Budge up

Simon Mayo|09:13 UK time, Wednesday, 16 May 2012

That'll be the sun then. Sun glasses are here somewhere...

Morning to bloggers old and new. Another day with your Drivetime friends and a fine show on the way (though you'll be the judge of that). Last night was my first 'sit the family down and watch dad on tv' moment for many years. The consensus: good make-up and nice suit. This is an important step to pass as you all will realise. Also I was very pleased to receive a note from Ros Holness, Bob's daughter saying her father would have wished us well for the series, so she was doing it for him. Class.

Today we have live music for you with songs from Emeli Sande, one of the big new talents around in the UK. She's written for Alexandra Burke, Cher and Alicia Keys and her debut album 'Our Version of Events' has been top 5 since February. She has a fine voice as you'll hear tonight from 6.

And oldies today on being CRAMPED. New houses are too small. There is no room to swing a cat, store a vacuum cleaner or keep food. This is according to RIBA and they should know as the architects design these things. Or maybe they don't. So being SQUEEZED, PENT-UP and HEMMED-IN will do us for today. Over to you, pop-pickers.

Have a sun-kissed and balmy Wednesday. See you after 5

Good Morning Simon, team and fellow bloggers,

How lovely that Ros Holness sent you that note.

Funny you should be talking about small houses, last night Mr madchick and I went to look at a beautiful chocolate box cottage. It was very old, thatched and was like a dolls house inside. However, unlike modern houses it had a large garden and paddock.

I have tweeted my choices so apologies if I have duplicated any with my fellow blogsters:

Saddened to read on yesterday's blog that Zoe is leaving us. I do hope it isn't permanent and you'll come back very soon.

    Hi Simon and everyone

All up to date with Blockbusters now and I must say how good it is. Nice suit, nice staging and a refreshing change not having student contestants. I must make one observation though...how can that muslim couple say the Welsh guy was jammy having that Welsh question when they had a Ramadam question? Glad Ben from Wales stopped them in their tracks as they were EXTREMELY cocky and I loathe cockiness!!!

    Good morning,

Zoe, Don't even think of leaving us.x

Hoffs, Would like to second Jilly's suggestion yesterday of a South Bank walk during your day in London. It's just fab along there. Most of it's pedestrianised so you don't have to worry about london drivers dashing about all over the place.

You might also want to have a stroll through Middle Temple Inns of Court on the North bank. It's a calm, tranquil haven after the hustle and bustle of Fleet Street and Victoria Embankment. Ignore the "this isn't a public place sign" and just walk through with you head held high like you are on your way to a case conference with a top QC. Take a look at St Bride's church too. They sometimes have the most wonderful lunchtime recitals in there. All the choir members are professional singers who perform at Glyndbourne.

No song suggestions from me today.

    Have a good day.x

  • Comment number 40.

I do hate having to post short posts. Especially when I have so much to say...

    ;o)

#22 I try not to take life in general too seriously. Except when it is serious, of course...

#32 Have I missed something? Why would you do that?

On the subject of obscure TV channels and game shows Mr B phoned our Son yesterday evening, and he was watching Blockbusters. That's m'boy... ;o)

    *whispers* I wasn't watching it - I was out...

    ~X~

  • Comment number 41.

    and here's part 2...

#39 That sounds lovely, Julia. I hope Hoffs has time to fit in some of the things you've suggested.

I'm curious to hear Emeli Sande this evening. Her song 'Next to me' has been added to my personal exclusive list of tunes to switch the radio off to (which includes kd lang 'Constant Craving' and Kenny Rogers 'Son of Hickory Hollers Tramp'), thanks to its being played to death on Radio 2. However, I saw her singing something else on TV at the weekend (think it was on The Voice) and I thought she was quite good.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 42.

Maybe some people are content with 'cramped?'

Happy Together - The Turtles :)

  • Comment number 43.

Morning everyone.........................so very very late today..............not sure if it's worth the effort...........................but here goes........................................

