Man Flu

Simon Mayo|09:57 UK time, Thursday, 7 July 2011

Blog late, blogger poorly. Assuming show will be fine though can't be sure. Mr Allinson, stand by your phone. It all depends how much throatiness anyone can endure really. Early night here in an attempt to fend off the evil powers of horribleness only partly successful. We shall see.

I can only express disappointment at Nigel's choice of food today. Fondue? Really? Does anyone do the fondue thing anymore? "Come round we're having an evening of melted cheese" doesn't sound that enticing to my ears. But, of course, I have been wrong before with Nigel and am happy to be proved so again.

Also, it'll hardly fill me up as I head off (sickness permitting) to the Harry Potter premiere tonight. If I go as a death eater maybe I'll blend in more. The red carpet will take 10 minutes to walk down apparently and is arranged like Diagonal Alley. Children 1,2 and 3 will make an appearance and I will shuffle in hassled and late. 'Strictly No Admittance after 6.30' is what it says on the invite but I trust the usual speeches will stretch things a bit.

Have an ache-free and non-sweaty Thursday, and leave your songs of magic and wizardry below. See you after 5.

This always happens when you are looking forward to something exciting! I remember a day or two before the Children In Need Telethon, coming down with a horrendous 'flu-like lurgie, I think Deebee had it too. But nothing was going to stop me going and thanks to a certain brand of 'flu remedy, I survived although my voice completely disappeared the next day!

Get well soon, Simon. I really hope that you are well enough to see the film.

Awww! get well soon Simon. As i have been told by the predominately male demographic at our kickboxing club ..... Man Flu is a million times worse than childbirth... I take their word for it...im sure my mate is outnumbered in his thinking by those that have experienced childbirth!

Thanks for the mention for the Queen toonage ( nice as cakeage!) yesterday and congrats to Lucies Mum and everyone else who was lucky!

Enjoy the soaking wet weather again everyone.

Morning all. Poor Simon; I hope you feel better soon. I love fondue once in a while … (there’s a great little Swiss place in Wardour Street)

Anyway Chris Evans has already referenced HP7b in relation to ARF favourite Wizzard so for something different:

“Witchcraft” or “Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered” – Frank Sinatra

And because I’m still on my Bon Jovi kick: “Make a Memory” (as it relates to Dumbledore, Snape etc and the revelations of the pensieve)

    But I've never done cheese.

I've always done the hot oil thing - for cooking chunks of assorted meats. Dips, sauces and garnishes at the ready.

KatyMac, I still have my fondue set too and I've only ever done the hot oil thing. My one was a present from some friends we had lodging with us for a few weeks whilst they cleaned their quarter before they left Berlin for the UK in the very early 90s. Such fun.

MCW - Mmmm yum, prawn cocktail and my fave butterscotch delight of angels - how very exotic.

  • Comment number 39.

    Oh dear, poor Lord Ammo.

    *GET WELL SOON*

He's caught between a rock and a red carpet...if he is 'off sick' from the BBC R2 DT show, he can hardly be seen scooting up the red carpet at a film premiere, can he?

Gotta do it all, then - or wear a balaclava.

One of my daughter's school friends is going to the premier, as her grannie is an author of childrens books too. The 1 accompanying friend she was allowed to take was chosen from a very very long list! There are no doubt now ex-friends by the score.

I think we are just doing illness as a theme, no? and maybe with a folk edge, as it's Wednesday?

There is 'Broken man's lament' by Emmylou Harris, would fit the bill nicely!

No chance of a mensh, so we can go for the less obvious choons.

2nd Open day for prospective students is much quieter than 1st yesterday (which was 100 down on last year, maybe also a sign of the times regarding the new £9k fees?!

    Have a nice day y'all.

    ;o)

#19 Mmmm - Angel Delight! There's a blast from the past. I used to love the butterscotch flavoured one.

By the way, I hope I didn't sound TOO enthusiastic at the thought of Richard Allinson sitting in today. I would of course much prefer Lord Ammo to be well enough to do the show.

First off - massive congrats Mandy on achieving your 2nd Dan :)

Deebs - glad to hear daughterpoppet made it safely to Crete :)

MTF When are you off across La Manche? Are you St Malo-ing?

Darn it - missed the lovely MaddyMoon's birthday do next door.

Where's Toots ? Has she been here and I've missed her posts?

Tortie - good to see you back from your holiday :) I believe PSL is sunning it in Lanza as we speak.

Billiepoppet Surely you can have an occasional Choon Choose whilst you're here?! Also, your monitoring of the menshes during the show is rather popular - especially for those who don't get to hear their own :)

Greetings to all other blogpopsters I haven't mentioned by name - I still haven't read back thoroughly over the last couple of days - I'll do that now ..

Perhaps Simon will co-opt Matt, Rebecca and Nigel to do the talking for him later - but then again - the word 'bunfight' springs to mind ...

I agree Deebee, Mr A would be a rather wonderful stand-in.

