Bare With..

Simon Mayo|08:46 UK time, Friday, 24 February 2012

Words are being sent and said. Meetings called and minutes taken. The vastly irritating delays in posting comments will be top of the Blogging Affairs Investigation Unit when it meets. Number one job-read this blog and yesterday's comments! Hopefully SOMETHING CAN BE DONE! I will get someone from BAIU to post maybe...

Meantime, really enjoyed the show again last night. I've recorded a chat with Steve Wright which goes out on his show next Wednesday when I'm off on book duties (just one day! Back Thursday) and I told him I think I enjoy this show more than any other I've done. Nothing matches the power of a breakfast show or could match the intellectual satisfaction of the 5 Live show but this Drivetime thing is something else altogether. We have the best time doing it and (irritating small green error boxes notwithstanding) hopefully that comes over.

Double show day with Denzil Washington talking about his latest movie Safe House on 5 Live and then the delightful waters of the ARF. Lovely/surprising/slightly strange calls and great Friday night tunes with the nation, seemingly, looking forward to the contents of its fridge. Who wants to be the ARF King/Queen/executive chair for the week? Go ahead...tunes please!

Have a breezy and enlightened Friday, see you after 2&5.

*Hands Dougal a tissue* Poor you :(

Simon - the enjoyment does come over and I thoroughly enjoy listening each evening. Drivetime has become something I put on when I get home too , rather than just for the drive home. The show is what brought me to the blog .... and look how well that turned out ;))

ARFO - oh heavens I don't know .... may need to cogtitate on it ... back soon

  • Comment number 5.

    Good morning everyone.

It probably seems unfair for me to try for another ARF Crown after so recently being awarded my first but, hey, QEII has had hers for 60 years and no one seems to be telling her get out of the chair. So:

RACE WITH THE DEVIL by GIRLSCHOOL

    would do nicely.

  • Comment number 6.

    Morning all,

Bit bleary-eyed a birthday catch-up with a bessie mate last night, pizza, wine, pud, you get the drift...followed by watching the last instalments on ithingy of the orginal (and best) Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and THAT wet shirt moment..sigh....*shakes herself out of reverie*

I think it's great that he's still acting - and seems to be getting better & better (Kings Speech)- what happened to Jennifer Ehle though, no idea....could Wiki that one later.

So to the ARFO challenge, let's hear it for the old folks:

ELTON JOHN & CROCKODILE ROCK (65 in March!)

    OR

    FREE & WISHING WELL

We are having the reverse of the fatted lamb for the prodigal son tonight, a curry as a send-off for my son who is moving out - already having spent time at Uni, pre and post Uni gap-years, but now it's official...bedding is being discussed and DVD's that we thought were lost are re-appearing (without covers though Arggg).

Saturday night off to Brum to see my mum in a play (she's known amongst the family affectionately as 'Mad Granny' - as opposed to the other more cuddly normal kind)

    Sunday - relax...I hope.

    Enjoy your weekends everybody

And of course **HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO KATY-MAC**

    Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Simon, it always comes over on air, the fun you and your team have on Drivetime and Matt's laugh is so infectious once he gets going! The fun doesn't diminish when temps like part-time Pauline are on as they play along happily too! I hope you can persuade the powers-that-be to sort out the green box problem and get rid of the 3-minute delay too, please.

It would be good hearing any of these at 5:05

    Hi Simon and everyone.

An absolute massive YES that Drive time comes well. It is an excellent gathering of fun, frivolity, interllect and jolly japes and I LOVE IT!! Mirrors the banter that was had during R1 days! So huge pats on the back to all!

Thank you for taking the Blog powers that be to hand!

I was playing it on the keyboard last night and thought it would make a superb ARFO!

  • Comment number 18.

Morning Simon, team, NYM, and investigative bloggers,

I've already had a little chat with myself earlier on the old blog, so my name should already be ticked off on the register.

Simon - thank you for elevating the green box issue to the BAIU sub-commitee. Is there anything worse than having to fill in one of their forms to raise a "ticket" where the questions are never phrased properly to allow you to say what you need to say?

