Dun Dunna Dah, Dun Dunnah Dah

Simon Mayo|09:09 UK time, Tuesday, 22 November 2011

Good morning from misty north London where the coffee is fresh and heating is on. Chris is on the radio and sounding top as usual - I realise I have a new theory. When the news is relentlessly bad, there comes a point where you think 'I've listened. I've tried to understand. Now I want to hear some Kate Bush (or Beatles/Pink Floyd/ELO/S&G?Squeeze maybe). The worse it gets, the better the tunes have to be. Standards must be kept. On with the hits.

Enjoyed the Russell Watson chat yesterday. There was a point in the second half of the interview where he was talking about his operation and the 'choice' he felt he made, where there was a sheen to his eyes I hadn't noticed before. He certainly seems to feel blessed to have survived and has a better attitude to life. As I have written before, I always wonder whether it's possible to achieve that positive, enjoy-each-day attitude, without going through a near-death trauma. Something to aim for...

Today we welcome Jeff Wayne to talk War of the Worlds. As you bloggers l know, I did a press launch with him last Friday when they announced Liam Neeson in the Richard Burton role for a new tour next year. I shall enjoy having him on as I remember listening to him launch it the first time when I was a student in my first year at Warwick University listening to Round Midnight with Brian Matthew. I thought then that it sounded a great idea and it still has some great songs on it (though I always skip The Red Weed). Jeff Wayne at 6.

And so we should do songs about MARS, MARTIANS and anything you can link to the RED PLANET. That'll do nicely.

Have a successful and profitable Tuesday, see you after 5

Doh! I post for the first time in ageeeeeees and a new blog appears, so in case you missed it .....

    Morning peoples!

Can I just say a massive THANK YOU to the lovely Mayo Blogpoppets for volunteering your time last Friday. It was really fantastic to meet some of you for the first time, and to see some of you again for the 2nd year of phone duty at CiN.

It was a frantic day all round, but it wouldn't have been possible without your contribution.

My highlights, in no particular order .....

    1. Mo's face when I informed her I'd put her forward for a live on-air interview (sorry Mo!)

    2. Sir Cliff Richard agreeing to have his photo taken with Marlon the monkey (yes, really!)

    3. Feeling the buzz from all of you lovely volunteers

    4. The touer of the studios on the 6th floor - thanks Phil x

    5. The Sweet Child Of Mine phone room finale when the lines closed jsut before 7pm

    and finally ......

    6. The absolute 110% relief that on my part, everything went as planned. Phew indeed!

I was absolutely shattered all weekend, and after a day at a business networking event yesterday, my head is still everso slightly spinny! Now that I'm working from home (for myself - yay!!) I will endeavour to blog more, as time permits.

Thanks again everyone - Bloggers United!

Morning fellow bloggers! Thankfully we appear to have escaped the threatened fog here, but only just - it's like living with a cloud a hunred feet above you. Very grey and bits of it are trying to nestle between the trees.

Car in to have the air conditioning seen to. I shall remain seated until I've heard the damage...

Nice to get a mensh yesterday (along with Paul). I consider myself very fortunate as every time I've had a mensh it's been the first theme record, so I've heard them on the way home from work!

#1 Thank you Deev's and as others have said - it was a great day.

The Driver asked on the last blog about volunteering for next year. I wouldn't like to speak on Deev's behalf about next year as I don't know whether she will want to do it.

However for this year, everyone who did it in 2010 was offered the chance to volunteer again first and then it was open for anyone else to put their name forward. These were then picked at random, which is how I got in. This was also the first year the bloggers manned a whole shift so things may well change for next year!

    Cheers

  • Comment number 52.

#50 Driver, listening to it now (and don't think I don't know I should get myself a life!); you're correct, there is "a smidgeon of an extra note" in the middle bit.

  • Comment number 53.

I'd say it's closer to a semi-smidgeon (!). But that would really be splitting hairs.

  • Comment number 54.

