Great weekend...I am now a 2nd Dan kickboxing black belt ( 2 stripes on said black belt now.) I had a bit of good fortune in the sense that the examiner forgot to test me on my 3 knife defences....which is just as well really because on the night before they were awful!!! 9 of us from our club took black belt grades from the 1st grade to 1st Dan and me 2nd Dan...got a stiff neck now though after being thrown a little too hard on one of the takedowns!

Did anyone see "The Most Incredible Thing" on BBC4 on Friday evening? I'm not a great fan of ballet but this was fantastic. A re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale set to music by the Pet Shop Boys. Worth catching on the ithingy in my opinion :-)

Squirrel update:

Apparently the back of our AV unit was all comfy and cozy, he (she?) was planning to stay for a while, especially as folks kept chucking biscuits in his direction..even though ladders, poles (and even a giant cheeseplant) were up agin' the open windows to ease his escape - should he so wish.

3 hours later, no sign of leaving for the parks under his own steam, so armed with a large plastic bin, sheet of plywood and a white coat (no matadour jackets being to hand) he was shaken out of his AV reverie and caught in the bin - and humanely deposited back through the window to scamper off.

No doubt telling many a tale around the squirrel campfire this evening...

#73 - MTF - that was the answer I wanted to hear - good for you. Seven lawns with a three wheeled lawnmower is no fun - do you think you may have a lawnmower with a full complement of wheels before the summer's over?

He'll go down in squirrel folklore for his bravery and his grandchildren will tell their grandchildren who in turn will tell their grandchildren...

#77 - how exciting - that'll be an experience, travelling by train. I'm sure you'll have a fab time. The boys and I are having a few days in a couple of youth hostels in Scotland at the beginning of August. We have to catch a train to the second youth hostel as it is inaccessible by car - liking the sound of the isolation - don't know how the boys will cope tho'. ;)

I wouldn't say I was a massive fan of The Pet Shop Boys, but I have liked some of their stuff in the past, and this is very nicely done.

#82 Zoe, I love the first 10-12 minutes with the rhythmic music and 'robotic' workers dancing. And when the princess does her own lilttle dance! I found it all quite mesmerising. I made Mrs Snapper sit down and watch it!! LOL

I haven't got to the song that Guy Chambers and Rufus Wainright are working on yet, but I don't think Rufus Wainright is really the traditional ballad writing type :/

There's something about Rufus Wainwright's voice that I just don't like. Really not for me at all.

#92 I like his voice, but I just don't think he is mainstream, trying to fit into the traditional ballad box, just isn't his style, I think that's why the end song isn't much cop - he just isn't 'feeling' it.



Listening to Boy George and Sting talk about 'Do You Really Want To hurt Me' and 'Every Breath You Take', it is evident that the best songs have to mean something, they have to speak to a truth about who we are, and the experiences we go through.



Manufactured pop has been successful, but the stuff that really endures are the songs that really mean something, and they have their own story behind them.

Time to toodle off home.
