Clunk-click

Simon Mayo|08:07 UK time, Thursday, 22 March 2012

A cab that stinks of fags is a pretty revolting start to the day but that is my lot this morning. We are heading to Waterloo and the driver alternates between Jenson Button-style bursts of speed and traffic jam crawl. His bone-rattling people carrier is vibrating and shaking like we're in some kind of earthquake and I'm sure I never used to wobble like this. The only thing that's rattling more is his chest. I might not make it to Waterloo but he might not make it to 60. Maybe the increase in the price of fags might help....

Hopefully I'll be in Guildford by the time you read this (and not the local A&E) chatting to some fantastically charming kids about books and stuff and then training it back on the Radio 2 Express (no reservation needed, just your Ken Bruce Popmaster t-shirt). Nigel delights again with some cakes tonight. I think we went for chocolate and ginger or something but anyway, the smell of the cake shop will be part of our show tonight.

And oldies. Well I think it's ONE DIRECTION ARE NUMBER ONE IN AMERICA oldies time. Let's be honest very few thought the 3rd rating X Factor boys had what it takes to crack the States. But their album has gone in straight to number one so respect is due. Hit records, no.1s, boys, America etc...all fine with me.

Have a sunny and adventurous Thursday, see you after 5,

Morning everyone. A quick visit for the moment on a lovely spring morning - although it was surprisingly chilly when I left the house this morning without a coat.

Today is a cause for celebration though as it's the first day of the new year I've got my open-toes on - yay! I don't care what the weather does now - there's no going back and my feet are free :)

Thank you so much for playing the Marvelettes last night and for the lovely mensh (which Mr P missed, even though he was in the car and heard the song). PSL suggested it too so an OSM for her!

Well done to Rostronposket and Regular Blogger John! Did laugh at Simon stumbling over the name!

Totally glorious morning here. Unfortunately, I will mainly be indoors preparing for the Mother's State Visit this weekend.

Rosie has a new game. From one of the kitchen worktops, she can jump onto the top of the kitchen door. From there, she can jump to the top of the cupboards, where she sits like a little owl. If you don't know she is there, it can be quite startling when she suddenly squeaks at you!

Hmmm... As was actually proved on Tuesday evening, there is only one officially sanctioned 'regular blogger' here... Ho, ho.

And hey, what I may (or may not) lack in regularity I more than make up for in quality...

The only thought that occurs re. today's theme is:

GO WEST - PSBs or VILLAGE PEOPLE would do, although I'm not sure why it occurs to me or how it fits in with the theme - America being west of here? Who knows.

In any event, wishing you all Thursdays that are anything but 'regular'.

  • Comment number 44.

    WHAT CAN I SAY...BOZ SCAGGS

  • Comment number 45.

    Morning all,

DT team, DT Dude (basking in sunny Surrey eh?) bloggers, petpoppets and of course any toepoppets who are making an early appearance...

#35 the mensh drought is not a problem, always room on the bechod bench with me, we have chilled wine, nibbles and a nice view of the radio!

    Re theme:

I'm sorry to say that the first thing that came to mind was

AMATEUR HOUR by Sparks...I know, I know, JUST 'cos they were manufactured by a TV show, doesn't mean they can't produce something someone wants to listen to - I mean, THE MONKEES were a manufactured band, weren't they?

So, thinking cap on and prejudices cast aside, had another go:

BACK ON TOP by Van the Man

    MUSIC FOR MONEY Nick Lowe

    DOING ALRIGHT by Queen

AMERICAN GIRL by Tom Petty (for the music purchasers in the US of A)

NEW YORK MINUTE by Billy Joel (perchance they will last longer than that..)

and as they are touring the US:

HOME THOUGHTS FROM ABROAD by Clifford T Ward

and SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT Nirvana (especially for the 'tour bus' whiff)

All fairly transcendental so I'll be plumping up my cushion on the Bechod bench around 5pm...

