And A Happy 2Day To You Too

Simon Mayo|09:45 UK time, Thursday, 10 May 2012

Morning to all, and another 2Day is upon us. This is a great thing of course, if somewhat disconcerting. Radio thrives on the familiar; many, maybe most of us tell the time by what's happening on the wireless. So today is like a radio holiday, or radio jet lag. You're listening as normal but you're not getting Popmaster, Lovesongs or The Big Show. You won't be getting Confessions or sport either! But hopefully you will hear stuff that normally doesn't fall within your hours of listening. And you quite like it. That's the theory. Let us all know what you think anyway.

I'm on from 2-3 this afternoon with Alex Lester and we are assembling a great band of country session musicians in Nashville to jam and play some country classics. Alex fills in for Bob sometimes and he LOVES his country. My theory is that in the UK you come late to country music. It is the quintessential American music and isn't (it seems to me) aimed at young people. Its themes are often weary and worn-down and that happens later in life. But there is also great dance music here and unbelievable virtuosity too. All on display today between 2 and 3.

I hope you enjoy!

Have a mildly surprising and occasionally thrilling Thursday. See you at 2.

Don't know what to say - no toons to thunk up!

Enjoying some of 2DAY so far - Graham a good start, nice to hear Mark Radcliffe and Janice Long. Looking forward to Ken and yourself, of course.

Off to start up the ark and take the dogs for a 'walk' now.

  • Comment number 2.

Morning all, sky an interesting colour of purple here.

Nothing mildly surprising or occasionally thrilling happened yet, roll on 2 o'clock ;)

  • Comment number 3.

    Good morning,

Erica, Hope you get considerably less stressed as the day goes on.

amy, Well the sky sounds mildly thrilling if nothing else.

    Thoughts on 2Day so far:

    Graham made me giggle.

    Tony's singing - pass...

Loved Zoe's dance stuff - a great morning motivator.

Currently completely confused. Having Jo Whiley on rigt now makes me think it's time to prepare dinner. At this rate I could be having lamb cutlets for lunch today.

Suzie from Wednesday's blog, thanks for the suggestion of a spacesuit for Big Girl's Jubilee outfit. Thought that was a great idea. However I happaned to mention in passing to my mother that I was thinking about the Pearly Queen idea and she immediately rallied the troops (all her neighbours) and put together a vast selection of white buttons so I feel obliged to go with my original idea.

Looking forward to 2pm. A weekday without Lord Ammo's dulcet tones would be like a spring day without rain - unthinkable.

    Have a good 2Day.x

  • Comment number 4.

And a Happy 2Day to you too!

    I don't know why I didn't - but I didn't expect a new blog!

    Good Morning again!

  • Comment number 5.

Morning one and all......................I hope that everyone is feeling a little bit perkier today.................I think that the weather doesn't help..........fed up with rain....rain .......rain!................................................................also I find that the Bank Holiday always causes things to go off kelter............................well no mensh chasing today.......................so I'll wish you all a better day x..................

    Dougal x...................................................................................................

    P.S Shona..........good impersonation last night ;0) .........................................

    Good Morning All

Thank you Simon for giving us a shiny new blog for 2Day, even though there's no choon choosing to do today! And how lovely to see two 'occasional' bloggers kicking things off - hi to Stressed Erica and amyscarlett!

It was a bit confusing turning the radio on this morning and hearing Graham Norton talking to Paul O'Grady - I didn't know whether it was Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon...

    ;o)

Disappointed that I won't be able to hear Simon and Alex Lester's slot 'live' this afternoon - might have got away with it if it had been a Friday, but I've got far too much work to do :o( Thank goodness for ithingy...

#3 Julia, your post made me smile! Glad you've got your Big Girl's outfit sorted - I look forward to seeing the pictures on FB.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 7.

Sorry but this banal drivel (Pop Mistress) that's on at the moment is sending me over to 6Music.

*wondering if this was their intention?*

  • Comment number 8.

Morning lovely Deebee. There are many pros and cons to being a stay at home mum. You never get a weekend or a lie in - but you do get to listen to an awful lot of Radio 2.

Morning Dougal. Keep your chin up. Before you know it we will all be complaining it's too hot.

  • Comment number 9.

    Good Morning Each!

Looking forward to hearing my two fave R2 presenters in tandem. Does anyone know when Richard Hawley pitches up?

  • Comment number 10.

Ooh Harry, You conspiracy theorist you ;-)

Morning Mr Sheff, How's life up there these days?

  • Comment number 11.

#7 I did wonder when I read about that. Isn't 'our' Nigel involved?

    ~X~

  • Comment number 12.

