#25 PPS Hi Tortie, I am at home at the moment as my new employers wanted me to work even longer than 40 hours a week, shame as I really liked it there but always really only wanted part time, as life is pretty full on at home at the moment. They want me to work part time until they can find someone else, which I might do. Apparently, it took them ages to find me so it may work out quite well!

Both my boys thoroughly enjoyed the HP books. As the books got thicker, bedtime story session got longer. Oldest boy even put off moving to his own room, cos he didn't want ot miss out, bless! When HP7 got handed to me through the window (postie couldn't fit it in through letterbox, hehehe) that was it. I couldn't wait. It took me from Saturday morning to the wee hours of Sunday morning to finish, only breaking off to make sure the boys were fed and watered. It was a right old roller coaster of a trip. From floods of tears to befuddlement back to floods of tears. Then I had to do it all again when reading HP7 to the boys. JKR, me and my boys think you are wonderful.

#54 Toots, I know exactly what you mean - it's always nerve-wracking when you have to work for someone different, as you don't know how they like things done, or what is expected of you. I'm sure you'll be fine.

I'm curious about how people choose their oldies suggestions. When I seen what the theme is going to be, I 'brainstorm' on a piece of paper any songs that come to mind that might have anything to do with the theme. More often than not there's some quite obvious ones (which inevitably lots of other people also suggest!) - sometimes I can ONLY think of the obvious, but occasionally I get what I consider to be quite a clever one.



And it's more of a challenge to come up with something that nobody else has.



I only resort to Google if I don't know the name of an artist, or if I don't want to embarrass myself by spelling it wrongly. And I try keep it to a maximum of 6 or 7 songs - actually I can rarely think of more than that number, although sometimes I'll reject a song that subsequently gets played.

Part three - this only seems to happen in the middle of the day:



For me it's not so much about getting a mensh (although that's quite nice once in a while!), but more to do with being on the right lines - I get pleasure from a song I've suggested being played even if somebody else gets the credit for it.

For oldie suggestions - I have Googled, but I tend to be able to come up with four or five suggestions on my own first. I only usually Google if I'm unsure of the artist, song name etc or if the theme is a bit tricky, but then sometimes (like today) I don't always proffer any suggestions.



There is something lovely about bagging a mensh, but it's great to hear a song you suggested getting played never-the-less.



I mainly just like the fact that Simon (and the team) takes the time (in his VERY busy schedule) to read the blog, and our tweets ;) It is nice that things we tweet/text in are sometimes read out, or used in a feature on the show e.g Rebecca talking about Independent's Day yesterday after Paul mentioned it on the blog, and I tweeted about it.

Thanks for the welcomes.... I often read but only rarely get time to contribute. Now things are begining to ease off towards the holidays (I'm a teacher) - my goal is to get an oldie played (I don't even dare to dream about ARF!)



Yes, Deebee definitely female (and struggling with a crush on Jon BJ which is unseemly for a woman in her latter 30s ;)



Simon is lovely too of course ...... but in less of a 'rock-god' kind of way!



Anyway oldies - I always love to read the suggestions and am unfailing impressed by the range and cleverness of them. I tend to stick to what I know - but it's pretty eclectic so I've usually got one or two I hope to hear on any given night. Occasionally I'll google to check the absolutely correct title or lyric - but not for suggestions per se.

#54. Toots, perhaps your discomfort at suddenly having to do secretarial work for a 'new' boss after thirty or so years is something to do with the unknown. You might subconscoiusly be worried that he (or she) could suddenly come up with new words in dictation, that you had previously never heard and were having trouble spelling. Don't worry, chuck. This is perfectly nobroulous, and in any case is usually frailled by scumffer.

#68 good topic for discussion Deebee. I am envious of those that have quicker brains than I have.



For me it depends when the new blog arrives and whether I can switch from work to blog. I use a post it (other bits of paper...) to gather initial brain waves then usually use my iPad or amazon to check any artists I'm unsure of. Rarely come up with more than 3/4. It can be disheartening to come on and find all the songs I've thought of already chosen. I know it's not always the first ones that are given menshes but I personally don't like adding to an already long list of choosers.



Because I rarely get a mensh I do tend to celebrate, although i celebrate just as much for fellow blogpoppets. My last mensh was for a song I hadn't chosen LOL!

Usually I peruse my music on the 'puter. Occasionally I resort to Google, depending on how busy I am and I only suggest them if I know the song. I wonder who else will admit to using Google?

I too resort to the WWW when I think of a tune but not sure of it's 'official' title, or artist spelling (like I suggested Yakety Yak last week, it was actually called something else officially, so I wasn't included on the list of menshees)....I use my brain (depending on the time of day, amount of caffeine etc) and then resort to Brain #2, aka my ipod - which means that all my suggestions are usually straight from the ♥ of my music tastes.



