Notes From A Small Train

Simon Mayo|08:18 UK time, Tuesday, 31 May 2011

Good morning bloggers all from the luxury of a National Express train. We trundle through the sunny Suffolk countryside as we all sit quietly attending to our business while one pompous fool across the aisle lectures his wife and, by default, the rest of the carriage on his job, the government and the world. I can reveal that all are going badly.

I hope your weekend/bank holiday was splendid. As normal when away from the usual routine and having a day off, too many chips were consumed while distracted by seaviews and amusement arcades. This will be rectified today as rigorous exercise will accompany all tunes we play faster than 70 beats per minute. Anything slower will be greeted with a somnolent posture.

*Pompous traveller update. His 'wife' appears to have taken all she can and bailed out at Woodbridge. Silence returns.

Today we welcome Bill Bryson to Drivetime. Like many I have enjoyed his writing since Notes From A Small Island many years ago. His smart observations about life here, together with an increasing love of our odd ways has made him an unmissable writer. His latest is a tour around his house. Not in a 'Through the Keyhole' way but a journey around the rooms of his Norfolk rectory as he writes about how ordinary things came to be. He calls it a "Short History of Private Life" and though, at 600+ pages, it's not at all short, it is always entertaining and invigorating.

And let's try SEPP BLATTER and FIFA oldies today. In one weekend we have had the beautiful game (Barcelona) and the ugly game (old guys in suits). Let's be 'avin' you as Delia would say.

*pompous man update #2. He has now developed a cough and cold so we all notice him. Everyone out at Ipswich.

Have a slim-line and chip-free Tuesday, see you after 5.

    Very frustrating over the weekend as I could lurk but not post as for some reason, the blog would not accept posts from my phone. Seems as if everyone had a good weekend - was lovely reading the insights into your lives.

    Kev, well done on Popmaster! I was listening and said to Mr P "it's a blogpoppet!". I thought you did very well.

    Cucumber songs??? Don't give him any ideas, MCW. I've struggled with the footie suggestions. I just don't seem to be able to think laterally. Brain clogged up with all sorts of unhelpful stuff.

    Kev - how frustrating you didn't get the other questions. I thought you did well anyway. Had a chuckle to myself when I realised it was 'our Kev' on the quiz :)

    Hope the blog stops hopping about before long - it's really quite distracting.

    Hope you all have a lovely day.

  • Comment number 52.

    #50 ... oops, here's Mr Brown's missing 's'!

  • Comment number 53.

    Morning everyone

    Couldn't think of any.. hiccup.. ostrich songs or.. hiccup.. any that relect my vision of Blatter with head stuck somewhere very dark and constrained.

    So I shall nominate the following as an appropriate image when he finally goes, as he surely must 'cos this has all happened on his watch whether or not he has personally been involved:

    The Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles

    Never understood all the "game in good hands" messages that radio and TV stations get after he has been interviewed in the past. He always has been a fool trying to tinker with things that are not his business (Ronaldo "slave" comments) while doing absolutely nothing about those absolutely are in his sphere of influence (the ludicrous amount of bear hugging that Jamie Carragher* gets away with week in week out).

    * He's just my preferred example :-)

  • Comment number 54.

    VOTE FOR ME by MARK WYNTER (ex-R2 presenter?) from the movie, JUST FOR FUN, which doesn't get a screening, these days. Like IT'S TRAD DAD and GONKS GO BEAT.

    I don't why channels like BBC4, Film4 or Yesterday couldn't fit them into their schedules.

    DO THE FOOTBALL by ISIS (this probably refers to what Americans regard as football)

    O TANNENBAUM by NAT KING COLE (among others). The lyrics go "0 Tannenbaum, wie treu sind deine Blatter" Whatever that means.

  • Comment number 55.

    Hello Again :)

    Been for a nap after having only a couple of hours sleep, but I feel worse! The bouncy blog is making me feel dizzy!!

    Love reading Simon's blog as usual :) Why do other people think we want to hear a lecture when we are travelling? There's usually always one loud mouth in a train carriage.

    I'm not sure about oldie suggestions :/ I haven't really been following all this business with FIFA. Football is one of those things I just don't care about in life, from who footballers are doing the dirty with to what how much money is being pocketed by whom. I just don't care.

    But as there don't seem to be that many suggestions, how about...

