Back to normal...

Simon Mayo|10:26 UK time, Friday, 11 May 2012

Greetings from a sunny and washed out estate - looking forward to a lovely, normal routine-based day! Everything is back where you knew it should be. Yesterday was a hoot I think with some splendid moments popping up everywhere. My country hour with Alex and the band from Nashville was terrific I thought.

As you might have noticed anyway, I love hearing musicians talking about their instruments. It is always like they are a member of the family with many tales to tell. Each of the band seemed such personalities, I would have happily kept adding members for another hour (Intro and the Outro by The Bonzos anyone?) but those pesky other shows got in the way. And if I'd known my fingernails were under observation and discussion I'd have had a manicure.

Afterwards Sir Terry, Richard A, Tony B, Sir Bob, Lady Claudia and I were all shooting the breeze - something that never, ever happens. Maybe we should all live in a big DJ house with Nigel to look after us all. I might suggest that for the next 2Day...

Today is movies then tunes. To 5Live first to talk movies - Chris Rock is our guest - who stars in a movie called '2 Days in New York' - with its director Julie Delpy. Then to the mighty 2 for some ARF. And a big and wonderful 90'S OPENER please to start the show in an impressive style. Thanks.

Have a structured, reassuring Friday. See you after2&5.

I’d have suggested this whether or not we were going for a 90s opener but I looked it up and it does sneak in.

From the album Supernatural, released in the early Summer of 1999, I’d like to suggest:

SMOOTH by SANTANA feat. ROB THOMAS

It may not be a steering-wheel-slapper, but I defy anyone to keep their bum still once the Latin rhythms start.

And also from yesterday's: #180 Ken, it is looking very likely he'll be the next Wolves manager although I don't think it's been confirmed yet. I'm pleased they seem to be finding a job for Terry Connor who was on a hiding to nothing when he took over.

  • Comment number 24.

    Good morning again.

I made it onto the new blog ;)

I was going to abstain from the ARFO, to see if the crown can be passed on to another blogger. Since last weeks ARFO wasn't a blogger, I'm not sure that'll work.

My plan B is to throw in my suggestion anyway and hope that the bloggers prevail. :P

Happy Fridays all round and greetings to the well-manicured Driveteam and ARF choosers.

Here's a list I compiled earlier - all fine songs from the 90s but perhaps less obvious than some. What little musical credibility I have, however, may not remain intact with my last choice.

    :^)

IS IT LIKE TODAY? - WORLD PARTY 1993 [UK #19 USA #5]

    IN A ROOM - DODGY 1996 [UK #12]

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY - THE LEVELLERS 1997 [UK #13]

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME? - MONACO 1997 [UK #11 USA #24]

    WALTZING ALONG - JAMES 1997 [UK #23]

BAILAMOS - ENRIQUE IGLESIAS 1999 [Best song of 1999 according to most lists #1 on Billboard UK #4]

  • Comment number 32.

    Morning.

    Feeling like a snail today.

Thanks Jilly and Julia for your kind comments re family harmony and smug mothers. Saw a few more of those this morning when Mini-Hoffs had to be forcibly detached from me at 9am. Just doesn't want to go to school. How do I persuade a 6 year old boy that school is cool? All he wants to do is be outside on his bike/tractor/scooter/skateboard, dig, build or kick a ball around. Secretly, I can see where he's coming from, but that isn't really going to help in the future is it? Felt like such a bad mother when I left school this morning that I nearly went and bought a pig. Don't ask.

I tweeted my ARFO suggestion earlier as I couldn't get onto the blog - it has already been suggested here so am keeping my fingers crossed for Dougal and a certain Monsieur Kravitz....

Might have to have another doughnut. There are three left.......

(By the way, Kathryn, if you are around, I can lend you Zeb for a few days to fill the void. He's good at gardening - well, he thinks he is ;-)

  • Comment number 33.

It's nearly midday - so time for an early lunch and the opportunity to YT my way through all your wonderful 90's songs.

I would have an even massiver list if I included all the Indie/Britpop/Grunge that I enjoyed during the early part of the decade ... don't think we hear enough 90s tracks on Drivetime.

#4 Harry - love that song .. arguably the best song of 1999.

♫ Man it's a hot one ... like seven inches from the midday sun ..

    :^D

  • Comment number 34.

A quick post from the M6 somewhere between juncs 25 &26 (I'm not driving I hasten to add!). On my way up to Stirling for a funeral unfortunately. I won't crown chase today as I won't hear the show but good luck to all.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

  • Comment number 35.

OK - this is my first posting on the blog.

If you want 90s and a bit raucous, I'd go for This Is How It Feels - Inspiral Carpets.

  • Comment number 36.

#31 This opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Enrique Iglesias?

Now I'm tempted to suggest Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca" but I think I'll save him for next week (if we do the Noughties) and go for "She Bangs"

  • Comment number 37.

