although I definitely second that one I've had to think of something else.... how about... Ha! Now I've finally thought of one ... about half an hour later, I see that Dougal has picked that one too!!! Summer of '69, Bryan Adams, was my second choice.. great minds eh.

Oh well. Nevermind, I'll bow out of the ARFO mensh chasing. You can't miss what you've never had ;)

    Have a good day all.

#3 Didn't see your post, Zoe, despite having a quick scan through before posting mine. This is why I prefer a "free for all Friday" where there's less likelihood of duplicates.

    'Rat Trap' Boomtown Rats

    'One Way or Another' Blondie

'Sweet Gene Vincent' Ian Dury and Blockheads

Have a good day one and all

  • Comment number 27.

#9 et al - I wouldn't worry about duplicating song suggestions, there'll be plenty of that anyway when you throw Facebook and Twitter into the mix. It's nice to be the only one to come up with a particular song, but as others have said, when there's a theme, then it's inevitable that lots will choose the same ones. Simon has given multiple credit for ARFOs in the past, although he did only pick one name for Nirvana the other week. Luck of the draw, I suppose, same as always! :-)

  • Comment number 28.

#1 No offence Sal, but I really hope that doesn't get played ;-)

    x

  • Comment number 29.

None taken. I have just looked up the top summer songs and its only number two on there Mo ;)

  • Comment number 30.

    Still looking for exclusivity:

    HOTTER THAN HELL by KISS

  • Comment number 31.

If only we didn't always have to have something LOUD!

Sunshine on my shoulders - John Denver.

    Such a lovely song.

  • Comment number 32.

I'm a lilttle surprised that no one has asked for:

    HOT LOVE by T. REX

But, by the time the 3 minute wait has elapsed, some one may have :0)

  • Comment number 33.

    Its all yours Harry :)

  • Comment number 34.

    Anything by the group Heatwave

  • Comment number 35.

#30 Harry, surely with exclusivity comes obscurity?

And with obscurity, comes reduced probability (of being played).

    Good song though.

I couldn't resist a few more summery type songs....

IT'S SUMMERTIME SUMMERTIME SUM SUM SUMMERTIME ~ The Jamies

ECHO BEACH ~ Martha and The Muffins

SAN FRANCISCO... WEAR SOME FLOWERS IN YOUR HAIR ~ Scott McKenzie

    BEACH BABY ~ First Class

THOSE LAZY HAZY CRAZY DAYS OF SUMMER ~ Nat King Cole

  • Comment number 37.

There's only one tune possible on such a lovely day:

    Mr Blue Sky - ELO

  • Comment number 38.

#37 Fenners, I think Summer set Sal might agree with you!!!

  • Comment number 39.

A bit slow on the ARFO suggestions this morning - I wonder if the theme is holding a few people back who prefer a more 'open' field...

We had a great evening last night. London was very crowded and hot (thanks Simon for the 3 worder!). I met up with Mr B for a bite to eat before the show. 'One Man Two Guvnors' was very good - I won't say too much about it in case anyone else is planning to go, but I can definitely recommend it. It's a very funny and clever comedy - quite slapstick in places, but with some very good one-liners.

Can't tell you who was in the cast as we didn't bother with a programme, but I think one of them might have been Jodie Prenger and I recognised another (older) actor but don't know his name. James Cordon did the show originally, but apparently he's now moved it to Broadway.

    r

#31 I agree, Sal. I'd really like to suggest

SUMMER THE FIRST TIME by Bobby Goldsboro

It's a scorcher of a tune - in more ways than one - but it would never get played as an opener

    ;o)

  • Comment number 42.

#35 cBuzz, of course you're correct.

But, my selections may be obscure but I like to think they have a certain cachet :0D

And anyway, who cares, really? LOL

    Hi Simon and everyone

Boy it was hot last night, I had a session with the Personal Trainer and I still wore my KB hoody ( nuts or what!!) even though hot weather drains the energy for some reason I had the best session on the bag than ever! weird!

Anyone having Eurovision celebrations? I am off to a BBQ when my friends partner has volunteered to do everything and he had agreed to watch the Eurovision rather than the England friendly on the other side!!!

The Hump is 20/1 to win and Sweden is runaway favorite. Although I bet an Eastern European country wins as there seems to be hundreds in the final!!! Wish Jedward was banished there then we would not be subject to their idiotic behaviour!

