Drink Responsibly

Simon Mayo|09:29 UK time, Wednesday, 7 March 2012

Hooray for geeks for many are their rewards in the hearts of the foolish. After 4 and a half hours in the computer store, my life (and child 2's A level notes) were back on track and everybody could relax again. The nice man with a badge said they regularly have people in tears there, as they are told that as far as their laptop is concerned, they have lost everything. The combination of the glass of wine that they spilled on that keyboard and that data they didn't back up have spelt disaster. There is a moral here. Keep the wine away from your computer. You have been warned.

Also on the techie front, the man from BAIU seems to be on the case and fix on the way. He has promised. And he will deliver. And if he doesn't, a personal visit to you all will be planned...

Lots of love for Gretchen Peters yesterday. Great vocals, passionate lyrics and beautifully played. If you get the chance to see her on this tour, you really should, but don't forget the Jammie Dodgers. Proper music indeed.

So today we welcome Saturday Kitchen star James Martin to the show. James is part of the BBC Good Food Show Spring along with the Masterchef guys and many others. James holds the world record for carrot chopping (515g in one minute in case you were wondering). And I was thinking of kitchen oldies but we have touched on that recently with the Masterchef series so if we can't do kitchen, let's do SATURDAY instead. Saturday oldies please to lighten our Wednesday DT.

So have a glitch-free and smooth-running Wednesday, see you after 5.

#2 - Morning Billie - by the way, I keep wanting to say, don't ever stop your foodie posts - always make me hungry! I think my little family would love to be sitting at your table right now - we are currently 'eating through the freezer before we move' and rather surprisingly, noses were turned up at last night's suggestion of burgers served in hot cross buns.............

  • Comment number 16.

    Morning all

    Grey, drizzly day here.

Apologies for duplication, but the green box kept appearing (looking forward to a personal visit ....)!

SATURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTING - Sir Elt

    Back later

    Tortie x

PS Billie - from yesterday's blog; head/neckache still there - painkillers have been administered - thanks for asking.

  • Comment number 17.

    Morning all,

First thing that comes to mind:

'Showing Out (Get Fresh At The Weekend)' - Mel & Kim

  • Comment number 18.

#11 Shona - oh yes, just a lovely song. Please can I 2nd Perfect Day....

I'll also add (with almost no hope of it getting played as an oldie - but perhaps as a lead-in to Bob's show one night)

American Saturday Night - Brad Paisley

  • Comment number 19.

SATURDAY NITE - Earth Wind & Fire

    SATURDAY'S CHILD - Monkees

  • Comment number 20.

    #8 Hoffs, happy to share X It's a great tune isn't it?

  • Comment number 21.

Also, would it be very un-PC to ask that anything by 'The Saturdays' could perhaps be given a miss today?!

Talking of PC's (the other kind) - good news on your restoration to technological normality Simon - 'phew' for the A' level notes. That could have been a serious disaster!

  • Comment number 22.

    Probably more repeats, but:

    SATURDAY's CHILD - The Monkees

SATURDAY NITE - Earth Wind & Fire

And for the Tony Blackburn Hat of Shame:

    SATURDAY NIGHT - Whigfield

    I'll get my coat...........................

    #16 Hi Tortie!

  • Comment number 26.

    #18 Autum_Gale, share and share alike X

It's a cracking day here today after very blustery winds during the night.

I feel it's coffee and banana time now. Red banana, yellow banana, red banana, yellow banana - choices, choices.

  • Comment number 27.

#20 - yes definitely - off to play it now to accompany my box packing. Flagging, need lovely music...

  • Comment number 28.

    Good morning everyone.

After a night of heavy rain and storm force winds (well, errrm, that might be a bit of an exaggeration but the wind was quite strong), it's another sunny day here in Cumbria.

On the theme of Saturday, we have a rare opportunity to play one of the greatest songs ever written about the promise, and ultimate disappointment, of the weekends of our youth:

THE HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT by TOM WAITS

I know it won't be played even though, at less than 4 minutes, this is probably as radio-friendly as Tom Waits gets.

  • Comment number 29.

    7 DAYS - STING

I CANT WAIT FOR THE WEEKEND TO BEGIN - MICHAEL GRAY

Has already been wed n windy here in Wigan, rain now on the decline but wind still evident. Someone told me at the crossing outside school this morning that I was very brave to be there in this weather. Brave eh? or perhaps stupid! The things I get into for the love of my daughter.

Happy days all, time to clean some windows me thinks.

  • Comment number 32.

MATCH OF THE DAY - Genesis

  • Comment number 33.

