Them next door

Simon Mayo|08:54 UK time, Monday, 14 May 2012

How lovely to be with you this bright and lovely Monday. Up since 4 and awake till late tonight but a top show on the way (I have no way of knowing if that's true but hey, let's go for it). I hope the weekend was a fine one. We managed to purchase Olympic tickets for the athletics stadium which was a fine (and expensive) thing. Alerted to the sale by the BBC's James Pearce's twitter feed, we sat, credit card in hand, ready for the 11 o'clock moment. When it started we kept getting boxes saying 'you have 2 minutes to complete this section' and then you type like a maniac, making mistakes, changing credit cards and forgetting passwords. And then, hundreds of pounds poorer, you emerge triumphant. This had better be good!

Just taken a few moments to catch up on Mike Ingham's terrific commentary for the final few moments of Manchester City's match with QPR yesterday. I was at the Spurs match but this was a commentator's greatest challenge: a climactic heart-stopping finale and Mike rose to the challenge magnificently. When the final goal was scored he found just the right tone and words for the moment. And he looks like Lyle Lovett. A top man.

Tonight we should do songs about NEIGHBOURS. City have been called the noisy neighbours by United so this would be the perfect time to celebrate/complain about the folk next door.

Today it is the book club with Mark Haddon's "The Red House". He scored a spectacular 2 million seller with "The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night Time" in 2003 and here he is in strictly adult territory but writing brilliantly about a large number of family gathered in a wet house in Hay on Wye. Read an extract on my pages and you'll see what I mean.

And then to the Sony Radio awards and an evening of pretending not to care very much. But failing.

Have a day filled with minor triumphs and the occasional grin. See you after 5

I too managed to purchase Olympics tickets yesterday (so stressful due to not having the right card and time limits!) - although I'm intrigued as to how Simon got athletics ones - I didn't get those in my 'offering'. However I'm very happy with my Centre Court tickets for the tennis. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up something for an "Olympic park" event in the general sale.

Is it appropriate to say 'break a leg' RE Sony's, rather than good luck?

LISTEN TO THE MUSIC (OR TAKIN IT TO THE STREETS) by the Doobies, for the LOUD radio over the gardens Mr e had to endure on Saturday when our neighbours had a wee bash in their garden.

or I HEAR YOU KNOCKING by Dave Edmunds..

ALLELUJAH by Fairground attraction which is about neighbours watching, waiting and falling in love from a distance ('I see you every day, I watch as you walk down this way, we pass on the stairs of this council block, too shy to find words to say' Lovely, if not DT material:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQrzE5Peouw

I'm looking forward to hearing Mark Haddon tonight, one of the few books I have picked up and read in literally a few hrs was his Incident book. I passed it onto my son who was also so taken with it, he used it in his GCSE English class as a book to present a review of in front of the class.

We (mr e) and I went to look at buying Mark's house in East Oxford (we didn't know it was his until the 2nd viewing when we noticed the 'Incident' awards etc on the mantlepiece) I had sold my house and mr e was trying to sell his (which never happened, so we couldn't offer on Mark's house).

Mark was (and is presumably) a graphic designer/artist - and his whole cellar was covered in amazing doodlings - I wonder if the new owners painted over it - we wouldn't have!

Back later, if I can think of any more choons, or just to hear about your weekends!

  • Comment number 56.

Morning all !!! Hope your all well.

Planning to have a better week than the previous one which was spent dealing with my Mum who had dementia. Her cousin came to visit from Florida, and to be honest there was never much chance of an emotional family reunion as she seldom knows who I am. We all met up in a tea shop and it all went well for an hour with Mum telling people how old she was and the like. Unfortunatly it then got all too much for her and she decided to 'walk home' after shouting at everyone. Sadly this is her 'defalt' behaviour and we simply have to walk with her untill she comes round.

Is it my imagination or is Blockbusters on tonight ? Time to check the Radio Times I think (other listings magazines are avaliable).

Can I second for todays music choice NEIGHBOURHOOD - SPACE, Id forgotten what a fun song it is untill hearing it again recently.

