Hullo/Hello!

Simon Mayo|09:21 UK time, Monday, 21 November 2011

A dreary Monday it may be but job well done for all those bloggers who tirelessly answered the phones and took pledges all day long. There is a type of knackered which comes from doing good things- a righteous knackeredness if you like-and that's what you should be feeling. And a pretty good total I think you'll all agree.

Aside from that, I should tell you that being on Radio 4's "Infinite Monkey Cage" (which had been scaring me all day) was great fun, even if I was by some margin, the stupidest person on the stage. The highlight was afterwards when child 3 was discussing quantum physics with Professor Brian Cox for a good 10 minutes. The producer was not the only one thinking she had the wrong Mayo on the panel.

Yesterday I went to sample the delights of Mark Knopfler and Bob Dylan who were playing at the Hammersmith Apollo. This clearly was a show waiting to happen since Mark produced Bob's "Slow Train Coming" in 1979. Well I can report that Mark was brilliant and his band (with John McCusker and Mike McGoldrick) first rate. I can also report that in my view Bob was terrible. I am out of step with the rest of the audience who whooped and clapped but it seemed to me they were applauding the memory of great songs, not the versions they had just heard. Sure it's great to be there when Bob does Tangled Up In Blue, Desolation Row And Like a Rolling Stone but he didn't actually sing any of them, he growled them. When the crowd joined in the 'How does it feeeeeeel', it was the first thing with a tune for a while. Since Mark Knopfler in fact. After a while I had had enough.

So today we welcome Russell Watson to Drivetime who has this year returned to the stage after his battles with cancer. He thinks his voice is even better than it was and you can judge for yourselves tonight after 6.

And today, in case you didn't know, is International Hello Day where we are invited to say hello to ten people at least. So we'll do songs that say HELLO in anyway, or contain a GREETING or SALUTATION of some sort. And then you've done your duty.

Have an organised and thorough Monday, see you after 5

Morning Simon, team, NYM and dutiful and righteous bloggers,

    HELLO, I LOVE YOU.

That's the song by THE DOORS, of course. Not you personally.

Morning all! Grey again, though I'm beginning to resign myself to the fact that it is nearly December and therefore I shouldn't be surprised. Nice start to the week - air con in the car stopped working yesterday, immediately preceded by a loud pop from within the engine compartment. Just the kind of bill I need this close to Christmas...

    Greetings...

THE BEATLES - Good Morning, Good Morning

THE BEATLES - Good Day Sunshine

THE DOORS - Hello, I Love You

Will have a wee think. There must be hundreds of songs, but trying to whittle it down to some good ones!

    Hi again Simon and bloggers

I agree with you, Simon, about Bob Dylan... both times I have seen him he barely sang a note in tune and I don't think he'd get to boot camp in X Factor!

HELLO I LOVE YOU ~ The Doors

    DEAR JESSIE ~ Madonna

I'm not a great fan of Mr Dylan but Mrs Snapper thinks he can do no wrong. So for her I'll ask for:

  • Comment number 36.

Morning to all, hoping everyone had a great weekend.

Wisdom of the day, never fully believe all the product desciptions on Ebay, I had ordered and just received a telephone headset, (I do alot of calls from home) and the damn thingy does not fit. Having made sure the description matched the phones spec I placed the order. I even checked online to see if my rather old BT phone matched the headset.

Oh well another return, I would rather buy it in a shop anyway. Something satifying wandering around Maplins in a daze, trouble is I always come home with some other little gizmo's I don't really need.

    Songs for today

MR BLUE SKY - ELO - (MORNING TODAYS FORECAST ......)

    SAY HELLO - SOFT CELL

    HELLO DOLLY - LOUIS ARMSTRONG

    THANKS

One of the above is by The Blogs Favourite Act

Shall I get on with it?

  • Comment number 40.

Oh well done me coming up with something original. (first time for everything)

My opinion of Bob Dylan is that while he is clearly quite the genius when writing songs, unfortunatly thats where it ends cos he couldent hold a tune in a bucket!

Feel free to disagree of course.

My first day back at work this morning and it was so nice to see everyone, especially when they said theyed missed me. Just doing mornings this week in conjunction with my deputy who amusingly this morning tried to tell me how to do my job. Bless. Typically the whole family started with a stinking cold this weekend so that was a 'fun' thing to contend with on the first day back.