#35 Welcome Natalie, pull up a chair, grab a drink from JBG's buffet, and join in.

  • Comment number 38.

OK, so having read my last post, have given myself a large kick somewhere behind me. Can I make another ARFO suggestion please?

MAMBO No 5 - LOU BEGA

Perhaps not necessarily raucous enough but it's jolly. It would be good to hear the original version too because all I can remember are the Bob the Builder lyrics.

  • Comment number 39.

Yesterday Sally was telling us all afternoon that Broadhall Way was closed for an accident.

Tonight Broadhall Way is the scene for the biggest match in Stevenage's history (yes, even bigger than the matches against Simon's beloved Lilywhites!) - until the return leg on Monday, and then hopefully the match a fortnight later at Wembley :-)

Could be an evening of a whole range of emotions! Work contentration today is difficult.

  • Comment number 40.

13 - JBG - sorry, missed that you had requested Mr Kravitz too.

    Afternoon all

Have been reet busy recently hence the sporadic appearances. Thought I'd take a break to throw my ARFO hat into the ring today, though.

Already some suggestions I'd have gone for but am going with a couple of my 90's faves:

    'Hush' - Kula Shaker

    'Oblivion' - Terrorvision

Much enjoyed 2Day yesterday - was working from home some managed to catch most of it - although had to keep checking what time it was!

Have fab Fridays one and all :-)

#34 Autumn, sorry about your news but please give me a wave as you pass Junction 42.

  • Comment number 44.

The last few ARFO sessions have caused a lot of reminiscing in the Hoffs family. The seventies and eighties caused a lot of mirth amongst the younger members of the family but when my husband mentioned that one of his abiding memories of the 90's was of Hoffs the running-fanatic driving around in pink shorts and sunglasses, with Oasis blaring from the car CD player, the room went very quiet and there were a few disbelieving faces. Hmm, perhaps the doughnuts of the noughties have rather taken their toll...

  • Comment number 45.

    #32 Hoffs - bless you x

#36 H - those crazy latin rhythms get me every time!

At the other end of the decade I've just been playing this VERY LOUD

Just discovered an album called Ricky Martin Unplugged and I'm wondering what kind of plug that might have been? ;0)

I'll leave you all in peace now. I have a hospital appointment but should be all done in time for 5.05 and the Opener.

Oh, and @Suzieeeeee, if you're around tomorrow I should be able to keep you company for some of it. Had to cancel my Fair due to game-leg so I should be on t' blog.

  • Comment number 48.

Also, keeping fingers crossed that Shona's day goes well, that Mo is nearly smiling as the working week draws to a close and that Zoe appears soon, having triumphed over the flatpack cupboard....

  • Comment number 49.

'Big' in Drivetime-speak (and ARFO-speak) usually means 'a Rock record'. Much as I'd like:

    CHORUS - Erasure

I'm also going to hedge with:

    SHE'S A STAR - James

    and

    CIGARETTES & ALCOHOL - Oasis

    and

ALL TOGETHER NOW - The Farm (after all, Paul of S, you can't hide from the Pachelbel!)

  • Comment number 50.

47 - Harry - LOL! See you later, hope hospital trip goes OK.

  • Comment number 51.

#48 The cupboard is up! Whether it stays that way is another matter!

    Good Afternoon All :)

I need to read back, the cupboard assembly has taken up my morning.

    I went for...

    SONG2 - BLUR

On Twitter, as my ARF suggestion, but I thought of another one, because it reminds me of TFI FRIDAY...

THE RIVERBOAT SONG - OCEAN COLOURSCENE

    Hello again,

Survived toddler group. One little lad tried to ram a crumpet in my mouth but I managed to dodge him. Phew.

A 90s opener. Was hoping to suggest the song that is the biggest, loudest memory I have of that time but just found out it was released in 1989. Drat.

Having had a rethink I would like to suggest:

    WANNABE by The Spice Girls

LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU by Robbie William

Ken, Thank you for your wise words on yesterday's blog.

#32 Hoffs, Sorry you are having a rotten time convincing Mini Hoff to go into school. Are the teachers helping? One of the teaching assistants at Big Girl's school looks like a kindly middle aged lady but quick as a flash she can turn into a night club bouncer and get those kids in with the minimum of fuss. Is Mini Hoffs happy once he's in? I know it's no consolation but usually when I child gets upset at the school door they calm down the minute they are the other side of it.

#35 Hello and welcome to Natalie.

    #42 Hello Lady C.

#47 Harry, Hope all goes well at the hospital.

    Hello All,

Rather late to the party today. I must admit that the 90's seem to have passed me by as far as the music scene was concerned. I was scratching my head this morning trying to think of any songs that I'd think would make a good ARFO.