    #53 JBG, what-the-hell, let's split some hairs; I'm going for a demi-semi-smidgeon (with maybe a dot)!.

One poorly blogger reporting in! Too much excitement at the weekend methinks.

#1 Deevs, my lovely, never apologise. Once i'd got over the shock and surprise I rather thrived on it. And Sally T made it so easy for me. A gawjus blogpoppet saw that I couldn't listen again away from the uk and has emailed the clip to me. THANK YOU, you know who you are! And I can't thank Deevs enough for the huge amount of work she put into making Friday work. Here's to next year, whoever is lucky enough to man the phones. #52 Harry, I listened to this album so many times as a kid that I think it's imprinted in my DNA! Nice to know the grey cells aren't letting me down.

I often used to listen through headphones, not least because my little brother would get terrified whenever it got to the bit with the cylinder unscrewing. Of course, knowing this meant that if my Mum wasn't around, I'd pull the headphone jack out at precisely the right moment to send him running screaming from the room!

Oh, and if it's any consolation, I went a far s checking my ipod to see if I had the album on there to check my theory....

#56 Driver, I played it a lot, too.

Large And Warm 'ello's Ter The Mayo & ALL Blog Dudes...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

Soz a couldn't blog yesterdee.... Crayzee busy at work from 7am ter 11pm... Couldn't get near a PC – Notta good idea ter blog whilst driving up the M62!!!!!!

Mr Mayo Pal - A agree the news is so depressing, often a can't listen!!!!!

    Don't wanter listen!!!!!

Why do we make such a mess of this beautiful paradise, called the world, that's been given to us???????

The thing that gets me is TOP DJ's, soz broadcasters, such as yersen spend a whole 'our en'ancing our lives.... Presenting a radio prograame full of fun, good music & interesting content.... Then every 'our bang on the 'our, without fail 24 'ours a DAMN IT a day.... It's all done away with by THE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A won't go inter details.... But there's everything from war ter the death of children.... And the nasty thing: None of the news is fiction!!!!!!!!!!

Time ter move onter something good in this very messed up world:

So am coming to you with an little account of me most nice visit ter BBC Radio 2 on Fridee ter do a small part in 'elping the mighty Children In Need appeal raise much needed money ter 'elp kids who need a 'elping 'and!!!!!!

Just of late ave been feeling very tired what with doing me 'ouse up, working long 'ours and me recent back injury adding insult ter injury, but this wasn't gonna stop me coming ter 'elp out with CIN!!!!!!

But 'ence why a thought best not ter join fellow bloggers for breakfast and get as much sleep/ rest as possible, THUS arriving direct at R2 as close ter the bone as the instructed 09.30.

True ter the punctual machine that is mesen a arrived at 09.27... But sadly missed the gang already gone up inter R2 aych Q and thus spent 30 minutes waiting at reception thus missing the reception that CLP gave the blog dudes!!!!!!!!

Oh well never mind, maybe next year i'll getta chance ter see CLP again... But soon a was upstairs and getting ready ter start manning one of the phone lines!!!!!

Soon a was in and wired and ready ter answer the calls of the generous callers calling!!!!!!!!!

This year a decided ter keep a count of the calls a took just out of curiosity and as a good incentive ter keep working 'ard taking calls!!!!!!

A admire those who work in call centres for a living as it's not east trying ter get info off a caller in a noisy call centre and ter bang it all in a PC all as fast and efficiently as possible!!!!!!

But we all kept plugging on.... The counting, in blocks of 5, a found great as even when a felt a need a quick break i'd just get another block ticked off... A good incentive!!!!!

A took 65 calls during the day which must add upter about 2k raised towards CIN!!!!!!!!

And great ter see a few celebs pop in and 'ave me photer taken with a few of them – a nice souvenir of the day ter remember the day by!!!!!!!

Very nice ter be able ter pop up in between calls, say a quick 'ello ter yersen Mr Mayo, then dive back inte rme phoneline 'otseat!!!!!!