The patience of bloggers knows no bounds, so we will, of course, bear with. Although I must confess I'm a little more selective about who I "bare with" [sic], despite your polite request above. Especially on a public forum. You need to be careful what you say on a Friday, or that man from the layby will phone you again.....

    And so to the ARFO

Well, Chris played Johnny Be Good earlier today, so that's on ice until next week.

GIMME SOME LOVIN' - Spencer Davis Group

    SHE'S NOT THERE - Santana

REAL WILD CHILD or THE PASSENGER - Iggy Pop

    GOING UNDERGROUND - The Jam

That's all. Keep up the good work. (And we'll put in a good word at your 360 degree Annual Appraisal if you can eradicate the little green boxes)

    Good day all

    JBG

  • Comment number 19.

Good morning Simon, team and fabulous Friday poppets,

Simon, thank you for prodding the techs to look at our issues. You know how we love this place and it is maddening when we cannot access it every second of every day to show our devotion :D

As for the show, YES, your enjoyment, and that of the whole team, comes across wonderfully and is really what makes it so special and a great listen day after day. Keep up the good work!

If you are sneaking a peak ... Happy Birthday Katy! Hope you have a great day my lovely.

Dougal and Deebs, hope you're both feeling better soon. *edges away from the poorly sofa* ;)

Hoffs, sending hugs your way, know you're having a tough time of it lately. Keep your chin up my lovely.

Now to the all important ARFO.. I had a little look through the annals and couldn't believe there was no JBJ!

    So, please can we have:

YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME - BON JOVI

Thank you kindly and I'll bid you all a good day :D

    #14 Nice one, Chickster. Seconded.

Interview confirmed for 4pm on Wednesday so fingers crossed. A couple of people from my last contract are now at the potential client and have given lovely feedback on me so I am quietly hopeful. Mine to lose, as Mr P said.

Downside of going back to work? Would miss Drivetime and the 2 hours between 5pm and 7pm are really special for me. Great show Simon and Team! AND you have brought all of us lovely bloggers together and some real friendships have been formed. Who could ask for more?

Still no green box for me. I am using laptop and IE7. Could it be the browser type that causes the issue?

Friend coming over this evening and staying the night so must get the spare room cleaned. Will have to turf Kira out - she thinks it is her bedroom and sleeps in the bed. Poor Mr P tonight - surrunded by females. Must get that rescue boy-cat (older and street-wise) soon so that my man has male company and isn't out-numbered.

  • Comment number 24.

#20 - XP and IE7 here and I have had the green box a couple of times, though a refresh has restored things to normal; this may, however, be lucky timing on my part.

I suspect it's something with the scripting for adding the posts (though that's entering far too far into the technical for me to say with absolute certainty).

  • Comment number 25.

Good morning Simon, Team, NYM and blogpoppets one and all!

JBG I too was a tad concerned at the prospect of baring with... much as I love the show, the team and the blogpoppets I do feel that is just one step too far ;-)

Hope all poorly ones feel better soon.

No ARFO from me. Apart from the fact that I feel a tad hypocritical because it's not a show I always enjoy but I shall be travelling again tonight and I won't hear the show.

Re the techy problems. Thanks for trying Mr M but can't we just get Peta back?

And yes, I love listening as much as you and the team obviously love doing the show. You do a grand job of involving us listeners and making us feel a big part of it all too. Long may it continue!

#37 LOL Harry! Must admit, I get really fed up with PM's Questions - just hot air and gas that moves us no further forward as a society. Suggest we replace the Wednesday PMQ with a good old-fashioned brawl. Whoever wins (or is still standing), gets to make policy that week.

JBG - love the idea of a MacFirefox - visions of a flame grilled Renard with chilli sauce. Might not taste that good but perhaps Lord Ammo could use it as a threat with his persistent garden visitors. "Get off the trampoline or you will be burgered!". We have an Agave plant called "Spike" (sorry Spike) and if it stabs us, it is told it will be made into tequila. Seems to work - haven't been spiked for a while.