However, after reading back everyones suggestions, many of the tracks are familiar, and then I thought of this one, which has a bit of a 'carry over' 80's vibe:

THE WHOLE OF THE MOON by THE WATERBOYS

Reading Simon's comments about his hands made me chuckle, it is like we have all been caught out whispering in class! Sorry sir!

Received a number of "presents" in the mail over the last week

Simone Felice debut solo album - I bought this after hearing the session on Bob's show. In particular "New York Times" which was stunning when I was listening through the earplugs while out running on Sunday. It's a song based on stories in the New York Times and quite powerful I thought.

Alabama Shakes - much talked about and raved about recently. I've listened the once and so far I haven't quite made my mind up whether really I like it or not, although I have a feeling that a lot of it would be excellent performed live.

Spirirtualized - Sweet Heart, Sweet Light I love Spiritualized, but having seen the songs live I'm not sure the recorded versions have the same impact. Will need a few more listens to be sure.

Also bought 3 x The Low Anthem albums. So far I've listened only to Oh My God Charlie Darwin. Like it a lot, but prefer the slower tempo stuff to the louder, faster songs.

Wishlist - the Chieftains album will have to wait until after the MOT is out of the way.

  • Comment number 68.

    Afternoon all

Quick poop in to say hello and offer these for ARFO

DEE-LITE - GROOVE IS IN THE HEART

NIRVANA - COME AS YOU ARE

    SUPERGRASS - ALRIGHT

Which shows you how varied my 90's choice in music was.

    Cheers

    Hi All

"You get what you give" by The New Radicals - Proper 90's Anthem

    Thanks

  • Comment number 70.

Hello all - absence note seems to have vanished in the post, like my niece's thank you note for her birthday present!

I think the 90's must have passed me by because nothing special leaps up, begging to be played. I'll second Billie's Take That suggestions as they remind me of a desperate time when Mr was made redundant and he sold things on a market stall to make ends meet. He acquired some Take That calendars from somewhere and they went like hot cakes......... so we owe them some thanks!

I enjoyed yesterday's 2day - some good, some not. Why was Mr Allinson only given 5 minutes chatting to Sir Tel? Wasted talent BBC!!!

And if CE was so hot in the 100 club, why didn't he take his overcoat off? Just asking.....

    JW

  • Comment number 71.

    And I'm back (briefly)

Autumn Gale - Sorry to hear you're on your way to a funeral, but hope it goes as well as it can do.

Harry - Hope it's nothing serious - you're hospital appointment, that is!

    Welcome to all newcomers :)

I don't think Simon has anything to worry about r.e the state of his fingernails. They looked quite well manicured to me, bit long for my tastes, but each to their own. :)

Oh, and I thought of another 90s favourite, referencing one of *the* series of the 90s...

    MULDER AND SCULLY - CATATONIA

Off to squeeze a bath in before the twins get home...There may be Tweeting... ;)

Good luck for the ARFO everybody xx

  • Comment number 72.

#71 D'oh! That should have read 'your hospital appointment', not 'you're', I can usually get it right... ;)

  • Comment number 73.

    #66

    Deebee,

    Thank you!

  • Comment number 74.

    71 - Zoe - thanks - how could I forget about Catatonia?

66 - Deebee - need any matchsticks yet or has the coffee been working its magic today? There's a lovely poem by William Wordsworth that I came across recently courtesey of Teen Hoffs. Its called 'To Sleep' and it sums up insomnia perfectly!

Lunch today was accompanied by a browse through the highlights of 2Day. As I watched, I thought about just how many people must have been involved in the production - not just the presenters. So, rather belatedly, and in the hope that this gets read by Radio 2 staff, 'thank you' for all your hard work yesterday, 2Day was fab!

Going to be on time today for the pick up. Have sandwiches and cake at the ready. Mini Hoffs, Zeb, Einstein and I are going to make the most of the weather and go on an expedition.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone, whatever you are doing. See you soon xx

So, who has more #FMR to offer?

There must be loads after 2day, yesterday.

#67, Ken. I liked the Alabama Shakes and I'll maybe venture out at the weekend to make a purchase.

Off to the coffee machine, to aid the recovery from too much Friday coffee...

    UNBELIEVABLE : EMF

Stands out above all other 90s tunes for this slot.

#70 I think there is a bit of a sense of almost trying to cram too much into 2Day. Simon and the DarkLord's slot could easily have been twice the length. Maybe they should run it twice a year with half the number of participants.

#74 I'm not too bad at the moment thanks, Hoffs. I think it will probably hit me this evening - at around about the second glass of wine... Can I second your comments about 2Day. I didn't get to hear much of it, but what I did hear was very good and I'm sure that was due in no small measure to the efforts of the backroom boys and girls! I did watch the 100 Club gig, which was brilliant!