No Hoffs, it's not Un-PC but there are no rules regarding what makes a good record or a bad one. And I love...

    UP by THE SATURDAYS.

I love Gretchen Peters/Juan Zelada etc but I also love 3 minute bubblegum pop - there's no room for musical snobbery in a house with a 9 and 12 year old.

  • Comment number 34.

Wow how could we have missed that fab EW&F track? Classic!

Anyone got any ideas how to persuade Zebedee that he really doesn't need me to accompany him every time he needs to go out into the garden? Especially in this weather!

  • Comment number 39.

I opted for a banana dressed as a Danish pastry in the end.

#36 As I always suspected, Billie, you're lady of very fine taste :-)

"Looking for the Heart fo Saturday Night" is one of my all-time favourite albums and I never tire of it. It should have a wider audience and who better to further the cause than Mr Mayo on Drivetime :-D

    FUNKY WEEKEND...THE STYLISTICS

  • Comment number 44.

#41 Jilly, I think, from the views over the Solway this morning, where the sun was shining brightly while I was driving through heavy rain, the sunny weather is making it's way south ................. not sure how long it will take to make it all the way though.

  • Comment number 45.

#38 Yes please Hoffs. Toss one over here. X

    Green boxes again :(

  • Comment number 47.

#42 Harry - Thanks for that - I also put "Whigfield" in the same post! Ha!

  • Comment number 48.

I will say a proper "good morning" now. Got over-excited about suggesting tunes. Not surprised that every one of mine are a duplicate!

Dark, wet and windy here. No Ziggy today - weather too foul. Rosie has just come in (soggy moggy) and is now on my lap, sucking my jumper. Nice - she is soggy and I am going to be all gummy.

Jilly, from yesterday - thanks for the job offer! Sounds a perfect role! How is the shoulder? Mine is bad when the weather is wet but all the gardening seems to be helping with improving flexbility.

Tortie, hope you feel better. Saw your FB message - will reply.

Hoffs, good luck with the packing. Best thing we did with our move in October was to get the removal company to do all the packing. A real treat and well worth it. We still have boxes to unpack!

  • Comment number 49.

#33 - Rostronposkett, goodness, sorry, didn't mean to come across as a muscial snob - entirely the opposite, I know nothing about music! Just fancied a break, that's all - The Saturdays are a particular favourite of all three of my boys - especially when they can watch as well as listen (can't think why).

As for my youngest, we lurch from Alvin and the Chipmunks through Guns n'Roses and Def Leppard (Pour Some Sugar on Me - live version - more 'grunting' opportunities) to Agadoo and then back again. I love it!

  • Comment number 50.

Decided on a two-parter....................didn't want to risk the twirly thing not loading!....................................................................................................

SATURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT - ELTON JOHN

SATURDAY IN THE PARK - CHICAGO

FRIDAY NIGHT, SATURDAY MORNING - THE SPECIALS

    HAPPY DAYS - JIMMY HAAS

A NIGHT ON THE TOWN - BRUCE HORNSBY

SATURDAY NIGHT - WHIGFIELD..............so HtS can practice his dance moves!

    Dougal x....................................................................................................

  • Comment number 51.

I forgot to say earlier, I loved Gretchen Peters last night, both the interview with our man and her songs. Think I'll give her latest CD a whirl.

#48 Why is Rosie sucking your jumper Alex? I've not heard of that before!

    T x

  • Comment number 52.

#48 - AlexG - thanks for the advice - yes, I think I am going to get the removal company to do most of it but we are going to have to move some things ourselves. Unfortunately we have accumulated so much stuff whilst we have been living here that I need to have a massive clear out first, which is what I should be doing now! Take care of that shoulder now and good luck with the garden.....

  • Comment number 53.

#26 red bananas?? Do you live near Sellafield (other nuclear power plants are avail etc etc)

#48 Know what you mean, busy tweeting my suggestions...just to come on here and find all the same things! I think Elt is a show-in surely? I suppose it means we are all on the same wavelength, at least. Nothing ambiguous about this theme..

I did suggest on twitter DIVINE COMEDY and SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND, also David Bowie and Nick Drake.

There's also a lovely mellow song on the Neil Diamond LP '12 songs' called SAVE ME A SATURDAY NIGHT - and in case you've never thought of listening to Neil Diamond, or at least not for many years - here is that gawjus song:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uwb5ymUN4jU

Off now, gotta hear popmaster and get some caffeine in my system!

By the way, got a 3 word Weds ready:

HORRID CYCLE RIDE and/or RAIN IN FACE

    I got to work DRIPPING...

