One we made earlier.

Simon Mayo|08:06 UK time, Thursday, 17 May 2012

Today's blog written in a car heading, I think to Sky News and then to Loose Women for some general quiz show-based chat. I suppose it could be about the euro zone but I didn't check. Will try to get gratuitous references to Radio 2 and Drivetime in where possible. Onwards and upwards. Meantime the publishers are wanting to know where the second book is and I'm saying 'the summer'. And that seems to be ok for the moment, depending on how you define 'the summer'. All is well.

Today we have Nigel doing a Rum Baba, a desert I have never tasted nor been tempted to taste. All that pastry, cream and, I assume, rum seems way over the top but we'll see how Nige turns it into a mouthwatering slice of loveliness.

And oldies please for BLUE PETER. The record-breaking children's show is being moved away from BBC1 for the first time and moved to CBBC. Children are multi-channel types and won't notice but older viewers might grumble. It does feel like the end of an era so let's do some Blue Peter tunes to mark the moment.

Have a fragrant and glowing Thursday. See you after 5.

    Morning all

Thoroughly enjoyed the Waterboys last night. A very rocking first half of "vintage" (Mike's description) songs.

And then came the "Appointment with Mr Yeats" stuff in the second half. When that started I wasn't sure - the first three songs in quick succession were a bit odd. But then they played what I think was "The Song of Wandering Aengus" (according to Google search for silver apples golden apples) and that was quite simply beautiful. Add in "White Birds", "Mad As The Mist and Snow", weird masks and I was totally convinced and bought the album at a gig-premium-price of £15 on the way out :-)

We got a half-reggae/half-normal Whole of the Moon (can take or leave that one) and a sublime Fisherman's Blues in the encore and I went home happy. Loved Mike Scott's description of the venue - "feels like a large school hall and we feel like 6th formers up here with electric guitars trying to impress the girls".

Very good night, could have done with a few more people in the audience though.

Ahhhh Blue Peter - whilst I don't have a single creative or artistic bone in my body I do recall trying to make glittery Christmas cards and a loo-roll covered in brown-checked sticky-back plastic as a pen holder for my Dad's work desk (bless him, I think he did take it in and use it for a while). The Advent Crown, Tracy Island etc were far beyond my abilities - and I knew it!

Oldies - well I'm afraid I can't think of more thean the obvious so will plump (again) for:

    Blue Monday - New Order

#8 Ken, I'm so pleased that like me, you enjoyed The Waterboys!!! Seems ages since we saw them, yet in was only last month. I love Mike Scott and especially Fisherman's Blues, which was also an encore for us.

We had a full house of well over 2,000 in Edinburgh, but as he is from Edinburgh, he's maybe more popular than where you are and the applause at the end went on for ages.

Is this a mask like you bought? I couldn't resist taking a picture as it looked so weird!!

    https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7092/7214248062_7cd2be7794_c.jpg

The night we saw them, they sang 'A Bang on the Ear' a song he wrote from when he was a shy schoolboy, and Lindsay, the girl mentioned in the first line of the song, was sitting in our audience with her husband. Mike said he was meeting her after the show and had never seen her since 1973 and he had tracked her down on Friends Reunited, via their old school. He said she is a fan of The Waterboys, has all their records but never knew that she was the Lindsay in the song!

"Lindsay was my first love she was in my class

I would have loved to take her out but I was too shy to ask

The fullness of my feeling was never made clear

But I send her my love and a bang on the ear"

    Morning all,

DT team, bloggers both poorly, well, and of course the feted DT Dude (let's hope that Sky News don't ask him to comment on the Eurozone crisis..)

Heard this on t'news this morning and thought coffeebuzz might like to see it:

    https://www.news-press.com/article/20120517/HEALTH/305170044/Drink-coffee-live-longer-study-finds

No sun here, but it lingered well into the evening yesterday around by us so even though I was home late, still time for a wander up to the rabbit and deer woods up the road. Trying to discern one bird's song from another on such an evening proved pointless, they were all at it LOUDLY!

    Re theme,

I have tweeted - and as usual not appeared on DT Dude's timeline - so had to 'unfollow' and re-follow him - sorry DT Dude if you had batted me away as a spambot - I'm back!!

Joni Mitchell's LOVE track, for her (amended line) 'when I became a woman, I put away childish things'

    PLUS

Amen corner, Bend me shape me (memories of cereal boxes, cardboard tubes, sticky backed plastic and the famous 'Thunderbird Island' they showed us how to make - which in my house looked more like something that had fallen OUT of a recycling wheelie bin and then been RUNOVER by a truck!)

    and

Sham 69 'If the kids are united'

Trying to think of something appropriate for the scrapes that John Noakes got into for the BP producers:

YOU CAN MAKE ME DANCE, SING OR ANYTHING by Leo Sayer or

ACTION MAN by Village People....eek first HOIB of the day, or did #17 beat me to it?