SOUL TO SQUEEZE - RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

I WANT TO BREAK FREE - QUEEN

    HEART-SHAPED BOX - NIRVANA

SQUEEZEBOX - THE WHO (one of my regular ARFO suggestions)

MAN IN A SHED - NICK DRAKE

    LITTLE BOXES - BOB SEEGER

    and of course.....................................................

LIVING IN A BOX - LIVING IN A BOX

    Dougal x............................................................................................

  • Comment number 44.

Although the sun is up in the sky and the clouds are few, it's still chilly, think I'll put my cardigan on.

Taking life seriously is not something I do much, apart from when it's necessary. I think I take each minute, hour, day etc. etc. as it comes and react to the moment.

And on that happy note, my suggestion for today:

Seven rooms of Gloom - The Four Tops

Have a happy day one and all. X

  • Comment number 45.

Bit late today so sorry for things already suggested 44 times already

In my Place - Cold play

Living in a box - Living in a box

Living on the ceiling - Blancmange

    Steamy Windows - Tina Turner

  • Comment number 46.

    Just a quickie.

What seems a long time ago (1990 I think) there was a Red, Hot and Blue video (yes, video - and not a naughty one as the title might suggest, please read on) and CD released to benefit AIDS research and relief. It was full of Cole Porter songs sung by a variety of singists such as Kirsty MacColl & the Pogues, Neneh Cherry, Deborah Harry & Iggy Pop, U2, Annie Lennox, Erasure, Tom Waits and lots more - cracking listen. Anyway, the reason for these ramblings (not such a quickie after all) is in order to introduce my oldies suggestion for today from this CD, which is

DON'T FENCE ME IN - David Byrne

    a brilliant version.

I know others have suggested this song by Bing or Ella but, in my humble opinion, David Byrne's deserves a radio 2 airing.

  • Comment number 47.

Or on the other hand, being that close together....

    Everybody knows!! - Leonard Cohen.

Right, the great outdoors is calling.

    Gotta fly........

  • Comment number 48.

#22 Harry, you mentioned old gameshows... and I was channel-hopping late the other night and came across 3-2-1 and couldn't believe that I used to sometimes watch it, having heard Jim Bowen mentioning 'Bully' and saying, 'let's see what you would have won!' etc etc!!!

  • Comment number 49.

As I'm sure we all know, TV programmes can be life-changing. I didn't catch it all (way past my bedtime) but Channel4's offering last night at 10pm has pompted me to give up the bookshop to take up "Rinsing".

The business model seems fairly straight forward: set up a website or tw*tter account; add a photograph; list all the things you want; and, then, stupid people* send them to you.

First thing on my list is Vitruvius' De Architectura. I'm not greedy enough to want a first edition so I'll settle the 1521 Italian language edition, the one translated and illustrated by Cesariano. I'll be posting my PO Box number later should anyone have a copy lying around :0D

*I am aware that last night's programme chose only to highlight the incredible number of stupid men willing to send gifts to complete strangers but I'm sure there must enough stupid women out there, somewhere, to keep me in all the literary trinkets I can consume?

  • Comment number 50.

#48... Oops... I meant to say BULLSEYE, not 3-2-1... that was Ted Rogers (I think)!

U2 - Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of

  • Comment number 53.

49 - Harry - the pressure's on now to return something to you - can't say that it will be entirely the one that you want!!

  • Comment number 54.

GOT NOWHERE TO RUN, NOWHERE TO HIDE - MARTHA REEVES & VANDELLAS

GET OFF MY CLOUD (COZ 2'S A CROWD)- ROLLINGSTONES

  • Comment number 55.

39 - Julia40 - Thanks for the London suggestions. Very kind. Making detailed plans now.

By the way, not suggesting tunes today. All been suggested already.

    This post brief enough?

  • Comment number 56.

    #48/#50 I did wonder.

Did anyone spend hours trying to perfect the 3-2-1 hand thingy, without making rude gestures?

    Oh - just me then...

#49 I'm not familiar with the term, but assuming that no actual meeting takes place, does the gender of the sender actually matter?