#75 I don't have any #FMR suggestions, but I am planning to give Richard Hawley a try this weekend. Several people have commented recently about how good he is, and I regret to say I'm not familiar with his work - in fact I think 'Tonight the streets are ours' is the only one of his songs I can name. My bad, as the young people say... So I'd be grateful for any advice on where to start.

"Friday coffee" now means extra marshmallows, or cinnamon syrup.

Welcome all newcomers, stick around and join in the fun :)

Harry, hope all goes well at the hospital x

    AG, thinking of you x

Hope all poorly poppets are on the up.

Hoffs, I have no advice re little ones and school but I do hope you enjoy your adventure! :)

Deebee, I haven't had a chance to listen to Richard Hawley's new album yet but the few snippets I've caught sound good and it's had great reviews. My personal favourite of his is Truelove's Gutter from 2009. In my opinion a great album from start to finish, I play it often.

    Two of my fave tracks...

Thank you! Looking at the requests, I thought maybe the R stood for Rock

    Hello again

I'm not here really! Very rude of me not to say hello to the newbies earlier, please stay, it's a very nice place with good people!

Hoffs - I think Shona is the one to ask, as I believe she teaches that age group, but I know boys are hard to keep concentrating at school.

Could I also suggest asking the school about outside lessons, as I know some schools are trying it to get away from the class room feel, to try and engage better with the boy pupils especially.

    Cheers

#84 SG, You'd be forgiven for thinking that.

We, the bloggers, have first choice on the opening track, hence ARFO(pener)

    Right,

Coffee to be drunk, I's to be dotted, T's to be crossed, then I'm off home.

Have a good weekend. I hope it soothes the weeks troubles for everyone!

OK, home, fish and chips, back for the match. Sounds like a plan.

    Have a good weekend everyone.

Back from hospital and all is clear - thanks everyone for your good wishes.

Last Thursday, while running across the road, trying to avoid a bus, I ruptured my calf muscle. Although it was quite painful, I wasn't too concerned. However, after a few days it started to really swell and my leg below the knee turned several shades of purple and yellow. Emergency doctor thought I might have a DVT so put me on daily injections of anti-coagulant and booked me in for scan this afternoon. Fortunately, the scan showed no signs of any blockages so I can now stop injecting myself and my leg should start returning to its natural colour of a very attractive pink. It's going to take along time to heal properly but at least I'll live and I don't face 3 months of warfarin.

I really am old enough to know better than to run so it is all my own fault.

    And ...................... relax :0)

Re my #89, JBG, do you have a 'space' to spare to pop between the 'a' and 'l' in 'along' above? If so, be a good chap and pass one over ;0)

#22 H, I have messaged you in fb.

    Hi all!

This has been one crazy week and I am so glad it's over. Plan to recharge the batteries over the weekend ready for another go on the assault course next week ;-).

Really fed up I haven't been able to join in the banter. Am only up to #22 and since we seem to have Mr Impatient, when he's not being Mr Pendant ;-), in our midst, thought I should deal with that first. It is almost impossible to write Norwegian as you would say it by the way. Have I just invented a new Mr Man for Roger Hargreaves there?

Back in a bit once I've caught up.

#92 Mo, sorry to hear you've had a bad week.

Thanks for your reply on FB; I think I've got my lips around the pronunciation now but I will practice some more before I try it out in public.

Apologies if I seemed impatient. I wasn't sure you'd be reading yesterday's blog.

And, all other bloggers who've had a less than perfect time this week: let's all sit down, relax for a wee while with ARF and forget our troubles.

  • Comment number 94.

Lots of good stuff up there. And some not so ;-). Shall be listening out for ARFO with interest.

Welcome to new faces. Pull up a chair & join in.

Trying to keep this general so I don't miss anyone out but special mentions must go to...

AG, sorry to hear your news. Safe journey. Thinking of you.

H, glad you got the all clear. You were correct all along at #47 ;-)

I too shall try to explore some of the new to me music as recommended out of 2Day.

Need a easy to watch, feel good, happy ending kind of film to download & watch tonight. Any suggestions?

#94 now you should know better! I was teasing. And it only appeared so because I sped read 2 blogs in one go. That looks wrong. Sped red or spead read?

The "i" I mentioned is as in "silly" not as in "I". Hope that makes sense.

I am sat down and beginning to wind down, thanks.

I belatedly waved to Harry, and your bloated leg :/ (glad to hear all's ok) at junc42

I may even get to hear a teeny bit of the show if my mobile internet connection is strong enough to stream it.....Fingers crossed for a blogpoppet choice.

Harry, glad you got the all clear, that'll learn ya to dash around like a young'un ;)

Mo.. and relax :) The last film that I saw which fits your criteria was Hugo, loved it. Will ponder some more.

Right, 10 minutes to dash around with the hoover before the ARFO.... I'll be back!