Hurrah! Roofing has arrived! Ziggy wants to bring in a mate to help him with it. I feel I am building a retinue of staff - very Downton Abbey!!!

Its also featured in our family's favourite guilty pleasure film: Sahara!

  • Comment number 42.

#39 Alex, I'm not so sure flame grilled fox would taste that bad. In Colombia, I was eating these delicous kebabs, bought from a street vendor, for almost a week before I found out what the meat was. I suspect fox would taste much the same; a bit like chicken :0)

#34 Hoffs... happy to share Chris Farlowe's song with you! :o)

I don't know if you have seen CF recently, but I saw him last year and even though he's 72-years old this year, he can still belt out all those old songs as good as ever! Here's Chris Farlowe with the equally 'still good at singing those oldies', Wayne Fontana!

Quick pop-in - have been cooking against the clock, reminiscent of Masterchef but I am not sure Messrs Torode and Wallace would have approved of my messy workstation (aka - the whole kitchen). Didn't start well when a whole piece of carrot cake (late breakfast - NOT eating between meals M'Lud) fell into my cup of coffee. Serves me right for attempting to cheat I suppose.

This morning's kitchen dancing music has been a dusty old CD - 30 legendary years at The Marquee. Some good memories brought back - especially Marillion - I thought I was so cool, borrowing the boy down the road's Marillion records (Big big crush -HUGE) when all my friends were swooning over Tony Hadley.

Anyway - before I go - lunch appointment

#6 - sounds like a great night - hope all goes well tomorrow

    Afternoon all

Have to agree with everyone else - the enjoyment the team has doing the show really transmits across the airwaves and within the data stream (delete according to listening medium!). My brother, who listens on his drive home, has commented on it as well and has noted how different it is when the leader is moonlighting on other duties.

How about somer Percy for the ARFO:

A rare visit south of the river for me tomorrow, as 1200 Stevenage fans head off to The Valley. Amazing how many tickets you can sell when a club does an "all seats for a fiver" match. They're expecting a 27000 sell-out.

    Katy, Happy Birthday to you!

Any ARF selection will work fo me. ;o)

The 'stop the quarry' meeting last night was enlightening and the main factor is how ground water will be affected, thereby putting our local water supply at risk. I was impressed by the detailed actions so far taken by our little, mighty parish council. Water is more important than sand was the mantra. The proposed quarry site is across from our home and many other's along the road where we live in Kent. It's frustrating, you pick up sticks, leave the city to live the country life and bureaucracy follows you wherever you go - ugh.

    Enjoy the weekend,

    Hello,

Matt here from the Blogging Affairs Investigation Unit, otherwise known as the Radio 2 Interactive team.

Really sorry for the problems a lot of you have been having with the green box of doom. We're looking into it as a matter of urgency. Thanks for persevering for the moment - and thanks in particular, Florence, for your screenshot.

#50 according to my research, he was not. Manfred Mann's earth band was a 70s collaboration and Paul Jones left the original band in the mid-60s

Gosh......I know that there are economies required at the BBC.....but to get Sport Matt AKA Dr Mosh to fix the blog as well!!!

#50........Autumn-Gale is spot on...........Paul Jones was a member when they were just Manfred Mann.........they later added the Earth Band moniker............I picked the song because it was written by a little known artist called Bruce Springsteen......apparently it was his first nymber 1 in the US as a songwriter........but I'm sure Simon could enlighten us more on the subject................................................................................................... ;0)

P.S When will I ever stop sneezing.......................Deebee...not much fun is it?

  • Comment number 57.

#56 Indeed it isn't, Dougal - my nose is starting to resemble that of a well known Christmas character and I'm on my second l*ms*p of the day (other cold remedies, etc...) On the plus side, I'm just about to sit down to listen to Wittertainment live, rather than having to wait for the podcast.

Lunchtime calls. Trying to keep away from all you infected peeps, as I haven't had a cold for over 12 months.

