Gentle Stretching

Simon Mayo|08:40 UK time, Thursday, 30 June 2011

Good morning to all, a sunny cool day here with packed lunches to sort. The perfect packed lunch for the under 12's seems to demand crisps, sandwich/bagel and something in the chocolate department. Once we move beyond early years, we get more sophisticated and add salads and the like, but I feel the kids have got it right. Prawn cocktail, cheese and pickle and a chocolate bar. Sorted.

The main terror is of course the parents' race which we have every intention of missing. It's the hayfever you see. Or the ankle, I can't remember. Maybe both. Over the years I have worked out that the best place to finish is 5th. It is apparently not cool to win, it is embarrassing to come last but 5th out of, say, 12, is just about ok. Inspiring thoughts.

Child 3 has just announced he expects me there at 10. Blimey. Better curtail this blog!

Nige does steak bavette with salady options for the principled or faint-hearted.

And songs today please for THE SEASIDE, THE PIER AND THE PROM PROM PROM. Brighton's Palace Pier is up for sale and there's enough sun to just about get away with it.

Have a day of noble striving and steely resolve. See you after 5, must dash. Ooh my leg...

    Morning all,

Bloggers, DT team and Lord Ammo (limbering up and applying Deep Heat as we speak to his well-formed calves in preparation for the 'Father's race')

A stupendous morning here, no races to run, or bikes to cycle - a Uni staff garden party after work means I am looking a wee bit 'posher' than normal for work and certainly less sweaty.

Plus my Mother-in-law has turned a corner, despite the best efforts of the local hospital to bump her off, she's pulling through. Phew.

My suggestion, though not of course an oldie, is

    SEASIDE by The Kooks

and would like to 2nd Chris Rea ON THE BEACH and SEVEN SEAS OF RYE by Queen

Not nearly enough pomp rock played (as opposed to Heavy Metal Matt-style) recently!

Good morning Lord Ammo, Team and fellow sun-kissed blogpoppets!

A sunny and fresh morning in London. My last day in my current contract so likely to be busy clearing things out and saying farewells. Have done a year here so it is time to move on. I would like to leave a parting gift and kill the Programme Manager but that might impact future prospects.

I spent many years in Brighton and can think of loads of songs that remind me of the place but none of them fit the theme!

Deebee, glad your GD got home safe and sound.

Suzie - good to hear that the MiL is improving.

Mo - pleased you are feeling better and here is hoping that your Dad does likewise.

Katy - hope all well with you.

  • Comment number 30.

#15 of course, please add an h to Rye...the song is not of course about a cereal crop, or a seaside town, but in fact according to Wik*pedia:

"Seven Seas of Rhye is a place where the Bohemians are taken after they are brainstormed by Khashoggi"

So there, now we all know...

Watching them play that on TOTP was a pivotal moment in the shaping of my musical tastes...

My Dad, of course, was less enamoured - he was just waiting for 'Tomorrow's World' to start, and only peeked over his paper when Pan's People were on, funny that!

  • Comment number 31.

    Morning all,

Just a quick dash through with a through songs ..

HE'S ON THE BEACH - KIRSTY MACCOLL

  • Comment number 37.

Would like to second Billie's suggestion of ECHO BEACH, Martha and the Muffins, good choice Billie :)

Suzie - glad to hear your MiL has turned a corner, I hope she makes a good recovery.

Mo - wishing your Dad well soonly. You'll be missing popping in to see him. Following a phone call from my sis to the SWD, my dear old Mum has been bumped up the list for assessment and is now considered high priority - it could still be weeks / months before she's assessed.

I'm off to see The Cherry Orchard, Zoe Wanamaker is starring, at the cinema this evening - it's another of the National Theatre Live offerings - really can't wait - have a feeling it'll be goooooood. Just hoping I can stay awake. Completed a 6.5 mile run Tuesday night, a little bit of training for the 3 peaks last night and then a 3 mile run this morning.

Ha!!! With a little nudge from Alex Heney I've come up with another suggestion:-

    DO THE STRAND, ROXY MUSIC

  • Comment number 42.

#29 - Alex~G - I hope you have a lovely day and manage to resist the urge to bump off the Programme Manager

#30 - Suzie - Ha!!! That sounds familiar - my Dad was a very keen Tomorrow's World fan.

Deebee, I think it's shocking that the GD's employers think it's okay to expect a young girl to work 'til that time and not arrange for her to get home safely. Having said that, I stayed up 'til the elder boy finished his shift last night and went to collect him just before midnight. It's quite a quiet little village we live in but I wouldn't have slept 'til he came in anyway so thought I'd get off to sleep quicker if I went to collect him.

#37 let's hope it's not too long before your Mum gets assessed. What a load of nonsense. Should have been done by now. You had me worried when I caught the word "bumped" there. #45 - Thanks Mo. Fingets crossed it won't be too much longer. Mum's just so lonely and hates being on her own now. She was always happy with her own company as she could find things to do and didn't mind watching a bit of tv too but she doesn't remember who's who on programmes and has lost interest in her old faves. Glad you enjoyed WWRY - I've never seen it but it's definitely on my list of shows to see.

I'm having a final blast at Choon Choosing before the puns burst out of my consciousness.

One of the very best days of my teens was when a family I babysat for took their two little ones and me to Brighton for the day - they'd just had a win on the pools and we were allowed to ride on, or go in, or eat, or buy - ANYTHING we wanted! I was very modest and chose one of those little shell boxes. I still have it.

    I forgot to suggest...

EVERY DAY IS LIKE SUNDAY - MORRISSEY

Morrissey has been quoted as saying that there is 'something strangely depressing about a seaside town out-of-season'. The lyrics are inspired by Nevil Shute's novel On the Beach, about a group of people waiting for nuclear devastation in a beachside town in Australia. Also, according to Morrissey, the song was originally inspired after visiting the Welsh sea-side resort of Borth.

Not the most cheerful of seaside songs though! :p

Welcome to AlexWatford, and welcome back to Malcolm_Powder! I remember you did the Festival of Speed last year as well, Malcolm. Was listening to CLP's show this morning, with all the people who'd successfully bid for a drive in one of those fantastic cars - I felt a bit inadequate in my poor little Saab 9-3 convertible...

#47 Thanks for the update on your brother, KatyMatey - you all continue to be in my prayers. XX

#71 #79 There IS only one Deebee. End of. It must be a mistake.

#83 Alex-G - how very restrained of you! Hope your last day goes well.

#90 LuciesMum - I really did Laugh Out Loud at your picture! Good thing my colleague has now left the room - I've been chuckling at the book I'm reading, and I think it would have been the last straw.

I mentioned earlier that I lived in Brighton for many a year and lots of songs reminded me of the place. Just thought of one of those that DOES fit the theme - too late now but:

THE FLESH FAILURES / LET THE SUNSHINE IN - cast of Hair

The first part refers to the nudist beach (I never went) and the second reminds me of dancing down the seafront with my best friend.

#92 Andy - thank you! I am never sure about the Kentish man/man of Kent boundary. Need to look it up!

As background music I could commend the Theme from 'Jaws' to the house.

Never mind: BANANARAMA - CRUEL SUMMER

THE STYLE COUNCIL - LONG HOT SUMMER 1989 remix

#97 I grew up in Kent, and the Kentish Man/Man of Kent thing is to do with which side of the Swale you live, if I remember rightly. Can never remember which way round it went though...
