Wet Friday. Play indoors.

Simon Mayo|08:15 UK time, Friday, 8 July 2011

Morning from a distinctly damp and cool London. It's classic summer holiday weather. Our family holidays were often in Cornwall and this is the weather that would traditionaly produce some fine surfing followed by a cup-a-soup in the beach hut. Eventually the cool would seep through and we'd have to go and watch "Herbie Rides Again". For years, it was always "Herbie Rides Again". This may well be my imagination but these were summers of fixed choices: more surfing, more fish and chips or more Herbie. And if times were really bad, it would be back to the beach hut for another soup. Heady days.

(Derby in 1841 on July 8th was slightly more interesting. The Times reports it was a day of heavy rain, hail and a storm of frogs and fish. What we would have given for a freak storm like that to rescue us from our beach hut boredom).

So the Family Mayo gathered in Leicester Square last night (there were others too) and relished the final HP film. I was out of the R2 door before Bob's first tune had finished (so will need to catch up later) and walked as fast as my aching limbs would take me through the swaying crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the stars. Hogwarts uniforms, death eaters and assorted wizards jostled with security guys and baffled tourists. After the teary speeches it was on with the hideous 3d glasses and battle commenced.

"It was epic " declared child 3 as we left and that's about right really. I'm talking to a very reluctant Ralph Fiennes on the 5 Live show today. He's great as Voldemort but not a natural promotions man I feel.

After 5 it's the All Request Friday steamroller and that world conquering opening song is all your responsibility (you and the muggles). Pick a blinder. See you after 5.

Morning Simon and fellow Bloggers .

Great to get a meench last night show and thanks to all the mentions on the blog last night.

Glad it is Friday again, as it has been another long week up here in Yorkshire.

Daughter 2 has been away for a few days on a taster session at Oxford Uni . She found it scary !

Daughter 1 who is working in the same company as me on her summer break from Uni has been stressed as the boss got her serving coffee, teas and sandwiches to a group of 14 bussiness people on a seminar on site here yesterday. At least she can put “Events Manager” or something similar on her CV now . She could even use “Brand Awareness Ambassador” or one of the other many strange job titles that only seem to exist on the “The Apprentice”.

Anyhow enought of that, my request for ARFO is as usual the very wonderful :-

Morning Simon, team and fellow blogpoppets (and Muggles on t'other side!),

I remember family summers like that, except most of ours were spent on the coasts of Hampshire and Dorset, not a lot of surf there! And not only Herbie Rides Again but 'The World's Greatest Athlete' and a Children's Film Foundation offering.

I am looking forward to the new Harry Potter film, and I'm glad you had a great evening.

My choice for ARFO today is PRETTY FLAMINGO by MANFRED MANN

but if that doesn't 'float your boat', can I be sneaky and ask for:

LIGHT MY FIRE by THE DOORS ?

Wishing everyone a relaxing and sunny weekend.

    Hi all.

Glad you made the HP premiere Simon.

I'll try picking a blinder for ARF toonage:

    1. LISTEN TO THE MUSIC - Doobies

    2. LONG TRAIN RUNNING - Doobies

    3. CROCODILE ROCK - Elton John

    4. MAKE ME SMILE - Steve H and Cockney Rebel

    5. RUN TO YOU - Bryan Adams

Have a lovely weekend and hope you stay dry.

    Hi MTF,

Good luck at the doctors, hope that you start to feel better soon.

Loved the late night posts from Deebee and Lucie'sMum last night.

Very sorry that Jonny is leaving The Breakfast Show, but I'm sure he will make an excellent English teacher. The Ice Hockey Sporting Challenge will always be my favourite, Jonny and Chris made me laugh so much in that!

LuciesMum & Tortie, I could have listened to the show in the office this morning but I had already had a wee weep on the journey in to work. Willl save for the weekend when I'm at home.

Glad the wasps have gone, Tortie. I have a horror story from my childhood about wasps.

Our summers were spent on the Banffshire coast. If it rained the kids just kept on playing in the sea while the adults barbecued under makeshift shelters. What fun! And what fantastic memories.