#53 Thanks for the update from Matt on the BAIU. Son of a gun, we'll have big fun. I suppose with the Corporation moving all their support services up north it's all hands on deck now. I bet the hold music isn't to everyone's taste on Dr Mösh's Help Desk.

  • Comment number 59.

Interesting that the BAIU (@53) had to await moderation.

Anyway, thanks Matt for looking into it although it doesn't seem to be a problem today.

  • Comment number 60.

#35 Never mind about answers on a postcard, how about answers on FB? The Drivetime FB page has posted that there's to be a Confessions podcast on a Friday. So there we are...

#53 Hi Matt - thanks so much for sorting this out for us.

Having just read that Matt (BAIU) is on the case of the green box, there it is again!!

Got rid of it by refreshing.

And just to show my ignorance, what is a screenshot?

  • Comment number 62.

#53 I don't like to be a spoilsport, Matt, but the green box is still alive and kicking!

Welcome to the blog and thanks for looking into the problem.

#61 Jennie, a screenshot is a picture of everything that appears on your screen, including any toolbars, desktop icons, tabs, clock etc - it's as if you've taken a photo of your computer screen. You'll see on the top right-hand corner of your keyboard there is a 'print screen' or 'prtsc' button (it may be different if you have a Mac). If you press that, then open a Word document and do a Ctrl V, you'll see what I mean. Hope this helps!

Getting realllllly tired of hearing the Gotye song on R2. Reallllllly liked it this time last week. Reallllllly hate it now.

And that bit at the beginning where he goes plink-plink on the xylophone sounds like a 4 year old playing Baa Baa Black Sheep Have You Any Wool.

#50 Lady_Stormrider, # Autumn_Gale & #56 Dougal - Sorry if my blog at #28 has caused any confusion by my understanding is that Paul Jones of Manfred Mann and more lately of the Manfreds, The Blues Band and Radio 2 Presenter is 70 today!

I would also concur that he left Manfred Mann in the late sixties to be replaced by Mike D'abo.

#68 BAIU, still not cleared to comment? I wonder what the moderator thinks the Matt is going to say? Perhaps he's prone to using a stream of expletives to describe blog problems? :0)

#66/67 It's been a long week, sorry if I'm repeating myself. It's been a long week, sorry if I'm repeating myself.

Listening to The R2 Playlist is the musical equivalent of waterboarding. Did anyone ever see that docu-movie about the explorer who got injured and lost on a mountain in South America? When he hit an all time low and spent the night in a feverish state of hallucination, his greatest torture was not being able to stop hearing Brown Girl in the Ring. That's how it feels here sometimes!

Right, nearly there. Driver, I'll be messing about on the river in your neck of the woods tomorrow, near Reading. I'll give you a wave and a whoop-whoop ho as I pass.

  • Comment number 73.

#70 You're welcome! I use that facility quite a lot at work, in training and to explain to the IT guys when I have a techie problem.

Thanks for trying to help, Matt... but that green box is still here!

  • Comment number 75.

#72 Come the revolution playlists will be banned.

If the Beeb's producers and presenters can't be trusted to produce the right show without such "guidance" then they haven't got the right producers and presenters!

  • Comment number 76.

I would like to add the following suggestions to get ARFO off at a pace:

Neil Young - Rocking In The Free World

Martin Simpson - Lakes Of Ponchatrain

Ian Hunter - Once Bitten twice Shy.

... and a seconding for those who suggested Blinded By The Light and Metal Guru.

  • Comment number 77.

I was just about to say I haven't seen the "green box" all day and, behold, it appears.

    But, it's gone now.

#75 Ken, I think I've said this before but I believe the "Playlist" is a way of the BBC maintaining some power within the music industry. If they can guarantee certain records a hearing, it gives them a certain amount of clout, don't you think?

  • Comment number 78.

The "green box" seems to be extracting some kind of revenge.

"Sorry, Comment posting is not available at the moment."

I'm not sure what annoys me most: the need to refresh until it disappears; or, the capital "C" after a comma. :-D

  • Comment number 79.