The only thing it was frustriating not ter be able ter meet all the celebs popping in... A saw Sir Cliff, Twiggy, The Bruce.... Jezza Vine.... All come in butta wasn't able ter say 'ello or getta 'graph ter any of these!!!!!

A mean a couldn't exactly jump up mid call and say ter the kind caller “soz can't take yer money a NEED ter say 'ello ter The Bruce!!!!!!”

At the edn of the day the reason a was there was ter man a phoneline for CIN!!!!!!

Although a think if Wrightie, aka god of broadcasting came in, a think a could lose me mind and 'ave ter jump up and getta photer!!!!!! Only joking!!!!

    Actutlaly maybe am not????

Although maybe this is why 'e takes CIN week off... The mobbing is too much!!!!!!!

A must admit though a find 65 not as good a total as a 'oped a might do... Maybe 200 'undred would ave been a better number!!!!!! Butta did work 'ard so maybe 200 not possible in 9 'ours???!!!

    A don't know all.... A don't know!!!!!!

Me only complaint is the volume on the phone lines was poor making for some time consuming calls. If the volume on the 'eadphones where better then a could whizz through the calls faster!!!!!

It was great ter getta clear call then a could do the business in 'alf the time!!!!!

But all in all a fab-dabby-dozy of a dee & great ter 'elp out for the good cause!!!!!

Nice ter see so many bloggers again, even if as always a struggle ter know who's who as there's so many bloggers from both blogs!!!!!!

And of course BIG thanks ter Cheryl for organising us all!!!!!!!

And it was nice ter go for a much needed refuelling aka the bloggers meal afterwards ;-))))

  • Comment number 59.

A was watching CIN on tv later, when a got 'ome and some of the sad stories makes you realise just 'ow much the money is needed and what good this part of the BBC does for our country!!!!!

One very sad story was about Clare House Hospice that 'elps terminally ill children through the last few months or weeks of their lives when they are so gravely ill!!!!!!!!

They try to give these very difficult cases the best end to their lives and make it easier for their families!!!!!

Not that 'easier' is a word that exists for the terrible pain that families and these children must go through!!!!!!

One thing that shocked me & made me feel VERY, VERY angry is the story of 'ow the Clare House Hospice, that was shown in a film during the CIN TV programme, is that only 8 of the 10 rooms at the centre are presently able to be used as they can not afford to run the other 2 rooms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The rooms cost £270 a day to run!!!!!

    THIS IS SHOCKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A country where the government can afford to throw billions around in the city, where these billions vanish, where the government can recently sell Northern Rock at a £400 million pound loss.... Yet they can't find the extra £270 a day to look after very, very ill and suffering children who are terminally ill!!!!!!!!!!!!

David Cameron and the idiots in power before 'im should be ashamed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to end on a negative note but I feel so ashamed and angry at the greed that we live amongst in this country, caused by a greedy few in the city & government.... They 'ave all their priorities completely wrong!!!!!!!!

It's great for one night Children In Need does so muc good in such a 'igh profile way!!!!!!

Brings, not just the bloggers together, but the whole country for one day ;-))))

Put a late mark next to my name in the register again, I used to get a lot of those during my school days! I've just enjoyed a mammoth lie-in, because the twins were at respite last night. Also I was topping up my sleep quota for the rest of the week, because with it being a school inset day on Friday, it's gonna be a looooong weekend.

Looking forward to Jeff Wayne, and a bit of War of the Worlds on tonights show, I love a bit of Sci-Fi :)

    Oldies... It's got to be...

LIFE ON MARS - DAVID BOWIE (A contender for my favourite ever song)

ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS - DAVID BOWIE

#59 Well done for your hard work for CiN, Bingo :) I share your anger over the lack of government funding for these vital services, I said as much on here the other day. I am glad that such services are available due to the generosity of people donating to charities like CiN. But I am also bitterly angry that the government wastes so much money, and can't afford to give children (and adults) a bit of dignity and comfort in their final days on this Earth. Also the many disabled children and adults struggling to live their everyday lives, and unable to afford essential equipment and home adaptations etc, not to forget the army of unpaid carers we have in the UK, again both children and adults, who work practically 24/7 with very little, and sometimes with no support. Things are getting worse under this coalition government, as not only are these people being starved of benefits and services, the disabled are actively being labelled as scroungers, and non-contributors to society. I'm so very angry and upset about it all.