    Aaaaaatichoooo

  • Comment number 54.

#26 Shona - there are red bananas? I've obviously missed something. However your ultimate choice of a 'Danish' banana sounds the best choice :)

Nice to see you back Cutbush

Re: Whigfield - I'm right there with you Harry on the dance floor. I regularly the floor routine at the uni disco ...... I can still remember every move *shame*(although to be fair it's not exactly difficult choreography!)

Sorry to hear you're not feeling great Tortie .. hope the painkillers are kicking in

  • Comment number 55.

    Now to Saturday choons:

  • Comment number 56.

I too enjoyed Gretchen Peters and really enjoy when Whispering Bob plays her as well.

I best get on with some work now.

    Catch you later.

    Shona x

  • Comment number 57.

#51 No idea Tortie! She just does. I think it is because she was the runt of the litter and didn't get much "Mum time", so she suckles on other things. It is only one particular jumper she likes - when it falls apart, I am going to have to keep a piece for her. I have a cuddly dog and Rosie sucks his ears. Daft mogpoppet.

  • Comment number 58.

Hoffs, Its hard to convey the correct humourous light touch in a message. I negelected to include some excalamation marks!! And I'm no good at smiley semi colons etc.

Isn't that strange - The Saturdays are a visual favourite in our boy-dominated house too...! Many a heated debate on whether Frankie Saturday is our favourite or not! (I'm a 'yes' on that one).

As I'm here I might as well suggest another Saturday tune:

BORN SLIPPY - Underworld (for its 'Lager Lager' refrain)

  • Comment number 59.

    Hi Simon and everyone.

Glad you got the hard drive sorted and thank you for arranging the blog fix and if not satisfactory I will greet the fix team with open arms on their visit to us all.

I have been put forward for a 4 month contract at OFWAT as a Temporary Accountant that starts in 2 weeks time ( my current contract ends 31st March!) I know someone there who was recently recruited as she interviewed me for this contract. Should here this week if i have an interview as they start interviewing next week and it is in Central Birmingham!

  • Comment number 60.

Must go now. Enjoy your day everyone, despite the wind and the rain. We will be listening to the show tonight in the car on the way to a play in which my son is taking part.

Can I just say one more thing though?

Thinking very very much of the families of the soldiers missing in Afghanistan, today. Absolutely devastatingly tragic news.

Sorry to be maudlin, but an issue close to my heart.

    See you soon x

BLACK COFFEE IN BED - SQUEEZE

HERE COMES THE WEEKEND - DAVE EDMUNDS

A FAMILY AFFAIR - SLY & FAMILY STONE

  • Comment number 63.

Back re-fuelled with coffee and cake YAY!

Belated morning all to DT team, bloggers old, new and lurking, and the relieved DT dude, I FEEL YOUR COMPUTER PAIN - perhaps preparing to write some A level coursework up himself to save the angst of a teenage child...been there, done that.

When our old PC died during A levels and my #1 daughter's English A level coursework was (luckily) in the form of handwritten notes (cos people did that first, didn't they, before starting the typing?) I offered to re-type for her - even tho it was not my fault it crashed, obviously..

2nd PC was called 'The miracle computer, don't let us down this time' and all coursework was backed up on floppies (remember those!!?)

    Too early for a HOIB?

Bazza Manilow and WEEKEND IN NEW ENGLAND...

Ok, ok I'm off who threw that banana?

  • Comment number 64.

Just a quick pop back to say

    #54 Autumn_Gale, red bananas have the words K*t K*t on them :)

Mandy, fingers crossed for a new contract.

    Hoffs, terrible news indeed.

  • Comment number 65.

    #57 Daft, but sweet, Alex!

    Can I please second

    # 53 Suzieee - SAVE ME SOME SATURDAY NIGHT - Neil Diamond

    # 61 Dougal - BANANA PANCAKES - Jack Johnson

  • Comment number 66.

    Good luck Mandy

Shona - ahhhh it makes sense now - you're a woman after my own heart :)

  • Comment number 67.

    Morning all

    Some suggestions for consideration:

SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL - LYNYRD SKYNYRD

SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING - BAP KENNEDY

ONE MORE SATURDAY NIGHT - GRATEFUL DEAD

  • Comment number 68.

For those not in the know there is an alternative spelling for red bananas ... KitKat ;)

#48 Alex at the moment I am still wallowing in the relief provided by a recent cortisone injection which (touch wood) is still staving off the worst of the pain. But I definitely do suffer more when it is wet and cold. I am also still trying to work out the fine balance between working it enough to improve flexibility and working it too much and being in agony! It is a steep learning curve for me at the moment.