I used to make the cheese fondues with Gruyere, Emmental and Kirsch. The ancient fork prong thingies are still going strong and make excellent bathroom plughole unblockers! I hasten to add that I don't use them as they were intended anymore!

Best fondue I had was in the early eighties at the Swiss Centre in London.

I was given a fondue set as a wedding present (early 80s) after having fondues when on holiday in Austria. Don't think I did a cheese one, but certainly did the oil, meat, bread type and a chocolate one with fruit to dip (not both together!)

    Morning everyone,

So sorry to hear you're lurgy is worsening, Simon; hope you feel better soon - I'd advise staying away from the fondue as it's notoriously phlegm inducing (apologies anyone having a late breakfast).

Toots - apologies for not replying yesterday - I was indeed waving to you from the eastern border, staring wistfully at the rather distant North Sea coast...

Billie - high five on reaching your first mensh centenary, may you have many more :-D

LuciesMum - Happy Birthday! Hope you have a loverly day.

  • Comment number 62.

I know you've been poorly but if the invitation's for 6.30 and your show finishes at 7, are you not using your throat infection as an excuse to "bunk off" work and go to this star-studded knees-up? I'm sure Dr Mosh and the team would be thrilled to take over the show for one night. No need to call for Mr Allison. While your voice has been husky, you sound like the guy who does promos for Talksport. Has your agent got you voiceover-bookings for "manly" ads? Get well soon.

  • Comment number 63.

Due to the current stage in our kitchen renovations, I am oven less and hob less (not an expression found in an Andy Fairweather Low song!) and so have been serving up wonderful microwave 'delights' and salads for the past few days. Some of those 1970's instant dishes would come in handy right now!

That list I did yesterday - from the 2010 Bug Theme Day - there was a tune on it that actually got played last year - so at the risk of receiving the HOIB and groans from Ken Jude and Paul O'S I shall plump for:

    MAGIC FLY - SPACE

Seeing as we are doing a spot of reminiscing today (fondues etc), while I was out with my dogs first thing this morning walking amongst lots of rye grass,

    https://farm6.static.flickr.com/5273/5911944912_b89e3bc693.jpg

it reminded me of a 'fortune telling' game we played as kids, to see who we would marry.... we used to start from the bottom of the piece of grass, touching each seed in turn, saying "tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief" then, when shall I marry? "this year, next year, sometime, never" also a few more things like what colour will I wear "pink, white, blue" and so on.....

Did anyone on here play these rhyming type games, also skipping rhymes etc?

    x

  • Comment number 72.

#71 That has taken me right back to School Dinners, LuciesMum! If you were unlucky enough to be on 'last sitting' in the dinner queue, the only pudding left would be prunes and custard!!

We used to play the 'tinker, tailor' game with the prune stones left on the plate.

Don't think I've ever eaten a prune knowingly ever since!

  • Comment number 73.

Earlier in the week, Suzie mentioned the disproportionate number of ARFO songs from the 1970s, pleading for more from the 80s. Using Katy's list I've dated all the songs played so far and the results are:

    2 songs from the 1950s;

    2 songs from the 1960s;

    45 songs from the 1970s (although this includes 12 plays of just 4 songs);

    21 songs from the 1980s (including 6 plays of 3 songs);

    1 song from the 1990s.

I can post the full list (bearing in mind it is Katy's hard work and all I've done is sort them) if anyone would like to see it?

    Hello all

There is a certain airiness and easy-come-easy-go lackadaisical quality about the blog today. I like it.

We have a fondue set. Once a year, usually in winter, we get it out and have a cheese fondue evening. Lots of fun, lots of accusations of double-dipping and leaving "floaters". And then we all feel really sick with big gloopy ball of rubbery cheese in our tummies, and vow not to do it again. Until next year..

Katy Keeper of the Lists - you haven't seen my shopping list have you? It's not where I left it and I could be doing with having it with me for today's foray into the supermarche for next week's vittles. If it's gotten mixed in with your playlist lists, could you just scan it over to me, please?

The Big Biscuit made me think of Waggon Wheels (other round chocolate biscuits...).

Harry... I bet Katy has a similar list... with everyone's name alongside each song! ;o)

I've only had one ARF played a few weeks ago and wonder how many people's tunes have been chosen more than once and who has never had an ARF played!

  • Comment number 97.

WOW Harry! Never mond the format, the data is very interesting.

    Did someone mention biscuits?

Fondues - there used to be a fondue restaurant in Aberdeen. Didn't last very long but was great fun for a girls' night out. The trick was leaving enough room for the chocolate fondue for pudding/dessert/afters.

LuciesMum, I had completely forgotten that! Definitely did it with prunes. We had bowls that came with the rhyme around the rim. I don't recall eating the prunes. Must have nicked my Mum and Dad's stones ;-)

#96 LuciesMum, this is Katy's list. All I've done is add the dates. Seems Suzie was correct that it is mainly 1970s songs but the 80s do get decent coverage, too.
