Under attack

Simon Mayo|08:39 UK time, Wednesday, 6 July 2011

Morning to all, cool and damp here. A 'back-to-school' autumnal feel to things which is a bit rough as the holidays haven't even started (well not here anyway).

Had a race after the show yesterday to get to child 3's end of term show and made it for his bit by the skin of my teeth. As I legged it into the playground, he stepped up to the stage. This wasn't enough however, to prevent the 'so what was my first line then?' style of questioning but a most enjoyable evening of poems and songs was had and we all duly held our phones up to record the moment we were there for.

Earlier I had been to a screening of the new Harry Potter and then to a lunchtime showcase for the singer Jon Fratelli. This was memorable for a selection of well sung songs and for the fact that I sat next to David Jacobs. He greeted the start of a much too loud drum track on one song by leaning over and saying 'Sounds like my sort of music!'.

We go a-moshing later with a variety of well placed rock anthems after 6 and for the oldies today, let's do MOSQUITOES. We answered the 'why some get bitten and not others' question yesterday but apparently the weather at the moment is perfect for the little blighters. Heavy rain and sunny spells means that numbers will be especially high, particularly in Scotland. So that's GNATS, MIDGES, MOSSIES and any other blood thirsty predators that might ruin your holiday.

Have a triumphant and prosperous Wednesday, see you after 5.

    Morning all

Apologoes for the late arrival - I've been trying to get through to the Beko helpline -to absolutely no avail! You get a recorded message telling you to hold and then the line goes dead - not very good!

So, no suggestions from me today, but I was interested to hear the talk about mossies and repelling them; Mr T was thoroughly munched last week in Greece; he obviously tastes better than me! I guess the brewers yeast idea is the same as eating Marmite (other spreads, etc) for a couple of weeks before going on holiday.

Will report back later on the Beko saga (assuming I find someone to talk to!)

    One last oldie suggestion...

    THE FLY - CHUBBY CHECKER

  • Comment number 37.

EATEN ALIVE - Diana Ross (sounding suspiciously like Michael Jackson)

I never get bitten. But I do eat Marmite. Mrs Good gets peppered by the blighters, and so do the Junior BGs. Also, picking up from yesterday's discussion, am I the only person to be in the 5th decade of my life and have no clue what blood group I am??? How do I find out??? I once asked my doctor and he said they don't test just to make a note of it in my records - it's only when needed. What does that mean? When I've been knocked down by a bus and need a blood transfusion, and THEN they do the test, thereby wasting critical minutes? This could keep me awake at night.

*Stops rambling, before paranoia sets in*

  • Comment number 38.

    Is it Friday yet?

Dont you just love an ELO song with a great ending?

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 39.

#37 I eat Marmite too, JBG - maybe I should get some brewer's yeast tablets for Mr T before we next go away, as won't go near Marmite!

I only know what my blood group is because I give blood.

#35 Thanks Julia - still no reply!

  • Comment number 40.

#37 I found out my blood group when I was pregnant, it was a big deal at the time because I am A negative and my twins were O positive, and I had to have a few injections to stop anti-bodies forming.

My mister asked if he could find out his blood group, but he got told the same as you, they would only test for it if a blood transfusion was needed!

I think you can pay privately to have it done, but no idea how much this costs. Also I believe that O negative is the universal donor blood, so they could always give you that while they determine your actual blood group.

  • Comment number 41.

Morning all. Struggling with the oldies other than anything by Sting and I'm sure there's a group called The Bees but have no clue about any of their songs.....

SPIDERS AND SNAKES - JIM STAFFORD

UGLY BUG BALL - BURL IVES - ( always used to be on junior choice with Ed Stewart)

  • Comment number 44.

Inspiratino just hit me between the eyes

TIME OF THE SEASON - the Zombies

#39/40 Oh well, ignorance is bliss! If the Marmite theory is true, this year I will have zero bites as I'm on a "marmite diet" to try to reduce my cheese intake - whenever I fancy cheese on crackers, or a cheese sandwich, or cheese anything, I have marmite instead. And it's working! But my sodium levels are probably sky high...

    Coffee time...

Thanks for the contributions to yesterday's discussion about how people find oldies to suggest. I think the conclusion was that we mainly use our hippocampuses rather than our fingers, making us all a very clever bunch of blogpoppets! And we know from Simon's blog the day after the Sony Awards that he is grateful for our input to the show. So well done us!

I did know my blood group - I only ever gave blood once, but I nearly passed out. Not because I don't like the sight of blood, I just hadn't eaten. It was my own fault. Still, it put me off doing it again.

I rarely get troubled by mozzies, but I have been bitten by horseflies a few times and their bites are incredibly itch and painful. And they seem to last for ages, and gradually get bigger and bigger. Nasty horrible things...

    Good morning everyone.

I'm a little late as I've had a few virus problems with my laptop but it seems to be clean now. I haven't read through yet but the theme of 'blood thristy predators' makes me immediately think of:

  • Comment number 56.

Wow, this morning hasn't exactly gone to plan! Didn't get a chance to think of any songs.

I know my blood group because my Mum used to work in the Blood Transfusion Service and would call me for my AB+ if there was a shortage. There is something very useful about my blood apparently. Haven't given for too long. Was rejected at one point because I'd had acupuncture, then because I had been to Azerbaijan. Should be ok now so should make the effort.