And now for my HOT offering:

    1. HOT HOT HOT - Arrows

    2. BOYS OF SUMMER - Don Henley

    3. SUMMER OF 69 - Bryan "God" Adams

    Enjoy the sun.

#39 Deebee... pleased you enjoyed your night at the theatre. I really like Jodie Prenger, but have only seen her once as an excellent Nancy, in Oliver, a few years back. She often stands in for Paul O'Grady on a Sunday teatime on Radio 2 if he's on holiday or busy elsewhere and she always sounds so bubbly!

#56 cBuzz, found him on Sp*tify and I'm listening to Cocktails. On a first hearing I think I'm going to like it. Thanks for the 'heads up'.

Only new music I've been listening to this week is an American "country-rock" band out of Seattle called The Head and the Heart. Still too early to say if it's a keeper.

    Madonna - Holiday.

  • Comment number 60.

#56 #58 I'll have a listen when I get a chance :) My #FMR would be Beach House, I heard them on Later With Jools Holland, performing their song 'Myth', I love that song! I am now checking out the rest of the album 'Bloom', and some of their previous albums.

Hello. Quick poop. Will read back later but just wanted to say that I hope that whatever you are all doing this weekend, have a great time and am looking forward to reading about it!

Twitty that I am, I mis-read Mr Mayo's tweet about speech day speakers last night and thought that the Chairman of the Governors was Lord Leveson and that the prizes had been handed out by 'Les Dennis'. Hmmm

  • Comment number 64.

Oh, yes, message for KatyM wherever you are, which is another reason for coming onto the blog today - did you see that on Sun and Mon Tim Crouch is playing 'I Malvolio' at the Playhouse as part of the Arts Festival? Looks good.

Great tune suggestions too everyone. Good luck!

Here Comes The Summer – The Undertones

    Summertime – Nick Drake

Under the Boardwalk – The Drifters

  • Comment number 66.

I've been waiting for this film to come out - they filmed part of it in The Langdales and held a wrap party in the hotel at 'The Edge of The Water' next to my floating caravan . If we had known at the time we could have invited Ms Theron aboard for a 'Cheeky Vimto' although I am told she's actually a brown ale afficionardo. So - a classic summer song from my schooldays...Hmmmmm....

    SUGAR SUGAR - THE ARCHIES

Off to Scotland this weekend - I'll try & post as I go.

#67 CoffeeBuzz, I think it might have been Billie who gave iThingy the @JBG.

No new #FMR from me, but I'll check out the suggestions already made.

It's too lovely to be at work - there should be a law against it...

    ~X~

  • Comment number 70.

#67 cBuzz, I don't think JBG ever asserted his rights to Ithingy (©JBG) but Billie and I decided he should be recognised for inventing the name. I joined the blog in February 2011 and it was in use then so I guess it was first used sometime in 2010?

  • Comment number 71.

Afternoon all! No #FMR from me either. Have been shuffling again.

Shall be leaving work shortly. Which would be great but I'm heading to a hot & stuffy airport. But since I'm heading home for a week I'm all smiles. Looking forward to having a break from work and catching up with friends & family. Not expecting 25C back home so I'll settle for dry and fog-free.

#69 agree with your last statement, Deebee.

Hello again - been catching up with yesterday and today's posts.

Reading of school days brought back memories of my school days. My first primary school was a two class, village school with outside toilets, semi-open to the elements - no-one lingered there for long!

We played tag and whoever was chasing was 'it' and you couldn't be caught if you were 'home' - a designated wall or tree which you had to be touching.

Welcome to all of today's newbies - stay awhile....

All Hail the mighty BBC4 for giving us a new Swedish 2-part thriller tomorrow night in place of the nonsense on BBC1 :-)

From the picture I saw it looks like the guy who was the original Wallander in the Swedish made-for-TV movies which the Brannagh BBC version was based on (as opposed to the spin-off Swedish TV series) might be in it.

It seems much of the best TV is coming out of Scandinavia at the moment. I loved The Bridge.

Enjoyed my air-conditioned shopping in the heat. Not so much now I've returned home.

Just putting the slug slayer on the veg patch was quite enough thank you very much.

I went to 6 primary schools - being a child of the forces. Had two spells at a small village-style primary in North Lancashire when we were back on leave for longer than a month. That was the absolutely the best time where I learned about failines and tag and baggsy-ing things and kisschase etc. Also a novelty for me: those cute little bottles of milk at morning break.