A quick appearance from me, and I have been gathering a shopping list of ARFOs as the week progresses. Perhaps one of them will hit the spot:

SINCE YOU BEEN GONE - RAINBOW ( a song I once hated, and now I love)

SHE"S NOT THERE - SANTANA (starts quietly, manic finale)

ITCHYCOO PARK - Small Faces (still irritated it wasn't picked for mosquito day)

HERE COMES THE SUMMER - Undertones (school hols begin today. Yes, they do)

WHY DOES IT ALWAYS RAIN ON ME - Travis (see above)

JOHNNY BE GOOD - Chuck Berry (just because)

    Good day all.

No kickboxing gradings for me Mo for another 3 years.....when 3rd Dan beckons..lot easier syllabus but with the added requirement of a portfolio of what you have done for the sport during the time you have participated. Thanks for asking. My mate who owns the club has been 2nd Dan since December 2000 when I atained my White Belt so the pressure is on him to get his 3rd Dan in December because I am the same grade now and his nephew is going for 2nd Dan in December if his fitness levels are up to it. We have a few again going for 1st black belt grades in December also...well its the quality of the teaching of course!!!! lol.

I have personal training session on Sunday but may go to a competition at the Aston Villa Leisure Centre, i know there is a comp next Sunday at Cheltenham too.

The kitchen is coming on in leaps and bounds. All the walls have been painted, lighting is in and the floor tiles have been laid. The cupboards are going in as we speak and tomorrow we are going to choose the granite worktops. Still no cooker and hob, getting sick of microwavable meals tbh! But there is no dust now, yippee!

Can I sneak in another ARF choice? (seeing as peeps are going for multiples!)

EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD by TEARS FOR FEARS (my favouritist song ever!)

Aww... I was just listening to Jonny Saunders who was beginning to get a little emotional when thanking his colleagues, I enjoyed Father Brian's specially written piece and Hells Bells sounded tearful...

Good Luck Jonny, you'll be missed on the radio but your pupils will love you to bits!

    Simon & Team –

I may have achieved 100 menshes but I’ve never had an ARFO!

    Please may I request -

THE BEAT - by The Look ?

It is the most rhythmicallyinspiringsteeringwheelanddashboardthumping song from

the very first second to the very last.

    AND – as I’ve said before –

IF IT WASN’T FOR THE BEAT – THERE WOULD BE NO MUSIC AT ALL!

Ah - there you all are !

Let's continue in the spirit of Simon's blog and spread a huge smile over this damp day.

Excellent blogging yesterday, team. I'm with Deebs and LM - this is just the finest place to stop by and visit - be it for a fleeting moment or a lengthy sesh.

    The mighty ARFO then.

I like the idea of multiple selections - Friday has been a day of restraint thus far - who's to stop us asking for as many options as we like? When our collective music taste has been acknowledged by the mighty ... how can we fail?!

To start I shall opt for:

REWARD - TEARDROP EXPLODES [for the best ending of a pop song ever]

I may come back and choose some more.

But first I shall call in next door and register my admiration for the splendid era of Jonny Saunders - anyone care to join me?

Simon, you are 'sounding' much better today. Glad you made it to Harry Potter, and I look forward to the review on 5 Live. Maybe next time you should pre-record the last half hour of the show, and get a cardboard cut-out of yourself for the webcam. I'm sure nobody would notice...

I start work at 9.30, and I sat in the car listening to the last bit of the Breakfast Show. Surprised myself by getting a bit emotional at Johnny Saunders leaving. He will be missed, but I'm sure Vassos will be a worthy replacement.

#22 I will be pooping next door at lunchtime to do that very thing.

Good Morning Everyone and, of course, Simon The Formerly Proper Poorly Drivetime Dude, The Team and The NYM,

Glad you and your family enjoyed the film last night and that you made it on time - I was a bit fretful hoping you wouldn't be late. We spent summer hols on the east coast of Scotland at my Granda's. Long sunny days were spent on the beach - no surfing there and the wet days were spent round the dining table sketching, playing card games and / or being the annoying little sister - that's the bit I did best apparently ;)

I'm glad everyone has gone for multiple offerings today as I had two that I couldn't decide between so here goes:-

    PAPER PLANE - STATUS QUO

    I WILL FOLLOW - U2

Mo, hate to say it but I think my two have the edge on yours (tic), ;) xx

Off to catch up on the late night sesh from yesterday.