#11 Debee, Yes, "our Nige" did pop up in it. It wasn't really holding my attention at the time though so I couldn't tell you what he was up to.

  • Comment number 13.

#4 Morning Billie. What's fer dinner/lunch/tea/supper/whatever we decided it should be called when we had that debate yonks ago?

    What's on the keyboard tonight?

  • Comment number 14.

I'm back. Boy, is it wild and windy out there but it is also very warm.

Steve, Brian and Trevor are an interesting mix. It is great to hear Steve less shouty, and actually sharing the hour with Brian and Trevor, rather than taking over the show.

So far, apart from Tony's singing, I'm enjoying this. #7 Harry, sounds like I timed my dog walk well.

  • Comment number 15.

Good morning poppets old and new!

Sorry for absinthe. It's been a strange week here and I haven't felt like joining in but I've had a little lurk and smiled as usual with you all. It does appear I am not the only one out of sorts in one way or another so hugs and thoughts to those who aren't feeling fine and dandy.

Love your buffet JBG, keep up the good work that man!

#9 PoS rather disconcertingly I thought I heard that Mr Hawley would be on with Vanessa Feltz between 12-1 ... I could be mistaken though (hopefully) so don't take it as gospel.

Am enjoying the Matthew, Wright and Nelson Soul Show at the moment. I hope PSL is tuning in.

I hope as the week progresses everyone feels a little better, happier and less stressed.

Back later to check up on you all ;)

    Jillyxxx

  • Comment number 16.

    Morning all.

    Right, enough is enough!

The week away so far has involved thermal underwear and waterproof outerwear!

    I say NO MORE!

Its all coming off. I have ordered a lovely weekend for all and it had better jolly well arrive.

Off to superscope a pair of glossy ibises!

    Gotta fly.......

    Happy Days :)

  • Comment number 17.

    Right, head examined, nothing there.....

16 - Sal - that's spooky - I just logged on to ask 'has anyone seen Sal lately' and there you were! Thanks for the weekend weather order - fingers crossed the people-up-there-that-make-it-rain (according to Mini Hoffs) are listening.

Have fun with your ibises - sadly all we have now are a pair of greedy magpies and a squirrel to watch. All the little birds, the woodpeckers and Charlie Chaffinch seem to have run (flown?) for cover....

Nearly lunchtime - am hoping that the JBG cafe is still open.

    See you soon x

  • Comment number 18.

    Hiya Hoffs.

Here's a big bird and its young for you to watch.....

    https://www.newforestgateway.org/Wildcam/LiveCameras/tabid/117/Default.aspx

  • Comment number 19.

...and its a tad drafty out there, but even so, how wonderful is the birdsong in the background?

Lunchtime you say? Fresh crab sandwich anyone?

    Back later.... :)

  • Comment number 20.

18 - Sal - thanks for that - much much more interesting than a fat squirrel!

Jilly - sorry to hear that you are feeling out of sorts - warm thoughts coming your way :0)

  • Comment number 21.

Back. Dogs bedraggled, shivery and not at all happy but at least the rain had warmed up a little from the great dollops of sleet that were teeming down when I dropped the kids off at school at 8.15. Still bally cold though, brrr.

Is this Steve Wright and co programme recorded do you think? It's not being streamed live.

  • Comment number 22.

#19 Ooh, fresh crab sandwich sounds nice.......

  • Comment number 23.

Hello fellow Blogpopsters - you're all looking very nice today

    :^)

Thanks Simon for a shiny new blog to blow the cobwebs away - think we needed it. S'been a funny old week so far with many of our regulars below par one way or the other.

And Happy *FIRST* birthday to 2Day ..

.. always surprisingly enjoyable. Long may it thrive.

Like most - not everything is my personal cuppa - but the option to press a switch hasn't been banned as far as I know.

Can't be doing with those who'll whinge about the slightest alteration to *their* listening schedule.

In the wise words of Tim Minchin - who is going to be Judas [the best part] in the new production of Jesus Christ Superstar, doncha know ..

"If you dislike somebody's music, listen to something else. The existence of stuff you don't enjoy is not a personal insult ... try defining your taste by what you appreciate rather than what you don't. Loathing is trendy. Buck the trend. Yeah."

    - Twitter 23.02.12

Matthews, Wright and Nelson - great name for an ensemble - are going down a storm here in my gaff. Two notable moments:

Excellent banter re. Steve Wright fading early or talking over the end of tracks.

Dionne Warwick refusing to be pigeon-holed as a singer of 'soul': " I like to think of myself as a singer of music ..."

  • Comment number 24.

#23 Good quote, I'll 'borrow' that if you don't mind?