#44 Harry could you hurry it along a bit please ;) This dog, unfortunately, will not walk herself.

#59 Hope you get the call for the interview Mandy, fingers crossed.

  • Comment number 69.

Interesting that Gretchen says she gets played more here than in the States. I occasionally enjoy the targeted nature of American radio so will tune in to Americana stations on the net and I'm sure I've heard Gretchen play on WDVX, for example. But I guess if you're based in Nashville and routinely include cello on your albums that puts you in the "can't be categorised easily" bracket so you potentially end up not being played on the more narrowly focussed stations.

Anyway, long may she continue to just write songs and use cello on them as they are brilliant.

  • Comment number 70.

Late again. Ah, the joys of Project Management.

I came here to suggest something that's already been suggested, but I'll still suggest it cos it's one of the most beautiful little tunes I've ever heard.

    NICK DRAKE - Saturday Sun

    But not suggested yet,

JOHN FOGERTY (or Dave Edmunds) - Almost Saturday Night

LLOYD COLE AND THE COMMOTIONS - Lost Weekend

  • Comment number 71.

Laptop back to tip-top - Yeah! The show yesterday with Gretchen Peters was remarkable as she was fantastic and my digital radio never sounded better. DT team can we please have the phone number to call to vote for Matt somewhere on the S.Mayo site or in the blog? I could not jot the number down fast enough as our Matty-sporty ray of sunshine rattled all of them off.

Itch just arrived and W0W- love the cover with the periodic table black on black backround. Boy and I are going to read it together and still don't feel too old to do that.

These Days by Natalie Merchant would be a good pick. ;)

    I'd like to heartily second

    I LOVE SATURDAY - Erasure

  • Comment number 76.

    Good morning all.

Wet and windy this morning but it does seem to be trying to lighten up a bit.

I love reading your posts Alex - I have this picture in my mind of your home and garden looking like something out of the Darling Buds of May - idyllic rural life as it used to be!

SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES by THE DRIFTERS would be my choice today - cheerful and smile-making.

Having said last week that I felt the atmosphere on the blog was a bit 'gloomy' and not being agreed with on a few fronts, it seems to have lightened up again. Perhaps it is the gathering excitement of Harry's nuptials?! Are you taking the soon-to-be Mrs S to a sunkissed isle for a honeymoon Harry?

Also the promise that the rainbow boxes are to be a thing of the past is good-we live in hope!!

Off to ELH store with my 'friend' - perhaps he could take over Alan Carr's timeslot instead of the middle of the night?

    JW

  • Comment number 77.

#76 Jennie, no honeymoon paradise getawayplanned .......... unless she's planning to surprise me!

We've both done a lot of travelling over the years (we spent 6 months touring France and Spain in the early 90s) and we're both now of the opinion that, à la Dorothy Gale, there's no place like home :-)

  • Comment number 78.

So tonight I make my first visit to White Hart Lane since the early 80s when I went purely so I could watch Glen Hoddle and Jesper Olsen (I think it was a Spur v Man U League Cup game), two players I admired even though not supporting either club. An Arsenal fan on a course couldn't understand how I could set foot in the place if I didn't support either team. I replied "tribal nonsense clearly lives on" :-).

Seem to recall standing on something call "the shelf" along one side of the ground. Standing in an upper tier seemed very weird.

  • Comment number 79.

#64 ah that's a relief, I thought the marketing people had dreamed up some new gimmick to make kids eat fruit...

I had my banana in the shape of a piece of banana cake, so hey, that's one of my 5 a day, right?

#77 honeymoons can be over-egged, specially when you've been together for AGES!

Remind us of the date of the nuptials so we can have a virtual wedding breakfast with you in the sylee of the Blogger Xmas online Party (a night I only vaguely remember...)

#78 I have happy memories of 'The Shelf' - I used to be a regular there back in the days of Glenn et al. My Arsenal supporting husband (washes mouth out) was not so impressed when I took him there for the first time to watch a Spurs v. Arsenal derby. The Gooners in the next stand were chanting some quite ripe language towards the said Shelf and as the hubby was incognito so to speak (for the sake of self protection!) he just had to keep quiet for the whole 90 minutes, lol.

    Happy Days ;)

Just in from a very windy walk, but the sky is blue and the sun is shining, and the mildness of the past couple of weeks seems to be making our grass grow at a rate of knots and needs cutting again, so that's my first job after lunch.