Hello Matt from BAIU! If it helps, I don't have a green box problem at all. Don't know why I am being singled out. At school, I was the last one picked when sports team "captains" were picking their teams (I couldn't catch a ball. Turned out years later that I couldn't see the ball, but there we go). I have the same feeling of rejection now. Why doesn't the green box want me?

Actually, not that bothered. Smug, more like.

Back in a bit for some bird guidance....... (be quiet Harry - not that sort)

  • Comment number 80.

#77 Wasn't there an element of preventing individuals being "induced" to favour a particular record about it all? And now instead a panel of worthy individuals gets to decide that a record is worthy of being favoured :-)

  • Comment number 81.

    Afternoon All;

Still feeling in a melancholy mood (thanks JBG for the virtual hug), so I'll be brief...

Glad to see that the techies are on the case r.e the green box of doom. I haven't been green boxed today, but then, this is my first attempt at blogging today.

Suzie - I sent you a tweet r.e Jennifer Ehle, but she is still going strong, and can be found on Twitter @jenniferehle She has just been cast in Kathryn Bigelow's upcoming film about Osama Bin Laden.

I'm still recommending Alabama Shakes to anyone who will listen https://www.alabamashakes.com/ The lead singer has a lovely soul voice, maybe one for Posh Soul Lady :-/

    I requested...

    SONG 2 - BLUR

For my ARFO suggestion. I thought their BRIT set was awful, despite me always being a Blur, not Oasis gal! Someone described them as looking/sounding like drunken louts who had invaded the stage, and sadly I cannot disagree. Still a rousing song though...

Hope ill bloggers get well soon, and those feeling a bit down (like me) are soon returned to a sunny disposition.

Have a good weekend one and all xxxx

    P.S...

Almost forgot to say, that yes, the enthusiasm that Simon and the team have for the show, does translate on the air. I don't go out of my way for many things these days, but weekdays 5 - 7pm I am glued to the radio. Keep up the good work!

  • Comment number 82.

It has turned into a lovely afternoon here in Kent and I decided that a wander around the garden was in order. I stopped to chat to the resident robin, then wended my way to the post & rail fence separating the garden from the paddock, startling a rather fat pheasant en route.

In the paddock were 2 birds, the like of which I have not seen before. Help please!

In colouring, the birds resembled a thrush - a mousey brown back with a creamier breast. In size, sort of pigeon sized (phew, typed penguin first - glad I spotted the error). They were walking up and down the paddock, grazing on whatever they were finding. I grabbed camera but they flew off. The initial flight seemed quite awkward, as if maintaining height was going to be an issue. As they flew off, they made a sort of "trrr-trrr" noise.

I have never seen a quail - but for some reason, I think that is what they could be. Any ideas? Sal, you around?

  • Comment number 83.

    # 82

    Could they be partridge........

    Sorry for jumping in.

  • Comment number 84.

#82 Alex, you can hear what they sound like on this site too:

    https://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/q/quail/index.aspx

  • Comment number 85.

Just wiki-what sit'd quail. Not what I saw in the paddock.

  • Comment number 86.

#82 Alex, did they make a kind of chuckling sound? As Judith says, they could be partridge.

  • Comment number 87.

#82 Alex, have a look at the RSPB website. As well as having a picture of the bird there is also a button to press to hear the bird's song.

    www.rspb.org.uk

From your description, might it be a fieldfare?

  • Comment number 88.

Alex, were they in a pear tree? ;0

  • Comment number 89.

I was wiki'ing the wrong kind of quail. Thanks for the link, Harry - does look and sound like what I saw. Thank you!

A veritable game pie in our paddock today. Two bunny rabbits earlier.

  • Comment number 90.

Definitely not a fieldfare - wrong colouring. Pretty sure quail is the answer but I have just lrearned from the RSPB that quail don't normally come to the UK until April/May. My bird book is still in a box in the garage - might have to go and find it.

Really disappointed that I can't make the upcoming Bap Kennedy gig in London.