    The Man Who Sold The World (cup) - David Bowie

    Scandal - Queen

  • Comment number 56.

    Thanks for all the good lucks.

    I've just been to a famous stationers and got my 'back to school' stuff!

    Having now had the chance to re-read Simon's blog, I realise that he's probably travelling FROM Suffolk. I'd assumed he was going TO Suffolk, because of it being half term. Or maybe he is - maybe he's commuting for the week. I don't know...

    Whoop whoop for the Dundee mini blog meet!! Make sure you take some photos, girls.

    On a more serious note, this is why my train was stopped on Friday night (thanks to Mo and Mr B for some sterling detective work!) https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/8545602/Red-Cross-murder-victim-told-police-she-was-being-harassed.html

    Don't think I want to go to London again for a while. Not on a train, anyway :(

    #55 and Simon, I shall bear this in mind when travelling on the train on Sat for a mini blog meet up with the delightful Toots!

    #39 LOL Deebee!

    #57 What a sad story Deebee. Just tragic.

    Lord Ammo is indeed travelling towards London as his train stopped at Woodbridge then Ipswich which is south of Woodbridge.

    #56 & 63 Love buying stationery! If it is a choice between a pot of multi-coloured paper clips or a pair of shoes, I go for the paper clips.

    #61 Hiya Crumpy!

  • Comment number 66.

    Arg wrong button pushed so have to write it all again.

    Afternoon all, esp Lord Ammo with his Suffolk sand still between the toes (or shingle, depending on where you took your Paul Smith socks off) - a sunset in that area is a real SUNSET - but we saw scant evidence of any sun this weekend in the Oxon area...

    Not knowing any Footie songs, I want to suggest one for SEPP BLATTER who has made himself a demi-god it would appear:

    'HEY, YOU, GET OFFA MY CLOUD' by The Stones, of course

    Would like to 2nd #12 & #42 Tears for Fears - gotta be an ARFO surely, sometime soon?

    And thanks #39 for the Ken Dodd joke, nice one.

    Now regretting offering my old man cucumber last night. whilst he was making his sarnies for today in case he thinks there was some 'skullduggery' afoot.

    Sorry I didn't realise the pop master contestant was you, # 23 Kev - I heard it (I was hiding in the bedroom from 'Clone Wars' 'apparently' a suitable BH Monday DVD choice)

    I must've missed the people intro on popmaster. That Zoe Ball has me in stitches, she is a great stand-in for the Bruce Meister, even if she does sometimes 'break' the studio.

    Back to the laptopgrindstone.

    Have a nice day y'all esp those at home with young, bored children, I feel your pain.

  • Comment number 68.

    Ah - there you all are!

    Hello to the neighbours as well - Bids, Crumpy et al

    A combination of being somewhat over-peopled and broadband downage kept me blog-free over the long weekend. This morning I wasn't allowed in - but can now see that a post I made earlier got through ...

    Train rides to and from the Suffolk coast - sweet nostalgia!

    My favourite childhood book - Robert Louis Stevenson's 'A Child's Garden Of Verses' contains the poem 'From A Railway Carriage' which I learned by heart .. and recited whenever I travelled on the train from London to my auntie in Lowestoft.

    "Faster than fairies, faster than witches,

    Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;

    And charging alone like troops in a battle,

    All through the meadows the horses and cattle:

    All of the sights of the hill and the plain

    Fly as thick as driving rain;

    And ever again, in the wink of an eye,

    Painted stations whistle by.

    Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,

    All by himself and gathering brambles;

    Here is a tramp who stands and gazes;

    And there is the green for stringing the daisies!

    Here is a cart run away in the road

    Lumping along with man and load;

    And here is a mill and there is a river;

    Each a glimpse and gone for ever ... "

    *sigh*

  • Comment number 69.

    #65 Elementary, my dear Alex - you'd make an excellent detective!

    #66 Suzie, Suffolk sunsets are indeed spectacular. One of our favourite places to go on the boat is a place called Walton Backwaters (okay technically it's in Essex, but only just). We've spent many a happy evening sipping G & Ts on the deck, watching the sun go down.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 70.

    Hi Katy!

    I too loved "A Child's Garden of Verses" and still have my tatty copy. My favourite was:

    "A birdie with a yellow bill

    Hopped upon my window sill,

    Cocked his beady eye and said,

    'Get out of bed you sleepy head' "

  • Comment number 79.