A colleague at a former post used the following as a signature on his emails:

"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots.

So far the Universe is winning."

NEXT TO ME - EMELI SANDE

Given that she is going to be on the show tonight, the song rather fits the bill.

Got all my 2011/12 newbees for the last time this afternoon and the power point and music to reflect their year is at the ready. - as are the hankies.

No choon suggestions from me, my brain is not in gear at all.

The sudden death of a just retired ex-boss, mentor and friend yesterday has made this a bad day. We emailed yesterday about her coming into work with her legendary brownies next week - and this morning her 'reply' came from her poor husband telling me the shocking news.

    She was just 62.

Back later - sorry to hear Zoe has decided to duck out for a bit (?) it's like a warm friendly hug [[ ]] this place, even now I feel better having read all your posts and quips.

#49 - those are the people who used to advertise in the back of Private eye, surely?

Always tempted by that one myself.

Instead of which I found me a hubby in the back of Private eye - but that's a whole other story, in the same vein as 'Reader, I married him'

Zoe W - Sometimes its good to have a break from summat. Even the things you enjoy doing. Look forward to 'reading' from you soon ;-)

One and only suggestion from me, even tho' it is not an oldie, but fits anyway

    Lego House - Ed Sheeran

Sees you on the next blog

    A.

  • Comment number 71.

#65 Well I was just going to wish you all Happy Wednesdays - and I still do - whilst acknowledging it's not so easy for you Suziee. What dreadful news. So young as well. My sincere sympathies.

I also agree that our little corner of the interwebs is like a warm friendly hug.

I think it is also ...

☆ a centre of language excellence and

    ☆ a delightful nature trail

☆ a glorious melting pot of shared music

☆ a fastfood stall for double entendre and innuendo with a dash of wit

☆ a comfortable armchair of stories told and stories to tell

☆ a two-way communication tool for like-minded spirits incl. the DTDude.

☆ a panorama of fellow worlds and opinions

☆ a haven of virtual sanity when that real world threatens to overwhelm

☆ just someone to talk and tell stuff to

... so it's hardly surprising that, given the one-dimensional nature of our contributions - ie. the typed word/symbol - now and again a little bit of mischief can be misconstrued, a jokey tone can hit a sensitive spot, a well meant suggestion can jar ...

It's so easy for us to be clear what we *say* when we type something and press that send button. The difficulty arises when others think they know what we *mean*.

So don't be a stranger Zoe. You are one of the most articulate, emotionally intelligent and honest people I've ever 'met' through this medium. You also have an incredible story to tell and a domestic life that, at times, defies description. But through it all, you never fail to convey your enthusiasm for great music and current affairs. This will surely be a poorer place without your courageous spirit.

Can you just have a little rest - a blog break perhaps? Maybe? Please?

    And come back tomorrow!

    :^D

  • Comment number 72.

    #71 Well put.

From Harry's Flash Fiction 'request' yesterday, may I present...

    ---Gordon's Flash---

Gordon created an account. Gordon would be a 'blogger'; Gordon would be 'Big Goggs Blogs'.

He had been feeling left out. He didn't like feeling left out. Human beings are social animals; he needed social interaction.

    What to type?

Did he join the discussion on the etiquette of sneezing in public? Too risky for a first post.

Bloggers who listened to Stewie's Radio Show were encouraged to suggest tunes on a daily theme. Maybe later on.

He allowed a chuckle to himself at the goings on in the blogosphere as he lurked, the blog offered a good cross-section of society, thought Gordon.

    Gordon typed; he interacted, socially.

Gordon sought to advise 'sprungChick' on growing organic vegetables.

“I cover my onions in muck, but you need a good old scrubber before you use them”

    “Naughty Step!” replied 'sprungChick'.

Gordon blushed, deleted his account and went to the pub to interact, socially.

Have I missed something? Expected to see some sort of blazing row when I read Zoe's post.

Kathryn's spot on, it's the internet, every day thousands of people say something that maybe didn't come across quite as intended, or someone took a different way than was intended, or think they might have done, or just that they wish they hadn't said at all. The next day thousands of other people step into their shoes and do it all again.

