!!!???!!!

Simon Mayo|09:40 UK time, Wednesday, 1 February 2012

Ok so you want a clue? (ref yesterdays TV show mention) There have been 3 other hosts before me, I'll be the 4th (obviously). That's all for now...

Cold and austere here around the estate-February is a rubbish month. Someone once said that February was designed for those who don't drink to know what a hangover feels like. Feels about right.

Showbiz day over (though chatting to Denzil Washington later still a bit luvvie) today I'm at a school watching an author sell his wares to grateful children. I'm hoping they give him an easy time! Then we are filming some noisy chemistry experiments for the R2 website. Remember the confession about the science teacher and the screaming jelly baby? Well we are getting him to repeat the experiment for us but we can't do it in the studio. Clipboard types will descend on us. So we go to some proper chemistry labs and record it for posterity. Melting, burning and flying sugar, propelled from a test tube! What could go wrong?

Thanks to Zoe (country gal) for that link to the Wall Street Journal piece about confessions when we first started this in 1990. I thought the guy was joking and would turn out to be Noel Edmonds filming for a gotcha oscar, but he was for real and the WSJ put it on their front page!

Today we welcome David Dimbleby to talk about the new series of Question Time on BBC1. He is one smooth operator, from a family of smooth operators. Time for DD to spill the beans about what the politicians are really like back stage I think.

And let's do QUESTION TIME oldies please. Audience/panel/host/questions wherever you fancy really.

Have a well insulated and comforting Wednesday, see you after 5. Flying jelly babies permitting.

Or maybe not... I do seem to recall Dr Kermode saying, after Ross's departure, that he either had no interest in doing it or didn't feel it was right for him... something like that, I'm sure. Apologies if I have this wrong.

Can't agree about Feb, shortest time until payday (although as a SAHM, I don't get a payday anymore but hubby does!).

Actually just came on here to say thank you very much for the recommendations of kids books before Christmas. The man (haven't a clue what his name is) suggested a trilogy The Mysterious Benedict society. I bought these (or rather Santa did) for my 10 year old daughter and she lurves them big time. It's always hard to know what they'll like and his description gave me the impression that she would, oh joy!

Jonathan Ross (good but 'let go' due some misdemeanor on the 'phone) and

Claudia Winkleperson (can't watch her, much as I like her because of the really annoying chap she presents with who hogs the whole show - not at all like R5's Kermode and Mayo...)

AND their shoes are on display - when interviewing guests, they sit face to face so there would be the opportunity for posh brogues to be on display...

DT Dude has got a suitably slightly world wearly face for the show (á la thinking woman's crumpet Barry Norman) - and is good at inteviewing the great, good and ugly of the film world.

Thanks, yes it was Mr e who was at hospital yesterday - he had an MRI scan on his back, which invoved lying down still for 45 minutes - which lead to a 'nap' of about 44 minutes, you can imagine.

My M-in-law asked me if I was going with him...like he was a 10 year old!

As he can drive, walk, talk, (and is a year older than me, but only for another 17 days...bechod) I thought he was safe to go alone...

#68 I bought them for my daughter (13) and she also loves them - I looked at the recommended books that were on the drivetime pages when the presenters all made their recommendations.

Also got Mr e 'The Art of Fielding' - after hearing the author on the prog - and he (Mr e, not the authir, natch) says it is very 'interesting' if a little large (hardback copy - and he uses a kindle usually)

I, for one, would be delighted if Simon were to be taking on the role as host for The Big Questions - BBC1's Sunday morning series which discusses moral, ethical and religious issues.

Nicky Campbell's performance has become rather stale of late and the programme could certainly do with ''refreshing'.

Also, there is a fair degree of studio gallivantery involved - hence the importance of shoes.

#83 Not a show I would watch I'm afraid, even if Simon took over from Mr Campbell (who's on the same list as Robert Peston in my house, although if Peston's on there's a danger I fall asleep before being able to hit the off-button). Sunday morning is when I have my feet up reading the Sunday paper of choice while listening to Bob's show from the night before. I get the feeling from his tweets that Mr M quite likes his Sunday morning "knackered music" recovery session so would be a tad surprised if he was going to do that show.

Film 2012 is another matter. I would definitely watch that.

Afternoon all - after getting a text vote on the Confession read out last night (tears of laughter running down my cheeks listening to it) I am on a roll. Bearing in mind the rumours swirling around - might I suggest:

BILLY TAYLOR & RICHARD LAMB - I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free.

The clue here is it's an instrumental.

#88 Fair comment Ken. I have benefited from a - should we say ... relaxed ... working week whilst recovering from my illness - so a Sunday morning isn't necessarily earmarked for leisure in my gaff.

I suppose it's unlikely to be The Review Show as it's produced from Glasgow nowadays ... ?

Good afternoon all from a sunny but cold Essex. Beautiful looking day out there.

My first thought when I read Lord Ammo's blog was "Countdown" (I'm obviously more lowbrow than most bloggers!) but then the shoes wouldn't matter and he would have to have time off from DT to record it and that would never do!!!

    Only thought for choon

There are more questions than answers - Johnny Nash(?)

probably been suggested before so can I share?

Just off to pick up Richard Allinson then off we go to the shop where ELH.

    See you soon

Rather late today, so most suggestions are just supporting those already mentioned

    Don't Give Up - Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush

How can I be Sure? - Dusty Springfield

Is there something I should know? Duran Duran

Knowing me Knowing you - Abba

Mr Know it All - Kelly Clarkson

    Out of Time - Blur

Questions and Answers - Sham 69

Somethings got me started (so I'll finish) Simply Red

The right thing - Simply Red

The winner takes it all - Abba

#3 Florence - Well, I think there have been 3 regular presenters of QT to date (Robin Day, Peter Sissons & David Dimbleby) But didn't they say that production was moving to Glasgow? Mind you, it's done on location surely, so I don't know.

#33 Ken - I don't often get the chance to watch Question Time these days (past my bedtime!) but I wouldn't want it to be scrapped. I think politicians should get MORE grilling from the general public (or unwashed as a Tory councillor branded them) I think as long as they keep inviting the characters (without vested interests) and the wild cards on, to mix things up with the politician's party line and rehearsed answers, then it's all good.

#60 Ken (again) - I can't say that The Mavericks have ever done anything for me either, but Raul Malo was just wonderful on last night's show :)

#64 Paul - I believe Lenny Law (Dirk Thrust) on Twitter, may already have either suggested, or vetoed 'Hands Up' by Ottowan. Didn't you get it played before though? And Simon did seem to think that it was a good suggestion, earlier :-S

#75 Harry - We still don't know that Simon's shoes etc were licence-fee funded, I mean, we are assuming that it's going to be a BBC show, but could be wrong.

#78 Suzieee - I may be wrong, if so, please forgive - but I interpreted the 'forward slash' reference in Billie's #160 post last night - as 'leaning to the right'. Perspicacious indeed.