I've rejected thoughts before for songs I don't actually like - and think perhaps that some of that goes on at R2 DT pow wow each day, it has to be radio friendly and pop-y but not too much so.



I will prob miss the blog for 2 days, we have Open Days here, when we steer prospective studes and their sometimes pushy parents through talks, info, tours etc. It is usually chaos!

Thank goodness we managed to get the squirrel to vacate the premises...



Will listen to the show though, hopefully!

#68 Deebee, I am not too bothered getting a mensh, either. I choose songs which I'd like to hear on the radio and I know, because they are often album tracks and a little obscure, that they stand little chance of being played. In fact, the only time I've had menshes is when the track has been blindingly obvious.



I have said this before, and it's one of my main gripes with ARF, there are millions of great tunes that Radio2 could play and yet we hear the same stuff over and over again. I understand that I could just put on a CD but you forget so many good songs and the radio (and this here blog) is my way re-newing my acquaintance with great music. That's why I like the themed oldies; not so much for what will be played on the show, but for the reminders of forgotten treasures.

Deebs, I will admit to having used Google to try to find a choon for themes but it has never been of any help. I use my noggin, and as you must have realised by now, the old noggin is so full of such other bits and pieces that my music knowledge rarely comes to the fore. My routine now is, I read Simon's blog to see what the theme is, go off and have a think and if I can come up with a choon, I'll just pop right in with it. I used to check to see if my suggestions had already been requested and if they had I didn't post them but of late, if I didn't post the first appropriate tune that pops into my head I'd never post anything and I'd just be here for the beer, errr no, the social side of things.

I used to apologise for duplications but to paraphrase the lovely KatyMac - just because you were first person to post a tune, you don't have exclusive ownership of it. I have a couple of good ARFO suggestions (imho) one of which I heard on JW's show on Sunday, forgot it by Monday breakfast but have since remembered it again phew! Similarly with a choon I heard on the BBC's coverage of Glasto, had forgotten which the choon by Friday past but have since remembered it again. both choons are safely stored in my memory bank so look out on Friday - you're looking at the new ARFO Queen. I hope Julia40 has kept the crown nicely polished for me ;)

#82 I agree with you on the ARFO, and the ARF in general, Harry, the same songs have been trotted out too many times, which is probably why I am less sorry if I miss Friday's show!



I also like to hear oldie songs that I haven't heard on the radio for ages, and I think on the whole, Simon and Co are pretty good at choosing a wide range of oldies, and they don't always go for the obvious ones.

I have to add that DT and this blog have introduced to much music I would otherwise have missed.

My method of selection usually involves brain racking as well ,by the time i get on the blog most of the obvious selection have been chosen . like Guitar Man by Bread today. actually not I song would have chosen anyway !



I think the best chooses tend to be the more clever ones that don't actually feature the key works in the title , like "blowing in the wind" last week or even my own great choice of "unchain my heart" last night. These types of songs tend to be harder to google as you need to either know the lyrics or think out the box in management speak

#87 'course the trouble with the ARF is that if someone asks for an obscure song - how long will it take a researcher to get it out of the dusty box, wipe it off and hand to Lord 'Marlene Dietrich' Ammo?

An album track of years gone by gotta be hard to get played too, if they weren't released as 'radio friendly' singles' length tracks.



In these days of 'virtual' music, should be a cinch (is that spelt right? looks wrong!) but my favourite ever song is 'Beware of the beautiful stranger' by Pete Atkins..but you try finding a copy you don't have to pay for (ie Yo*tube) draws a blank...

Re choosing tunes and menshes. Depending on the subject I usually get one or two songs pop into my head straight away. I like to try and think of songs that have lyrics that fit the topic rather than just the title if possible (which it isn't always!). I usually then have a couple more flashes of inspiration over the next hour or so. I sometimes check song lyrics on line just to make sure I haven't been singing the wrong words for years (like the line in 'Spanish Lullaby' by Madonna - "Young girls with eyes like potatoes..."). I try and suggest something I would genuinely like to hear - although I have suggested tracks that wouldn't necessarily be first on my playlist if I think they really fit the theme.



It's great to hear your name on the radio, especially the first time and on a national show, but, as others have said, I just like the fact I've chosen something that fits the bill more than anything else, and hope the people listening like it too. I love games and quizzes generally and have always loved music so this part of the show is right up my strasse. I also like to see what suggestions other people come up with as everyone has their own individual take on the theme, and musical influences, and then try and guess what Simon and the team finally choose.



And the ARFO? That still remains but an illusive dream pour moi....!