    Come back Zoe!

Grrr... just lost my post *deep breath* Here it is again

#65 Suzieeee, so sorry to hear your news

#71 Well said as ever, KatyMatey! However, is it possibly you've misunderstood Zoe's reason for stepping back from the blog? I've been in touch with her elsewhere - she's having a particularly busy and stressful time with the twins at the moment (I'm sure she won't mind me saying) and she feels that blogging is taking her away from other things she should be concentrating on. She has assured me that it's absolutely nothing to do with the other 'matter' mentioned in her post. And I'm sure she'll be back with us again ere long.

#87 Apple hash? I've only heard of corned beef hash!? ;)

My boss refers to that key as the 'pound-sign' a hangover from spending too much time in the USofA, methinks.

    From Harry's #84 yesterday .... a quick flash ;)

One day a girl named Jilly decided to go for a meander. She chose an unfamiliar route, a vast place of uncharted territory.

Trepidation reigned as there were many stories of dangers that could befall naive visitors on such a journey. Rumours abounded of unsavoury characters taking advantage of unsuspecting newcomers.

Despite her anxiety Jilly persisted, although with increasing unease, likening her experience to that of being caught in a web or floundering in a net. She mopped her brow with a facecloth but it brought scant relief.

About to retreat she discovered what could only be described as an oasis. After a tentative hello she was greeted with a welcome to warm the coldest of hearts.

Since then Jilly has made many more forays to that special place now filled with people she proudly calls friends and, if you're reading this, I'm glad you've made it here too.

    :)

#89 - thanks Jilly! What a lot to learn! I have visions of lots of post-its everywhere till I get used to it.

#72 nice story - esp like the ending!

There's a large bottle chilling in the fridge for me to drink with my Private Eye hubby after I finish work....late tonight :-(

Thanks for all the sympathies, a ((hug)) from the blog is what I needed - my colleagues here have come and gone since her day so there's only about 3 of us that knew her well.

Waiting to hear about what day next week the 'celebration of a life' (what I prefer to call them) will take place.

#73 I found him under the 'Eye Love' section...we emailed, we met, shared a G&T and the rest as they say is history. All thanks to Ian Hislop - and not many people would say that.

#91 Jilly - was that 'fiction' based on real events?

    I'm sure there's a theme there that I recognise but I just can't pin int down! :P

'Tis very good. A condensed page-turner!

Off to the coffee machine (one for the road, as it were)...

Just a quick poop back to say:

Suzie - so sorry to hear the sad news. Must have been a huge shock to you. Sending hugs.

CBuzz and Jilly - loved the stories!

Sal - good luck with the scoping

Jennie - hang in there with your new machine! Good to see so much of you - I'll never forget the first day I visited rather than lurked and you were so kind and friendly, I've missed seeing your regular posts.

Righto, sad children to attend to.

    See you soon x

    Hi All!

I've been SQUEEZED, PENT-UP and HEMMED-IN all day and this is the first I could get here to virtual Simon portal. Life does get in the way of the blog, don't we all know that.

Katy, great that you had a good MRI reading. The one I had last week was less good and there is an up side, cancer has not gotten to my lymph nodes. My world has turned pretty pink ribbion, no advance permission needed. Sugar-coating illnesses can exact a dreadful cost.

There is a real tat rivalry on sale in the shops now, between the Queen's Diamond Jubilee next month and London 2012 Olympics. The choice is between everything and anything stamped with a royalist crown or one eyed monsters. How does one decide?

#97 gosh, Lilac Blue and I think I am having a bad day...hope the prognosis is good?

My mum had a bit of extraneous matter taken out of her bonce a couple of years back, in fact possibly more than they should have, but no noticeable effects...

Good luck with the treatments they offer & lean on folks, it's what family and friends are here for.

I reckon I'm here alone (working late) so am going to go for the 100....

  • Comment number 99.

Muchly enjoyed The Cure, nice change...

    Ok, going for the 100.

One small victory for one small person.