    Have a wonderful Friday :)

And because it's conspicuous by its absence from the official ARFO :-)

  • Comment number 36.

Good Morning Each! Well, a few tears seem to have been shed next door, what with Jonny leaving, and all. It seems more like Goodbye Mr Chips than Goodbye Mr Saunders. Rightly so, though. Whatever you think of Chris Evans, he is an astute fellow, and he knew what he was doing when he took Jonny with him from Drivetime to Breakfast. Broadcastings loss is teachings gain, and I think he will do OK. Good luck, Johnny.

    Hello All,

Simons blog reminds me of family holidays in Southwold, swimming in the sea whilst it was raining, beach huts, fish and chips and rain and going to see Carry On films as a treat!

Great posts so far and some good ARF suggestions, no doubt some exellent choices still to follow.

Nothing from me today still glowing as had a tune played the other week, and that was something else.....

Somewhat surprisingly I had to do some real teaching this morning! However I have managed a post on each day this week so feeling proud (no oldies actually played - but I accept that I wasn't going for popular ones ;o)

Hope everyone is well in spite of the weather - nice to see tales of English seaside holidays ...

ARF - well, I know it won't get played (and it's about Mondays & Saturdays so not even appropriate) but I love the sentiment of:

Someday I'll be Saturday Night - by Bon Jovi

"Hey man I'm alive, taking each day a night at a time. Feeling like a Monday but someday I'll be Saturday night."

PS - just on the off-chance. There's a naughty word in the 1st verse of the album version so there must be a radio-friendly one somewhere!

So, reminisces inspired by Simons blog. Childhood holidays...

Train to Skegness, if we were lucky we'd get a compartment,if not, a train with a corridor. Some kid with a trolley at the station in Skeggy, getting a few bob for tugging the luggage to the caravan site, where the first job would be to connect the gas bottle to the 'van. Second job, Dad flitting from fitting to fitting replacing the gas mantles, damaging some along the way with heavy hands. The Ship Inn family room in the evenings, for shandy and GHolden Wonder crisps. Fish and chips, every evening, Dad having plaice, Mum and us kids having cod, childrens portions. The week (only ever one week) spent plucking up courage to ride on The Mighty Mouse. Paddling in the sea, crazy golf, donkey derby and bingo on the fairground, running and leaping about like a gazelle in the sand dunes. Happy days.

Racing off down to the beach as soon as we arrived, to see if our stream was still there, it always was!

Leaving Mum and Dad to unpack, we would get busy with our buckets and spades, building dams, creating huge pools desperately trying to fend off the incoming tide, it always won, but we put up a brave battle.

Then into Tenby, where we would make a beeline for the F*rte milk bar. We would each have a jam doughnut and a glass of lemonade with a straw in it. Then consequently get a ticking off for making that gurgling noise as we hit the bottom of the empty glass.

Dad would always have a milky coffee which came with a little packet of two sugar lumps, which we pocketed for the donkeys.

The donkey owner was always pleased to see us, as we would then take over his rides, tirelessly walking up and down the beach leading the excited children along on 'our' donkeys!

That evening swim, as the tide came in over the warm sands, while Mum was busy getting 'tea' ready.

Then late evening walks, searching out slow worms in the nearby woodland.

The best bit of all, the week seemed to last for ever in those days.

    Oh happy days indeed.

I survived my epic trip to Bournemouth and the interview seemed to go ok. An interesting project but a lot of travelling involved so I am not too sure. Train journey was great - I saw a little deer and some ponies as we trundled through the New Forest (at least, I think that's where we were).

Another interview today at 3pm. I had a call from my boss at my previous contract. He resigned and left before I did and has gone into the contracting world. He started a role last week and sees a need for yours truly so am seeing him and a colleague later.