That's enough ranting from me, I'll take a leaf out of Simon's book I think, and put some good music on.

I go off to do a bit of housework and the posts go into Orbit ..... see what I dud there!?!?

I'm suspecting that volunteers for CiN 2012 will see us vastly over-subscribed, so yes, it will be names in a hat I'm afraid. I'll be contacting The Lovely Man At R2 around May next year but he's already said he's happy for me to organise the phone cover for the 2012 campaign.

I'm happy to take names of volunteeers (via email or FB - not on here as it moves too quickly and I might miss someone!) BUT ..... please bear in mind it's a long day and if you live a fair way from London, staying over the night before would be the easiest option - so things like commitments/children/travel/finances have to be taken into account when volunteering.

Right, best get back to the cleaning .... ugh!!! (but worth it when it's done!)

Morning all - still misty and murky in Cleckhuddersfax. I think the Sopwith Camel's come down in a hayrick somewhere as I cannot hear anything from Leeds-Bradford. If Lord A was going to play LIFE ON MARS, could I make a little request & ask that we squeeze out the last with the ole piano playing at the end? I love that bit most.

Just a quick 'hear hear' to the above sentiments. I'd like to bang a tub for the whole Hospice movement in this country, as well as their army of volunteers working all year round.

  • Comment number 80.

#75 LOL, I welcome the company PSL :)

I actually have a Simon Mayo related confession, as to the reason why my mum was called to my secondary school, to account for my persistent tardiness...

When I was a small child (up to the age of twelve) my mum and I lived with my maternal grandparents. It was my granddad's job to get me up and out of bed in time for school, which he did with great diligence (and perseverance, as I have always been a reluctant riser!)

However, at the age of twelve, when my mum and I moved in with my soon-to-be-step-dad. I was given a beeping alarm clock, in place of my reliable granddad, as both my mum and step-dad were up and out of the house before 6am for work. It proved to be sadly inadequate, as the beep wasn't very loud and would stop before I was fully awake, thus allowing me to drop off to sleep again. After a letter home from school, and concerns expressed by my form tutor at parents evening, my mum and step-dad decided that drastic action was needed...So they bought me a new-fangled radio alarm clock! My mum told me to tune it in to a good music radio station, and turn the volume up loud. She was convinced that would do the trick, and wake me up at 7am so I could get to school on time.

There was however, a fatal flaw to this plan...The radio station I tuned in to was Radio One, and the breakfast DJ at the time, one Simon Mayo. The alarm did wake me up, and I would have got to school on time, had I not been so engrossed in the show that I didn't want to leave the house until the very last minute (no iPlayer in them days you see) So the late marks continued, and my mum was promptly called in to school for an urgent meeting to discuss my chronic tardiness.

I never confessed to the real reason for my tardiness, blaming it instead on poor hearing (for which I got an ear syringing for my trouble!) and bad sleep. I did manage to improve my record for arriving on time, but this was due mainly to a radio/cassette Walkman I got for Christmas, rather than any real effort on my part.

Oops sorry for rattling on :-[

Please forgive if I am repeating myself, but I once read in a pop mag (Record Mirror or Melody Maker) around the time that Jeff Wayne was having success with WOTW that, in the 60's, he had been one of the Ron-Dells who recorded Martian Hop.

Years later, on Iain Lee's LBC phone-in-show, I actually got to ask Mr Wayne himself if this story was true. He told me that he knew some members of the band but was not on the record. He seemed embarrassed, perhaps because this 60's Martian connection detracted from his promotion of WOTW.

I would love to hear Martian Hop by the Ron Dells (or possibly Ran Dells) as it's a fun tune. But not if it makes a Drivetime guest uncomfy.