    :^)

    Safe journey home Mo

    :^)

  • Comment number 83.

Katy, I only liked those cute little bottles of milk when they had ice inside them in winter, otherwise I couldn't drink milk then and I can't drink it now unless it's in custard, or milk shake that I like making with Angel Delight and ice cream and bananas if it's banana Angel Delight!

On Janice Long's programme one night, she started a discussion about sweets, ice creams, lollies etc from the 'olden' days and she kept calling ice-lollies, 'lolly-ices' and when some of us listeners told her that it didn't sound right, she said where she came from in Liverpool, it was 'lolly-ices', yet she called ice-cream the same as everyone else did.

  • Comment number 84.

#FMR Zoe, cBuzz, Harry, Ken etc - have to say ... I'm picking up most of my current newmusic faves from Later with Jools - although, credit where credit's due [;^)] my OH listens to far more 6Music than I do and he first got me interested in the likes of Alabama Shakes and Beach House ..

#64 Hoffs I, Malvolio - yes! In the Salberg Studio. We're really tied up over the weekend because of Salisbury Live! where pubs, clubs and venues across Salisbury will be playing host to the best in local musical talent from folk to rock, jazz to blues from Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. I do have a friend who works at the Playhouse and she can usually slip a couple of tickets my way, but I'll have to wait until Monday before I know.

[Flo - oh dear yes - I remember when it was warm the foil lid on the milk bottle used to swell up ... nope, I could never drink anything but ice cold milk. Even now.]

    *Foodie Post Alert*

Now here's the thing ... I divulged earlier this week that I didn't like mushrooms and fish/seafood but was prepared to cook it for people I like ... well

... tonight's the night for cooking generously and unselfishly for people that I really like.

I have some boneless rainbow trout fillets and wonder if any of you clever culinary wizards out there can suggest a way of cooking or a *sauce* I can make which will keep me happy, but is optional for everyone else.

Factoid: Rainbow Trout's proper name is Oncorhynchus Mykiss.

#82 & 83, I remember those days too, what about 40/40, and how about the tennis ball in the stocking with your back to the wall (oh err misses sounds very dirty). And stupid rhymes to go with it?

On the milk topic, how we used to fight to be milk monitor so you could make sure you weren't the one to get the bottle the birds had already been at.

Is it time to go home yet?

    #85......Katy............................a classic for you...............................

    Ingredients

    olive oil

    2 knobs butter

    2 whole trout

    plain flour

sea salt & freshly ground pepper

    1 lemon

    a handful of flaked almonds

2 heaped tbsp chopped fresh parsley

    Method

Heat a little oil and a knob of butter in a very large heavy-bottomed pan until melted.

Turn down the heat and cook the lightly floured and seasoned fish for about 4 mins each side, squeezing with lemon juice once sealed. Remove and place on individual plates.

Strain the oil from the pan and heat a little fresh oil with another knob of butter. Add the almonds and a little more lemon juice. Stir well and gently cook until coloured, adding the parsley at the end.

Then pour the sauce over the fish and serve with a simple salad on the side.

Dougal - that looks and sounds lovely. Thank you so much. I have all the ingredients in stock as well.

The only slight difference is I haven't got whole trout - just boned fillets. I wouldn't be able to cook them if I could see eyes and mouths and gills ...

I hate milk and did everything possible to avoid it when I was at school. I'm now like you Florence, and can take it in tea, custard or Angel Delight, but otherwise ...........ugh!

I know you stay up late Florence - did you catch any of the programme after Janice this week - Maria ???

We were woken up at 3.30 by a pair of foxes discussing the price of fish under our bedroom window last night and then we couldn't get back to sleep, so listened to the radio. She was not deemed to be one of our favourite standins - one amongst the many!! Where was Tim Smith - he usually stands in for Alex Lester, doesn't he?

    Thanks for the welcomes, folks.

I must say, I like Bingo's accent... and speedo's! Wasn't Bingo one of the Bannana Splits, the red one with the sunglasses & Cheshire Cat grin?

Quick dash in from the garden. I'm covered in spots! Just like measles, something out there doesn't agree with me.

Just loving this weather, its the most wonderful time of the year.

Now to have a read back. Hi Kalki, where do you figure that Bingo may come from, by 'reading' his accent? :)