I hope Deebee's mum is up and about, recuperating well.

#69 Ken, when Terry Wogan was on in the mornings, he often played Gretchen Peters' songs and said how much he liked her music. She was so good last night and for me, much, much better than Carole King was a couple of months ago.

#76 Jennie Wren, if you mean Richard Allinson, I agree with you. Richard is sooo underused on Radio 2 and if they have to save money, I'm sure he wouldn't cost as much to employ as Steve Wright in the afternoons (apologies to SW fans)!!!

Shona, like you, I'm sorry that Alan Carr won't be doing his Saturday night show and I wonder who will do it and will Alan take Mel with him as their laughing was so infectious and Saturday night car drives to a concert or whatever, were always more fun with Alan and Mel and some of their amusing guests chatting or on the Carreoke!

Here's a late tune and not sure if anyone else has chosen it....

#86 Suzieeeeee, it's only a small affair with about 10-12 friends coming to the registry office and then back to ours for drinks and cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off.

There may be dancing but nothing strenuous enough to put my back out.

#76 #85 Would LOVE to hear Richard Allinson doing something other than his graveyard shift 3.45am and no, I am NOT 'up about and at 'em' at that time...when he stands in (esp CLP or SW times) it makes my day.

But I do like Zoe as Ken Bruce's stand-in, she's such a ditzy blonde...makes me feel at home..

#87 are you compiling an ipod/CD/Cassette (!) selection marked 'wedding' for the background music at the 'do'?

    What will it contain..do tell

What would your ideal music be (or is going to be) as Mrs Snapper-to-be walks in - and as you two walk out?

Trying to imagine Transvision Vamp's I WANT YOUR LOVE - pretty sure that could be a first!

Afternoon from a blustery Horsforth. I'm not sure if I can look in as much in the mornings as I used to - people are retiring here at an alarming rate and I have more tasks to perform as well as stamping my bits of paper. hey ho, it pays the bills. As well as SATURDAY (brilliant suggestions as always) there's KITCHEN to consider.

JONA LEWIE - YOU WILL ALWAYS FIND ME IN THE KITCHEN AT PARTIES.

like the idea of a 'mix tape' for the wedding party here on the blog....

sporting some rather fetching nails, they look like C*dburys Minstr*ls delicious ;-)

#77 - Myself and the Mr are of the same opinion as regards holidays - very overrated!! We would much prefer to stay chez nous and save all those endless hours waiting around at airports etc. When the day of the Star Trek transporter arrives we may reconsider!

#85 88 - Florence, Suzie - that would suit me too - three hours of something new in the afternoon is good, especially if it's Richard Allinson (not keen on Chris Tarrant for too long!)

#89 Can't play Transvision Vamp; I have to keep my mind on just one woman that day and it had better not be Wendy James :-)

We're having two instrumentals, Pat Metheny's "Last Train Home" going in and Grieg's "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen" (orchestral version) coming out, with Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" while we take care of the formalities.

#48 my cat Freddie Mc Fee a poor wee runt who only weighed 375g when we got him likes to num-num the angora throw on the sofa! He was so poorly when he came as his mother had been run over and he was hand reared so came early to is new home (us) the vet had to use the drug scales to weigh him. He's a fine chap now and almost 6.

PSL - your nails sound fab. Although anything that reminds me of chocolate is probably not a good idea.

Harry - your music choices are lovely. Whether you use it or not, a 'blog-tape' for the party sounds like a project for us to get our teeth into :)

What about the Happy Days Theme Tune...

I'm really enjoying Maura O'Connell's "Blue is the Colour of Hope" album at the moment. Although it's certainly not appropriate for a wedding celebration, it would be great for a divorce, this is on of the highlights for me:

And, keeping you all up to speed with the weather in Cumbria, as I type, we're in the middle of a most ferocious hail storm :-S

#73 Pubquiz. The references to 'six' in your choices. You've opened a can of worms there. Saturday, the sixth day of the week. Or is it? Try looking online to find out. I was always taught that Saturday was the seventh day of the week, especially in Christian countries, but attempts have been made to standardise Saturday as the sixth, and in international law, I suspect that it is. But that opinion is in no way unanimous. So, standardisation? What do you lot think? And could this be a subject for Simon to revisit with an 'expert'?

  • Comment number 99.

#82 Suzieee - I think you clearly do understand!!

Although you're absolutely right - there's no illegality asscoiated with drinking Lager on a weekday (unless you're a CAMRA member) - I would tentatively suggest that there are quite a few town centres awash with Lager on a Saturday particularly!!