Back laters for some craic, I need to tell you all about my night out in a local restaurant where there was an AMERICAN superstar (in her own words..)

  • Comment number 46.

EDDI READER - JOKE (I'M LAUGHING)

  • Comment number 47.

THE HOUSEMARTINS - FIVE GET OVER EXCITED

(I Wiki'd it. There are five of them. They will be excited. I rest my case).

  • Comment number 48.

BARBARA DICKSON - TELL ME IT'S NOT TRUE

  • Comment number 49.

WHAT BECAME OF THE LIKELY LADS - THE LIBERTINES

See? I'm the only one blogging at the moment. How much more regular could I get?

  • Comment number 50.

Hmm interesting subject, unfortunatly cant think of anything that hasent been suggested.

Missed much of the show yesterday due to being GLUTENED at tea time by a rouge bread crumb. Spent the rest of the evening passed out on the couch snoring loudly (apparently). During this time I drempt that I was not only back at school, but that Lord Ammo was visiting to give his talk. Dont remember much of the talk, only that I was discusted to be back at school.

Hope your all well on this extra fine morning, and not too shaken up by taxi drivers.

#45 Looking forward to joining you on the bechod bench again, Suzieeeeee - just one question, why is it necessary to actually see the radio...?

Alex - any news on a boy cat for Mr P?

Regular blogger Andrew... I'm sorry to say you can't claim sole rights to that title - I was referred to as 'regular blogger' by our esteemed leader ages ago - a year or more. Can't remember which song it was for, but I do remember being pretty chuffed about it at the time!

    ;o)

  • Comment number 59.

#58 in fact I think his actual words were "she's one of our regular bloggers..."

I think a few others have had the title bestowed upon them as well. It's good to be in such esteemed company, isn't it...

  • Comment number 61.

    Morning all

So after booking a couple of gigs last night I then discovered that Tom Waits is playing "Under the Bridge" (the bridge being Stamford), in June I think as part of a blues festival. Payday tomorrow and just as well as I think that's a ticket I have to have. The chance to hear "Til I Get My Lovin' Back" from "Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns" sung live can't be missed!

If you locked me up in a room and played me a One Direction song I would have no idea what it is, even after you told me what it is :-)

You have to get up with the larks to beat this lot!

#58 it's not, just a nice thought....in the Olden Days of Yore, people used to gather around the Radiogram and actually LOOK at it, (apart from the mother who was maybe darning socks or turning collars) I like to imagine a nuclear family, watching the flickering crystal of the Radiogram....

#60 I'm thinking of changing my blogger name, as I have been on the Bechod bench with many an OSM for too long now......thinking caps on for a new tongue-twister name (Rostronposkett did a fine job yesterday!)

Oh and in case anyone's interested, it was Ruby Wax sat in the restaurant with me and my ladies' darts team annual outing...I am sure she was amused...not!

We got free puds, as the service was diabolical - plus the food presentation ranged from 1-10 but hey, we got to star-spot all night!

Turns out that Ruby is in Oxford at Kellogg College doing a Master's Degree in mindfulness based cognitive therapy - so my spies tell me.

    Crazy prices IMHO

  • Comment number 68.

    Surely Mr C's ringtone....

  • Comment number 69.

#60 Of course you are special... just not exclusively special...

#63 I know a bit about mindfulness cognitive therapy - it was developed here in Cambridge by an ex-colleague of mine.

#66 Ken, I've only been to the Portland Arms once for a gig, and that was years ago. I remember it being crowded and very hot - don't remember anything about the music so they can't have been much good! I used to work with someone who had a band, and they played there a few times.

#65 Irregular Andrew, I love that Stranglers song, was going to suggest it myself, but I'll just second your suggestion. Great lyrics!

    FOR AMERICA - RED BOX

THE TIDE IS HIGH - BLONDIE

    MY GENERATION - THE WHO

I'm also going to pitch a song that will probably earn my the HOIB for LIFE! But here goes, for all One Direction's young fans...