Off to join the 'sickly' cherub n hubbs who are snuggled up on the couch watching cartoons :-)

HI HOW YA DOIN' .... by KENNY G

  • Comment number 44.

    Good morning and hello!

A bit difficult to say hello to 10 people today. I am working from home and here in the rural idyll, there is no one to say hello to. I have greeted Mr P and the 4 cats, so that is 5, then I said hello to a robin and 2 blue tits and that is my lot for face to face hello-ing.

Well done again to the CiN-ers - so glad you had such a good day and evening. Was thinking about you all day. Hopefully be with you next year.

PSL, heard your mensh by Tony B and did a whoop whoop!

Very foggy and chilly here today. Complete contrast to yesterday when we were drinking prosecco on the patio in glorious sunshine.

    Will pop back later today

    Hello all,

    HELLO BY LIONAL RICHIE

  • Comment number 47.

    Morning all

I like Siouxsie's "Dear Prudence" so will second the call for that one.

Will Deebee be giving a Wembley Strictly review? I noticed a floor person on camera instructing the crowd to applaud at one point - oops! Have to say as a viewer I think the Blackpool Tower ballroom option works much better than Wembley Arena.

RG's routine was just ridiculous. The only time there should be canon's in there are when AC/DC are playing :-) Faith in British public restored.

Morrissey Mullen - I had the pleasure of seeing them in St Albans on a reunion tour many years ago. Had seen Dick Morrissey and Jim Mullen seperately in a trio with Mike Carr previously, and also Dick Morrissey with his own quartet in my local which used to host the Herts Jazz club. Morrissey's Soliloquy album is one of my favourites - a great sax player, sadly missed.

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Simon, thanks for your kind words. It was a pleasure to help out on the phones, everyone involved got a real buzz out of the day, and I hope we get invited back to do it all again next year. And thank you so much for taking the time to come and see us. I think you just about made it to the studio in time for your show!

No mensh chasing for me today. I'll miss the show as I'm going to see Simon's colleague and pal Mark Kermode. Will have to 'listen at a time more convenient' though, as I love Russell Watson. He performed at Proms in the Park this year - at one point he turned to the audience and said "This is why I lived". Awww...

#47 Mo and I had a fantastic time at Strictly. The only 'live' bit is the Saturday night show - and even then the opening dance was pre-recorded before they started on air. There was a great atmosphere at Wembley, although I have to say having been last year to Shepherd's Bush that the former was better - more 'intimate' as it was smaller. And we didn't really need to be told to clap - I would say 90% of the time it was spontaneous!

    Morning all,

Lovely to hear your news of exciting trips up the Big Smoke, raising money for charity, dinners out, shared girls bedroom (was there enough energy for a midnight feast?) and lastly, but not leastly Strictly Live at Wembley! Must have been a memorable few days, special times.

RE live bands - Bob 'the mumbler' Dylan was on TV the other day & Mr e (professional muso) declared his band 'amazing' and that they were carrying the great man.

I also though the band of SCD got a bit lost in the vastness of the auditorium of Wembley- not quite as hot and tight as they usually are in studio - presumably those that were there think differently?

RE Theme, nothing new to add - my fave is David Bowie of course 'Everybody says hi'

I was a bit run-down over the weekend so played it safe not doing much EXCEPT I must say that Lord Ammo is so lucky that child #3 is a boy - as my child #3 (gal) just turned 13 and I had to go to see, for her b'day, the new teen movie:

'Twiglet - The Breaking Yawn' which was a rite of passage...sitting next to an embarrassed, squirming teen while watching simulated sex, baby birth, wolf-men and vampires (in fact the vampire scenes were a welcome relief to her I suspect)

Have a nice Monday y'all, back to earth with a bump for many blogger I suspect!

I'm off to look up the Beth Hart song Harry has recommended...

#70 PoS, first APOLOGIES for questioning your ability to count when the problem was my inability to spell. Second, THANKS for taking the trouble to do all the work for the BFA, it's been fun.

  • Comment number 73.

    Amy Winehouse, ONE POINT??!?

Harry, the spelling should have been picked up by me, so not really your fault. There were others that I spotted, such as ELO as compared with E L O, but that one slipped by. Sorry, an' all that!

I'm off to mop my brow. Katy might have a bit more info on the lists, or she may not. Catch y'all later.