Oh, and much respect to CBuzz and Jilly who rose to Harry's flash fiction challenge. Had me hooked.

  • Comment number 46.

#23 I bought the CD, not a mask. Or at least I I think I did :-). But yes, that was the mask he wore, doing some wild dancing at the back while masked fiddle and keys players were "duelling", before walking forward with the book as in your photo.

The audience in St Albans wasn't bad, seats upstairs were all sold bar 2 when I looked at around 6pm, but we had plenty of room to move to the music in the standing area. But they all seemed to enjoy themselves and he said he'd had a great time so I think everyone was happy.

It's brave to play the newer stuff in a lump in the second half, as you must run the risk of it going flat after everyones had a great time hearing the older stuff in the first half. Although, the album's been out for quite a while now I think (?), and I gather they were playing some of it a year before it was released, so I guess the regulars will be well versed with it by now.

Happy Thursdays all round and Hello Simon, the Driveteam & Constructors

    :^)

Yesterday just ran away - you know how it is - and just when I found a moment to attempt a thoughtful post [in view of LilacBlue's situation] people arrived in my kitchen/officy place so I abandoned the PC. Anyway, I'm here now. And thank you for all the kind mentions regarding my MRI scan [I have to assume that if something had been amiss I would have had a phone call by now]. LilacBlue - your last post in yesterday's blog brings into sharp relief the wide range of emotions one experiences when presented with the cold hard stats. Many are called upon to deal with cancer but usually on behalf of a loved one. Not so when they themselves are the patient. So it's doubly impressive that you feel comfortable enough to divulge not only your news but also the accompanying feelings. Like our blog chums, I too wish you the very best outcome with positive and hopeful vibes.

    Blue Peter eh?

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

I remember having rhum babas (I'm sure that's how it was spelled) as a child, they were sticky, spongy, creamy desserts ready-made from a supermarket. No actual rum was involved, it was a rum flavoured sugar syrup. We enjoyed them at the time, but I do recall them being very sweet and as I don't have a particularly sweet tooth these days I probably wouldn't be so keen on them now. Will be interested to hear Nigel's take though.

No mensh chasing for me today. I'm going to funnel my energies into thinking of a tub-thumper of a Noughties ARFO... no, Harry - that's not 'naughties'...

#57 Hi Deebs - you slipped in there whilst I was composin'. Yeah - the Noughties? So something released just a couple of years ago would qualify. Interesting. Incidentally, what do people call the decade we are currently experiencing? The Teenies?

  • Comment number 60.

#55 Deebee, if you say so, but I don't see why it can't be both naughty and "noughty"? :0)

#58 Katy, I'd be interested to read your limericks. I wrote one but it all turned out very depressing and given the news around the blog I didn't feel it was appropriate to post it. It was also, characteristically, very pretentious LOL

Perhaps I'll attempt another on a lighter subject.

Of course, although the official "National Flash Fiction Day" was yesterday, no reason we can't celebrate it everyday, is there?

Lilac Blue, Just read your post on yesterday's blog. Your strength at this time is awe inspiring. One day at a time.xxx

Have already sent a couple of suggestions in by another method because I had a meeting first thing and feared I wouldn't get the chance. They were:

SHE'S GOT LEGS by ZZ Top (Valerie Singleton)

MAKE IT WITH YOU by Bread

Mention of Blue Peter made me smile. Did I tell you I might Peter Purves a couple of weeks ago? It was at a dog school training session for kids with a morbid fear of dogs (will tell you about that another time). I ended up stood next to him holding the lead of a Staffie and I couldn't help myself. I had to exclaim: "Ooh Peter! You're wearing your gold badge! Can I look at it please?" He replied: "They give these to you nowadays just for being alive." I said: "No. I remember all the daring things you did to get it and it's well deserved". Hope he didn't think I was referring to his antics with Val ;-) Nice chap.

Off to pick up Little Girl now then the mad dash to her Jimmy Nastics class then the mad dash to pick Big Girl up then the mad dash to Rainbow Guides where I'm the mummy helper tonight. But first I must go and sky + (other recording devices are available etc..) Loose Women.

I've only ever eaten Rum Baba once - I was eight and we were in a very posh hotel in Austria. It was yummy & sticky and really did have real rum in it and I gobbled it down. The I began to feel distinctly odd, and knew I had to leave the table & fast. I managed to make it half-way down the sun terrace before it all came back up again. We left the hotel quickly after that (we were staying elsewhere, thank goodness) and it took me over 20 years to venture back...

So, word to the wise, if you make Nigel's recipe, don't feed it to your kidlets :)

And don't gobble it down in the hot sunshine.

Uggh, not sure if I can even listen...