    #76 other ways of making money have occured to me:

    Grate cheese for lazy people and sell it at twice the price as ungrated!

    Sell bags of washed lettuce that weigh maybe an ounce in old money for the same price as steak per pound...

    Slice ham so thinly that it looks like soggy pink vellum and sell that also, at the price of steak per pound - of which 99% is water and salt...

    Don't even get me started on containers of (one layer of) raspberries at £26 a KG...#moneyforoldrope as they may say on Twitter..

    Caveat Emptor ('Buyer beware'), until you get to the till...then the scales fall from your eyes, as your jaw hits the deck.

    The news story that let us know food will increase in cost SO much in the next few years lead me to get out the preserving pan & 'Foraging weekly' mags.

  • Comment number 80.

    #79 Tell me about it Suzie! I object to fresh fruit and veg being packaged - I've never quite had the courage to take the packaging off before taking it to the till, but I've been very tempted.

    Simon and Mark Kermode have just been on Richard Bacon's show on 5 Live (I had a sneaky peek at the live stream while the boss wasn't looking!). Worth a 'listen at a more convenient time', I'm sure.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 81.

    #79 It's crazy isn't it? Are the supermarkets encouraging laziness or are lazy people encouraging the supermarkets?

    For my part, we go to the greengrocer on a Saturday and buy loose fruit and veg we need (not the amount a supermarket thinks we need), we then go to the butcher and buy the meat we need (not the amount the supermarkets tells us we need) and then into the cheese shop for freshly baked bread and the amount of cheese we will need for the week. It may cost a little more but we are making savings in the long run as we are not throwing anything away.

    Suzie, get yourself a stock pot to live next to the preserving pan. I always have a couple of litres of stock in the freezer now so a really nice soup can be rustled up quickly!

  • Comment number 82.

    #81 Not only that, but the meat you buy from a butcher is generally nicer than supermarket meat. And the staff are friendlier - at least they are at my local butcher. And fruit and veg from a greengrocers will usually be locally grown, so you are supporting local businesses. It's a win/win.

    Er - good think Soapgirly isn't around. She works for a supermarket...

    Evening all

    Have just returned from the office with internet access but no time (as opposed to the office with no internet access) and caught up with your news ..

    I too had the Children's Garden of Verse as a child .. I'd totally forgotten until I saw it on here .. by the way I have a firs edition Paddington Bear book signed to me by Michael Bond too :-)

    I'm going to attempt a quick(ish) round up...

    #39 LOL Ken Dodd is coming to Sheffield on the 17th June, not sure I would want to spend a whole evening with him, but I salute him still going strong at his age.

    #57 How awful :( I had heard about that, and wondered if that was your 'obstruction'. I feel for the poor train drivers, it must be awful seeing things like that.

    #68 Lovely poem :) I did have a children's book of poetry when I was little, not sure it was that one, but pretty sure that poem was in it.

    On food buying/saving I just saw this article https://uk.lifestyle.yahoo.com/food-drink/10-things-you-should-never-buy-again-blog-11-lovefood.html With food prices due to sky rocket (and being pretty high right now) we will all need to be careful shoppers in the future.

    Congratulations on all the menshes so far :) I haven't actually heard any because of twin dramas!

    Hi Everyone -

    Enjoyed my mensh - Blogger Bill indeed! Welldones to the muggles for "Go Now"

    Welldone John - That's a lovely song. You could have suggested GT&T today. I was going to mention it this morning but the blog was a real pain. Only managed to post eight. Wasn't REVOLUTION yours as well? No mensh.

    Enjoyed reading back - Thanks to All. Lots of people away?

    #68 Katy - Don't know that book, but do know that poem.

    From lastnight/thismorning -

    Harry - no probs. & Zoe thanks for the explanation.

    #298 MTF - That sounds lovely. We LOVE Prunes - with Grapefruit & Yoghurt for Brekky, in a sweet batter pudding which has been mentioned on here (has a posh name which I forget!) and we do a Pork & Prune & Red Wine dish. All Yummy!

    #90 today Alison - How are you settling into your new job-life?

    And Chickster - Good luck and Best Wishes for tomorrow.

    Hope I've not missed anyone.

    Don't seem to be manymenshes tonight. Did I miss JBG getting one? R2 on radio, tennis on mute on tv and ironing all going on at the same time.