IT'S 'ORRIBLE BEING IN LOVE WHEN YOUR 81/2 - CLAIRE AND FRIENDS

  • Comment number 71.

#67 That's the one Suzieeeeee. John Hiatt is £27.50 (plus a £4 booking fee which is extortionate!!!!) so a bit more reasonable.

£17+£2 for The Civil Wars seems like a right bargain.

Van Morrison or his promoters, I'm afraid, are on a completely different planet to the one the rest of us inhabit.

  • Comment number 72.

#59 Deebee........in my opinion the moniker 'regular' is too ordinary for yourself.........I think 'stalwart' is more fitting for someone who 9 times out of 10 opens the blog in the morning with a chirpy message.....................................

So is Tom Waits performing with Mr Hiatt, or his he the extra special support?

I know there are days when even Rock Stars must need some surgical support, we all do.

RE Van the Sulky Man maybe the prices reflect the fact that due to the #grannytax of the budget yesterday, he's going to have to lower his consumption of Champers by a couple of bottles a day?? :-0

#61 Ken, I could be locked in a room with you and would not know a One Direction song! I know what JLS sound like and they're pretty popular, but I can't remember what One Direction sound like and the only lad I would recognise is Harry Styles because he was recently in the news for going out with a woman old enough to be his mother!

  • Comment number 83.

#61 Suzieeee... I can't imagine anyone wanting to pay £165.50 to see Van Morrison!! We're going to see him at the end of March and £65 a ticket was more than enough to pay and I hope he won't be too grumpy! Last time we saw him was at Edinburgh Castle and the Chieftains were with him but I doubt we'll be that lucky this time as they were better than he was and he muttered most of the time! He sounds like he's muttering here just last month, but nice to hear he's got a good band with him!

Suzieeeee, I blogged this late last night (after listening again to the show on iPlayer as I only came in at the end of U2 and when Simon said: "thanks to everyone who suggested that" I thought that was it!) but I'd never considered Rostronposkett to be that difficult to say! They are are 2 footballer surnames from yesteryear (the 80s) joined in blogger harmony! Its a hangover from the days when I used to contribute on the 606 forum and I've just not changed it. I like the fact that RBJ thought it might be a Cornish village so maybe it has some mystical merit...!

  • Comment number 85.

Suzieeee, it sounds like the bechod bench was pretty crowded yesterday with so many OSMs having been dished out! I'm wondering whether it needs extending to accommodate a few more no-mensh-OSM recipients, and maybe fit a wine cooler at one end, especially in this glorious weather!

#81 - sadly not, Deebee! He stays resolutely in one room while I sort everything out. Hopefully, when I get my laptop sorted he can be in the same room and lend a virtual hand!

The bechod bench could get a little crowded tonight if Kids in America does get played - many OSMs!

Off to sit by the pond for a while and enjoy the sunshine........

Just spent my lunchtime salivating over the fish counter in Oxford's covered market - just breathing it in makes me feel better, just like hanging around down at Mevagissey harbour when the boats are in!

BTW we are having swordfish steaks - I wanted Skate but although it's my fave, mr e is not the biggest fan. Steaks will be tossed in seasoned flour, cooked on a griddle then with a salsa thrown on at the last minute of garlic, wholegrain mustard, capers, oil, chopped spinach..nom nom

#81 Deebee Thanks for the info, it sounds like an interesting subject. I know a Dr at the Warneford hospital here (she's a singer in a choir we know via the local muso scene), so she must know about it, will tackle her when I see her in the pub on Sunday!

#83 Flo: nice youtube link, showing Van the Grumpy Man at his mumbly best! Yes, his band is brill, esp the sax player who seems to be the leader of the combo - they are worth going for - I think actually that Van may just possibly forget his words occasionally. Happens when you get old. We saw Oscar Peterson in Paris, he played a lovely song...then played it again...then later played it again, I think his band were somewhat surprised, but went with it manfully. The concert was filmed on a hand held camera by one of his family from the wings, it was pretty much one of his last outings before he passed away.