They knock the spots off the 'Johnny come-lately' newbies who just can't whip the crowd into a happy, hopping bunch.

I have never seen Loose Women. From the comments above I am now starting to get rather concerned for our leader...

  • Comment number 69.

#64 Mr Wickham wore that jacket for part of the show last night!

  • Comment number 70.

#68 Deebee, if Loose Women have heard of you, Simon will be safe! ;0)

  • Comment number 71.

#69 Presumably, it's his 'party piece' jacket - and certainly twinkles in the lights/sunlight (delete as appropriate).

Hope he's got more than one - or it'll stand up on it's own!

  • Comment number 72.

    #67 LOL!

    :o))

  • Comment number 73.

#70 Okay, can we stop this now please? It's not funny any more.

    Actually it never was.

Disappointed that Nige isn't making doughnuts today considering the theme.

Does anyone else remeber the oops TV moment when Mark(?) BP presenter said to the viewers after Fanny Craddock had been on making doughnuts...........

  • Comment number 77.

    Hi Simon,

Well apart from the obvious Mike Oldfield track, other oldies could include...

    BLUE MONDAY - New Order

    BLUE SAVANNAH - Erasure

    BLUE - Eiffel 65

    NATURAL BLUES - Moby

PETER GUNN - Art of Noise / Duane Eddy

THE BALLAD OF PETER PUMPKINHEAD - Crash Test Dummies

    Thanks,

  • Comment number 78.

#73 OK Deebee, I will no longer attempt to find humour in your mother-hen behaviour towards Simon as it clearly isn't funny.

  • Comment number 79.

That's it folks. Back to the field to pick up all my typping and speeling mistakes.

A late finish too:( Boohoo. So will miss the first half of the show.

    Catch you later

Afternoon! Just a swift visit to send hugs to Lilac Blue - what an inspiration you are with such a positive attitude. This place is a good place to be in times of adversity so don't be a stranger to your blogger pals.

Also, hugs, warm woolly jumpers and much choc wending its way to Shona, wherever you are x

Sorry, real life stuff happening at the mo so rather preoccupied. Have a good day all, enjoy the show and here's to multiple blogger menshes and no indigestion in the Drivetime studio after Nigel has made Rum Baba.

Not long until Simon enters the lions den. Brave man. I can't watch.

#74 "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is a great song, would love to hear that.

I have e versions I think: Dylan, The Byrds, Steve Howe and Energy Orchard. My favourite is Energy Orchard's version, I think, although when I saw Van Morrison do it live in Brighton it was sublime.

61 - Julia40 - sorry, just read back and saw your comments about Loose Women. Sorry to duplicate. Great minds think alike and all that....

42 - Suzieeee - you have brought a big smile to my face with your Thunderbirds Island description. Makes me feel better that it's not just the Hoffs family who didn't get it right!

Finally, PSL, wherever you are, can I ask you, are you interested in 'Northern Soul'?

  • Comment number 83.

    Hoffs....does the Pope have a balcony...yes I'm a huge Northern Soul fan

    PSL

  • Comment number 84.

    83 - PSL - LOL! Just checking.

Did you know that Steve Coogan, Lisa Stansfield and Roisin Murphy are due to make a film about the rise of northern soul? Read it this morning and thought of you. I''m probably 20 years behind the times and this news has been common knowledge for a while, but in case not......

    My three worder for today?

    See you all later x

Poor Simon (wearing his Blockbusters' suit and purple shirt), having to sit between Janet Street-Porter and Lisa from The Bill today on Loose Women.... I suppose it could have been worse for him, had he been on when man-snatcher Denise Welch is on, especially as she likes lifting up her top to show her boobs if there is a nice guy sitting beside her! ;o)

  • Comment number 91.

#89 CoffeeBuzz... a good date for a wedding... my birthday and it's always sunny on that day and when I was young, my birthday parties were always outside in the garden and games on the village common at the front of our house!

  • Comment number 92.

#73 Apologies for my earlier uncharacteristic grumpiness. I blame Bill Gates...

#87 Loving the sound of your evening, Suzieeeee - just what I could do with right now. In fact you're lucky I don't live nearer or I'd probably be gatecrashing... Instead, Mr B and I will be spending the evening rearranging furniture and moving nicknacks out of harm's way in preparation for the new hall/dining room carpet being fitted tomorrow.

    #89 It's in the diary!

*wonders if I can get away with the same outfit I had for Harry's nuptials*

#93 Aw that's nothing Deebeedeebs - how can I ever forget posting that excruciating rant against people who were constantly moaning and talking about the rain ... when at the same time, Alex was dealing with a storm damaged greenhouse and garden, Sal was wading thru' flooded Somerset levels and my own front hall was flooding! And then I heard on the news that some poor chap had actually drowned.

    *cringes*