WELL DONE POS !! (and Katy Mac)

A wonderful achievement even if Harry does want a recount!

PoS - #70 Well done on collating all that, quite a surprising top 5, not sure how many would have thought all those would be up there, but the bloggers have spoken!

POS - Well done and thank you for compiling that list - and Katy too for her help. You've obviously worked extremely hard.

What a revealing list too - there seem to be some notable omissions from our list but a worthy top 5. I'll have to look at it a bit more closely! I've really enjoyed this - thanks Paul.

#20 - Wow Harry! What lovely late-night, 'sitting by the fire' music (thought about it this weekend - having a fire that is)

They don't tho' seem to be touring the 'LP' together, and are mainly in the US (Joe) and in Viking_Mo coutry (Beth)

    Still pondering hello/goodbye tunes..does

'CALLING OCCUPANTS OF INTERPLANETARY CRAFT' (Carpenters)

    count as a greeting?

A late good morning to you Simon, team and poppets all,

Been an eventful weekend here but I'm not getting into all that now.

I know it's very late for choon suggestions but was surprised not to read any of the following above ...

    HELLO HAPPINESS - THE DRIFTERS

HELLO OLD FRIEND - ERIC CLAPTON

HELLO IT'S ME - TODD RUNDGREN

    HELLO EARTH - KATE BUSH

Suspect they will get lost amongst the wonderful chart run down!

Very well done to PoS for compiling the list, it makes surprising reading. Due to events on Friday I didnt get a chance to post my final five and I know you didn't either Paul, I wonder how many others missed the cut off and how it would've changed things.. we shall never know! Was great fun, thanks again PoS and also Katy.

Got to run for now, have a good day all.

    Jillyx

p.s. #20 it's an amazing track isn't it, great listening.

#80 Suzieeeee, isn't it just? I'd heard them doing their solo stuff before (and Beth singing with Slash) but together, they're just perfect. I can't stop playing it.

Morning all I have had a lovely hello yesterday - finally got to meet & cuddle Oor Willie, my nephew - at last! He's only 5 weeks old and all new and milky smelly.

I actually prefer the DAVID GRAY - SAY HELLO WAVE GOODBYE version. As well as 'Mr Blue Sky' (I wish I had some of that here in foggy Horsforth) I remember Dave Lee Travis introducing them as 'Eeee ello' in a Lanky accent. Well you had to be there I think.

#78 exactly what Mr e said this weekend - we all know that Sunday is not live - and that Tess just changes her clothes, Claudia Winkleperson comes on - and Bruce gets driven home pronto for his horlicks!

So The Beatles are the Bloggers' favourite - who'd a thunk it. Well done them! What do they win - one of Harry's books? Or a jar of Alison from Eastleigh's home made jam, perhaps? Thanks to Paul and KatyMatey for compiling the lists.

#78 #86 Sir Bruce does indeed go home after the live Saturday show. I really don't know why they keep up the pretence that Sunday's show is live - everyone knows it's recorded on the Saturday.

Note to self - must remember to revert to my usual blog name tomorrow...

    Hello All

What a fascinating list of favourite acts, I am still trying to digest the contents and see if I can determine anything about my fellow bloggers from the results.

Many thanks for compiling the list and all those who took the time and trouble to contribute.

Although only making a creditable No.124 I am pleased to see ELP in the list and in celebration of this can I suggest for one of todays 'greeting' tunes

    Hello Mayo bloggers,

Lovely to see some of you last Friday. I know exactly what Simon means.......I was exhausted for the whole weekend after our 9 hour stint last Friday but it was a satisfied, meaningful exhaustion.

My suggestion for the music theme: The Greeting Song by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers

    Peace & love bloggers

#94 Hi Cathmel - nice to 'see' you over here!

Are we doing bad lyrics this week? Shall I kick off? My first suggestion would be from 'Little does she know' by the Kursaal Flyers. Two of the verses in particular:

"She was sharing her spindryer with a guy in a tie-dye

When she saw my reflection in the chrome

I knew that she'd seen me, cos she dropped her bikini

The one that I got her in Rome..."

    and

"When she'd finished her laundry she was all in a quandary

And made it for the street like a hare

Her escape was so urgent, she forgot her detergent

And dropped all her clean underwear..."

    Need I say more... ;o)