  • Comment number 25.

I'm rather enjoying all of this 2Day stuff. As you will know, I have a pretty limited knowledge of music so this is good for me.

  • Comment number 26.

    Good afternoon Everyone

I wasn't expecting a new blog today so that's a nice surprise to come home to. Darn pesky work getting in the way of listening to the radio but I might catch a bit of Simon and Alex while I'm out in the car;)

  • Comment number 27.

    #23 Ka/thy/ty/thryn/tyMatey,

Just what I've done and Lauren Laverne (oooooooo I love her Geordie accent) is currently playing Paul Buchanan's Mid Air :0)))))

  • Comment number 28.

#24 You're welcome Erica - think it applies to more than just music.

Talking of which ... some great music on Vanessa's bit. Even succeeded in making me more tolerant of her lilting schoolma'am tone.

Thank you Richard Hawley - my current hero

    *•.¸¸♪♫♥

  • Comment number 29.

Loving hearing all the different presenters on 2Day. Music has been fantastic, particularly on the Matthews, Wright and Nelson show, and now on Feltz & Hawley - some very strange combinations, which just about work (most of the time, anyway).

In particular the Damon Albarn folky stuff was hauntingly good, and I really enjoyed J D Macpherson too. Big thumbs up.

Oh, and I'm finding it fascinating to pop in and watch the studio on the R2 website (easily distracted, moi?). No views of Steve Wright though - wonder if it was prerecorded (#21 Erica), or whether he just refused?! I know he has a tendency for demanding special conditions at R2. Love the show!

  • Comment number 30.

#27 Harry - don't blame you - she certainly knows her stuff.

Always good to know the alternative is there if needed ...

    :^)

  • Comment number 31.

#23 Well said that man! I do believe he was on DID last Sunday. Yet to listen to the podcast.

Sitting here wishing I could listen to 2Day. I can only listen on iplayer at work. iplayer doesn't work abroad but I think we're linked into an Aberdeen network which is good news for me :-). Limits my chances of listening again at a time more convenient though.

Not many posts today but great to see those who have shown up. Would love to join in more but just not possible at the mo. Trying to shed my stressed look. It's really not attractive ;-).

Thanks for giving us a new blog today, Simon. Most considerate of you.

  • Comment number 32.

23 - Katy - Jesus Christ Superstar - when? Where? Tell me all (please)

  • Comment number 33.

I really enjoyed 2Day last year and I thought the pairings were inspired. What I heard from this year's offerings, and I admit it wasn't much, suggests there may have been more than a smidgeon of fortune in the previous ones combinations.

Jo Whiley's truly dreadful attempt at "Pop Master" was as far as I got before I was nudged over the fence.

Is Lord Ammo definitely on with Alex Lester this afternoon? From the schedule, it looks like Simon might be on his own.

Wordsmith has just emailed me a cracking new word:

Consuetudinary meaning customary. A bit of a tongue twister so I may have to confine it to my writing :0))

Stick of celery consumed. Off to walk the dogpoppets before heading out to a meeting.

Enjoy the rest of your day everyone and catch you later.

There'll be a Andrew Lloyd Webber talent hunt on ITV for a new 'Jesus' which is part of this ..

Ah ... I see. I think I may have switched on the radio at the right time - after 11 am?

  • Comment number 37.

#36 Katy, once I'd survived Tony Blackburn's aural assault I thought it would be all great but, alas, it wasn't to be.

I will be back to R2 for Simon; his hour of country promises to be the highlight.

*Dreaming: one day Lauren Laverne will be on R2 (ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh)*

  • Comment number 38.

    Howdy all!!

Anyone told Coffeebuzz there's a new blog? He's buzzing away on the previous one!!

Today is a better day, thankfully. Only worry is the baby bunny who has taken up residence in the front garden. Cats aren't allowed there but that won't stop Rosie if she sees the bunny!! Cross fingers that no chasing into the road occurs.

Wishing I could listen to 2Day..

  • Comment number 39.

35 - Katy - thanks for the link - v exciting news indeed. Not sure about NS as Mary though. Actually, I know all the words - do you think they might accept a middle-aged-clumsy-unemployed-ertswhile-kitchen-dancer instead?

    Hmmmm, perhaps not.....

  • Comment number 40.

38 - Hello Alex - I have popped back and invited CoffeeBuzz to join us all here for a cuppa. Good luck with the baby bunny situation!

Oh dear, just had to enter the serial number into the PC of a malfunctioning bit of kit. Put on my specs...........then had to borrow the magnifying top of Mini Hoffs' bug-jar so that I could actually see the numbers. If there was a three word option for today I suspect for me it would be 'Stronger Specs Necessary'.