  • Comment number 57.

#37 JBG, as Tortie says, if you give blood they will tell you your blood group. And then, if you are hit by a bus, and you do need a transfusion, you won't feel guilty for drawing from a bank to which you have never contributed ;-)

Speaking of blood types, there's an article in today's Guardian on what the Japanese say your blood group says about you:

    https://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jul/05/blood-type-say-about-you

    Type A

    Best traits: Creative, sensible

    Worst traits: Fastidious, stubborn

    Best traits: Creative, passionate

    Worst traits: Selfish, irresponsible

    Type AB

    Hellooooooo!! Here I am!

Where have the days gone? I am busier being unemployed than I was when I was working! The ironing basket is empty (for the first time in 2 years), the laundry bins are likewise empty, the bathroom shines, the cats are brushed, quotes for removal companies are received and I have an interview tomorrow which requires research. Phew!

How are you all? MCW, sorry to hear about the job but, as you said, it was not your intention to be a full-time wage slave so good for you for sticking to your guns. Belated happy birthday Billie! Gazza - you have packed already? Deebee, well done on reuniting dog and owner. JBG, I don't know my blood group either.

Hello to everyone else! (waves madly!)

  • Comment number 71.

As a kid I always had problems with biting insects, and suffered terrible swellings around the site of any successful bites, many are the occassions when I was walking around with arms like Popeye during cricket matches, because the little biters had been having a damn good snack on me. Fortunately this problem has reduced as I have become more sedentary!

I would choose Genesis - Carpetcrawlers for an appropriate song today particularly the line of "the fleas cling to the golden fleece, hoping they'll find peace!" If they cling to me too long now, they certainly find some sort of peace (rest in peace)(or pieces)!.

Or Run DMC/Aerosmith - Walk this way! Well it contains scratching!

Hello everyone... first time post for me. How about "Midge" Ure and Call of the wild ? Too cheesy a pun for you ?

  • Comment number 79.

Blood type? Ain't got a clue. A friend and I gave blood when we were working for the Army in Berlin - what an experience - never to be repeated. Apparently, during the actual taking of the blood process, despite feeling totally fine, I went a rather worrying shade of white and the nurses made such a blimmin' fuss, it scared me half to death. The recompense was the lovely spread of open sandwiches and fruit they laid on for the donors - truth be told, that's the only reason we went - we were too young and daft to take it more seriously, The then husband had a fit when I told him I'd given blood - he was worried I'd get Aids!?! Eh??? Is it me??? :s

  • Comment number 81.

#69 Which blood type makes you unable to believe pseudo-psychological mumbo-jumbo...?

    ;o)

Had a lovely swim, followed by a disgusting sandwich which I bought from the petrol station this morning when I went to fill up. It was apparently 'creamy tandoori and salad'. I still have no idea what - if any - meat was in it. I could only eat half, and I was still hungry so I had to go and get a packet of crisps. Thereby probably undoing any good I did from the swim. Ho hum...

#81 Have you read the article, Deebee?

  • Comment number 88.

#87 Harry, yes I have. I also have a psychology degree and know a bit about personality traits and the theories behind why people have certain predispositions.

And I stand by my comment.

    ;o)

  • Comment number 89.

#69 I read that article Harry, it seems a bit like horoscope types to me, in that it is a collection of general traits that might, or might not chime with a lot of people.

There is also the blood type diet, apparently as an 'A' I should be mostly vegetarian, and eat little or no meat or fish, but lots of past and rice.

It's funny because I was a vegetarian for years, and now I do eat a lot of vegetarian meals, probably 4 days out of 7. I am not a big fan of fish anyway, and never have been, so maybe there's something in it after all :/

  • Comment number 90.

#92 Zoe, you should tweet 'National Kissing Day' as a 3 worder. I thought about doing it myself, but as you were the one to discover it, it's only fair that it should be yours. It would be a good one for Simon to read out.

    Afternoon all,

MAD day here in Oxford with visiting prospective studes and parents - and in the time-honoured tradition of the Blog, as I had a mensh last night (albeit for the right song, wrong artist?!) will duck out of any mossie ideas today.

Itchycoo park is my fave so far, and reminds me of listening to Annie Nightingale on Sunday afternoons, doing my dreaded weekend homework...

I found the info on remedies and preventions for mossies v useful tho as I am being taken to St Lucia in August by and with my lovely Sis-in-Law and her lovely airmiles (who needs the Euro lottery anyways) and am known as the 'pin cushion' or could be a substitute 'Gorgonzola in the corner of the room' as I attract them away from anyone else.

I'm hoping to find some serious spray/lotion before I go (plus they sell one over there called 'Kill' or 'attack' apparently) which I need to find asap when I land.

Good luck with the menshes tonight, I'm hoping to hear the show - but the M-in-law has been released back into the wild this afternoon so is going to need some attention/shopping/etc after work/pilates before I can even get home to my radio.

Maybe tomorrow will be less mad, hopefully.

    Enjoy your eves.

ps No more LUTHER!! Only 4 episodes - what a swizz.

#96 Haha! The thought of Lord Ammo reading out 'MWAH'... do you think he and Sally will have a discussion about how to pronounce it?

    ;o)

Daughter just texted to say she's arrived safely in Crete and is sitting by the pool in the sunshine. It's alright for some...