#85 LOVE the bench! So organic and cosy looking - wine cooler? YES you're talking my language.

Oh, I did get a mensh on R6 Mark Radcliffe & Stuart Maconie show yesterday, so I know I am not blacklisted on the BBC anyways....I love their show - now that Mr e is back from Paris I never get to lie in the bath and listen to the 8pm show as I used to, so now I can listen online DURING working hrs. Result.

    #84 606 forum? who he/it?

Cornish villages? Maybe I'll change my name to Botallack (lets see if that gets thru the modders) or Cadgwith (how DO you say that) or Delabole (rhymes with delasoul)..of to search out a suitable monika.

#88 Who's the sax player on the Grumpy link? Can't see it from work. If it's Richie Buckley he's brilliant. Nothing better than seeing them do Summertime in England/Common One with Buckley doing the call and refrain and then letting rip on the sax solo.

    But not work £165!

Good afternoon! Hope there's room for an irregular blogger ;-)

Good to see it's as busy and interesting as ever. Try to lurk but life just keeps getting in the way. How very dare it. At least I do get to listen to the show most nights, even if I can't mensh chase. My Norwegian isn't much better than when I moved almost 6 months ago (wow, where did that time go?) but I'm still pretty sure Norwegian radio just doesn't cut it. Too much Springsteen & Queen for some ;-).

Florence, Bryan Ferry at Edinburgh Castle was one of the best gigs ever. The most amazing venue.

Hope everyone is fine & dandy. You are all certainly having better weather.

    X

PS How fab was the 101 question feature last night? I don't care a jot about the subject but thought both Mr M and the good sport who was on the receiving end did a fine job. Very entertaining.

#91 Hi Mo *waves* I'll send you over some sunshine! I loved the 101 questions too - I hope they put that in the podcast.

Would love to go to a gig at Edinburgh castle. I don't much mind who's playing either...

Viking Mo, I was surprised at Simon posing all 101 questions at the very quick-answering Irish football (?) guy! I thought he might have just asked him 10 or so questions but both were very quick in asking and answering.

I agree about Edinburgh Castle being such an amazing venue for a gig and glad you loved Bryan Ferry. We've been to quite a few gigs there and other than people like Lionel Ritchie, Rod Stewart, Simply Red and Crosby Stills and Nash gigs, one that sticks in my mind was in 1992, when thanks to Radio Forth, I won tickets and hospitality plus albums, CDs etc to see the 'world premiere' of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells II which was shown live on TV and with a huge orchestra playing the whole album and it was just the most amazing 'haunting' atmosphere.

We set it to record at home and watched it again when we got back and could see ourselves as we were sitting beside the centre aisle, near the front... and all for free!!!

Afternoon all from sunny Surrey. Spring is definitely here as I have been sneezing like nobody's business today... blimmin' pollen!

Nice to see you popping in Mo :)

I agree with the 101 questions. Feel that it should be turned into a regular feature or do you think Simon was just lucky with such a great respondent?

Deebee, at Edinburgh Castle this summer, other than the Military Tattoo in August, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and Olly Murs are playing but I haven't heard any others mentioned yet and I don't fancy seeing either act. The Tattoo is a fantastic atmosphere and we've been a few times if we've had friends or relatives to stay who wanted to go, but it's much of a muchness. The last time we went, it was being filmed for TV, with Princess Anne and Sean Connery being guests of honour, which was a treat... although we were a few hundred people away from them!

I read earlier and did not quite comperhend the theme today so I bow out and now that the show is under way, ah..the penny drops-doh. Have my son home all this week from school who is suffering with a chest infection and working on xbox Battlefield 3 perfection as his homework is piling up in my email in box. Like the Van comments and YES to mumbling and the squishey-up, tight shut eyes too. Sure love his music.
