My own theory is that too much choice is a bad thing – without the likes of TOTP and John Peel and others to curate and filter and focus, they’re overwhelmed and drowning, and can’t find the good new stuff. So they stick to the stuff that’s already been proven and approved. But what do I know?

It was a lovely day here in Oxford yesterday, true - but today a bit o'ercast yet still warmer than it has been.

Yesterday I had the kettle on, chocolate hobnobs (the best!) were available, but no surprise drop in visit from Mr Mayo - harumph. Maybe when he comes back to do a book signing!?



#2 Yes, we are short of radio shows (DJ's have their hands tied to some extent by playlists) who can lead us in new directions; having said that - R1 I THINK plays new stuff, and certainly I hear something good and new EVERY time I listen to R6.

My son keeps nicking my Radiohead back catalogue to put on his ithingy, so yes, there is a cross-over in musical tastes in our house too.

Jamie Cullum also provides new people to listen to. BTW I'm very very excited to hear that Annie Nightingale is doing a special on R2 over Easter - old and new stuff all mixed up.

Only problem is that the sound of her voice on the radio makes me get into a 'Sunday homework sweat' as I used to listen to her Sunday afternoon show ('lazy Sunday afternoon') when ploughing thu it, regretting my frittering away the rest of the weekend on enjoying myself!



But I digress, as per usual.

Re musical preferences, Son (21) has been a massive fan of Queen since he was about 16, and he also likes Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Coldplay and the Beach Boys, amoung others. Daughter (19) has slightly more 'age appropriate' musical tastes, although I was quite surprised at Christmas when she said she loved the Michael Bublé Christmas album. When I was a teen I listened mostly to teen music that was current at the time - it was quite a lot later when my tastes started to get more eclectic. And it's only really since Simon has been presenting Drivetime that I've become more open to try music that I wouldn't expect to like - and often been pleasantly surprised!

Travelling around the world about 3 years ago (initially for a wedding in Melbourne, then Sydney & NZ) I was surprisingly ok, except for one occasion when we were walking post-lunch on a hill overlooking Auckland, when our friend who lived there reminded me that it was about 2am back in blighty - and my legs buckled under me! Weird.

BTW can't recommend the South Island of NZ highly enough, Marlborough Sound in particular - blissful views and my favourite wine is grown locally!

#57 Ah, but the good thing about that plane journey is, it's the most amount of time you will spend away from TV, PC, phone, etc - and I watched every film during the flights that I hadn't been to see in the last couple of years - YES MAN was a revelation, as I actually don't like Jim Carrey but I was sniggering at 3am (plane time) trying not to wake folks up!

BTW can you tick 'cities I have visited' if you only spend a few hours holed up in their airport facilities? thought not, worth a shot.

Oh Suzieeeee, just seeing the words 'Drambuie Shandies' makes me feel a bit wobbly. Casting mind back to Eastbourne pier bar in late 80s having aforementioned drink and now bemused as to how I thought a shot of drambuie in half a lager could be remotely tasty or sophiticated.

#50 - word I changed was 'moment' .... I thought it very bizarre but the old-fashioned word I'd used beginning with 'n' does have other conotations in certain dialects these days



#57+63 - the best way to do it (in my opinion) is break the journey into smaller, more bearable chunks. Obviously the absolute cost is more as you need accommodation etc on your stop-overs, but if you're making a trip of it "round-the-world" tickets are excellent value. Summer 2010 I did: London-Singapore-Perth-Alice Springs-Cairns-Sydney-LA-New York-London and have previously done: London-Hong Kong-Sydney-Auckland-San Fransisco-New York-London. The longest flight is then cross-pacific at 14 hours but bearable.

Of course the other option is to put the money you'd spend in stop-overs into the airfare and fly Business or First Class..... a whole new world of comfort and makes the time disappear (not least because you can actually sleep in relative comfort)

We're having a new shed built today and every time I go out there the 2 guys seem to be scratching their heads in puzzlement. It was half finished at three and then when I went out about twenty minutes ago they had taken it all down again!! I got them in to make it and put it up as I (and the Mister) didn't want the hassle.. I'm beginning to think it might have been easier to do it myself!



It's been a really gorgeous Spring day here. I really do think that a little bit of sunshine is good for the soul.

On the matter of music preferences, I've always had pretty broad tastes in music, mainly due to listening to stuff that my grandparents and mum liked, when I was younger. This led to an early appreciation for Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles amongst others, plus I can trace my passion for Country music back to my granddad's love for that genre.

#85 Billie - I'm not 100% sure that I did get a mensh, I'll have to listen again on iThingy. I was listening on my headphones, and I thought I heard Simon say my name after he'd stumbled over Rostronposkett (so to speak!) but it was obscured by Sally's chatter. Not complaining though, I've had more menshes this week than I've had for a long time!

Came home to the sound of T4F ( as we called them, back in the day), and heard my name being called. Or shouted out, as they say. Thank you Sir.



And well done Alex-G for a particularly clever and fine choice. And Zoe for the 3rd - some people are just never satisfied!! And also to Rostronposkett - is that a village in Cornwall? And anyone else I missed.



Billie - I only thought of the version of Tiptoe through the Tulips by Max Bygraves. And wild horses wouldn't make me suggest that. Standard to maintain, and all that.



Am trying to avoid getting sucked in to The Apprentice tonight. I found the last couple of series a bit repetitive and formulaic - needs an injection of something new. Maybe time to for Lord Sugar to move on, his acting skills are wearing a bit thin.



Talking of which, did anyone see The Hump on The One Show last night. he looked a bit bemused and lost, like he was trying to find his way back to the Care Home from the Post Office (Same demeanour as Terry W on CiN last year)



Oh dear, I'm now sounding spiteful, and didn't mean that at all. It's been a gloooooorious day here, with blossom everywhere.



Talking of which, does anyone know why magnolia, that blandest of bland paints - the property developer's favourite - is named after such a glorious and colourful tree?

#76 Harry – I love poetry too. You may remember that I gave you cause to revisit the Liverpool Beat Poets. I didn’t know the Edwin Morgan poem but thought it was beautiful.



I got Mr. to read it and he laughed! Apparently – that’s me – fallen asleep on the couch – he says something like “You can’t stay here all night. I’ve washed up. I’ve tidied up. Time to go to bed. “ And I reply with “I love you” …………….



One of my favourites – very sad - is “The Farmer’s Bride” by Charlotte Mew.

Laughed at Simon stumbling over Rostenspr, Rostensprosk, Rostensprosket (you know who you are). Well done for all the other menshes tonight too. I was cooking a birthday dinner and slurping on a glass of wine at the time so don't make me recall all the names.



Looking forward to new series of "4 Rooms" tonight and errmm, possibly "The Apprentice", although I agree, it's wearing a bit thin - like X Factor and needs a bit of a shake up.

I seem to have got the live music bug in a big way again. Just booked for The Staves in a Cambridge pub next month, and The Civil Wars at the Corn Exchange for November.

After a summer of 1976 style mensh drought I had Simon nearly say my name twice and then once properly and then one attempt by Sal! Fantastic. Feel a bit guilty though as I suggested U2 way after Zoe looking back through the messages. Anyway it makes up for not having 'I wish I was James Bond' by Scouting for Girls not selected for World Book Day (I can't let it go you know...).

Rostronposkett is sadly not nearly as romantic as a village in Cornwall RBJohn. Merely an amalgam of two unsung Watford FC footballers from youth! Is it really that hard to say?

Well done for all selections chosen tonight!