Chores to do - see you later x

  • Comment number 41.

    Afternoon 2Dayers

Have had my boss visiting this morning, so although the radio has been on in the background I've not really been paying attention. Boss did say 'Is Steve Wright still on the radio?' ho, hum.

Nice to have a change from the play list regulars, and hopefully I'll be able to give this afternoon's shows a bit more attention.

I too am wishing I could listen in to 2Day. Good or not so good (and I wouldn't expect it all to be everyone's taste, that's just not possible), it's nice to hear people/music that you wouldn't normally come across.

#23 Very wise words indeed! Can't be doing with people who complain all the time that things aren't 'just so'.

#35 Jesus Christ Superstar - great show, fantastic tunes. But it finishes before the end of the story - there should be a Part 3...

    ;o)

#38 Oh dear, Alex. Hope baby bunny finds a new home.

  • Comment number 45.

Harry - wondering if you might be enjoying Ken's Orcadian Hour. Kris Drever currently doing some fine work with his guitar

Quote from him a few moments ago: " ... we have no genre distinctions here - traditional or rock - it's just music to us"

A man after my own heart methinks.

[Not that my heart is there for the taking]

  • Comment number 46.

Also meant to say - Jilly, welcome back! Sorry you've been feeling out of sorts, and glad you've been able to lurk and smile a bit.

Seems like it's been a bit of a tricky week for a number of blogpoppets. Group hug, anybody?

Take one day off and come back to a mountain of work and a grumpy boss!

I think the ithingy will be in use tomorrow night to listen to 2Day! work all day and an exercise class tonight = no radio listening!

Hope everyone who was poorly/stressed/fed up is feeling better/more relaxed/happier *please delete as appropriate*

#3 ah well, thank goodness for Mums eh? Sewing on the buttons will be a mission though, good luck!

#7 this is my dilemma, R6 usual choice this time of day, for Mark and Stewie, but it clashes with our leader's brief appearance on R2

#13 In our house evening meal is Tea (me) Supper (Mr e) or dinner (if we're having guests)

He has tea only in a cup...I have supper just before bed!

We agreed in the end to call it La Cena (Italian for dinner) while we were both learning the lingo as a compromise..

#15 I think the lack of sunshine doesn't help, don't you? I saw a report from Greece on the news the other night and yes, their finances are in worse repair than ours, BUT they have sunshine and people wearing shorts - AND don't have Hinge and Brackett installed in their house of commons (or equivalent).

My 3 worder I didn't have time to send yesterday was

    GETTING WEBBED FEET

The cycle path today is finally dry - but the drying brackish water on the land around it smells like somebody died and was then smeared in rotting fish! Eeuuuugh

#16 Saturday is bound sure to be fine and warm as I am WORKING 8am to 5pm (soz Harry I know you have to do it all the time) please can someone pop on the blog to keep me company??!

#36 quite enjoyed Zoe Ball on this morning, with her big band stuff - that was a brave choice to put on that time in the morning, when I heard it was to be 'dance music' I feared the endless drone of Ibiza-type rave music, but Zoe did well with some stirring stuff from Wilson Picket, hope PSL heard it!

Making the most of my Friday off tomorrow doing an 8-miler around Thame, with a walking buddy - Kagouls, hip flasks, wellies, sun lotion, sun hats..got it all packed.

If I don't get on tomorrow, good luck with your ARFO choons all.

Great. Webcam option on my laptop has failed. Heard there was a good show to see starring two middle-aged blokes drinking green tea and playing country music. Guess I'm going to just have to imagine.....

  • Comment number 59.

57 - Harry - a metro-whattie? Blimey, I'm definitely not listening to the same show as you ;-)

  • Comment number 60.

#57 Am also watching online. Incredibly intimate camera work ...

  • Comment number 61.

60 - Kathryn - no, please, no more info, all I can see is a Radio 2 advert....

  • Comment number 62.

I'm always suprised, when watching the webcam, that they don't broadcast in darkness. Must be all those episodes of "Midnight Caller" :0)

  • Comment number 63.

Why can't we have the live streaming for Drivetime? Confessions, quiz and moshing, specifically, would work very well - and Nige, of course, save those twitter pic things that, in my opinion, never look particularly appetising.

#57 Not managed to glimpse the manicured nails yet.

  • Comment number 64.

Hurrah, well at least it's advertisers who will be funding Lloyd-Webber's auditioning process rather than the licence fee. That's good news I think. Now if only we could get them to do the same for Alan Sugar's business partner searches.

  • Comment number 65.