We've had some 'interesting' neighbours over the years. One in particular, who used to live next door to us on the left, and now lives next door to us on the right (it was us who moved) had a friend who owned a python. The friend came to stay with our neighbour, bringing his slithery, seven foot long companion with him. The kids, who were quite young at the time, were fascinated. I was less so. We had a cat back then, and I made quite sure the cat-flap was securely fastened that night. Just in case...

Hello to all lovely blogger friends and the Drivetime team. It's raining, but my sunny reserves were topped up at the weekend so I'm still smiling.

Haven't read the blog yet, just saw Simon's tweet first thing so here are my suggestions.

    Obvious ones:

LIVING NEXT DOOR TO ALICE - SMOKIE

MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOUR - JERRY MCCAIN

For those fab, friendly neighbours who can't do enough to help:

JUST CALL MY NAME - JAMES TAYLOR

FRIENDS WILL BE FRIENDS - QUEEN

For a tricky, once friendly neighbour relationship:

POSITIVELY 4TH STREET - BOB DYLAN

But my favourite, which I would really really love to hear is:

Just sank at Aquafit. Need to go and recover. Will make a coffee and read back.

14 - Zoe - Eurythmics - ooh, love that one

23 - Katy - Boom Shake the Room - I like it! (That's us when husband Hoffs is watching TV, poor man can't hear very well.) Also, for your later suggestion - Drifters, Come On Over to My Place - great song

    30 - Julia40 - LOL!

56 - Gill - sounds like last week was a tough one. Really hope this one is better for you.

72 - Deebee - yuk, snakes! I would have been sitting by the catflap all night with a rolling pin, just in case.

When we moved in here recently, I thought I would just check with my attached next door neighbour whether they can hear anything, because we are quite a noisy lot. She very politely said that the only place that you can hear anything between the houses is in the loo upstairs, where we share a wall. All was going well until a couple of weeks ago when Mini Hoffs was sitting on the loo watching the Muppets song (The Drivetime favourite) on my laptop (don't ask, long story) and he was singing along. We suddenly became aware of someone on the other side of the wall. Goodness knows what they think we get up to having heard that!

    Good Afternoon everyone

Here I was all set for joining in this morning. Got work and the office was flooded. All had to decant to neighbouring offices (how apt considering today's theme)

    Off to read back

#56 Gill - fingers crossed for a better week. It's very hard in situations like that and nothing you can do :/

    #78 Hoffs - lol

And talking of unsuccessful exercise: Harry - how's your leg doing?

#56 Gill, sorry to hear about your mum. Our friend's mum is exactly the same and it's very upsetting for him as him mum does not have a clue who he is.

I'm looking forward to Blockbusters tonight and I thought I saw somewhere that it was on at 9pm but having just checked, I see it's on at 8pm but if anyone misses it, it's repeated about ten times before the second programme.... I am presuming the extra listings are repeats... or is it on every night?

Good luck Simon & Mark! You chaps are very clever by making Friday afternoon fun and interesting.

I'm with you #88 Amy Scarlett and first song in my head was:

    Very splendid indeed.

Quick poop back. Slight issue with a packed lunch. Just to say that I completely forgot to wish Mr Mayo 'good luck' for the Sony Awards tonight. Also, Blockbusters tonight - how could I forget?

Back to chores. See you at 5.05pm x

#56 Gill, sorry I missed your post earlier. Sounds like you had a tough week - hope this one is better for you ~X~X~

#91 I may be wrong about this but I think Blockbusters is on Monday to Friday, with the 5 o'clock programmes being a repeat of the previous day's 8 o'clock show.

    And it's droughting again!!!

Never mind - nice and dry in here. Hope not too much damage has been done where you work Shona. Horrible mess to have to clear up and deal with - ugh...

Harry, meant to say how lucky you are to have wrens nesting in your gas meter box - keep us updated!

We have collared doves and pigeons nesting in the conifers around our pond but the magpies keep raiding their nests so I don't think they are very successful. We do have a pair of crows nesting near to us and one of them is a regular visitor to the pond to get his breakfast/lunch/dinner - tadpoles and newts we think! As long as he leaves the fish alone he is welcome to share nature's bounty!

What have I learnt today? After just returning from the docs I have learnt that...

exuberant football celebrations = small tear in calf muscle!

Two weeks stir for me - good job it's only once in a blue moon (which I now realise is 44 years).

Talking of which, any chance of you playing Blue Moon?