    MTF & P O'Sheff, what lovely posts.

We would go every year to Milford on Sea on the edge of the New Forest, to stay in my Great Aunt's caravan there. I remember vividly the day Elvis died, listening to our small portable radio whilst Dad was cleaning the mullet he had caught earlier on a days deep sea fishing. We had a crabbing net that we would leave old fish heads in. The smellier the bait the larger prawns and crabs we caught. Had to leave it under the caravan at night!!! I remember lots of card games, 'Newmarket' in particular, with a big bowl of popcorn in the middle of the table, which we'd greedily consume.

Picnics on the windswept beaches, chicken and spring onion sandwiches, and the obligatory hard boiled egg!

We would drive into the New Forest to see the ponies, and I remember one year finding my first adder under a huge log. I also remember the joys of small brick like slabs of Neopolitan ice cream between two oblong shaped wafers and lots of lemonade. Happy days indeed.

We would have late evening walks, stopping off at the little shop round the corner on the way to have some ice cream - tutti frutti was my fave. The little shop has been demolished and replaced with houses :( No penny arcades or fun fairs (unless you went into Aberdeen which we did once and I was scared witless on the ghost train :))

According to Harry the Snappers fin and comprehesive lists of ARFO's yesterday I note there's nothing at all by the Rolling Stones... gasp!

So, with that (and the weather) in mind, what about GET OFF OF MY CLOUD for a starter?

  • Comment number 59.

#45. Only once or twice, but it was scary. Single car roller coaster, and you always worried about coming off the tracks, crashing, or the car(mouse) behind catching up and knocking you off.

Now, I have to get something off my chest, and this isn't the place to do it, so I'm off for a bit to update my own blog for the first time in ages. No-one will read it, no-one ever does, because everything is either ludicrous or dull, but the process is cathartic. Laters, p'taters.

#7 Mo - Love the idea of hearing that driving bass line on ADDICTED TO LOVE again. My very worst wet holiday memory was 1976 on the Isle of Skye. Non-stop rain for a week in a tent listening to Tony Blackburn complaining how hot the the studio was in London.

My other ARFO tune could be:

WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN - THE WHO.

It's been knocking around my head since yesterday afternoon with the NofW closure. 'Meet the new boss - same as the old boss'.

Off to Windermere in the Landy again tonight - in the rain!

Hey Malcolm - lovely to 'see' you. Gazza is our Happy Hornet - he's at his brother's (I think) wedding this weekend.

    MCW - sounds idyllic.

When I was about 3 my Dad took me with him when he went fishing one evening during our holiday. I soon got bored so decided to play in the car. It seemed like my Dad was gone an absolute age and then I decided I needed a wee. I tried to attract my Dad's attention but he was so engrossed in catching a fish for his tea he didn't notice me. Suffice to say I had to stand on the back seat of the car all the way home and wasn't allowed to go on any more of the evening fishing trips :(

#56 does this mean you are going to get away, MTF? Fingets crossed.

Keyboard didn't fit in the car until I removed all the packaging and put it in the passenger side. Daren't risk putting the roof down when I go home in case it flies out ;-)

Some lovely reminisces of holidays. I remember the excitement of that first glimpse of the sea - it always seemed to be over a hill. My brother and I would be sitting in the back of the car, noses pressed to the glass in excited anticipation. We'd drive over one hill - no, that wasn't it, then another - no, still no sign of the sea, then finally another hill, and there it would be sparkling in the sunlight! Or probably grey with white wave tops whisking across the surface but we all romanticise our memories.. There were the canvas wind breaks, wriggling to get changed into swimsuits under towels, the shock of the freezing water as we dived in, playing with Dad in the waves, and then shivering with the cold afterwards.

Sometimes we went self-catering, but we often used to stay in B & Bs. We would invent names for the other guests - not terribly original ones it has to be said, I remember Mr and Mrs Green Car and Mr and Mrs Two Boys.