And why don't Simon + Alex have sparkly tops on? Thought that was the uniform for the day?

  • Comment number 66.

Oh my goodness, I am not sure what excites me more - the fact that I have actually managed to solve a technical problem without blowing something up, or that I can see Alex Lester drinking tea......

  • Comment number 67.

#61 Hoffs - stick with it - the "ad" pops up (usually when music is being played), and then it returns back to the studio

  • Comment number 68.

    Good Afternoon All;

Thanks for the best wishes everyone :) Still not feeling too jolly, but getting there.

#57 I saw the manicured nails...

It's been a mixed bag on 2Day so far... Ooo what's happening? Technical difficulties!!!

  • Comment number 69.

Erm, who are we listening to now please? Some chap has just said that he has two microphones......

  • Comment number 70.

#63 Stressed, the manicured nails were quite visible as he was waiting to start broadcasting immediately following the news.

As for live streaming every Drivetime, I think that would be called television ;0)

  • Comment number 71.

....just as I sussed how to go online too!

  • Comment number 72.

#66 Hoffs - you solve your techy prob with the live stream --- and give the problem directly to them!

    heheh

  • Comment number 73.

I had a sneaky glimpse at the livestream - they could show 5 Live a thing or two.

#57 #63 I have a 'thing' about nails - don't like looking at untidy/bitten/grubby looking ones. One of the first things I notice about people when I meet them for the first time is what their fingernails look like.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 74.

Oh. Maybe I didn't actually blow something up this time......sorry if anyone is experiencing technical difficulties. I knew I shouldn't have had that whisky.....

Zoe - hello - hugs to you on this rainiest of days.....

    Is that Sally singing now?

  • Comment number 75.

#74 Thank you Hoffs :) *Whispers* It's pretty sunny here...

    And we're back...

  • Comment number 76.

#73 posted to soon - meant to add that yes, I've noticed Simon's nails before.

Although I can't help wondering if he might feel slightly taken aback when he checks the blog later to see what we've been up to, only to find we've been discussing his fingernails!

    ;o)

  • Comment number 77.

I'm liking the little yellow cheat sheet stuck on the wall on Simon's left, saying "This is BBC Radio 2, online, on digital radio, and on 88-91 FM". Just in case they forget!

  • Comment number 78.

Ah, there we are, I knew that a good old fashioned kick would work....

For a moment there, I was also getting a workout courtesey of 2Day as I hopped up and down to turn on the radio (sorry, Katy, wireless) and then off again as my laptop thingy decided whether it wanted to work or not.

73 - Deebee - hello!!!* (*hides hands behind back....) I look at shoes to see if they are shiny/clean or not.

#80 mention no names of those who were on earlier, Harry?

I *did* notice, that some of the presenters weren't using the control deck with all the sliders at all (which had a rather attractive protective plastic case over it), and were just talking, letting all the jingles and music and everything else to be done presumably in the production room through the glass.

  • Comment number 83.

#77 #79 LOL! Funny how they still manage to get it wrong sometimes...

Erm, do you think that's a large pocket on Simon's shirt?

*whispers* have we managed to get through the day without a certain red-haired cheeky chirpy chap interrupting everyone else's bit?

For those who have been liking what they've heard of The Deep Dark Woods on Bob's and others' shows, they are playing The Borderline on 29th August, if you're in striking distance of central London. £13.45 including all the fees, so a nice working person's price :-)

Would be great if Simon got them in for a post 6pm session as well while they're back here.

#51 Hoffs - I was suggesting employing the techniques, but with plain old tea, rather than the Orcadian amber nectar that KB was sampling.

#58 JBG - Like I said yesterday/the day before that/whenever "It's been one of those days"

Off to the coffee machine (avoiding JBG's minibar)...

Need to put my specs on (and get Mini-Hoff's magnifying bug catcher) but is that the Blockbusters screen on the TV to the left of Simon?

As I thought, this section of 2Day is particularly good. Loved the fiddle players whiskey quips, and Simons attempts at deflecting some of the comments.

I love the way that Simon and Sally both wave their arms and hands whilst talking as if to emphasize a point.

#29 Steve Wright also has his very own studio, the others all have to share. I don't think anyone else uses Steve's studio.

Encouraging number of posts considering there isn't a mensh chase today.

Amazing, the time difference, between the online and radio playback!

( too darn lazy to get up and turn radio off! )

OOp, is that a tweet coming up?

I've been enjoying Simon and the Dark Lord's Country music today, listening at work and the short drive home. I wonder if now and again Friday DT could be folk/country type requests for a change as there's too little of it on Radio 2, especially in the daytime!
