50+ posts before 10? How come the "middle aged" theme inspires such enthusiastic mensh chasing? :-)



Too many already suggested above so I won't add my musings to the pile.



However, I would like to make one suggestion about the whole of Radio2's daytime output (not just 2Day): could we have more album tracks, and not just singles, between 5am and 7pm?



Radio2 after 7 is arguably the finest radio output anywhere in the world because of its diversity. Why can't we have little more of this mix during the day?



Gretchen Peters was fantastic on Tuesday but would Drivetime play one of her tracks if she wasn't guesting? Last month, Drivetime showcased some great acts that were appearing at the Folk Awards but these artists are never played at any other time. Why?

#59 totally agree Harry - I think Drivetime does the best job of diversity in a 'prime-time' slot and the post 7.00pm specialist programmes are incredibly varied but the day-time playlist is repetitive and often quite bland.



So to oldies - lots of lovely choices already so I'll only add 2:

DT team (doffs cap reverentially), bloggers, both the old, middle-aged and spring chickens amongst us, plus of course the DT Dude who did a whole section of the show yesterday just for Shona (Banana special)!! How thoughful.

Speakings as someone at the summit of her existence, if this is the best it gets...crickey I feel rough!

Cycling in yesterday and getting cold and wet = sneezing galore and playing the nose whistle like Mrs Moog was last night on Twi*ter - we could start a duet, there must be a 'talent' show that would take us! (the kind where a man hitting his head with a tea-tray to music is given airtime, methinks)



Re R2day - I thought it was brill, great to have a mix-up of DJ's and their music choices, it was a great way to introduce people who listen at various times (on way to work, cooking tea, etc) to new music/shows/people/genres. Can't be a bad, in anyone's book, can it?



Bring Richard Allinson blinking out into the light of day, YES please.



And best of all the DJ's seemed to enjoy the day - and met some of their colleagues they only ever see once a year at the annual R2 Xmas bash, presumably in a seedy pub around the back of R2 towers...

The canteen had run out of yellow bananas this morning :( So instead my banana has an orange coat and says T*ff*e C**sp on it. I don't even have a sweet tooth but I always need a wee energy boost around this time. I really should eat breakfast.

#68 PSL, I agree there should be more soul. And jazz. And every other genre. I don't see any reason why daytime radio shouldn't challenge us all a little by playing a few things out of the ordinary. Does it really have to be only singles that have charted? I'm not saying chart hits should be abandoned entirely.



I think I'm trying to say that daytime Radio2 should revisit the BBC's Reithian dictum: "educate, inform, entertain" and apply it to popular music.



Or maybe I'm just talking myself into buying a new digital radio for the car so that I can listen to 6Music all day ;-)

For R2day I think Simon should be teamed up with Johnnie Walker - their combined wealth of musical knowledge would make for a very interesting show. In fact, there wouldn't be much time left to actually play any tracks... but it would be really good to hear some music that doesn't generally get played on Radio 2. Such as Show of Hands, who Simon opened with on last year's R2day, or Smith and Burrows who he played at Christmas - both acts I wouldn't otherwise have heard, and both I immediately loved. Oh, and could it please be either before 9 o'clock, between 1 and 2 or after 4.30. Thank you, from one of the Drivetime elite... ;o)

#59 #73 Spot on Harry. I think one of the radio reviewers in the press made that point when 2Day happened last year. The controllers meet a stack of the BBC Trust obligations by "shunting" some of them into the post 7pm slots. Of course as you've alluded to that makes for some fantastic radio on the specialist shows, but it means that the music output of much of the daytime rota is "same old, same old" and inevitably hit single based.



They do have the occasional album on the playlist, but I would really love to see the end of the over-reliance on singles during the day.



Radio 2 should have the confidence to allow producers and and presenters to just let rip and play whatever they think makes a balanced show that the listeners will enjoy. Would people really stop listening if they hear something that's not a hit single and they don't know? The way Gretchen's latest album and her "best of" moved up the Amazon sales charts on Wednesday suggests that people who maybe weren't aware of her before really enjoyed it and rather than switching off were going and spending money.

Morning! What a lovely day here on the hilltop. Am just back from my 6 year old's class assembly - a real tear jerker as it will be his last at the school. He got a special mention for eating all his lunch on the Victorian trip last week. Pass the tissues please!

Shona, your Foghorn Leghorn impression made me laugh! I shall be picturing a big white rooster whenever I read your posts now ;)



Florence, re Masterchef I had a little soft spot for Jay. I know he was the least talented of the four in a way but I loved his heart and the softness that was beneath that macho exterior. I do think Andrew over-complicates but I think it's just in his eagerness to show what he can do. Shelina is a bit too safe (although her dishes always look fantastic) and Tom is a bit too hit and miss and chaotic. I think there are three programmes on for the final next week.



Gazza, I hope your card arrived today!



I really enjoyed R2Day last time. One request at the moment.. can they put Mr Evans on at a time when he isn't constantly 'popping in' and taking airtime from the other presenters ;)



Hoffs.. the old leaving the key in the door trick eh? I've done it a few times. It is especially embarrassing when someone knocks at the door and you open it to find your keys still in the lock. It's a good thing there are still plenty of honest people around.

#70 & #80 I like Bruce and watching him at Glastonbury (on telly box, not live and in person) was brilliant, but I am finding the "Wrecking Ball" album a tad dull and tedious. His "Empty Sky" album was the best post 9/11 album made - superb. I have made my feelings known re Coldplay before - dull, dull dull. The one that is really making me reach for the off button is that Emilie Sande song. Can't stand it. Loathe it. Have to walk away otherwise I start throwing things.



Totally agree with Harry - there should be more of a mix during the day. I love the 7pm shows and have learned so much from them, particularly Mike Harding as folk music wasn't on my radar before. Jamie has stepped comfortably into Humph's shoes and plays a great mix. I bought Mr P the Gretchen Palato album off the back of Jamie's playing her and also bought the Nat King Cole "After Midnight Sessions" which is just blissful.



Trying to work out whether to plant the carrots with the onions, or in separate beds that are next to each other. They need to be close to prevent carrot fly but then Titch says that shallots don't like competition so need to be separate. Decisions, decisions.........

#59 Harry, Interesting points of view. Your point about the Folk Awards and Gretchen Peters is very valid. I don't particularly have a view on your album track point but would say I don't just listen to Radio 2 for the music. I enjoy all the presenters (yes really - even SW) and love the way they keep me company through the day.



I personally think the night time specialist music programmes are played at the right time of the day. In the evening it's possible to sit, listen properly and enjoy them. As much as I like listening to Brian Matthew's Sounds of the Sixties on Saturday mornings I wonder if this is now something of a specialist programme that would be better in the evening?

Re Ideas for 2 Day: Simon, did you listen to the CD I sent you last autumn? It was called "Where We Are" and it's by our friends Southgate & Leigh. All completely orginal stuff. They are actually doing quite well. Their music has been used on an MTV show and they are opening for Joan Armatrading in Aldershot in June. Why not use your part of 2 Day to showcase new talent like them?