    Hi Simon

Just to say thanks for all the three worders, it truly makes my day to hear them! Could I request ELO - Mr Blue Sky. As it's friday I will be with my friend Eva, and as usual, we'll have the wine open and be winding down after another busy week. It's my birthday on Monday so that would make it really special!

    Cheers Simon

Ooooh all these happy memories flooding back this afty. Deebee, the sea was always over a hill wasn't it. As we got closer to my Granda's house my sis and I would chant "I see the sea and the see sea's me" 'til we actually saw the sea and resounding cheers would go up. Happy days indeedio. My Dad and big sis used to walk along the harbour wall but my Mum wouldn't let me, in case I fell in. We were away for a month in the summer - my Dad would take us to Granda's on the Friday evening, drive home Sunday afternoon (amidst much weeping and waving of white hankies when he drove away) and when he returned two weeks later on the Friday evening - it was better than Christmas day. During the first fortnight my Mum used to do my Granda's spring cleaning so she could enjoy the second fortnight when my Dad was with us.

Being brought up in the West Country, many happy days were spent at Weston-super-Mare, where I loved riding along the length of the pier on The Golden Arrow or Silver Arrow 'train' and riding on the donkeys!

One of my favourite memories of childhood holidays, was buying a new bucket and spade from what are now quaint, old-fashioned shops where they were hung up outside! Also sitting in deckchairs, eating sandwiches that had a bit of a crunch to them, especially if it was a windy day!

I also remember Sunday school outings, on the bus, to Burrington Combe, where we learned that 'Rock of Ages' was written while the Rev Toplady (?) was sheltering one day... then it was on to Cheddar caves and finishing up at Weston-super-Mare for some fun time on the beach, rides on the donkeys, then at teatime, gathering together at a cafe for our tea and ice creams.

    Happy days..... :o))

#73 Toots... seeing your 'oops-a-daisy' reminded me of sitting on the grass making daisy chain necklaces, bracelets and circle thingys for our hair... then it was holding a buttercup under our friends' chins to see if it shone and if it did, they liked butter... ah the memories of an innocent and very happy childhood spent in a small village with about 30 children at the primary school... these days schools with so few children would probably be closed down through costing too much money to run!

    Great job news Madchickenwoman :)

Hope it stays dry for you for your brothers wedding happy hornet :) I know someone who is getting married tomorrow too, seems it's a popular day for weddings!

Loving all the summer holiday memories, prompted by Mr Mayo's family holiday reminiscences :)

We went on coach holidays as a child, never self-catering, we always stayed in a hotel, as pre-arranged for the coach party. We went with a local firm and whenever I saw their coaches out and about, the memories of happy holidays would come flooding back, they still do to this day actually, as the coach company is still in business. I recall sing-songs on the coach, and bags of pick and mix being passed down the aisles, plus stopping at the various service stations along the way, with the massive queues for the ladies toilets! In fact I recall my granddad and various other gentleman securing use of the 'gents' toilets for us girls and ladies on 'desperate' occasions!! The coach trip itself was as much a part of the holiday experience as the arrival at the eventual holiday destination. We usually holidayed in places like Torquay, Margate, Bournemouth and in later years Great Yarmouth. Happy days indeed!

Hope you're brother's wedding goes well HH. Have you written your speech? I think you'll be okay with the weather, the forecast looks reasonable for tomorrow. I like the sound of your group - only problem is, three of us are keyboard players. I guess we'll have to take it in turns...

LuciesMum, my Mum was a teacher and one of the schools she taught in only had about 30 children. Thinking about it, it must have made teaching quite hard work as they'd all be at different stages.

    Seaside holidays ..

As a child of the forces - I spent much of my youth close to golden mediterranean beaches.

But nothing compared to coming 'home to England' - Lancashire in particular, and trips to Southport with all the family on the Ribble Bus. All the cousins from Manchester used to join us there.

The old Pier train and the Pleasure Beach. I'll never forget the time my cousin Sandra persuaded me to go on the 'Bobs' - she was 15, I was 12. Absolutely bone-rattlingly terrifying!

Fish and Chops and Vimto - always Vimto.

    :^D
